or Pioneer Valley writer, producer and director Robert D. Krzykowski, movies watched at home are a “perfect escape” during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing. “A great movie can transport you. It’s a shared dream, after all,” he said. “Since we’re obligated to protect one another by respecting these methods of containment, movies are a perfect escape. It’s a moment to discover some new stories that illuminate something meaningful about our world or ourselves. Or it can be much simpler than that. Movies make us happy.”
The writer and director of “The Man who Killed Hitler and then Bigfoot,” filmed in part in Turners Falls, grew up in Montague. He has a new project in development but doesn’t have a lot to say about it. “With all that’s happening in the world, it’s a precious

world. “We’re all doing a bit of that now, and movies have the power to connect us to an experience or an idea that can be profound when we let it in,” he said. He offered three suggestions in each of three categories: Family movies “Spirited Away” (2001) Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpiece is a feast for the senses about bravery, greed, growing up and moving on. It’s ability to speak to the heart through the eyes of a child is singularly powerful — and just cryptic enough — to feel like a dream come brightly to life.
“The Secret of Roan Inish” (1994) John Sayles’ Irish fantasy film is told with such honesty and authenticity that the magic seems close to us, and real, and entirely human. You can almost smell the salty air in this beautiful, down-to-earth

selkie myth. “Captains Courageous” (1937) Rudyard Kipling’s coming-of-age adventure stands the test of time in one of the finest family films ever made. Thrills, laughs and genuine pathos carry the story of a spoiled brat who falls overboard on a luxury steamship
and is rescued by a Portuguese-American fisherman (Spencer Tracy) who adopts him as part of the rough-andtumble crew. Feature films “Being There” (1979) Raised in isolation, the simple gardener of a Washington, D.C., townhouse is released SEE MOVIES, PAGE E3

into the world when the wealthy owner dies. Earnest, plain-speaking and increasingly mythic, Peter Sellers stars in Hal Ashby’s comedic fantasy where simple words are sage wisdom in the halls of power. “Raising Arizona” (1987) An ex-con and a police officer marry with the hopes of having a baby. When they’re unable to conceive, they kidnap one of the quintuplets from a wealthy couple (“they had more than they could handle”). One of the funniest movies ever, it’s also one of the sweetest, most human love stories hiding in an unlikely place.
“Superman” (1978) There’s no better time to revisit the magic (and John Williams music) of this film. For the last decade, superhero movies have focused on the great burden of heroism and the toll of responsibility. Richard Donner’s “Superman” refused any cynicism, reveled in the spirit of its hero, and as the poster said: “You’ll believe a man can fly.” This is still the finest superhero movie ever made, and as hopeful and human as ever. “Waiting For Guffman” (1996) Want to smile for 90 minutes straight? Perhaps the greatest (and funniest) alltime “mockumentary,” this is Christopher Guest’s hilarious ode to small-town community theater and all the gossip and drama that make a production soar — on and off stage. Never mean-spirited, it’s an improvised free-for-all that rewards multiple viewings from a brilliant cast of comedy greats. “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters”(2007) How can a movie about two rival Donkey Kong high score champions be a revealing look at who we are, what drives us, and what makes us human? You’ll just have to see. A documentary so strange, so tense and so good — you have to see it to believe it. “If any of the movies above put a smile on someone’s face — that’s a beautiful thing,” Krzykowski said.

‘Ori and the Will of the Wisps’ is enjoyable sequel By Christopher Byrd
Special To The Washington Post
“Ori and the Will of the Wisps” is the sequel to one of the more vibrant platformers of the last decade. Like its predecessor, “Ori and the Blind Forest” (2015), it marries inviting, cartoony visuals, with robust platforming challenges that make the most of the game’s responsive controls. Think of it as a twenty-first century iteration of the 1990s mascot-driven sidescroller — equally tough and cutesy. The new game hasn’t cast the same revelatory spell on me as the first Ori but I’ve enjoyed crisscrossing its large map in
tried-and-true Metroidvania-style. “The Will of the Wisps” opens with Ori, a floppy-eared forest spirit, and its closest companions, Naru and Gumo, doting on an owlette named Ku, the youngest member of their cohort. Because of a malformed wing Ku is unable to fly more than a short distance, which leaves her feeling dejected and her friends at a loss as to how to help. That is, until Ori remembers that among its possessions is a wing from Ku’s mother, Kuro, Ori’s deceased, one-time adversary from the first game. After the bigheaded, thin-limbed Gumo ties the wing onto Ku, the owlette takes to the

skies with Ori on her back and falls into the company of a flock of birds. As the two travel further from their homeland they spot in the distance a dark, foreboding, wooded landscape. A vicious storm then kicks up with gale-force winds that fling the pair apart.
Players spend the first part of the game searching for Ku. Ori must travel back and forth through a shadowy, overgrown forest full of thorny vines and eager foes (among them are flies with long, stinging proboscises) – fighting, cavorting, and solving puzzles with the usual means: throwing switches, finding door keys and the like. Early in the game, ability upgrades are dished out at a fast pace so one doesn’t feel hamstrung for long. Ori has a wider variety of skills at its disposal than in “The Blind Forest.” I’ve yet to discover any that make “The Will of the Wisps”

We were, I should hasten to add, too caught up in a cracking, plot-propelling confrontation — and the gorgeous language in which it was expressed — to be consciously thinking about how it might mirror any tensions between a real-life mother and son in the 1960s. Those are just my rules. If you’re so inclined, please pick your own six pack and send a list to me at geolenker@ yahoo.com. You can use any rules you choose. I’d love to hear from you and if I get enough interesting responses, I might do a second column using your choices. Without further ado, here is my list of six, in no particular order:
1.
Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project Meadowlark IPA The IPA category was going to be the toughest for me since I love so many of them. But when I think back to this beer — it’s no longer made — I just remember how much I loved it. Of course I’ve been enthralled with many IPAs over the years — too many to name here — but Meadowlark sticks out in my memory. Hoppy but balanced.
2. Rochefort 10
I need a complex beer in the mix and this Belgian quad hits the mark. The beer is an amazing ballet of flavors, evoking luxury and decadence. As good of a Belgian beer as I’ve ever had, and yes, I’ve had Westvleteren 12.

OPING WITH THE challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated shutdown and “stay home” orders that have resulted has triggered an array of responses from the local restaurant community. Some operators have chosen to suspend operations altogether. Others are trying to sustain some level of activity through takeout, employing either delivery or pick-up service of food to go. All of them recognize that they and their businesses are in the fight of their lives. The shutdown option some operators have gone with has its own difficult issues associated with it. First of all, the cash flow stops the minute the doors are locked for the duration, but restaurateurs continue to face ongoing expenses — rent, utilities, insurance, and more. Finding the money to pay those bills is not easy, given that many restaurants are not well capitalized and have always been doing business in a low-margin environment. There’s also the question of what to do with inventory, most of which is, to varying degrees, perishable. Some restaurants have offered the food they had on hand, especially that which was partially or fully prepared, to employees for “take home” on their last day of work. Other operations have donated inventory to food banks or homeless shelters, and a few have even, when possible, sold off food and supplies to the general public. A second concern when shutting down a restaurant is the loss of key employees. Given that only a few weeks ago food service establishments were struggling to recruit and keep good people in what was then a low-unemployment economy, owners and managers are under-

OST READERS are probably familiar with the “desert island” concept, where you pick a certain limited amount of things in a chosen category to bring with you to a desert island, where you presumably would spend the rest of your days with no access to anything else in that category. This game is often played with albums, as in “top 10 desert island discs” you’d choose if you could bring only them with you to this imaginary island. Well, since we are all somewhat on our own temporary desert islands as we shelter in place and avoid going out, I thought it might be a fun exercise to list a six-pack of beers I’d bring to a desert island if I had to choose just six forever. (Of course, we assume that we have a never-ending supply of each of these beers.) A few rules and notes: • I decided not to choose any local beers because I don’t want to be seen as playing favorites. There are too many great beers around here, and choosing only six might ruffle some feathers and raise some eyebrows. And I don’t want to do that. So I’m only choosing nationally or internationally known beers. • I’m limiting myself to one beer from any particular style. Otherwise I might choose mostly — if not all — IPAs. I’m cheating a little bit with this, as I did choose an IPA and a double IPA. But hey, it’s my game today. • I’m allowing myself to pick beers that were one-off and never made again. • Finally, I’m not claiming these beers are the best six beers ever made. Not at all. It’s just an experiment and picking six somewhat diverse beers to bring with me to enjoy on a desert island for the rest of my life if I had to.

6 kosher wines from Israel under $25 perfect for Passover
P
ASSOVER MAY FEEL different in many households this year. This annual Jewish holiday commemorating their liberation from slavery centuries ago begins at sundown on April 8. The holiday then lasts until April 16. As part of Passover, the first night features a large feast known as the Seder. Traditionally, families gather together to eat and drink as part of this ritualistic, 15-step dinner. Each step in the Seder is clearly defined. And several steps include drinking a cup of wine. Hopefully, many families will still be able to celebrate Passover together this year, in person or virtually. The idea of a virtual Passover Seder might have seemed strange a few weeks ago. But nothing seems normal right now. And yet, that’s exactly why holidays like Passover are so important. The Seder features precise steps and familiar texts. And like many holiday meals, the Seder often features comfort foods and, hopefully, several wonderful wines. At the Seder, participants are supposed to drink four cups of wine at precise moments during the meal. And for many Jewish people, the

What is kosher wine? Kosher wines are different than organic wines or other, similar agricultural designations. That’s because kosher wines must adhere to Jewish dietary laws in order to labeled kosher. Specifically, in order for a wine to be considered kosher, it needs to made by people who observe the Sabbath. There are lots of other rules governing kosher wine as well, including making sure that all the ingredients are kosher. Fortunately, kosher-certified wines say so on the bottle. And many wine stores often have a kosher wine section so customers can easily find such wines in their stores.
wine they drink at the Seder must be kosher. But you don’t need to be Jewish to enjoy kosher wine. And fortunately, you can find many affordable, delicious kosher wines, especially during this time of year. So in honor of Passover, I decided this week to recommend several kosher wines under $25, including a few un-

classics, how could I not choose a beer that brings back so many fond memories for me. Sure, I’ve had other Irish stouts that are also fantastic but this is for forever and I’ve already been drinking Guinness forever, so I trust it. Sláinte.

This one comes with a secondary condition: It has to be on cask. While this legendary British brew is fine in general, the cask version is sublime. I could be fine with just this beer alone.

Stone 10th Anniversary IPA For my final choice, I am employing both my “cheating” allowance (this is double IPA) and my one-off rule (it was only made for Stone’s 10th anniversary in 2006, although I have heard that it was reissued at times, albeit not exactly the same beer). Memory can play tricks on you, but I recall this as one of the greatest beers I’ve ever had. So I’m bringing it to my island. What are your six never-ending desert island beers?

2017 Barkan Vineyards Classic Chardonnay Dan Israel (Also recommended by Ken Ross) Quinlan’s second recommendation for kosher Passover wines included wines made by Barkan Vineyards in Israel. “It’s such a particularly warm environment to be growing grapes and yet their wines are really well mannered, really well balanced,” Quinlan said last week. I couldn’t agree more. If you’re looking for another kosher wine from Barkan Vineyards for Passover, I highly recommend their Classic Pinot Noir. This wine has soft, subtle, fruit-forward flavors that really hit their stride an hour or two after you open the wine. This complex wine may even need a day to reach its full potential. The second day I tasted this wine, its flavors really smoothed out and the fruit flavors were less intense and more subtle and cherry like. Let me add that this wine goes great with slightly sweeter or spicier foods. Cheers! feel radically different, but to be fair there are things that I’ve yet to discover in this game, which is much bigger than the original. Alongside swappable skills – for example, the always useful triple jump or the ability to stick to walls – Ori can gain a number of permanent upgrades by visiting forest shrines, like a dash ability that allows for short, horizontal sprints or a grapple that hooks to certain surfaces. (A neat, swappable skill can be found that permits Ori to grapple onto enemies.) Of these abilities, I still think Ori’s bash mechanic is an inspired design choice. ing projectile and use it like a springboard to propel itself off the projectile or redirect the projectile to break barriers, gives the Ori games a unique feel – a need for purposeful recklessness. Ori’s suite of abilities coupled with the tightness of the controls makes “The Will of the Wisps” especially tactile to play – it stuffs your hands with things to do. Though I’ve been impressed by the breadth of its level design, the game’s visuals have left me feeling ambivalent. I loved the art style of “The Blind Forest,” which drew inspiration from the animated films of Hayao Miyazaki; however, “The Will of Wisps” has struck me as sometimes beautiful and sometimes overblown like a fantasy calendar from the analog days.
1974 is highly recommended, and “Some Girls: Live in Texas ’78” is underappreciated. I’m giving the nod to “Gimme Shelter,” the 1970 doc from Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin that follows the 1969 tour that ended at the Altamont Speedway, with four deaths. Besides chronicling the tragic events that symbolically mark the end of the 1960s, there’s plenty of primo concert footage, including a blistering “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” from Madison Square Garden earlier in the tour.

To its credit, the artwork consistently works to create the impression of stupendous depth – foregrounds, middle grounds and backgrounds are all lavished with attention. Yet, while traveling across the sun-dappled region of Inwater Marsh, for example, the profu-
sion of colors on display more often stuck me as so florid as to be distracting. By contrast, the subterranean murk of the Mouldwood Depths where transluscently-winged shapes lay in the distance, is, indeed, stunning to behold. While the artwork has been hit or miss,

I’ve found the story to be altogether negligible thus far. Given that “The Will of the Wisps” is such a challenging game, one might hope that the writing wasn’t exclusively geared to tots (“The Wellspring was once the home to a great library, Ori. Knowledge flowed like water through its walls.”), but I’ve yet to come across a good quip or a nice turn of phrase over the twenty or so hours I’ve spent helping Ori cleanse the forest of “Decay.” “Ori and the Will of the Wisps” is a traditional video game sequel. Expect more abilities, a larger map, and more colors than in the first. I hoped to see a touch of subversion to its formula instead of straitlaced augmentation, but it’s easy to make peace with such complaints.
Michele Gondry was modeled after “Wattstax,” the 1974 film shot in Los Angeles featuring Isaac Hayes and the Staple Singers. (Watch that, too: It’s free on YouTube.) In 2008, the Canadian song-poet’s elegant, career-summarizing performance was filmed at the O2 arena in London. ‘Beyonce: Homecoming’ Beyonce was supposed to become the first black female headliner at the Coachella festival in the California desert in 2017, but a pregnancy — with twins! — put a stop to that. She returned the next year, and rather than reprise her “Lemonade” stage show, she cooked up an entirely new extravaganza in two weekend performances that are woven together in this Netflix movie, employing a marching band and scores of dancers in a show staged as a tribute to historically black colleges and universities. Coachella is not happening this spring, but Beychella lives on.
