enny A. Powers does not want the COVID-19 Grinch to steal Christmas. The family engagement coordinator for the Springfield Museums is hoping two upcoming holiday programs “can bring joy to lots of families during these trying times.”
The Beep and Greet and The Grinchmas Game for the Tall and the Small are two family-friendly activities aimed at providing holiday cheer while maintaining COVID safety protocols. During The Beep and Greet — which is free — visitors will experience the joy of waving at the Grinch and seeing Santa Claus. “We don’t want anyone to have to give up the holiday spirit just because of COVID-19, and we also want another chance to put books into kids’ hands,” Powers said. Visitors will be able to access the Beep and Greet on Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot at 21 Edwards St., only through the Eliot Street side of Edwards Street, with each car of visitors getting “quick but personal attention” from both the Grinch and Santa, she said, adding that a book will be given one to a car, and each child under 12 will receive a Grinch art activity to do at home. The Grinchmas Game for the Tall and the Small will offer visitors a safe and fun activity for the holiday season. It will take them through all five museums to

Westfield on Weekends’ DecemberFest, an annual holiday celebration, has been reimagined to capture the spirit of the season in safe and responsible ways during the COVID-19 pandemic. DecemberFest 2020 will feature a drive-by Holiday Light Challenge, now through Jan. 2; and Magic on the Air, a series of holiday programming to be telecast on Westfield’s community television and radio stations throughout December. “The very positive response to reimagined PumpkinFest activities proved the importance of continuing the DecemberFest annual tradition,” said Robert A. Plasse, co-president of Westfield on Weekends and coordinator of Magic on the Air. “While it is smaller and different this year, DecemberFest offers families the chance to be a part of a communal celebration that fulfills WOW’s mission: fostering creative vitality and

Todd Rundgren announces virtual tour of 25 cities
W
HILE THE LIVE event industry attempts to figure out what a post-pandemic concert might look like, Todd Rundgren is forging ahead with a virtual tour that will incorporate a city-specific presentation. Without ever leaving the confines of a Chicago-based studio, Rundgren will “visit” 25 cities on his “Clearly Human” tour. The tour starts in Buffalo on Feb. 14 and runs through March 22 with a show aimed at Seattle. Fans can “attend” shows by purchasing a single ticket through livestreaming company No Cap (nocapshows. com). Single tickets will be limited to those purchasing from within the metro’s specific zip code. If your city isn’t on the itinerary (there are no New England dates on the schedule) you can get around the zip code restriction by purchasing a multi-show ticket bundle. The tour will feature multiple camera angles for an “immersive” experience, and fans may appear on video screens. Rundgren plans to personalize the performance to each city through local images on a video wall and city-specific catering for the band and crew. The tour is to promote the upcoming reissue of Rundgren’s 1989 LP, “Nearly Human,” which will be played in its entirety along with other Rundgren favorites.

‘Let Them All Talk’ a pleasant diversion Meryl Streep stars in Steven Soderbergh’s latest film

teven Soderbergh’s latest film, “Let Them All Talk,” is filled with several not-insignificant pleasures, starting with Meryl Streep as a slightly superior and self-absorbed, Pulitzer-winning author named Alice. On her way from the United States to England aboard the Queen Mary 2 – whose nautical elegance Soderbergh films lovingly, almost like a silent character – Alice is set to receive another award, as she spends the two-week trip working (theoretically) on a new book.

It’s always uncanny when the movies anticipate their moments: Who would have thought that when the timeloop movies “Tenet” and “Palm Springs” came out in 2020, we would be living in a pandemic-induced wormhole of our very own? Similarly, Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round” arrives when many of us are enjoying more than the doctor-recommended 1.5 glasses of wine every day. Mads Mikkelsen stars as a high school teacher with a case of the blahs, midlife ennui shared by his three best friends. When one of them learns of a theory that a steady state of mild inebriation makes one more productive, relaxed and fulfilled, they proceed to test the hypothesis with gusto (with lots of references to Winston Churchill along the way). The predictable excesses and self-destruction ensue, but Vinterberg, who directed Mikkelsen in “The Hunt” a few years ago, knows how to see past the fireworks of pathology and burrow into the meaning of behavior. We can stipulate that there’s nothing special about watching a bunch of guys getting drunk, but Vinterberg, Mikkelsen

‘Possessor, ‘She Dies Tomorrow’ creepy, but creative By Tribune News Service
Two creepy but creative films top the new releases for this week. “Possessor Uncut”: Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips described this second film from writer-director Brandon Cronenberg as “crazy-gory.” Here, Cronenberg follows in the footsteps of his famous filmmaker father, David.
In “Possessor,” the consciousness of a contract killer is implanted into the body of another person in order to carry out a murder. It’s not for the faint of heart, but Phillips writes: “The best of Cronenberg’s nightmare is pure, imaginative immersion.” “She Dies Tomorrow”: This is a plague story with real relevance, about a virus
of sorts that’s passed from person to person. It’s not a pathogen, but an idea: knowing that you will die tomorrow. Tribune News Service film critic Katie Walsh found it infectious. In her review, Walsh wrote: “Using simple but effective lighting, sound and editing techniques, coupled with performance, director Amy Seimetz creates
a terrifyingly unsettling experience of transmission. Editing and sound are superbly intertwined into an unsteady rhythm, as editor Kate Brokaw’s cutting lulls and lingers before it smashes. With a sparse script, this mastery of film craft and form fills in the rest, creating a sensory cinematic experience of what the characters undergo emotionally.”
New on DVD “Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone”: A new edit of “The Godfather III” on the 30th anniversary of its release “Hawaii Five-0 (2010): The Complete Series”: All 10 seasons of the CBS drama starring Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan. SEE DVD, PAGE E7

few surprising things happen, early on, in “I’m Your Woman,” a 1970s-set neo-noir crime thriller from director Julia Hart. (As in her excellent and equally eccentric 2018 film “Fast Color,” about ordinary people with superpowers, Hart co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, Jordan Horowitz.)

after the first five minutes. Alternatively, it could easily have been a story about the relationship that develops between Cal and Jean. Admittedly, there’s a bit of that latter energy here, and the relationship dynamic of these two characters is subtly limned by Hart and Horowitz’s sensitive screenplay, as well as by Brosnahan and Kene’s underplayed performances. But soon enough, after Cal has set Jean up in a remote cabin – where Cal’s wife, son and grandfather (Marsha Stephanie Blake, De’Mauri Parks and Frankie Faison) soon join her – Cal also disappears. This ignites the main action of “I’m Your Woman,” whose
very title – suggesting the efforts of a loyal wife, or wives, to save their husbands – slyly subverts genre expectations. The question of whose woman Jean is, or will become, hangs in the air, and the answer isn’t what you might expect. For much of the film’s first half, the baby cries inconsolably, which is one way – and not a pleasant one – of ginning up tension. But the narrative eventually gains a grittier, and far more interesting, kind of traction, as Jean and Cal’s wife, Teri, grab the focus of the story, and hold it. In the process, the film becomes a parable of motherhood and female friendship, in the guise of a shoot-’em-up. “I’m Your Woman” isn’t so much off-kilter as it is ballasted by a different, perhaps lower center of gravity. The title sounds exploitative – perhaps even silly – but the tale it spins is one of power and, ultimately, of coming unexpectedly, satisfyingly, into one’s own.

HOUGH CONstraints of social distancing and capacity limits may have made it difficult for them to do so, restaurants in Western Massachusetts (and around the world) are still striving to provide us all with a fair measure of “holly-jolly” this Christmas season. Every Friday and Saturday evening through Dec. 18, the restaurant is hosting “Holiday Music by the Fire” from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Debi Spyre, vocalist and guitarist, performs Christmastime favorites. Champagnes, sparkling wines perfect for the holidays George Lenker Beer Nut
Good news brewing
A
FTER TWO WEEKS of me waxing wistful about Thanksgiving and my 17th anniversary of writing this weekly column, let’s get back to some beer news – and I have a handful of good items. First up is an amazing story that dovetails perfectly with the spirit of the holiday season, where it is hoped we show a little more love and kindness: A customer at a Cleveland restaurant recently left a $3,000 tip on a beer tab of $7.02. The anonymous tipper did so to help the staff during the pandemic. According to the owner of the eatery, Nighttown, Brendan Ring, the man told him that he wished him well and told him to share the tip with the four employees who were working. Ring wrote on his Facebook: “I ran after him and he said ‘no mistake we will see you when you reopen!’” The restaurant is voluntarily closing for a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a similar vein, a Toronto bar owner may have seen her venue stay afloat because her beer customers came to rescue by buying almost her entire beer stock and allowing her to survive closing due to COVID-19 restrictions. Owner Abra Shiner asked her community for help via

HE POP OF THE cork. The bubbles dancing in the glass. The crisp, clean refreshing taste. Aaaaah. All of this can only mean one thing. Someone somewhere just opened a beautiful bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine. And who couldn’t use a great bottle of sparkling wine right now? So this week, as I have other years around this time, I thought I would offer a few suggestions for Champagnes and other sparkling wines perfect for the holidays and to ring in the new year. Let me add that I have personally tasted each one of these sparkling wines at some point during 2020. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. Hope you enjoy. Recommended sparkling wines • Domaine Bousquet Brut Sparkling Rose ($13 Suggested Retail Price) • Gruet Brut Rose ($14.99 at Table & Vine in West Springfield) • Le Grand Courtage Brut ($17.99 at Table & Vine) • Mionetto Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG ($19 SRP) • Bottega Gold Prosecco DOC NV ($32.99 SRP) • 2013 Ferrari Perle 2013 (SRP $41.99) Recommended Champagnes • Nicolas Feuillatte Brut NV ($29.98 at Table & Vine) • Lanson Black Brut NV ($44.99 at Table & Vine) • Laurent Perrier Non Vintage Brut ‘La Cuvee’ Champagne ($44.99 at Table & Vine)

References to wine with bubbles date back to ancient Greek and Roman times, when people reportedly believed the
bubbles were due to different, other-wordly factors, including the phases of the moon and good or evil spirits. Modern sparkling wine dates back roughly to the 1660s, when a monk named Dom Perignon began developing different types of high-quality wines. Champagne, Belgian beer, amazing cheeses. Boy, those monks sure knew how to live! Where do the bubbles come from? Bubbles in sparkling wine occur due to several factors – the amount of sugar and yeast in the wine, along with the amount of time the wine ages. In many cases, the way winemakers create sparkling wine is by adding additional yeast and sugar to wine already in bottles. The bottles are then rotated systematically for a few months to a few years depending on the wine. There are many other ways to make sparkling wine. But this is one of the most popular ways, often known as the ‘traditional method’ or ‘classic method.’
Popular sparkling wine regions There are many different places where sparkling wine is made. The most popular types of sparkling wines generally correspond to their area of origin. These include: • Champagne (Sparkling wine from France’s Champagne region) • Cava (Spanish sparkling wine) • Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) You can also find many great sparkling wines from other parts of France, California, Argentina, Canada and practically anywhere in the world. Sweetness levels in sparkling wine The more sugar in a sparkling wine, the sweeter the wine tastes. There are six basic levels of sweetness. From sweetest to driest, the six different sweetness levels for sparkling wines are: doux, demi sec, sec, extra dry, brut, and extra brut. SEE WINE, PAGE E11

Grapes used to make sparkling wine Winemakers use all different types of grapes to make sparkling wine. Some of the most common grapes, particularly in France’s Champagne region, include: Chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier. Certain grapes are also often used to make other types of sparking wine, including glera for prosecco and cabernet sauvignon, garnacha or monastrell, which are often added to cava. Many other types of grapes are also often used to make sparkling wine, which explains the wide range of flavors for different ones. Vintage vs. non vintage Often, grapes harvested from different years are blended together to make sparkling wines. These ones are non vintage sparkling wines. You’ll often see the letters “NV” on these sparkling wines. Vintage sparkling wines are made with grapes harvested during a single year. Wine tasting notes Domaine Bousquet Brut Sparkling Rose (Mendoza, Argentina) Made with a blend of 75% pinot noir and 25% chardonnay, this crisp, bright, refreshing, dry sparkling wine is one of my new favorite, affordable sparkling wines. Let me add that this wine still tasted dazzling the day after I first opened the bottle. Absolutely delightful.

Le Grand Courtage Brut (Burgundy, France) Made with in Burgundy with grapes from several French wine regions, this crisp, flinty refreshing sparkling wine more than held its own against many higher priced wines. Pol Roger Non Vintage Brut Champagne (Champagne, France) Winston Churchill knew how to live life. When he wasn’t running England, leading his country through World War II or writing some of the most iconic phrases in the English language, Churchill loved his cigars, his scotch and his Champagne. And when it came to the bubbly, Churchill adored Pol Roger. He reportedly drank a bottle every day for lunch. You don’t have to do the same. But I highly recommend this bone dry, flinty Champagne with a crisp, slightly chalky finish. Ayala Brut Majeur (Champagne, France) One of the great things about many great wine regions is how many amazing wines come from one small place. That’s certainly the case with this elegant Champagne created by this under-the-radar Champagne house. Blended by female cellar master Caroline Latrive, this combination of 40% chardonnay, 40% pinot noir and 20% pinot meunier has a bright, lively, crisp finish with a playful touch of fruitiness on the nose. And who couldn’t use something light and playful right now in their lives? Cheers! Wine Press by Ken Ross appears on Masslive.com every Monday and in The Republican’s weekend section every Thursday.
