LTHOUGH IT’S mainly viewed as a venue for theatrical productions, the Majestic Theater in West Springfield has quite a lineup of other offerings — mostly musical — in the next few months. The first of these, however, is a Feb. 5 comedy show featuring The Majesters, an improvisational comic troupe that graces the stage there several times a year. This show will have a Valentine’s Day theme. The comical group will also return on March 11. Tickets are $15 at the door. Music and romance will be in the air on Feb. 6 when the theater presents another Valentine’s Day show, “Freddie Marion & Friends: Love… Yesterday, Today & Always” at 2 and 7 p.m. The performance showcases numerous popular love songs under the musical direction of Dan Kane, who also serves as the keyboardist for the show. Marion studied at both the Hartford Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, and performs all styles of music, from Jackson Browne to Tony Bennett. Heading into St. Patrick’s Day, Bo Fitzgerald & the Yank Celt Band will play their own take on songs from

Freddie Marion and Dan Kane want to fill the world — or, at the very least, the Majestic Theater in West Springfield — with silly love songs. And what’s wrong with that? The Valentine’s concert — “Love ... Yesterday, Today & Always” — will be staged on Feb. 6 at 2 and 7 p.m. “When we talk about the title of the show — the music is yesterday, the love is today and always,” said Marion, who will sing the songs. “Love songs of yesterday is really what it is. There’s nothing that’s out currently that’s on our playlist.” Kane, the show’s musical director, will accompany him on the piano. “Strange but true, a lot of the love songs that are out there are anti love songs. They are about not only hearts in love but hearts broken. But it’s not only going to be that. Love is a word that is often used to describe the feeling for another person, but it’s of all the things in our

It all began with the Dan Kane Singers, a group of about 150, performing regularly at the MassMutual Center and Springfield Symphony Hall. A group of five or 10 of those singers would then be selected to play the Valentine shows. “After a time it gets really hard to come up with original Singer Freddie Marion. AMHERST

Drum Tao show is not only about the drums Japanese drumming ensemble to play UMass Amherst tonight By Keith O’Connor

Special to The Republican

What makes Drum Tao, performing at UMass Amherst tonight at 7:30 p.m., the international phenomenon they have become for the past 30 years — the drum or the drummers? The answer is both. The innovative Japanese drumming ensemble are known for their fresh take on traditional Japanese taiko drums accomplished by endless hours of practice to perfect the pounding beats that are the centerpiece of the show. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. in Frederick C. Tillis Performance Hall of the Bromery Center for the Arts. A Drum Tao show is not only about the drums. Performances incorporate Japanese flute and guitar alongside bold acrobatic choreography, vibrant sets and contemporary costuming. Taiko are traditional Japanese drums known for their sound similar to rumbling thunder. They are barrel shaped with lashed or tacked heads and usually played with sticks (ba-

chi). Members of Drum Tao undergo one to three years of constant study to be cast an official drummer of the group. Comparing a Drum Tao performance to the majesty of a Cirque du Soleil show is no coincidence. In 1993, founder and director Ikuo Fujitaka was inspired by the Cirque du Soleil show Mystère and went on to create a taiko performance in the spirit of Cirque du Soleil. Today, ensemble members commit many hours to creating memorable performances for audiences. Many people in the United States have never experienced the art form, while there are a wide range of taiko drumming troupes across Japan. Every day for Drum Tao when not performing begins at 5:30 a.m. when they gather to train and practice. They begin by running together for 8 miles, afterwards beating their drums in place for one hour without a break for muscle and mental training. Breakfast is followed by martial arts training and workouts. The rest of the day is spent practicing drum and dance technique and composition until 10 p.m. Currently on their North American Tour 2024 which began in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Drum Tao made their off-Broadway debut in the United States in 2016. now or no snow, Greenfield’s 102nd annual Winter Carnival is a go this weekend. “Who doesn’t like to be outside having fun in the wintertime, but the carnival doesn’t entirely depend on having snow,” said Christy Moore, director, Greenfield Recreation Department. “But we’re hoping that Mother Nature cooperates anyway.”

“We’ve been together since we were younger,” Kane said. “Much, much, much younger.” (“That’s the yesterday of the show,” Marion joked.) “I know a little bit about how he musically thinks and he knows how I musically think, so it really is great when you have two musicians - a singer and a piano player - in sync,” Kane explained. “It does not happen all that often in the professional world of music. People come from different backgrounds, (but) we come from the same, so it’s very exciting to get great ideas and then alter them to make them even more musical, not only to excite the audience but to excite us, the performers.” “When you put Dan and I together in a room, it’s often really spontaneous, but magic happens, as opposed to other people that I work with. We find things that are not where you normally expect them to go,” Marion added. The Majestic Theater is the perfect setting for the duo’s Valentine’s concert, because of its intimate performance space. “What is more intimate than love songs?” Kane said. “People will definitely come with partners, friends, husbands, wives, and we tend to draw an older crowd because we’re doing the American Songbook, for the most part. It’s just great where they’re 5 feet away from you, it’s almost like they’re part of the show.” Kane also praised Marion for making the show so special, comparing his stage presence to the likes of Wayne Newton and Elvis. “It just pulls people right into the show, and they love it,” Kane said of his stage partner’s talent. “It feels so homey.” The duo explained that they are at the mercy of the Majestic Theater, working each year with the set of whatever play is currently being staged. This year, they’re lucky, the duo said, because the stage is set up to look like a cozy living room, which is perfect

‘Loud budgeting’ is going viral — Let’s not forget classic and some restaurants are worried beers like Smithwick’s

ESTAURANTS have become increasingly dependent on social media as a way of communicating with their customer base. Many have abandoned traditional advertising and, in some instances, even relegated their web sites to the role of little more than online order pads. But social media doesn’t just offer dining establishments a seemingly cheap and easy pipeline to customers. TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook impact popular culture in ways that might not always prove beneficial to the businesses that attract the eyeballs those channels need to survive. Since the start of 2024 a new social media trend, loud budgeting, has gone viral on TikTok, and financial commentators are already warning that the fad could spell trouble for restaurants along with other segments of the consumer economy. “Loud budgeting” is the Ice cream means big smiles at Flayvors of Cook Farm in Hadposting of social media mes- ley. LOVE THE ONGOING current revolution and renaissance of craft beer as much as anyone. The past 40 years – especially the past 20 – have brought forth an amazing amount of innovation and ingenuity when it comes to beer. It’s not an exaggeration to say we live in a golden age of beer right George Lenker now. While we can sometimes Beer Nut roll our eyes at some of the extreme ingredients added to our favorite beverage, or occasionally quibble about how far boundaries should be stretched, there’s no debate that the creativity that is being fostered in the name of beer is pretty amazing. But today, I’m putting all that on the back burner to talk about a classic brew that has probably been forgotten in many corners. As regular readers will know, I’m a fairly frequent visitor to Ireland. The Emerald Isle certainly has its own robust craft beer scene.
