I work in Theatres at Frenchay. I have been here since March 2000; I previously worked at Bath, Swindon and Cheltenham. I have been a member of Unison since 1983; I was also active within Nalgo. I became an activist in Unison in 1999; when I was approached about becoming a Health and Safety (H&S) Officer within the Concorde Unison branch. As the Health and Safety Officer I attend all relevant meetings within my directorate, and I raise concerns or issues within these meetings; making management aware of current concerns within the Trust.
I came to Bristol in 1974 to do my nurse training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Once qualified I left England to go to live in Tuscon, Arizona for two years. On my return to England, I did various types of nursing after having my two children. I came to Frenchay Hospital in 1995 and started in theatres; where I am at present. I became a member of Unison 6 years ago, becoming an activist 3 years ago, firstly as the Vice Chairperson for Unison; for a year, then Chairperson for another year, and most recently, Unison Branch Secretary. I attend all relevant meetings with management, human resources and staff; representing my members with any issues that concern them great or small. I work across site at Southmead Hospital and Frenchay Hospital, but I am mainly based at Frenchay. I consider myself fortunate to be in Unison, to be able to represent our members, be there for them and hope to be able to continue my duties for many a year.
I was born in Manchester, from Jamaican parentage. I am a Registered Nurse of 23 years; worked on an acute surgical ward in London for 3 years, Weston General Hospital on a acute medical ward for 2 years, and the Bristol General Hospital; theatres until I decided to do further training and develop my career. I joined North Bristol Trust in February 2008, to work in the operating theatres at Frenchay Hospital. I have been a Unison member for over 8 years and have felt that it is time for me to become more active in my branch. At this time of such radical changes to the NHS all members need a formidable voice from their Union that is not frightened to say what is right. I am the black members and Equalities Diversity officer for North Bristol Healthcare Trust, I will be working and engaging with all ethnic minority groups within Frenchay and Southmead Hospital, and supporting staff with any issues or concerns they have within the workplace.
