October was a very busy and focused month for Research Medical Center entities and we accomplished great things, including getting ready for a big survey.

The news that Research Medical Center earned an “A” in the fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score is simply amazing! This scoring uses 28 measures of our publicly reported data and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog organization funded by some of largest companies in the country. I think this is one indicator that we are doing the right things to enhance the quality of patient care here. This journey is powerful so keep up the great work and congratulations! Full story on pg. 10. Beginning this month, we are adding a new movement disorders clinic to our scope of specialty services for patients and referring physicians. Neurologist Muhammad Nashatizadeh, MD, is now accepting patient appointments through our neurology office. More information can be found on pg. 6. We will soon be deploying a recruitment campaign that includes sign-on bonuses for certain positions and referral bonuses for employees who refer candidates for these positions. Our volume has grown this year and we need to hire more great clinicians to help serve this increase in patient volume. We need employees and physicians to refer great candidates who want to work here. You’ll be hearing more about it soon. It’s a great honor that Research Medical Center recently earned recognition as one of the “Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization. You can read more about this on pg. 10. Our 2015 benefits enrollment period is this month. Please make your benefit selections between November 11 and the November 25 deadline. HCA offers excellent benefit options so I hope you will take advantage of these. Research Medical Center has a lot planned for employees and medical staff to celebrate the holiday season. Research Medical Center Announces New Chief Financial Officer Research Medical Center is pleased to introduce John Krajicek as our new Chief Financial Officer. He will be moving from his role at division to Research, effective November 17. This promotion reflects John’s history of dedication and commitment to monitoring and strengthening accounting and financial functions across the board at our hospitals, physician practices, and surgery centers. John has proven a high level of strategic and analytical healthcare financial leadership since joining HCA in August 2006. He is adept at negotiating management contracts, monitoring expenses, pinpointing revenue enhancements, and in formulating strategies to realize opportunities for growth.

Research Psychiatric Center Welcomes Leaders Cynthia Benbow, LMSW, has been promoted to Director of Clinical Services at Research Psychiatric Center. The Director of Clinical Services will provide leadership for our clinical staff, including social work, case management, occupational therapies and outpatient services. Research Psychiatric Center’s goal is to provide excellent clinical care to our very vulnerable patients. This position is vital to that goal. In her current role, Cynthia has successfully integrated the Call Center and the Compass staff. She adopted the mobile assessment team and has advanced the teleassessment services throughout HCA Midwest and the metro. Cynthia will bring her specific skills and diplomacy to the Clinical Services role with a focus on continually improving the interface between the departments. Cynthia is a 14 year veteran of the Research Psychiatric Center family and brings extensive knowledge of not only the inner workings of the facility, but the resources in our community. Ryan Diehl, RN, has been promoted to the position of Director of Special Services at Research Psychiatric Center. Ryan has been a part of the Research Psychiatric Center team for some time. He served two different stints as an interim Nurse Director and has worked as a House Supervisor. Ryan is a proven leader at Research Psychiatric Center and we are excited to welcome him as a permanent member of nursing leadership. In his new role, Ryan will continue to provide oversight for the Adolescent Program and the STAR Program.

WE CARE A monthly focus on a Research Medical Center team The Intensive Care Unit, widely known as ICU, is a specialty department providing intensive care to patients with the most severe and life-threatening illnesses and injuries, which require constant, close invasive monitoring and support. Staffed by highly trained doctors and critical care nurses, Research Medical Center has a surgical ICU and a medical ICU. The staff here apply critical thinking, compassion, empathy and respect on a daily basis. As said by one of the nurses, “We are like an octopus with a nursing license.” They are a cohesive team, always up for a challenge and they enjoy the close relationships with patients and family that develop from continuous interaction. Research Medical Center Receives Top Honors in Stroke and Heart Failure American Heart Association Announces Get With The Guidelines Awards Right now, 5.7 million Americans are living with heart failure. Research Medical Center has teamed up with the American Heart Association in their campaign to attack the problem from all sides. Research Medical Center has earned the Get With The Guidelines Heart Failure Gold Plus Target: Heart Failure award for reducing hospital re-admissions and helping patients improve their quality of life by managing this chronic condition. Outcomes for acute ischemic stroke patients depend in large part on how and when the patient is treated. Together with the American Heart Association, Research Medical Center has eliminated treatment delays and improved door-to-needle time to within 43 minutes in 2013, which is above the national average of 60 minutes, earning Research Medical Center the Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Target: Stroke.

Brad Freilich, MD, AGAF on Forefront of Revolutionary New Hepatitis C Diagnosis and Treatment The statistics are staggering: according to the CDC, an estimated 3.2 million individuals in the United States have chronic Hepatitis C virus infection (HCV), a viral disease that causes inflammation of the liver that can lead to diminished liver function or failure. In October, the U.S. FDA approved Gilead’s Harvoni, the first once-daily single tablet regiment for the treatment of chronic HCV. According to study investigator Dr. Freilich, medical director of the Hepatitis Treatment Clinic at Research Medical Center and Kansas City Gastroenterology and Hepatology Physicians Group, this approval represents a game-changer for those living with HCV and the millions who haven’t been diagnosed with the debilitating disease. “The FDA approved a once-daily drug that has the potential of curing 94 to 98 percent of people with chronic HCV and making the disease rare by 2026,” he says. “This is revolutionary —a word I don’t often use.” Halina Handsaker, 65, of Overland Park, Kan., has been a patient of Dr. Freilich’s for 15 years. She was diagnosed with HCV in 1988, two years following a surgery where she received a blood transfusion. Beginning in June 2013, she started on a clinical trial with Harvoni. Handsaker says she had virtually no side effects and watched her liver numbers go down, a sign of improvement. She was notified that she was cured of HCV. Dr. Freilich notes because people don’t look or feel sick, most with chronic HCV are unaware they have the disease until liver damage becomes apparent, which may take several years. HCV can lead to complications such as cirrhosis, bleeding, jaundice (yellowish eyes or skin); fluid accumulation in the abdomen; infections; or liver cancer. More than 1 million people die every year from HCV- and NAFLD-related liver disease.

The CDC and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force are recommending that primary care physicians offer screening to patients born between 1945 and 1965, which is the main demographic group that has HCV, regardless of symptoms or risk factors. It is estimated that 33 to 50 percent of people with HCV haven’t been diagnosed. As the only area clinician to have experience with this newest generation of FDA-approved Hepatitis C drugs, Dr. Freilich has a unique perspective on the spectrum of HCV treatment. As a result, he opened the Hepatitis Treatment Clinic at Kansas City Gastroenterology and Hepatology Physicians Group on Research Medical Center’s Brookside Campus to facilitate screening of potential HCV in patients, and provide expert diagnosis, care and access to drugs effective in treating chronic HCV and fatty liver disease.

Cancer Corner Patient Navigation Through Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health Patient navigation is special to Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health. All of our navigators are oncology-trained nurses and they work directly with patients to help navigate them through their cancer journey from discovery to recovery. The formal navigation process developed through Sarah Cannon allows our navigators to comprehensively manage a patient’s journey with cancer. This patient navigation system addresses the continuum of cancer care. The cancer patient navigator serves as a constant point of contact for physicians, the cancer patient and their families to coordinate care, answer questions, and provide resources. Awards Given at Seventh Annual Dinner Several years ago Research Medical Center brought together a group of hospital and community clergy to plan the first Community Leader Dinner. The event proved to be a wonderful way to recognize community and hospital leaders for their efforts to support Research Medical Center and surrounding communities. The seventh annual dinner was held Thursday, October 23 with great participation. Awards were presented to those pictured below for their outstanding commitments to Research Medical Center.

The Grounds Crew was honored for their community service in providing well kept grounds and buildings that are inviting, attractive, welcoming, and safe for the people of Research Medical Center and the community. David Ehler, Assistant Director of Plant Operations, was recognized for his outstanding service and dedicated leadership. Angel Gowns Donated to Research Medical Center NICU NICU Helping Hands’ Angel Gown program began in 2013, in recognition of the overwhelming need to support families who lost a baby while in the hospital. The Angel Gown program provides comfort for families by providing a beautiful gown for final photos and for burial services. “There is no greater gift that can be given to a grieving family than affirming the importance of the life of their child by offering this simple gift,” a volunteer said. Each gown is sewn with love while prayers are said for grieving families by volunteer seamstresses. The gowns are constructed from donated wedding gowns. Without your help, many of our Research Medical Center (RMC) co-workers and their families will experience a very meager holiday season this year. Research Medical Center Named as “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by National Organization Research Medical Center Highlighted in Healthcare Equality Index 2014 Research Medical Center has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization. The findings were part of HRC Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index 2014, a unique annual survey that encourages equal care for LGBT Americans, and recognizes healthcare institutions doing the best work. Research Medical Center earned top marks in meeting non-discrimination and training criteria that demonstrate its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients, and their families. Research Medical Center was one of a select group of 426 healthcare facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet key criteria, including patient and employee nondiscrimination policies that specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members. The Healthcare Equality Index offers healthcare facilities unique and powerful resources designed to help provide equal care to patients, as well as assistance in complying with new regulatory requirements and access to high-quality staff training.

Research Medical Center Recognized for Outstanding Patient Safety Awarded an “A” in Fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score Research Medical Center was honored with an “A” grade in the Fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group (Leapfrog), an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay. Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in fall 2014, with about 31-percent receiving an “A” grade. Trauma Center Association of America’s Annual Conference Research Medical Center leaders selected to present poster Scott Bjerke, MD, and Melissa Quintero, MSN, RN, CEN, of Research Medical Center’s Trauma Services, attended the Trauma Center Association of America’s Annual Conference in San Antonio. The poster was on “An Evaluation of Incident Command Activation Response Training in a Level 1 Trauma Center.” It included an introduction, the method, results and discussion/conclusion as well as a graph on the percentage of agreement prior to and after ICART proving that training hospital leadership and staff is key in responding to an incident involving a violent intruder in a hospital setting. The use of scenariobased training involving real world examples should be used more in hospitals around the country.
