Automotive and Transport Sector in India Monthly Update November 2012
Top Story Heavy discounts on luxury cars Luxury car makers BMW, Audi, Mercedes‐Benz and their dealers are collectively offering discounts up to 15% or nearly INR 1 mn on certain models. Luxury car dealers benefit from a higher margin nearly 8‐9% than the small car dealers with 2‐3% margin. Hence, they can offer large discounts, over 10% on outgoing models such as the BMW X1 and Mercedes‐Benz's petrol cars. Audi has come up with financing schemes and extended warranty, along with discounts of 3‐5 % or INR 0.1‐0.25 mn. Further, discounts are provided by the dealers based on their stock situation. Mercedes‐Benz is also offering discount ranging between INR 0.15 to 0.3 mn on the Mercedes C Class, depending on the variant and dealerships, INR 0.4‐0.6 mn on the E Class and around INR 0.8 mn on the S Class. BMW is providing sales support on some of the outgoing models and not offering discounts. However, lucrative schemes are available through BMW Finance on some models. Sluggish auto sales coupled with depreciating currency have been a major cause of concern for the luxury car makers in India. High discounts are being offered to revive sales. However, such price wars are not sustainable in the long run, impacting the image of the luxury products. BMW has asked its dealers not to offer any discounts from next year. Further, it is expected to increase prices up to 10% from Jan 1st 2013. AP Govt plans policy on agri warehousing development in PPP mode The Andhra Pradesh government plans a comprehensive policy for the development of agricultural warehousing facilities in public‐private partnership (PPP) model. This initiative will address increasing demand for warehousing facilities. The special chief secretary of state agriculture marketing and cooperative department has suggested that the demand for modern warehousing facilities was increasing with the introduction of the Food Security Bill. Rising cost of land hinders the development of modern warehousing facilities. Further scarce post‐harvest storage and transportation are causing a 40% loss of the produce in the country. Hence such initiative by the state government will value add to the agricultural sector accelerating both agricultural and economic growth. News Update
