Industry Expert Speak There’s no such thing as foolproof security, you can only increase the levels of deterrence – Dinesh Pillai, CEO, Mahindra SSG “If you look at DR/BC in manufacturing, if anything happens at the plant level, it is unlikely that you can do anything to recover from that. What you do is look at your critical processes, at things like customer service and compliance that have to revive. In the financial sector, the daily report has to be generated. In DR, crisis management (how do you react to a disaster) is being practiced by most organizations. DR is still being looked at as an IT backup. This is more on the technology front. If you are looking at BC, then it’s a different game. There you are looking at a situation where a process has to come back up within a few hours. The BC plan will involve an alternate facility, workforce, technology etc. That’s much more complicated and few companies are geared towards that unless pushed to do so by regulations.” We are deploying an enterprisewide data warehouse and enabling mobile sales & service – N Eswaranatarajan, Head, Operations & Technology, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. “Our IT landscape is distributed and vast. Our IT solutions are all centrally aligned. Everyone in the organization has access to various IT systems and solutions, which are centrally controlled. We have six core application systems that form the backbone for our entire sales and servicing functions. These include our e‐commerce Web site, rules management system, core policy administration system, claims system, data warehouse & reporting system and the CRM system. Partnering with IT solution vendors, our aim is to deliver better service to our customers by using the most efficient and innovative technology services. Apart from these, there are several satellite applications and systems that support these core applications. Every year, we prioritize projects across these core and satellite systems or new innovation projects that can either improve operational efficiency or bring additional revenues or increase profitability for the company.” Shuffling between the personal, private and public Cloud is a peak problem for IT – Nabeel Youakim, Vice President, Asia Pacific Products & Microsoft Alliance, Citrix Systems “Firstly, there is the BYOD trend. There is also the need to use public Cloud models while at the same time deploying more desktops and upgrading Windows and rolling out new applications. CIOs are getting pulled in different directions. The PC is no longer the center of attention. Other devices are more on people's minds. IT has to transform its set‐up for the Cloud era. They have to build data centers assuming that the majority of the workforce will be mobile and that BYOD will be pervasive. Most employees will have to shuffle between personal, private and public Cloud services. This is a peak problem for IT as there is lot of internal data that circulates amongst these three. It is obvious that the personal Cloud is really about the mobile workforce and about using any device and not
IT, Telecom and Electronics – Monthly Update
just a PC. The challenge for IT guys is to ensure that data is available from all of these devices but that access to it is controlled. On the other hand, the private and public Cloud are merging. Sometimes, without IT's control, employees are using Cloud applications. Citrix products like Xenserver and CloudStack allow you to build the private and public Cloud in the same way. There needs to be a bridge from the private Cloud in a company’s data center to the public Cloud. It is vital that, whatever data access is needed, it should be provided from a centralized location. We are building a new low‐cost model for thin‐clients, which is called Citrix HDX. It costs only $99 as compared to a normal thin‐client that costs $300. We are working with Texas Instruments and Ncomputing and they are building HDX technology into their chipsets. They call it System‐on‐a‐Chip. They are going to be building these chips at a much lower cost, which they will sell to thin‐client terminal manufacturers.” We are seeing a lot of requirements coming from nonmetro cities – Vivek Rawat, Director Ecosystem & Channel, SAP India “We have started seeing a lot of requirements coming from non‐metro cities in India. We have put a gold strategy in place this year to expand beyond the metros. Then there’s a program called Extended Business Members (EBM) where channel partners tie‐up with VARs and do value added market coverage.”
