There is a huge need for quality products. This specific sector is plagued by a huge trust deficit,
IT, Telecom and Electronics – Monthly Update
very little organized retail and proliferation of spurious/ refurbished goods being sold as new. Also, most of the quality products are at best available only in top 3‐4 cities, but they are required all over India. Hence, through e‐commerce, we bring authentic & high quality products from around the world to every corner of India, at very affordable prices. Consumer awareness is growing, and an empowered consumer does read about his condition and looks for solutions online. More and more people access internet to learn about health and healthy living, and options available in India and around the world. So, they do come online, and are often happy to find that many of the great products they seek are now available with the click of a mouse. We do not sell prescription medication, or in any way encourage people to not counsel their doctors for their conditions. We offer consumer health products – which people need and want increasingly.” To meet the standards set by MNCs, Indian providers will have to adopt technology to survive and excel – Sudesh Jain, Senior vice President (IT), Transport Corporation of India “The logistics industry in India is evolving rapidly. The penetration of IT at Indian companies in the logistics sector is relatively low in comparison to that of foreign players. However, Indian players are realizing the importance of technology and are increasingly investing in it. IT enabled technologies will streamline business processes and lead to customer satisfaction. Technology allows these companies to operate from anywhere and, at the same time, maintain visibility and control. With the rapid entry of global players, Indian third‐party logistics (3PL) service providers will have to adopt technology in order to sustain and innovative technology will help them remain competent. Also, to meet the service standards set by large multinational companies in this sector, there is no option for the smaller players but to adopt technology for them to survive and excel in such a business environment. Today’s logistics players have increasingly started investing in IT. By deploying, the latest technological processes, logistics companies are able to deliver result‐oriented solutions, which allow them to increase service efficiency and reduce overall costs. Moreover, it also helps them in integrating their operations with partners and customers.” We need security that follows the database rather than the network – Michael Sentonas, Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Asia Pacific, McAfee “In the past, there has been so much focus on protecting data in general, that databases unfortunately got left behind in the race for data security. Some of the most important information that resides within any organization is stored in a database—business, sales, financial or even customer information. In most cases, the database is a sacred entity and organizations do not want to install security features on them and this had led to a lack of focus on database security. However, there have been many publicly known cases wherein databases have been compromised and information was extracted. It is only now that organizations have started looking at implementing some level of database security. SQL injections are a classic example of an attack that extracts data from a database and still continues to be IT, Telecom and Electronics – Monthly Update
the number one attack vector affecting databases. Each month, there are new vulnerabilities that are discovered, which target common databases such as SQL Server and Oracle. Each time that vulnerability is discovered, a new patch is rolled out looking to plug the security hole for that particular database offering. Typically, a database solution would have multiple patches that resolve various issues including security vulnerabilities. Applying these patches would require stopping access to the database. Therefore, database administrators usually plan the patching process during non‐production hours.” OpenFlow will future proof enterprise networks – Sanjay Joshi, HP Networking, HP India “OpenFlow is part of a global initiative of Software Defined Networks (SDN). A typical piece of networking equipment has two components from a technology standpoint. One is the control path that controls the decision making of that box. The other is a packet forwarding path. There is a data packet that comes into the product from one port and that data packet is examined and the decision is taken by the control path to either drop it, forward it to some other port or to repackage and then forward the same. Another component is the data path. Most vendors in the industry have their control and data forwarding paths in the same product. What OpenFlow does is that it centralizes the control path, so that there is a OpenFlow Controller that takes all decisions and, once the decision is taken for any particular packet, then that change is updated on the product itself.” Smaller companies have realized that it’s better to recover rather than recreate data – Sunil Chandana, CEO, Stellar Data Recovery “There are two patterns visible here. Earlier, business came solely from the B2B segment and there were hardly any SME customers. However, smaller companies have woken up to the cost efficiency of recovering data rather than recreating it. SOHO still remains untapped as there are no single users who believe in restoring lost data or corrupt files. With advances in technology, there are more complications in the way that data is stored. At the same time, the increased threat of virus attacks, data pilferage or systems crashing exists. People are slowly adopting these solutions as an investment rather than as a cost.”
