Cable transmission to switch from analog to digital by June The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is in process of mandating the Ordinance on Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, which will require the cable transmission to switch from analog to digital platform by June. This transformation will be completed in places such as Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Set‐Top‐Boxes (STBs) will be compulsory for viewing any cable channel and viewers will not be able to watch the pay as well as free to air channels without subscribing to it. Multi‐system operators such as DigiCable, SitiCable, Manthan, AMBC, Howrah Cineline expect to see an extension in the deadline by atleast two months. The Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) ‐ Kalyani in the east to Maheshtala in the west, and Bally in the north to Barasat in the south will observe digitisation. Presently, there are 33 mn television homes in Kolkata Metropolitan area out of which 0.28 mn subscribe to DTH and 0.3 mn have STBs from cable operators. Under digitisation, subscribers will only have to pay for the channels they wish to see. The media and entertainment industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in India at present. Consumer spending towards entertainment is also on a rise due to a sustained increase in disposable incomes. The film and entertainment market is experiencing a number of expansions and launches of multiplex and single screens across the country. With technological advancements and competitive marketing strategies the movie industry is increasingly getting more corporatised. Companies are coming up with public issues and raising capital in order to increase its operations. However, the industry is private‐dominated and the government has not taken much initiative to help this sector to grow. Balaji Telefilms sells its media education and mobile content business Balaji Telefilms, a content production house has entered a deal to sell its media education and mobile content business for INR 83.7 mn to an undisclosed buyer. However, the deal will not include the artist hiring portal, Hoonur.com which has been a part of the company’s media division. The deal had been announced early last year. The company’s media education arm runs the ICE Institute of Creative Excellence that imparts training on various areas related to the media and entertainment industry, such as acting, cinematography, editing, production, scriptwriting, sound engineering and direction. It’s mobile content division partners with Telecommunication companies like MTS, Idea, Aircel, Airtel, BSNL, Reliance and produces audio and video content. Reliance Industries to invest in TV18 Group Reliance Industries plans to invest over INR 15 bn in TV18 Group which comprises of two major businesses, the Network18 Group and the Eenadu Group. A RIL subsidiary will help the promoter group to fund the rights issues of the two listed companies, Network18 Media and Investments, which run the moneycontrol.com portal, and TV18 Broadcast Ltd, which is a house to a number of news channels, namely, CNBC TV18 and CNN‐IBN. The investment will be utilized by Network18 Group to pay off its debts and finally buy out RIL’s stake in Eenadu. 9XM partners with Hungama to launch music store 9XM and Hungama, leading operators in the music industry has partnered together to launch an online Interactive Voice Response (IVR) radio and Bollywood music store, ‘9XM.Hungama.com’. This store will allow users to select and download songs and movie trailers according to their preferences. It will facilitate music across various digital media at affordable prices. The group has also launched the ‘9XM Radio’ which will air songs, interviews and more. Users are given the facility to set the songs as their callertune via service which is available on web, WAP and IVR. SUN TV to launch ad­free movie channels in southern India Sun TV Network has launched four ad‐free movie channels in the southern states of India. These channels are aired in four local languages, Sun Action in Tamil, Gemini Action in Telugu, Suriyan TV in Kannada and Surya Action in Malayalam. Content costs for these channels will be low considering their collection of movies, which includes more than 8000 films. Subscription revenue will also be minimal. However, SUN TV is still absent from the state owned Arasu cable which lowers the numbers of subscribers in Tamil Nadu. The launch of these channels is a value addition to their portfolio. BligFlix launches Video­on­Demand service in India BigFlix, a Reliance Big Entertainment venture and one of the established online‐offline movie rental service in India, has launched an online video‐on‐demand service, ‘BigFlix plus’. This service allows users to watch more than 500 movies on devices like PCs, Tablets and mobiles. BigFlix also allows users to download High Definition quality content for a subscription fee of INR 249 per month. This service helps customers view their preferred movies without any interruption. BigFlix plus will offer a wide range of Hindi, English and regional movies to its subscribers. This service is made available on android devices, smart TVs and some of the devices. Star India to buy movie rights from Viacom 18 Viacom 18 Media has recently sold the rights of a number of Hindi movie titles to its rival, Star India for INR 4‐4.5 bn. The company has acquired rights to air most of the films, upto 7 years, considering the deals struck by Viacom 18 with individual producers. The sale will strengthen Star India’s network position which has already gained recognition in the Hindi movie space with over 700 titles in store. Launching a movie channel in the current market is difficult according to industry experts which may have led Viacom 18 to sell the rights. Viacom 18 Media is an equal joint venture between the US’ Viacom Inc. and the Network18 Group which operates the entertainment channel, Colors. Star India Pvt. Ltd. is a renowned name in the film and entertainment industry which runs the Star Gold movie channel. Competition is leading companies in this space to acquire new titles. BIG CBS to launch international Punjabi channel BIG CBS, a joint venture between Reliance Broadcast Network Limited and CBS Studios International, is set to launch an international Punjabi channel, Spark Punjabi. The channel will feature some of the finest CBS content dubbed in Punjabi, Punjabi music, international movies translated in regional language and local programmes. It plans to air some of the most popular shows which include Jerry Springer, Hawaii Five‐O, Masked Warriors and more. BIG CBS is trying to enter the television market with this new venture through its flagship channel, ‘Spark’. The channel operates three channels, specifically, BIG CBS Prime, BIG CBS Love and BIG CBS Spark. It will be available in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. FIPB approves FDI for TV Vision TV Vision has received approval from the Government, on the recommendation of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), to raise capital worth INR 2 bn through fresh issue of equity shares in the form of Foreign Direct Investment. LG and Gaikai partners to provide Cloud Gaming A Leading player in the consumer electronics space, LG Electronics and Gaikai Inc., an online gaming service provider, have entered into a partnership to bring cloud gaming to LG Cinema 3D TVs. Users will be able to use their Smart TV sign‐in and play a wide range of games. This new venture will reduce the purchase and set up costs of video games and also allow pioneers to build direct digital relationships with their users. Consumers are also provided the facility to select their preferred game and play instantly without any downloads or installation. FM operators object to TRAI’s proposal FM operators, apart from Radio Mirchi, did not support the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) proposal to increase the number of radio stations in metropolitan cities within the existing FM radio bandwidth by reducing the channel spacing between two radio stations. Operators cited reasons such as rising costs, devaluation of current radio business, and negative impact on the quality of sound for opposing to this proposal. The Radio stations will also have to shell out INR 100 mn to make the modifications. TRAI is trying to imbibe the norms applicable in the western countries such as US and Europe. Presently, New York has 44 FM stations between 88‐108 MHz and London has 42 FM stations within the prescribed FM radio bandwidth. It looks forward to restructure the frequency allocation plan for FM radio in India by reducing the channel spacing between two FM stations from 800 Kilo Hertz (KHz) to 400 KHz. Mahuaa Media launches a news channel in UP and Uttarakhand Mahuaa Media, a media venture of Century Communication, is launching a news channel, Mahuaa Newsline in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The channel will primarily focus on the forthcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It plans to deal with the political and financial issues that have been left unaddressed. It will also feature programmes to promote awareness of the history and culture of the two states. The launch of this channel is a value addition to their portfolio which includes Pragya TV, Mahuaa Bangla, Mahuaa Bhojpuri, Mahuaa News Hindi and Mahuaa News Bangla. Karnataka to launch Kannada news channel Karnataka is set to launch a 24 hour Kannada news channel, Public TV. The channel has been promoted by Writemen Media, an independent company which has been established to start this venture. The channel has been designed for the common people and it aims to bring in a system of transparency. up to less than 25% of the estimated amount. A journalist will be appointed by the channel who will manage the overall operations. Cellcast to launch the first social TV channel in India Cellcast Interactive has launched the first social TV channel in India, MyTV. This channel will be ad‐free but the brands will be integrated into the content. The channel will feature programmes such as Bid2Win, My Studio, The Big Deal, Chor Machaye Shor and more. It is a free to air channel which will be available in western, eastern and northern India and will reach over 35 mn analog/digital homes including multiple DTH platforms. It targets audiences within the 15 and above age group. The channel is distributed by Cellcast Interactive's distribution partner, BAG Network. MediaCom bags the KDD (India) media business MediaCom India has procured the KDD (India) media business. This business will be handled by the Bangalore office of the company. It believes that its products will add value to KDD’s business. KDD (India) is a branch of the KDD Kuwait, a leading manufacturer and distributor of food and beverage products in the Arabian Gulf markets. MediaCom, on the other hand, is an established media agency. TV Today assigns its creative mandate to Blackpencil TV Today Network has assigned the creative mandate of its portfolio to Blackpencil India. It would include Aaj Tak, Headlines Today and Oye 104.8 FM. Blackpencil has won the contract on a retainership basis. Blackpencil India is a latest agency from the Leo Burnett Group Worldwide. TV Today Network is a part of the India Today Group and an established name in the media industry. ChaYoWo launches a new mobile game ChaYoWo Games, an established casual game developer, has launched a new game, Backyard Bounce. Backyard Bounce is a game of basketball where players are required to throw the ball into the ring using different levels and angles of everyday objects from bowling balls to set squares. The game has 72 levels and each level of the game has multiple solutions which makes it more interesting. It is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch worldwide. My FM launches two new programmes in Ahmedabad My FM has launched two new programmes in Ahmedabad, ‘Aradhana’ and ‘Kajal’. ‘Aradhana’ is based on the collections of a renowned story‐teller, Morari Bapu. His works are inspired by Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas, Rama and Gopigeet, the songs of gopis, etc. ‘Kajal’, on the other hand, is a live and interactive show which will deal with various personal and professional issues of the listeners. Its first show will be based on the kite flying festival of Gujarat, Uttarayan where listeners can participate and share their experiences about the festival. UTV Ignition Games launches ‘Quarrel’ on Xbox Live® Arcade for Xbox 360 UTV Ignition Games, a subsidiary of UTV Software Communications, has launched the popular game, ‘Quarrel’ on Xbox Live® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Quarrel has already been released on iOS devices. This game is a combination of board game strategy and scrabble wordplay. The game requires players to take control of the islands which is split into territories. The game has 12 levels across four different themed environments. It features multiplayer for up to 4 players. Single players can also enjoy the game by competing against nine artificial players. A good set of vocabulary and quick thinking is required to win this game. Hewlett­Packard India designs Internet TV Hewlett‐Packard (HP) India, an established technology company, has created Internet TV which enables people to access internet on their television sets. This simplified application caters to the need of people who are unfamiliar with the traditional computer interface. Majority of the population watch television and bringing internet to them through such a medium would increase the company’s growth prospects. The HP set‐top‐box has to be connected to the television set to access the internet. The product is still to be launched in the market and it awaits a positive response from the masses. Some of the features of this set‐top‐box include Good looker, Task Genie, Web Tuner, Libraries, Contacts and Whiteboard and Pairing with mobile phone. The company brings this new technology at an affordable price without any complication to its usage. Viacom18 launches an English Comedy channel Viacom18, an established entertainment multinational company, has launched an English comedy channel, Comedy Central. With this launch the company has a total number of six channels added to its portfolio. The channel will host 17 shows and five hours of programming. The company is targeting the metro cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Sun18 will be responsible for its distribution on the cable platform. The programmes will be a combination of British comedy, sketch comedy, stand ups and gags. Some of its shows are Daily Show with John Stewart, South Park, and Saturday Night Live. Movies will be aired during the weekends. This channel will be available across analog, digital cable and DTH. Universal Music India partners with the Peninsula Studios Universal Music India has entered a partnership with The Peninsula Studios. The partnership will provide a platform for musicians from across the peninsula to display their talent in various languages. recognized on this platform. The Peninsula Studio is also organizing a program to train the musicians in instruments that is going obsolete. Universal Music India is an established music company which owns the second largest classic bollywood music catalogue and is home to a number of non‐film music. The Peninsula Studio is a content creation initiative with a studio where live performances take place. What’s­On­India launches Television Street Maps What’s‐On‐India has launched a new business vertical, Television Street Maps which will monitor the day‐to‐day changes to TV channel availability and placement across Cable and Satellite households. This service includes customers such as One‐Alliance, MSM Network, UTV Network, Viacom‐18 and more. This system covers more than 700 analogue and digital head ends across 300 towns and cities presently and plans to expand it to more than 1000 head ends over the next 3 months. The company has taken a strategic movement through this launch considering the changes that is expected to take place in the TV business due to digitization that is being introduced by the government. What’s‐On‐India is an online tv channel guide for Indian tv channels, Indian tv schedules, tv programmes, etc. Shri Tara Group launches a Hindi news channel Shri Tara Group has announced the launch of its Hindi news channel, Himachal Aaj Kal. The channel aims to show the reason for the crime and corruption along with the crime that has taken place. The channel will be available on DTH platforms such as Dish TV, Tata Sky, Reliance Big TV, Airtel and Videocon. It will be promoted across radio, electronic mediums, print and through local advertisers. Presently, the channel is being aired on test basis using Disha India’s platform. The company also plans to launch a news channel in four regions of the country. MAA TV launches a Telugu General Entertainment Channel MAA Television Network’s flagship channel, MAA TV has launched a Telugu General Entertainment channel, MAA Gold. The channel will offer a variety of programs such as game shows, cookery shows, comedy shows, lifestyle and animation based content for the kids. Additionally, it will provide a platform to college students to display their talent. The content of the show has been designed to interest the young generation and also encourage family viewing. Kalaignar TV launches a music channel Kalaignar TV, a Chennai based media company has launched a 24 hour Tamil music channel, Murasu TV. The channel will be aired on cable platform presently. The channel targets the age group of 6 to 60 years. Its research explains that there is a demand for old songs and therefore the channel will air songs from the pre‐2000s period considering specific themes such as popular actors, musicians and singers along with the contemporary music. However, the channel does not have any plan to air any reality or concept based show at present. The channel will be promoted across radio, print and outdoor. Although the company might face tough competition from established channels such as Sun Music, Jaya Max, Raj Musix, 7s Music, its thematic approach is expected to draw viewers. IBNLive launches two applications for Facebook Timeline IBNLive, the web arm of Network18 has launched two new applications for Facebook, ‘IBNLive With Friends’ and ‘InHindi’. IBNLive With Friends’ offers a range of personalized news. It helps people to connect to each and share news and headlines on politics, business and finance, sports and entertainment. The stories are accompanied by a link that leads the reader to the complete story that can be viewed on Facebook itself. Friends can share their experience on the news updates through this platform. This is an uninterrupted platform which helps the young generation in gaining knowledge about the current affairs. ‘In Hindi’ is yet another application which offers a wide range of news and entertainment to people in Hindi. It offers articles, interviews, songs, videos and photos. It will help connect people and allow them to share their experiences. This is the first application in Hindi to add to Facebook Timeline and it assures entertainment. Imagine TV set to re­launch Imagine TV is set to re‐launch with a new set of interactive and entertaining programmes. It plans to launch shows such as Gyan Guru, Mi, Aaji Aur Saheb and more. The channel is also strategizing its shows so that the repeats are effective. It also plans to launch certain fictional soaps which interest the household. The company plans to air simple and small shows presently. It has faced a strong competition from Life OK, formally known as Star One and is designing its programmes in a way to interest the viewers and raise its returns. RED FM partners with Uninor to provide radio channels on mobile Uninor, an established mobile operator in India has partnered with RED FM to provide radio channels in various languages. Uninor users can listen to music in their preferred language. A Gujarati in Bangalore can listen to RED FM Ahmedabad or a Bengali in Mumbai can listen to RED FM Kolkata. Users can access 8 RED FM stations at a nominal amount of INR 10 for a week with usage upto 100 minutes. The service will allow Uninor customers to listen to the streams through the RED FM stations of Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Jamshedpur and Ahmedabad. Cable and Broadcast Industry displeased with TRAI’s recommendation Cable and Broadcast industry is displeased with the regulator over the Draft Guidelines for Unified Licensing Regime on TRAI’s website. TRAI could be issuing authority for broadcasting licenses as well which may allow telecom companies and BWA license holders to get involved in broadcasting services according to the broadcasters. TRAI is already working on drawing the detailed conditions of a Unified license and guidelines through an appropriate process. Terms and conditions of the new license will be prepared based on the final guidelines for Unified License and Class License. Presently, the Information and Broadcasting ministry is authorized to allot TV channel licenses and prepare the uplink and downlink rules for broadcasters. TRAI charges INR 200 mn for a national‐level unified license under the new regime which implies that there will be 4 types of licenses in future as against many across the communication sector at present including a broadcasting license. The draft policy does not clarify the future status of the existing 800‐odd TV licenses given by the Information and Broadcasting ministry. Komli Media launches centre for research in online advertising Komli Media, a digital media solutions company has launched a centre for research in online advertising, Komli Labs. This lab will focus on innovation in digital advertising with the help of applied research and big data analytics in areas such as audience measurement, targeting, advertisement verification and traffic quality management. This lab will observe the functioning of a number of teams. The research and development team has been provided with a real time bidding platform ATOM. 90 employees amongst the total 300 at Komli are engaged in research and development. IMAX partners with SPI to install IMAX theatres in India IMAX, an established entertainment technology company has partnered with SPI to install four digital IMAX theatres in the SPI Cinemas complexes across India. This deal will increase the number of IMAX theatres operating in India to 13. It will also help IMAX to consider local release of Bollywood movies. The technology and brand name of IMAX paired with SPI’s contemporary multiplexes will provide a rich experience to the viewers. IMAX’s digital projection system eliminates the need of film prints, increases program flexibility and helps increase the number of movies that are being shown. This system can manage both IMAX and IMAX 3D presentations. SPI is a leading player in the Indian exhibition industry which operates multiplexes. BigFlix and UTV Motion Pictures enters a deal for movie title BigFlix Plus, the online movie on demand service of BigFlix is entering into a partnership with UTV Motion Pictures to offer more than 45 UTV movie titles to Media and Entertainment – Monthly Update


BigFlix Plus subscribers. Movies that are available are from the UTV banner and viewers can watch the movies at their preferred time. Devices such as Tablets, smartphones, connected TVs can be used to watch these movies. Movies such as Wake Up Sid, Fashion, Race and Raajneeti will be available. Pay per view and Subscription Video on Demand allow subscribers to watch movies according to their convenience. UTV Motion Pictures is a motion pictures division of UTV Software Communications Ltd. Its business activities include creative development, marketing, distribution, licensing and production of films across the globe. BigFlix is part of the Reliance Group’s Digital entertainment business which offers a range of movies and television shows.

News Update Expansion Plans

NDTV partners with Dish TV to expand its international presence NDTV has expanded its international presence by launching two new channels, NDTV 24*7 and NDTV Good Times on Dish TV in the United States. Both channels are a part of Dish Network’s South Asian Mega pack. Also, NDTV 24*7 is the first Indian channel to be a part of the international base pack as well. The channels are available in United States, United Kingdom, Canada, the Middle East, Indian subcontinent. NDTV Good Times offers a taste of New India through its programmes. The channel is now dominating the international market which includes United States, Canada. The channel will also be launched in United Kingdom shortly. Viacom18 expands international presence Viacom18, a growing entertainment conglomerate, is expanding its channel ‘COLORS' in Dubai by setting up an office in Dubai to manage sales, marketing and distribution of its channels in the Middle East and African markets. ‘COLORS’ is Viacom18’s flagship brand in the Indian entertainment space. Earlier, the channel was being marketed by its distribution partner ‘Pehla’ in this region. This new office will be the second overseas office, the first being in USA. The rising popularity of this channel has encouraged its proprietors to expand it overseas. UTV looks to expand overseas with UTV Stars UTV Software Communications is planning to expand its operations overseas with the launch of its Bollywood entertainment channel, UTV Stars in UK. A licence has been issued for this launch. The company had also recently launched a Hindi film channel, UMP Movies in UK.
