Union Human Resource Ministry to launch 1,000 education channels In order to improve the overall position of the education sector, the Union Human Resources Development Ministry plans to launch 1,000 education channels. Steps to launch the first 50 channels have already been initiated, with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry being approached for permission. The Department of Space has assured the use of two 36 MHz KU Band transponders in satellite GSAT 8 spacecraft for these channels. The Ministry has also appointed a consultant for setting up the infrastructure for the 50 Direct‐to‐Home channels. Reputed educational institutes will be preparing the format of the show and will also present lectures and educational study materials. The channels are a part of the National Mission of Education through Information and Communication Technology initiative. However, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry might take some time to pass the business plan as the recent guidelines specify that formation of a company is mandatory to launch a channel. The media and entertainment industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in India at present. Consumer spending towards entertainment is also on the rise due to a sustained increase in disposable incomes. The film and entertainment market is experiencing a number of expansions and launches across the country. With technological advancements and competitive marketing strategies the movie industry is increasingly getting more corporatised. Companies are coming up with public issues and raising capital in order to increase its operations. However, the industry is private‐dominated and the government has not taken much initiative to help this sector to grow. The overall film and entertainment industry is observing a rapid growth which will offer a variety of alternatives to consumers for their entertainment.

Inspire Multiplex launches four screen multiplex in Ahmedabad Inspire Multiplex has launched its four screen multiplex, Grand Cinemas in Ahmedabad. The multiplex includes 802 seats and has digital screens with 3D technology. It plans to sell the movie tickets at a price of INR 25. The multiplex have five types of seating arrangements which include Normal, Europe, Elite, Grand Class and Love seats. The company has joined hands with some of the best technologies such as XT Sound, MY MAX and DCI compliant 2KD cinemas to offer a rich movie experience.

The multiplex is also conducting training sessions for the employees to provide superior customer service. The launch will increase the number of Grand Cinemas in India to 2. The company plans to open another 11 by the end of 2012, the next being in Gurgaon. Xpert Media set to launch a video advertising Xpert Media is set to launch a video advertising which may help brands draw lifestyle audience for its lifestyle magazine, Mensxp.com in association with Jivox, an established video advertising company. The video advertising aims to deliver informative advertisements. It will also pave way for in‐banner interactive video and mobile advertisements for its customers. Menxp.com is India’s leading lifestyle website with a number of monthly readers. Abu Dhabi Media partners with Entertainment Network (India) Ltd. to launch Radio Mirchi in UAE Abu Dhabi Media has entered into a partnership with Entertainment Network (India) Ltd. to launch Radio Mirchi in United Arab Emirates (UAE). This will be the first radio station in UAE to offer nationwide coverage with 3 frequencies, 97.3FM Abu Dhabi, 88.8FM Dubai & northern emirates and 95.6FM Al Ain. The partnership is Abu Dhabi Media’s first foray into the South Asian broadcasting sector. Also, it the first international partnership for Entertainment Network (India) Ltd. and the Radio Mirchi brand. The radio station aims to offer a mix of content and talent to its listeners. Radio Mirchi presently operates 32 stations in 14 states of India. ‘Vh1 Radio GAGA’ launched by Vh1 Vh1 has partnered with Hungama Mobile to launch ‘Vh1 Radio GAGA’ on Airtel mobile phones. This new application will allow airtel users to listen to international songs at anytime of the day. It will feature songs from shows such as Vh1 Top 10, Vh1 Hip Hop Hustle, Vh1 Rock Rules and Vh1 Classic. The company plans to extend its presence beyond television and online media. The subscription price is INR 2 per day and browsing rates are INR 3 paise per second. Users can also access the application through a hotline number. Dish TV launches Dish truHD+ Dish TV has launched a new product, Dish truHD+. This product has an unlimited recording capacity and is compatible with USB devices. The company plans to replace the existing DVRs with truHD+ at no added cost. Dish truHD+ priced at INR 2,690, includes the new truHD+ box along with the month Dish truHD Royale Pack. The company is also offering a 4 GB USB drive free of charge. This will spread the concept of plugging an external device to use the recording features. The advertisement, developed by McCann, promotes the company and the product.

Dish TV is currently the third largest DTH player outside the United States. The tagline of the company has varied from ‘Wish Karo, Dish Karo’ to ‘Sabse Zyaada Channels’ to ‘Don’t just see it, Be in it’ to the present ‘Dish Sawaar Hai’. The new product will initially be introduced in tier I and II cities. NDTV Good Times join hands with Geo TV for a food reality show NDTV Good Times has partnered with Geo TV to telecast India’s food reality show, Foodistan in Pakistan. The show will observe a cooking battle between chefs from India and Pakistan. 16 chefs, 8 from each country will participate in this show. The show will include well‐known hosts and an esteemed panel of judges. NDTV Good Times is broadcasted in United States, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Maldives. Also, the contents of NDTV Lifestyle are played on lifestyle channels such as The Wedding TV in United Kingdom and are available on new media platforms such as Big Flix and My Way. Big Flix service launched on Android and iOS devices The movie‐on‐demand service of Big Flix is now available on Android and iOS devices. Consumers can now watch movies and TV shows in HD quality on their Android or Apple device. This application will help users watch their preferred shows and movies while travelling as well. It also gives access to trailers, music videos and short films. This application offers latest movies across devices such as desktops, tablets, smartphones and connected TVs. The monthly subscription of this service is INR 249 month. Reliance Broadcast includes Bloomberg UTV as a part of its distribution portfolio Bloomberg UTV, a reputed business news channel is now a part of the distribution portfolio of Reliance Broadcast Network. This new venture has taken the total number of channels of Reliance Broadcast to six, namely, Big CBS Prime, Big CBS Love, Big CBS Spark, Big Magic, Spark Punjabi and Bloomberg UTV. The channel is also scheduled to launch an action based channel, Big RTL through a joint venture with Germany’s RTL Group. Every channel having a fixed set of audience, the company looks to cover a wide spectrum of audiences. Indian in­taxi advertising network draws in big names of the Indian advertising world The recently launched in‐taxi advertising and entertainment network, Flo is drawing in big names of the Indian advertising industry, McDonald’s, Garnier, Tata Docomo and ET Now being some of them. Flo was launched by En Route Media, a Mumbai based firm. It is an in‐taxi digital out‐of‐home medium which has a sound‐enabled touchscreen display. Neo Sports and MSM Discovery partners to distribute television channels Neo Sports Broadcast and MSM Discovery have entered a partnership for the distribution of television channels, Neo Sports and Neo Cricket under the aegis of TheOneAlliance bouquet. This new partnership will allow TheOneAlliance to air sports events such as Asia Cup (Cricket), UEFA Euro 2012 (Football), French Open (Tennis) and World Series Hockey (Hockey). Along with these events the DLF IPL on Set Max will strengthen the TheOneAlliance bouquet further. Professional Golf Tour of India announces a 3 year partnership with Ten Golf Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) has entered a 3 year partnership with Ten Golf, a soon to be launched sports channel. The deal allows Ten Golf to broadcast all national and international PGTI‐sanctioned tournaments. Initially, the channel will air a weekly show, Inside the PGTI which will show the best golfing action from PGTI events and will also feature golfers on the PGTI circuit. Ten Golf is India’s first golf channel. This channel is a part of the Taj Television Limited which also operates channels such as Ten Sports, Ten Cricket, Ten Action+ and Ten HD. The channels of Taj Television reach million homes across India. Reckitt Benckiser re­launches its business game Reckitt Benckiser has re‐launched PoweRBrandsTM, its business game on Facebook to provide a fresh experience of the online game. The game allows players to live a virtual life of an executive working in Reckitt Benckiser who gradually rises to the position of a Global President. It also tests the key skills of an employee such as innovative thinking, quick decision making, marketing skills, business acumen and the ability to take on challenges. The game targets the age group of 18‐30 and working professionals. The fan page of this new game encourages players to share news and information on game changes and new innovations. Mahuaa Media launches another news channel with Dalet Dalet Digital Media announced that Mahuaa Media is expanding its existing Dalet newsroom system in Noida to launch another 24 hour news channel, Newsline UP, a Hindi Language channel. Dalet’s Media Asset Management framework facilities allow seamless integration with third‐party systems. Mahuaa's news centre has Final Cut Pro editing systems, Omneon MediaGrid and Quantum offline storage with XenData HSM for archive and Vizrt graphics. Dalet also controls video ingest and playout via Omneon MediaDeck servers. This news channel has its own news team, it monitors videos, log metadata, read newswires, manages assignments and has a Final Cut Pro edit suites for sophisticated editing. The tools are simple and task‐specific which makes it easy for Newsline UP to adapt to the system. Star India moves to the digital platform STAR India has introduced Star Content Live, a digital solution. This new initiative will offer a tapeless TV commercial delivery service to its advertisers and business partners. commercials for broadcasting across the Star network. Star has already used this new technique for its content. This service will enable cost and time efficiencies across the value chain. It is a tapeless end‐to‐end workflow that is safe for High and Standard Definition digital advertisement distribution. The company is working with Prime Focus for this new venture. BIG AIMS launches an academy centre in Bengaluru Animation Information & Media School, BIG AIMS has launched an academy in Bengaluru. The academy looks to fill the gap between the present Animation and VFX training methodologies by dealing with the real needs of the industry. It has already setup academies in Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Indore, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. Chief guests Mr. B N Vijayakumar, MLA, Jayanagar and Mr Ramalinga Reddy, MLA, BTM Layout, inaugurated the academy in the presence of Mr Deepak Raju, MD, BIG AIMS, Bengaluru and other eminent personalities from established animation schools and government officials. BIG AIMS, a venture of Reliance Animation, provides education in the field of Animation and VFX. Indian Angel invests in an online gaming company Indian Angel Network has invested ~INR 50 mn in a newly formed online gaming company, Gamiana Digital Entertainment. The company plans to use the invested funds for expanding its customer base, improving the software development for the games and drawing international contracts. Gamiana is a Mumbai based 3 year old gaming company which extends multi‐player games that is supported on all platforms. The games can be downloaded as well as played on Facebook. PVR launches a 4­screen multiplex in Kolkata PVR Cinemas, one of the largest cinema chains in India has launched a multiplex in Kolkata’s Avani Riverside Mall. The multiplex covers a total area of 32,820 square feet and has 4 screens with a total seating capacity of 1,186 seats. It aims to provide outstanding digital movie experience to the consumers. Along with the built‐in facilities the cinema chain is introducing the ‘Grab and Go’ counter. The multiplex was inaugurated by chief guest and film actor, Rahul Bose, joint managing director of PVR, Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, and group president of Avani Riverside Mall, Vimal Goel. This is the first PVR multiplex that has been launched in East India. PVR now has 162 screens in 37 cinemas across 21 cities in India. Scrabble Entertainment plans to bring single screens to the DCI platform Scrabble Entertainment plans to bring the single screens to the digital cinema initiative platform (DCI) platform. It looks to converting all the multiplex screens to DCI compliant digital screens. This conversion will allow exhibitors to present alternate and 3D content. Microsoft India appoints Ybrant Digital for digital advertising Microsoft Corporation India has appointed Ybrant Digital as its advertising sales house. Microsoft is set to expand its business activities in cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune and Goa. Ybrant will allow companies to advertise with premium media properties owned by Microsoft. Ybrant will help the company earn maximum return on investment on the ad spend by its advertisers. BJP to launch an internet TV channel Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to launch an internet TV channel, Yuva. This channel aims to draw the attention of the young generation. It will showcase programmes and speeches of the party members. Speeches of eminent government officials will also be broadcasted. The programmes will be available in yuva4india website as well. 94.3 MY FM organise Flash Mob to promote their station 94.3 MY FM organised Flash Mobs in Chandigarh, Jaipur, Bhopal, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Amritsar, Bilaspur, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Jalandhar, Jodhpur, Kota, Raipur, Surat and Udaipur. RJs participated in the activities that were conducted. The event took place at prime locations during peak hours. It was covered by many TV channels and publications. Videos and pictures of this event are available over the internet. UMP Movies now available on Freesat UMP Movies, Freesat’s first bollywood movie channel is now available on Freesat Channel 308. This 24 hour Hindi movie channel will also carry English subtitles for the convenience of its viewers. It has a library of more than 400 movie titles. UTV is pleased to partner with Freesat for this venture. BIG RTL partners with Reliance Digital TV to distribute channels BIG RTL has entered into a partnership with Reliance Digital TV BIG TV. As a part of the deal BIG TV will distribute an action entertainment channel and a channel airing reality shows from the BIG RTL accumulation. The partnership aims to offer some of the finest international contents to the subscribers of Reliance Digital TV. The Reliance Broadcast Network is a multimedia entertainment conglomerate. The company has recently conducted a 'Choose Your Set‐Top‐Box Wisely' campaign, which is designed to make the consumers aware of the set top boxes and also help the operators build their brand equity. 9XM Media to launch another music channel 9XM Media Group is set to launch another music channel, 9XM Jalwa. The channel targets the age group of 25 and above. It plans to air timeless music which includes contemporary as well as classic numbers. Additionally, the channel will air short format shows for its viewers, some of them being Kassette Kahaniyan, and Bolly Brands, etc. Raj TV to re­launch two of its channels Raj Television Network, a South Indian satellite television network is planning to re ‐ It also plans to launch a Kannada news channel soon. The company is re‐structuring the contents and format of the shows that are aired. It plans to extend the primetime slots by adding more reality shows. Raj TV is available on the DTH platform in Tamil Nadu and is planning to get on the DTH platform in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka soon. Times of India Group to launch BoxTV.com service The group’s director of AdTech India announced that the Times of India Group is set to launch a new service, BoxTV.com. This new service will allow users to watch the latest movies and television shows online. AdTech India plans to introduce new products under the entertainment segment soon. The Times Group is also planning to enhance the web viewing experience of the upcoming Indian Premier League. Times Group is one of the largest media conglomerate in India and the publisher of the Economic Times. Vijay TV partners with Big Synergy to host a show Vijay TV has partnered with Big Synergy, the television production arm of Reliance MediaWorks to host the Tamil version of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ The show will be an addition to the channel’s PT programming. The show will be hosted by a popular Tamil actor. The format of the show requires the participants to answer the set questions correctly to win a sum of INR 10 mn. Viewers will also be able to win prizes by answering questions during the show. The channel has been observing high retail interest which has triggered a competition between national and retail clients for the limited advertising space. Associated Broadcasting company plans to expand, looks for investors Associated Broadcasting Company (ABCL) plans to raise a fund of INR 4 bn to launch Tamil news channel in Chennai and Oriya and Hindi news channel in National Capital Region (NCR). The company plans to increase the number of channels operating under it to nine. It is also looking forward to selling 14.5% stake to private equity fund Saif III Mauritius Company. Presently, ABCL operates six channels which include TV9 AP, TV1, TV9 Karnataka, News9 English, TV9 Gujarat and TV9 Mumbai. FM III to roll out by mid 2012 FM Phase III to be introduced in the country from mid 2012. This would add another 800 plus FM radio stations to the existing 240 FM stations. The statutory aspects have been in process and the TRAI recommendations have been considered. A total of 200 Indian cities would experience the FM III phase. India sets a foreign direct investment of 74% India has set a foreign investment limit of 74% for its DTH, IPTV, mobile TV and digital cable sector. However, the level for non‐digital cable TV remains at 49%. Since digitization requires huge investments, the information and broadcast ministry expects greater capital flows from the raised FDI levels. Madhouse launches operations in India China’s mobile ad network, Madhouse launched its operations in India. The company plans to offer customized mobile marketing solutions and it wishes to address this by extending unique and innovative services. Madhouse India wants to exploit the opportunity of using mobile as a mass media device. It aims to provide services across the operating systems with special focus on geography, user demographics, and psychographics. The company is an established mobile ad network and mobile marketing solutions provider in China and has clients such as HP, Intel, Coke, Unilever, etc.

News Update Expansion Plans

9XM expands its international presence 9XM Media Group has expanded its international presence by launching its music channel, 9XM in the United Kingdom. The format of the show remains similar with some additions to the number of shows being aired. The channel plans to expand across the globe. It already has some launches in line for the domestic market. Some of its recent launches were 9X Tashan and 9X Jhakaas. BIG CBS to expand its geographic presence BIG CBS Networks is set to expand its presence into the SAARC region. The company has already put its first step in Sri Lanka. It will offer three prime channels in Sri Lanka, namely, BIG CBS Prime, BIG CBS Love and BIG CBS Spark. Shows such as Hawaii Five‐0, NCIS, Survivor, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Oprah Winfrey Show and Entertainment Tonight will be aired. It will be available across cable platforms. The company is also looking forward to translating the content of the channels in regional languages for their consumers. The company gradually plans to expand its presence in countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The three channels will initially be launched on a fixed licensee fee model and will be distributed with the cable operator, Lanka Broadcast Network.
