Both the precious metals, gold and silver tumbled in the national capital today owing to slackened demand at prevailing higher levels amid a weak global trend. While MCX gold plunged by Rs 220 to Rs 27,650 per 10 gm, silver fell by Rs 900 to Rs 45,300 per kg on reduced offtake by jewellers and industrial units. Besides, some investors diverting their funds from weakening bullion to rising equity markets, also had negative impact on the precious metal. Gold in Singapore, which normally set price trend on the domestic front, fell by 0.7 per cent to USD 1,459.60 an ounce and silver by 1.5 per cent to USD 23.65 an ounce. On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity plunged by Rs 220 each to Rs 27,650 and Rs 27,450 per 10 gm, respectively. The yellow metal had gained Rs 120 yesterday. Sovereign followed suit and fell by Rs 200 to Rs 24,000 per piece of eight gram. Similarly, MCX silver ready dropped by Rs 900 to Rs 45,300 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 685 to Rs 44,630 per kg. The white metal had gained Rs 200 in the previous session. However, silver coins continued be asked around previous level of Rs 75,0000 for buying and Rs 76,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Crude oil futures prices rose by over 1 per cent to Rs 5,195 per barrel today as speculators engaged in creating positions, driven by a firming trend in Asia after strong US jobs report. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for delivery in May gained Rs 52, or 1.01 per cent, to Rs 5,195 per barrel, with a business turnover of 33,307 lots. Likewise, the oil for June delivery also moved up by Rs 51, or 0.99 per cent, to Rs 5,223 per barrel in 3,886 lots. Analysts said the rise in crude oil futures on account of a firming trend in Asia after an upbeat US jobs report bolstered confidence that the economy is on track. Meanwhile, crude oil for June delivery advanced by 91 cents to USD 96.52 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Cardamom prices rose by Rs 2.70 to Rs 758.70 per kg in futures trade on Tuesday as speculators indulged in creating fresh positions, supported by a rise in demand in the spot market against restricted arrivals from producing belts. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, cardamom for delivery in May rose by Rs 2.70, or 0.36 per cent, to Rs 758.70 per kg in business turnover of 1147 lots. In restricted activity, pepper prices gained 0.82 per cent to Rs 36,350 per quintal in futures trading on Tuesday as speculators created fresh positions driven by restricted supplies from Kerala amid depleting stocks. At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), pepper for delivery in May spurted by Rs 295, or 0.82 per cent, to Rs 36,350 per quintal with an open interest of 428 lots. Turmeric fell by Rs 146 to Rs 6,032 per quintal in futures market on Tuesday after participants trimmed their positions weighed by weak exports and increased supplies. At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, turmeric for the most-active June delivery contracts fell by Rs 146, or 2.36 per cent, to Rs 6,032 per quintal with an open interest of 29,145 lots. Likewise, the spice for delivery in May shed Rs 92, or 1.52 per cent, to Rs 5,980 per quintal in 2,225 lots.
