Gold prices took a dramatic U-turn on Monday, reversing early gains to drop to a two-year trough after bullion futures fell on fears about central bank sales and holdings on global exchange-traded funds sank to their lowest in more than a year. A dip below the psychological $1,500 an ounce level initially sparked bargain hunting, but stoploss selling took over after oil futures slipped and as investors bet the US Federal Reserve would soon end its bullion-friendly bond buying programme. MCX Gold hit an intraday high at $1,495.16 an ounce, but then plunged to $1,427.14, its lowest since April 2011. It stood at $1,441.69 by 0335 GMT, down $36.66, and the metal has slipped around 14 per cent so far this year, after rising for the last 12 years. US futures for June delivery extended losses to fall more than 5 per cent as Tokyo gold futures tumbled around 8 per cent, marking Japanese futures biggest daily fall since September 2011. Other precious metals were also hit by heavy selling, with mcx silver falling to its lowest since November 2010, platinum at its weakest since August last year, and palladium hitting a threemonth low. Investors cut exposure to mcx gold, with total holdings at the world's major bullion goldbacked exchange-traded-funds falling to their lowest since early 2012.

Crude oil futures prices today fell by 1.97 per cent to Rs 4,877 per barrel after speculators reduced exposures amid a weakening trend in the Asian trade. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for delivery in April fell by Rs 98 or 1.97 per cent, to Rs 4,877 per barrel in 8,406 lots. Similarly, the oil for May delivery moved down by Rs 97, or 1.93 per cent, to Rs 4,921 per barrel in 7,392 lots. The trading sentiment remained weak at futures trade as crude oil prices declined in Asian trade after China's economic growth for the first quarter came in below expectations, analysts said. Meanwhile, crude oil for May delivery shed 80 cents to $ 90.49 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Coriander prices rose by 2.52 per cent to Rs 7,522 per quintal in futures trade today as speculators created positions, driven by pick-up in spot market demand. The sentiment further improved as a result of limited stocks position on account of restricted arrivals from major growing areas. At the National Commodity and Derivative Exchange, coriander for April delivery rose by Rs 185, or 2.52 per cent to Rs 7,522 per quintal, with an open interest of 2,060 lots. Similarly, the spice for delivery in May increased by Rs 184, or 2.47 per cent, to Rs 7,626 per quintal, with open interest of 34,760 lots. Turmeric futures hit a contract high on Monday, tracking bullish cues from the spot market where demand from buyers was good while estimates of lower output also aided the upside. The most-active turmeric contract for May delivery was 3.77 per cent higher at 7,318 rupees per 100 kg on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) at 0931 GMT. It hit a contract high of 7,328 rupees earlier in the day.
