Older Persons Residential Care Home Environments: Common Lane, Kenilworth
reShaped
Carried out by reShaped Landscape Architecture
Client: Chalfont Design / Pozzoni Architects Brief Description of Project: Making the most of a long narrow site and taking advantage of an adjacent watercourse and woodland this scheme will provide a much needed 84 bed care facility for people with dementia and will be owned and operated by WCS Care Group. An emphasis on access to external space and a dementia specific landscape design ensure the external space is as important as the internal space. Whilst there have been a series of design iterations, the basic principles and setting out of accommodation on the site has evolved in line with the first initial design response. Critical items that have been addressed through the design process are: - Ensuring the building design creates a domestic environment, where people feel at home - Maintaining visibility from Common Lane to the main entrance - Provision of safe, secure and stimulating gardens and outdoor spaces.

Older Persons Mental Health Environments: Great Oaks Refurbishment, Scunthorpe
reShaped
Carried out by reShaped Landscape Architecture
Client: Nigel Spaven, Capital Projects Manger, RDASH Brief Description of Project: Refurbishment of Older Persons hospital in Scunthorpe. This scheme was designed to humanise entranceways, reduce dominance of car parking and roadways, provide privacy to the PICU and create attractive seasonal planting schemes. Use of existing space and existing hard surfaced areas were maximized. Attractive new gardens were developed with minimal expense within areas that had previously been wide maintenance paths. All waste materials were reused to re-profile unattractive water tank mounds at the site boundary and provide drainage to planting beds. The scheme is very popular with staff and service users and further funds have been allocated to the project in order to improve the Older Person’s entrance. Project Completion: March 2013

Care and attention was taken to ensure that activity, diversity and interest were provided for, whilst avoiding potential use of plants and structures for self harm or escape. Budgets were maximized throughout the life of the scheme and funds prioritized to elements that would add beauty, experience as well as functionality to the environment. Carried out by Elaine whilst employed by Camlin Lonsdale 2010-2011
Client: Nigel Spaven, Capital Projects Manger, RDASH Brief Description of Project: Refurbishment of external environments within an existing Adult Acute mental health hospital and integration of new PICU unit. The design integrated existing and proposed building levels, removing existing ramps and steps to create an attractive, accessible environment. Wander paths took advantage of existing site contours, providing service users with space and solitude (within view of staff) as well as opportunities to interact with others. Privacy planting adjacent to the bedroom windows was sensitively integrated into the landscape in order to discourage use of this area. Care and attention was taken to ensure that activity, diversity and interest were provided for, whilst avoiding potential use of plants and structures for self harm or escape. I have received very positive feedback from the service users while on site visits, with some eager to show me their favorite plant and others stating that it made them feel calm and like they were at home. Project Completion: July 2011 Landscape Budget: ÂŁ500,000 BREEAM: Very Good

This was a thoroughly worthwhile project that has enhanced my understanding of the needs of people with dementia and learning difficulties and the emotional importance of being able to open a window and walk outside.
