penallta colliery Penallta Colliery stood at the heart of the Rhymney Valley community for over one hundred years. Generations of hard-working local men were employed at Penallta and, when it was sadly closed in 1991, the future of this important site was uncertain. Penallta Colliery was once South Wales’ most profitable long life pits, regularly producing steam coal of the highest quality. No expense was spared in equipping the colliery with the most advanced equipment, housing them within architecturally impressive buildings.

These same buildings, with their glorious arches and period tiles will now once again be at the heart of the community, providing many homes of great quality and beauty. The Bath House will be the first phase of this fantastic restoration project to bring the site back to its former glory, creating a new sense of community around this site which has been missing since it sadly closed for business in 1991. The Baths at Penallta were built in 1938 by the Miners’ Welfare Committee, and said at the time to be ‘probably the finest and biggest pithead baths in the country’. 9
