M I D LANDS ENGI NE The Midlands Engine is a coalition of Councils, Combined Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEP), Universities and businesses across the region, actively working with Government to build a collective identity, to enable us to present the Midlands as a competitive and compelling offer that is attractive at home and overseas. Home to over 10 million people and 800,000 large and small businesses, the Midlands has huge potential and the Partnership is focused on its global success – and this in turn will deliver an enhanced quality of life for our citizens and communities.
The Vision for Growth sets out over five priority areas of focus to ensure the Midlands drives the UK economy: • Connecting the Midlands through maximising new technologies to deliver a radical transformation of the Midlands transport network. • Tackling the mismatch between business skills needs and the skill levels of Midlands residents. • Growing International Trade and Investment in existing and new markets. • Increasing Innovation and Enterprise, creating an environment where our science and innovation strengths can be maximised. • And, Shaping Great Places by promoting the Midlands as a great place to live, visit, learn and work.

THE HS2 EFFECT
Birmingham International Airport located 7 miles southeast of Birmingham city centre.
Situated at the heart of the UK’s motorway and rail network, half the UK’s population lies within two hours and 90% within a four-hour travel time of the region.
When HS2 starts running in 2026, Birmingham will effectively become a London commuter town overnight as journey times are cut in half. The idea of affordable living in Birmingham with a commute to Euston that takes less than 50 minutes will likely be highly attractive for many professionals and families currently living in London, further increasing the demand for residential property. As the HS2 stretches on to the North-West, Birmingham could quickly become the central transport hub of the UK.
3rd Largest Airport in UK Flying to 80 destinations 13,000,000 passengers per annum The airport offers both domestic flights within the UK and international flights to destinations in Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, North America and the Caribbean. Birmingham Airport is an operating base for Flybe, Jet2.com, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines and TUI Airways.
£1.3 billion was invested in road, rail and air networks in 2015 making our hub even more efficient. Connected to over 400 million people across Europe, further planned transport infrastructure projects for high-speed rail, road and aviation will ensure the city’s connections remain world-class
T H E H U B , BI RM I NGHAM The Interchange is centrally located within the new £4Bn regeneration project led by the UK Government know as ’The Hub’. The Hub is home to a number of key stakeholders, including world-class economic assets such as the NEC, Birmingham Airport, Jaguar Land Rover and Birmingham Business Park, as well as the 340 acre Arden Cross development site, which will host the HS2 Interchange Station, as well as business, leisure and residential uses. It is also at the centre of the UK’s transport networks, placing 75% of the UK’s population within a three-hour drive time. The UGC will bring together the aspirations of stakeholders within the area to create a unified framework for growth and development within The Hub. Leveraging the unique opportunity of location and assets within a central geography, The Hub is one of the most exciting and accessible development growth projects in Europe: HS2 Interchange Station Arden Cross creating 22,000 new jobs by 2026 Birmingham Business Park 8,000 employees Birmingham International Station expansion plan Jaguar Land Rover UK’s largest car maker Birmingham Airport has 9 Million passengers flying to 80 destinations annually Birmingham N.E.C - U.K’s largest exhibition centre attracting 6 million visitors per year over 500 exhibitions
