Publishers’ Note A

s a new resident or visitor to Jacksonville, we hope you will enjoy this copy of Historic Life, our annual Neighbors & Newcomers Guide to the historic districts, and find it helpful as you settle in. As we have done for the past two years, our goal is to continue to provide a resource for both individuals and families to explore the time-honored, historic neighborhoods of Riverside, Avondale, Ortega, Murray Hill, San Marco, St. Nicholas and San Jose. With this third edition, we have looked to expand on some of the listings within the sections as well as give readers insight into a variety of unique architecture within our historic neighborhoods. If you have recently moved to one of our riverfront communities, you should receive our monthly publication, The Resident, in your mailbox. Two separate editions, each tailored specifically for the neighborhoods on each side of the river, are niche-focused, hyperlocal, and mailed directly to 25,000 residences, with over 5,000 copies distributed to local businesses and other points of interest throughout our areas. If you have not yet settled here, live at a distance, or just seek a local connection, we invite you to visit www.residentnews.net and read both editions of our virtual issue every month. In addition to our newspapers and Historic Life, we also publish North Florida’s premier charity magazine titled, Circles-Social Datebook and Charity Register, published annually in November. Within the pages of Circles, you will find stories about many of the generous residents that live within our neighborhoods, as well as important information about nonprofit groups, volunteer opportunities, social events and galas that benefit those in need throughout our region. This year, The Resident Community News Group is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It is our hope that you will look to all our publications as invaluable resources as you make the transition into our historic communities. We also hope you will assist us in celebrating our decade of service to community news and information by supporting those who advertise within the pages of our publications.

LAZY, MISUNDERSTOOD

ST. JOHNS RIVER HAS POWERFUL IMPACT ON COMMUNITY

ne of the things that makes our historic neighborhoods so special is their proximity to the St. Johns River and the many tributaries that wind their way through our communities. Despite being such a prominent feature and constant presence in our lives, the river is not as well-known or understood as one might think. In fact, the river is often misunderstood. I grew up in Jacksonville believing the urban myth that only a handful of rivers in the world flow north, including the St. Johns. It was not until I was hired by St. Johns Riverkeeper that I realized that this is not true. There are actually hundreds that also flow north. While this is still an uncommon feature, what really sets the St. Johns apart from others is how slow it flows. The St. Johns only falls about 27 feet, or an inch a mile, over its 310-mile journey to

D I R E C T O R,

S T.

"The St. Johns is the only river in Florida and one of only 14 rivers in the entire United States federally-designated as an American Heritage River." the sea. As a result, it has been referred to as one of the “laziest” rivers in the world. In addition, we live in the estuary portion of the St. Johns, so the river can actually reverse flow at times due to the

J O H N S

tidal influences of the ocean. The downside is that our river doesn’t flush efficiently, so pollutants that are dumped into its waters remain for quite some time. The upside is that we have the benefit of both freshwater and saltwater species of fish and wildlife. You may be just as likely in many parts of the river to see a manatee as a bottlenose dolphin! Many people, even longtime residents, may also not be aware of the tremendous accolades bestowed upon our river. For instance, the St. Johns is the only river in Florida and one of only 14 rivers in the entire United States federally-designated as an American Heritage River. The St. Johns was awarded such an esteemed designation because of the tremendous historical, cultural, recreational, ecological, and economic benefits that it has provided to Florida and its citizens for generations. More recently, the America’s Great Waters

“Expect The Best”

Missie Sarra LePrell Selling “Lifestyles” Not Just “Houses” Gated Community & Waterfront Expert Multi-Million Dollar Producer Broker Associate, GRI Coalition named the St. Johns to its list of our country’s Great Waters. One of the reasons the river is so special is due to its rich history. The river has even been referred to as “America’s First River,” because it was the first river to be explored by Europeans in the New World. The French actually established Ft. Caroline on the river in 1564 – 43 years before the first English settlement in Jamestown! The St. Johns provides other economic and ecological benefits, as well. A 2015 University of Florida study concluded that the lower section of the river alone (Welaka to the Atlantic) annually provides billions of dollars in economic impact and ecosystem services for our region. St. Johns River wetlands result in almost $3 billion in savings for flood prevention and provide an economic value for nitrogen and phosphorus removal that exceeds $405 million a year.

Riverfront properties in the four counties studied increased in value $944 million due solely to river frontage, while tributary frontage properties increased $117 million. Even homes in close proximity to the river benefit, with an increased value of $837 million. I haven’t even touched on the numerous recreational, tourism, aesthetic or intangible benefits provided by the river, but hopefully the picture is clear – this is one great body of water and we are better off because of it. So, take the time to learn more about the St. Johns, including the pollution problems that threaten its future, and make an effort to get out there to experience and explore the river. We can’t afford to take it for granted, and we must do everything we can to ensure it continues to sustain our community for generations to come.

n an alternate version of the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy clicked her red heels together, shut her eyes and chanted, “There’s no place like home!” little did she know she would leave Oz and Kansas behind for Jacksonville’s eclectic historic neighborhoods. Dorothy and her Oz entourage would feel right at home in 5 Points, known for its unusual and quirky shops, while Aunt Em and Uncle Henry might give up the farm to make their residence across the river in San Marco, where Italian Renaissance reigns. One of the most pleasantly surprising aspects about the Historic Districts is their architectural diversity. Many of the grand old homes are history-rich, while some of the new homes built in the past year or two are painstakingly true to the heritage of the community. Whether you land on the Northbank or the Southbank, you’re sure to find a home style and a neighborhood that fits you – just like Dorothy’s red shoes – perfectly!

After Jacksonville’s Great Fire of 1901, Riverside quickly became popular as a showcase for a variety of architectural styles, among them revivals of many European designs, including the popular Greek, Gothic, Mediterranean, Tudor and Victorian. However, other lesser-known forms lend their unique features to Riverside’s eclectic architectural landscape.

Built almost immediately after the Great Fire, a Shingle and Queen Anne blended-style home at 1521 Riverside Avenue was one of more than 50 large-scale homes on what was called “The Row” between Edison Avenue and Margaret Street. Now known as the Riverdale Inn, the mansion is just one of two left from The Row. The other “Row” house is home to North Florida Dermatology Associates. Another popular residential design in early Riverside came from the Prairie School of Architecture, and none exemplifies the style better than 2821 Riverside Avenue. Built in 1913 by an architect unknown, yet rumored to have been Henry Klutho, this classic Prairie-style domicile once served as an osteopathic hospital. It is now home,

Marketed as a place where “well-to-do” people would reside, Avondale quickly became popular after construction began in 1920. Nearly 200 homes were built in the first two years of development, mostly in the Mediterranean Revival style, such as two built for members of the Stockton family on Avondale Circle. Both Stockton homes are characteristic of the Spanish/Italian flavor of many homes in post-World War I Avondale. The homes were designed by architects Greeley & Benjamin and built in 1922, one for Avondale developer Telfair Stockton and the other for his son, James, who ran the various Stockton real estate and development companies after Telfair’s death in 1932. In contrast to the proliferation of Mediterranean Revival-style homes in Avondale, the Edward W. Lane residence (then later known as the Lane-Tower Mansion) was built in the Tudor Revival style in 1928, just prior to the Stock Market Crash of 1929. founder of the Venetia neighborhood and named his home after the row of cedar trees which lined the entrance to his front door. Although not built directly on the riverfront to avoid wind, the C.C. Bettes mansion on Ortega Boulevard has a direct view of the St. Johns River from its 2.5-acre lawn. Almost on the eve of its centennial birthday, the plantation home caught fire while undergoing renovations to restore it to its original 1909 Colonial Revival grandeur. The two-story home first built for Bettes, a pharmacist and partner in the John N.C. Stockton Development Company, has since been completely restored. Nearby Bettes Park was named for the original owner of the home, whose 24-hour Bay Street pharmacy in downtown Jacksonville included a 24-foot soda fountain.

Considered one of Jacksonville’s wealthiest neighborhoods, Ortega has a quaint, small-town feel with magnificent views of the St. John’s River and downtown Jacksonville. Its architecture is varied, drawing from the Mediterranean and Tudor Revival styles, but includes Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes, as well as bungalows and more modern residential forms. Among the riverfront mansions you’ll find Los Cedros (The Cedars), built in 19241925 by Palm Beach architect Marion Sims Wyeth, famous for designing during the same period Mar-a-Lago, the mansion currently owned by President Donald Trump. Although early growth in Murray Hill was attributed to the 1920s “Great Florida Land Boom,” some of the area’s several dozen sites deemed to be potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places were built before and after the Roaring Twenties. According to an intensive architectural survey taken in 2006, 1,111 residential and commercial structures were documented with dates of construction between 1895 and 1958. These include simple brick oneand two-part commercial block buildings and early-20th century service stations within the commercial district as well as modest English Tudor cottages, basic bungalows, ornate Craftsman homes, and Minimal Traditional homes within the residential areas. Among the potential historic sites are a 1918 Sears catalog kit house – one of only three known in Jacksonville, and a 1900 Craftsman home. The others are homes built between 1911 and 1949 and include bungalows, Craftsman, Art Deco or masonry vernacular structures. In 1925 the majority of construction was done by speculative builders, so there were few architects involved. Two listed

on building permits include C.B. Jones and Henrietta Cuttino Dozier, the first female architect in Atlanta and then in Jacksonville. She was the third woman to become a member of the American Institute of Architects in the early 1900s. Six of the homes along French Street were designed by Dozier.

Did you know? • Murray Hill was created as a working-class suburb to accommodate a growing railroad and port labor pool in 1906 when the Murray Hill Land Company platted the area with a vision of paved avenues and streetcar access. • The average cost to build a home in 1925 in Murray Hill was $4,466.

One of only three known Sears kit homes in Jacksonville was built in 1918 on Kerle Street.

The second oldest home in Murray Hill, on Wolfe Street, was built in 1901.

• Even in 1925, Murray Hill was still largely rural in nature, and an ordinance was approved to levy fines against cattle owners whose stock was left to roam at large within the city.

Unlike many of Jacksonville’s other historic districts, there aren’t many structures in San Marco built prior to the early 1920s. San Marco, originally incorporated as South Jacksonville, was created from the start by developer Telfair Stockton with an upscale Italian Renaissance Revival theme in mind. This historic district’s most popular feature is San Marco Square, which set the theme for the neighborhood’s Italian Renaissance history in the late 1920s. Even neighborhoods south of San Marco proper picked up on the Mediterranean theme, with street

names in Granada and Miramar sporting Spanish names. Part of the building boom in San Marco included a housing subdivision called Villa Alexandria, plotted in 1929. There you’ll find the two Swisher family estates, designed by architects Marsh & Saxelbye. The cigar magnates, father John and son Carl, had their Mediterranean Revival style homes erected on what was once the site of Villa Alexandria, an estate which belonged to railroad tycoon Alexander and Martha Reed Mitchell from 1872 to 1902.

Both of the elaborate homes on River Road were host to large and extravagant parties during the Depression. Nestled between Marco Lake and the St. Johns River is another Mediterranean Revival style residence built in 1928 for Dr. Lee E. Bransford, Sr. and designed by St. Nicholas architect George O. Holmes. Bransford’s son, Lee Jr., was an eye doctor and lived in the home until his death in 2012. Father and son were both members of the Duval County Medical Society when it celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1953.

SAN MARCO PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Did you know?

The San Marco Preservation Society was formed in 1975 as a nonprofit to protect the integrity of the San Marco residential neighborhood and to enhance the revitalization of the business district. The group is charged with keeping the charm and character of San Marco intact. The group oversees San Marco Preservation Hall, a local landmark originally built in 1888 as St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, located at 652 Atlantic Boulevard. The space is leased for weddings, parties and meetings. Other society activities include representing San Marco’s interests to city government, participating in zoning and government action issues, maintaining and enhancing area parks and recreation facilities, and coordinating family and community events. The organization’s business office is located in the former South Jacksonville City Hall at 1468 Hendricks Ave. and can be reached at (904) 396-0081 or visit www.smpsjax.com.

• Funds to commission the Lions Fountain in San Marco Square were donated by the families of Ron Nemeyer, James and Benita Boyd, Tine Wayne Davis and Letha Wilton Davis, for whom the fountain was dedicated. The sculpture was designed by Angela Schifanella and Alan Wilson, and created by Hugh Nicholson.

Among the mansions which once dotted the south bank of the St. Johns River from St. Nicholas to Oak Haven, several can be found in the Palmer Terrace neighborhood, including a riverfront residence built in 1886 in a blend of the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles of architecture. The two-story home at 1117 Palmer Terrace features eight fireplaces and a music room. In nearby Empire Point, a late Victorianera Queen Anne mansion named Marabanong was built by Thomas Basnett in 1876. Basnett, a noted astronomer from England, married Eliza Wilbur, an internationally known scientist from New York, and they settled in Empire Point in 1880. The 21-room mansion once served as a “health spa” in the early 1900s, and at one point the George W. Trout family (relatives who inherited the property) maintained a zoo on the estate. Bought by a lawyer and his wife, a fine artist, in the early 1990s, the mansion has undergone two decades of restoration and renovation, and was accepted to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Did you know? • Fort San Nicholas, which also protected the river crossing called Cow Ford, stood on what is now the Bishop Kenny High School athletic field area. • Empire Point was part of the original land grant to Reuben Hogans in 1808 and is named for a sawmill which operated prior to the Civil War.

The San Jose Country Club, upper left, and these three private homes share the same Mediterranean Revival style of architecture prevalent in the 1920s.

Did you know? • The San Jose Hotel, on the National Register of Historic Places, is a 125-room, 1925-era Spanish-style structure which became part of The Bolles School campus in 1933. • San Jose Estates’ original Administration Building is now part of the San Jose Episcopal Church and Day School, and at one time hosted San Jose Estate’s executive offices, a casino, and a gas station.

EPPING FOREST PHOTO COURTESY OF THE WAYNE WOOD COLLECTION

The San Jose community developed in fits and starts, first brainstormed in 1914, then put on the back burner until after World War I. San Jose Estates was reborn in 1925 as a planned community to include hotels, a country club, yacht club, parks, schools and residences. However, the 1929 stock market crash, the Depression and then World War II slowed development again with completion of only about 30 of the anticipated thousands of homes to be built in the area. During the initial period of stops and starts, Epping Forest, the elaborate mansion designed by architects Mulford Marsh and Harold Saxelbye, was built in 1927 for Alfred I. duPont and his wife, Jessie Ball duPont. Named for an English forest that was home to an ancestor of Mrs. duPont, Epping Forest covered more than 60 acres with one mile of waterfront. Designed in the Mediterranean Revival style, its three-story tower at the main entrance was a focal point for visitors who enjoyed accommodations in the guest house or the main house. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Epping Forest made the switch from residential to commercial in 1984 when it was purchased by the president of Gate Petroleum Company and converted into a yacht club. Not too far down the road, the San Jose Country Club was also built in the Mediterranean Revival style in 1925 and was operated by the duPont Estate for nearly 20 years as a semi-private club for guests of the San Jose Hotel. Part of Jacksonville’s urban core, the historic district of Springfield has a significant number of historic structures, many erected in the late 1800s. The architectural style then was primarily Queen Anne and Colonial Revival, but after the Great Fire of 1901, Henry John Klutho introduced the avant garde Prairie style, experimenting with the design on his own home. Klutho’s home, first located at 2018 Main Street, is thought to be the first Prairie-style house in Florida. Built in 1909, it was host to political, financial and motion picture moguls and stars before the movie industry declined in Jacksonville. The house was moved to 30 West 9th Street in 1925, then

converted into a duplex rental unit after alterations were made, including a Spanishstyle arch. The home has since been restored to Klutho’s original design. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Less than a mile south of Klutho’s home is another historic building dating back to 1901, after the Great Fire. The architect of the Barnett Bank Building standing at that time, Leon Beaver of Knoxville, Tennessee, was commissioned to build a two-story Colonial Revival home by William B. Barnett, the bank’s founder. With few exceptions, the house has remained unchanged and was sold by the Barnett family in 1941 to Henry Klutho residence, 1909

SPRINGFIELD PRESERVATION AND REVITALIZATION Springfield Preservation and Revitalization (SPAR) was established in 1974 to facilitate positive change in the historic district, around five themes: Preservation — The Design and Review Committee provides expert opinions to residents, developers and city officials alike on aesthetic design issues in the historic district, which help preserve the neighborhood’s unique character. The annual Home Tour showcases the neighborhood’s eclectic nature and encourages new restorations in the community. Quality-of-Life — The Block Captain program coordinates with residents and volunteers to tackle Neighborhood Clean-up projects, Neighborhood Watch, and works closely with local law enforcement. Commercial Revitalization — SPAR, in partnership with the Springfield Area Merchants and Business Association (SAMBA), supports existing businesses and encourages new business. Now a Spar affiliate, SAMBA helps coordinate the Main Street Cruise, and guides those interested in setting up shop in Springfield. Civic Advocacy — Communication with elected representatives, state and federal agencies, and the City of Jacksonville is essential to ensure effective representation in issues impacting the neighborhood. Connecting — Through an e-newsletter, email updates, website, and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, SPAR informs and connects residents with local happenings and each other. Uncommon to our core At San Jose Episcopal Day School, educating the whole child—mind, body and spirit—is at the core of our mission. Rather than teach to a test, we assess student learning at the beginning of the year, then use that information to create individualized instruction for our students. With the flexibility of our hybrid curriculum, small class sizes, and greater classroom autonomy, our teachers are able to meet each student’s unique needs and help them discover their passion for learning. Come see for yourself why an education at San Jose Episcopal Day School is an investment in a brighter future.

Houses of Worship: Jacksonville’s architectural gems More than one of Jacksonville’s distinguished houses of worship still reside in edifices that date back to the 1800s, having survived great challenges, such as the Civil War and the Great Fire of 1901. However, whether a congregation calls a historic or ornate architectural gem home, or worships in a more modest and modern religious structure, its traditions and community outreach cause it to remain a special part of Jacksonville.

Jacksonville’s park system – 80,000 acres of green space Jacksonville is not only the largest city in the United States land-wise, but also boasts the largest urban park system in the nation. Within its city limits lie more than 80,000 acres of green-space with more than 400 neighborhood parks and recreational sites. These various park lands take many forms including eight state parks, three national parks, an arboretum, a national preserve and dozens of city parks and gardens, many of which rest within Riverside, Avondale, Ortega, Murray Hill, San Marco, St. Nicholas, and San Jose. Many neighborhood parks are equipped with basic amenities, such as benches, trash barrels, bike racks, security lighting or playground equipment. Larger community parks will not only have benches, bike racks and garbage cans, but also picnic tables, playgrounds, picnic shelters, grills, parking, tennis courts, basketball hoops and restrooms. Jacksonville’s specialty parks highlight one-of-a-kind features, such as Friendship Fountain on the Southbank, or may include BMX courses, skateboarding ramps, remote-controlled vehicles or beachfront. Jacksonville’s first and oldest park,

Hemming Park, was originally a village green. Located across from City Hall, it no longer harbors grass, but still offers a shaded tree canopy, central fountain and other water features that make it a great lunchtime meeting place in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville. Meanwhile, a 250-year-old Live Oak Tree resides in Jessie Ball duPont Park on the Southbank. More than 70 feet tall with a 25-foot wide trunk, the tree is often a centerpiece for family photos, proposals, and other events. Another sacred Jacksonville greenspace is Memorial Park in Riverside. A six-acre community park, which was designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers who also

planned Central Park in New York City, Memorial Park commemorates the 1,220 Floridians who died in World War I. Its centerpiece is the iconic sculpture, “Life,” which was created by nationally renowned sculptor Adrian Pillars. For folks who enjoy playing with their dogs off-leash, free dog-parks within the greater Jacksonville area include the John Gorrie Dog Park at Riverside Park and Confederate Park in the heart of Springfield. Members-only Dog Wood Park off Salisbury Road allows for more than 40 acres of grassy fields, woods, and a small lake for puppy children to play.

Pet owners in Jacksonville and across the country have turned to SEVO-Med for state-of-the-art treatment for cancer and serious internal diseases for their pets for more than a decade. We carry on our tradition of providing cutting-edge medical advances in pet treatments through our new partnership with PetCure - introducing a less invasive and more compassionate treatment of pet cancer called stereotactic surgery (SRS) - a more advanced form of radiation therapy with less side effects and reduced treatment time.

SRS is truly a game changer for the veterinary community and pet owners throughout the region. With SRS, we can: Reduce treatment sessions and the use of anesthetics by 80 to 95 percent compared to conventional therapy -- with SRS delivered in only one to three sessions! Minimize treatment side effects. Treat a wider variety of cancers non-invasively with less toxicity, reducing the impact on quality of life for pets during treatment…and their owners! If you’re new to the First Coast, welcome! And, if you ever think your pet may have cancer or a serious internal disease – have your vet refer your pet to us. Should you need a veterinarian, feel free to contact us for a referral. We work with vets throughout the area - most of whom refer pets to us for specialized treatment.

Leave a Legacy

a Life Well Celebrated

Begin with what has been your passion and weave it throughout all aspects of the occasion. If you’re a gardener, perhaps an outdoor service under a flowering trellis with Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” and custom seed packets for guests. Is BBQ your trademark? Then plan a spicy good time with a bluegrass band and bottles of your secret sauce. Keep in mind, the more personal you make it, the more memorable it will be.

Whether they’re planning for themselves or a loved one, generations of Jacksonville’s families have trusted their final arrangements to our care. We welcome you to our community and we’re here for your family.

Our caring community Northeast Florida is fortunate to have a formidable community of over 1,000 registered charities within its five-county area, and Duval County is home to 70 percent of the registered nonprofits in the region. Many are faith-based, an outreach from a local church or synagogue, while other charities are born from a community need, particularly in arts, education and the relief of poverty. The nonprofit sector employs over 58,000 people, roughly 12 percent of the private workforce in the five-county

area. Nearly 34,000 of nonprofit workers are employed by four health care institutions: Baptist Health, St. Vincent’s Healthcare, UF Health Jacksonville and Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. Our historic districts are home to a large concentration of donors and volunteers. Their care and concern are expressed through many benevolent organizations and in a variety of ways. In fact, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, from 2006 to 2012 Jacksonville was the sixth most

generous city among 50 of the largest cities in the United States. To understand the impact of charity in our neighborhoods, look for a copy of Circles: Social Datebook and Charity Register, published annually by The Resident Community News Group in November. The magazine – and our website circlescharityregister.com – lists more than 200 of the top charities as well as the private foundations which distribute funds through grants to nonprofit organizations.

Those looking for a more tranquil nature experience should try the often-overlooked Dutton Island Preserve nearby. Atlantic Boulevard is the dividing line between Atlantic and Neptune Beach. Be sure to visit the poolside Lemon Bar at the Seahorse Inn for libations or enjoy a seafood dinner at Ragtime. Mainly residential, Neptune Beach is the home of The Bookmark, a wonderful independent bookstore, which often holds readings by local authors. Another Neptune Beach landmark is the 80-year-old institution known as Pete’s Bar, where the annual Thanksgiving party is an experience to remember. Both Atlantic and Neptune Beach celebrate the Dancin’ in the Street festival in May. Jacksonville Beach commands the longest share of the shoreline and has restaurants and bars to suit all tastes. The Seawalk Pavilion regularly hosts live outdoor

concerts and free movie nights. Be sure to mark your calendar for the Jax Beach’s annual Springing the Blues Festival in April. Ponte Vedra is home to the world-famous TPC Sawgrass golf course, with the 17th Hole’s iconic island green. It’s a can’t-miss for anyone with a yen for the game. If you’re a bigger fan of the tennis courts, be sure to check out the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club’s Racquet Club, and the official ATP Tennis Club, which features 15 clay courts and is consistently ranked among the top facilities in Florida. For a cultural experience, visit the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall to enjoy performances by Robert Earl Keen, Ani DiFranco, and David Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash. If it’s waves you crave, head to Mickler’s Landing near the intersection of A1A and Mickler Road on Ponte Vedra Boulevard for the only public stretch of shoreline in Ponte Vedra with restrooms and showers. Horseback riding and pets are allowed on the beach.

ST. AUGUSTINE 45 minutes south; I-95 South to Exit 318 East at FL 16 Just 45 minutes south of downtown Jacksonville, historic St. Augustine draws history buffs from around the world. Architectural enthusiasts enjoy touring both Flagler College’s Spanish Renaissance campus and the Lightner Museum’s Gilded Age collection of fine art and historical relics. Both buildings were originally hotels built by railroad baron Henry Flagler in the 1800s. Nearby St. George Street is packed with small museums, historical attractions, city tours, gift shops and some of the area’s best restaurants.

On the waterfront sits the 350-year-old Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The fort is open for daily tours, military re-enactments and cannon demonstrations. Also on the waterfront, aspiring pirates can sail the Black Raven Cruise or the Schooner Freedom for a dose of authentic and outlandish maritime history. For those who love kitsch, St. Augustine boasts a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum of oddities, an array of ghost tours, Potter’s Wax Museum, and pirate gear galore. The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park—the site of the earliest-settled area of St. Augustine—offers the opportunity

to drink from Ponce de Leon’s purported magical spring. It is also possible to explore reconstructions of the First Mission Church of Nombre de Dios and the native Timucuan village nearby. Music lovers know the St. Augustine Amphitheatre to be one of the region’s premier concert destinations for national acts like Boston, Third Eye Blind, and Bob Dylan. The Amphitheatre is just down the street from the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, one of Florida’s oldest continuously running attractions, having opened in 1893.

The Dungeness Mansion on Cumberland Island

A place to completely get away from it all, Cumberland Island, the largest of Georgia’s Golden Isles, is a nature lover’s dream. It teems with wildlife, and boasts multiple distinct ecosystems such as maritime forests, salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, tidal creeks, and undeveloped beaches. A herd of feral horses runs free, and visitors can enjoy hiking around the historical ruins of Dungeness, a mansion built in the late 19th century by Thomas M. Carnegie and destroyed by fire in the 1950s. No bridge exists between the mainland and the Island, a designated National Seashore. To visit, leave your car and catch a ride on the passengers-only ferry in St. Mary’s. Georgia. On Cumberland Island, walking or bicycling are the only ways to get around. The island is famous as the secluded location where John F. Kennedy Jr. married his wife, Carolyn Bessette. It’s solo commercial establishment is the all-inclusive, and expensive Grayfield Inn, built by the Carnegies in 1890, so it is better to pack all the food and drinks you are going to need for the day, and prepare to carry all trash home as there are no waste receptacles on the island.

Since bad weather and poor water quality can stop the tour schedule, it’s best to call head (850-561-7286) to avoid disappointing friends and family. A very popular tubing destination, the upper 3.5-mile stretch of the river is protected in the state park and contains eight major springs, each with its own charm. Swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving are also very popular activities in the 72-degree water temperature year round.

For history buffs, a 17th century Spanish mission site was found in the park about one mile downstream of the head of the river. Known as San Martin de Timucua, the site was considered for reconstruction of the mission to be open to the public, but those plans were dropped.
