To get a Florida driver license or identification card for the first time or to transfer an out-of-state license, residents must appear in person at a driver license office. ST. JOHNS RIVER HAS POWERFUL IMPACT ON COMMUNITY

ne of the things that makes our historic neighborhoods so special is their proximity to the St. Johns River and the many tributaries that wind their way through our communities. Despite being such a prominent feature and constant presence in our lives, the river is not as well-known or understood as one might think. In fact, the river is often misunderstood. I grew up in Jacksonville believing the urban myth that only a handful of rivers in the world flow north, including the St. Johns. It was not until I was hired by St. Johns Riverkeeper that I realized that this is not true. There are actually hundreds that also flow north. While this is still an uncommon feature, what really sets the St. Johns apart from others is how slow it flows. The St. Johns only falls about 27 feet, or an inch a mile, over its 310-mile journey to

As a result, it has been referred to as one of the “laziest” rivers in the world. In addition, we live in the estuary portion of the St. Johns, so the river can actually reverse flow at times due to the

tidal influences of the ocean. The downside is that our river doesn’t flush efficiently, so pollutants that are dumped into its waters remain for quite some time. The upside is that we have the benefit of both freshwater and saltwater species of fish and wildlife. You may be just as likely in many parts of the river to see a manatee as a bottlenose dolphin! Many people, even longtime residents, may also not be aware of the tremendous accolades bestowed upon our river. For instance, the St. Johns is the only river in Florida and one of only 14 rivers in the entire United States federally-designated as an American Heritage River. The St. Johns was awarded such an esteemed designation because of the tremendous historical, cultural, recreational, ecological, and economic benefits that it has provided to Florida and its citizens for generations. More recently, the America’s Great Waters

One of the reasons the river is so special is due to its rich history. The river has even been referred to as “America’s First River,” because it was the first river to be explored by Europeans in the New World. The French actually established Ft. Caroline on the river in 1564 – 43 years before the first English settlement in Jamestown! The St. Johns provides other economic and ecological benefits, as well. A 2015 University of Florida study concluded that the lower section of the river alone (Welaka to the Atlantic) annually provides billions of dollars in economic impact and ecosystem services for our region. St. Johns River wetlands result in almost $3 billion in savings for flood prevention and provide an economic value for nitrogen and phosphorus removal that exceeds $405 million a year.
Riverfront properties in the four counties studied increased in value $944 million due solely to river frontage, while tributary frontage properties increased $117 million. Even homes in close proximity to the river benefit, with an increased value of $837 million. I haven’t even touched on the numerous recreational, tourism, aesthetic or intangible benefits provided by the river, but hopefully the picture is clear – this is one great body of water and we are better off because of it. So, take the time to learn more about the St. Johns, including the pollution problems that threaten its future, and make an effort to get out there to experience and explore the river. We can’t afford to take it for granted, and we must do everything we can to ensure it continues to sustain our community for generations to come.

n an alternate version of the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy clicked her red heels together, shut her eyes and chanted, “There’s no place like home!” little did she know she would leave Oz and Kansas behind for Jacksonville’s eclectic historic neighborhoods. After Jacksonville’s Great Fire of 1901, Riverside quickly became popular as a showcase for a variety of architectural styles, among them revivals of many European designs, including the popular Greek, Gothic, Mediterranean, Tudor and Victorian. However, other lesser-known forms lend their unique features to Riverside’s eclectic architectural landscape.

Built almost immediately after the Great Fire, a Shingle and Queen Anne blended-style home at 1521 Riverside Avenue was one of more than 50 large-scale homes on what was called “The Row” between Edison Avenue and Margaret Street. Now known as the Riverdale Inn, the mansion is just one of two left from The Row. The other “Row” house is home to North Florida Dermatology Associates. Another popular residential design in early Riverside came from the Prairie School of Architecture, and none exemplifies the style better than 2821 Riverside Avenue. Built in 1913 by an architect unknown, yet rumored to have been Henry Klutho, this classic Prairie-style domicile once served as an osteopathic hospital. It is now home,

appropriately, to local historian and retired optometrist Wayne Wood, author of “Jacksonville’s Historical Heritage.” A decade after World War I ended, the head of the Cheek-Neal Coffee Company commissioned architect Roy Benjamin and builder Charles Davis, Jr. to construct a
four-story, eight-bedroom home of more than 8,500 square feet in the Jacobethan Revival style. Still referred to as the Cheek Castle, the waterfront mansion on River Boulevard draws locals and visitors to gaze beyond the ornamental iron fence at its crenelated tower.

Marketed as a place where “well-to-do” people would reside, Avondale quickly became popular after construction began in 1920. Nearly 200 homes were built in the first two years of development, mostly in the Mediterranean Revival style, such as two built for members of the Stockton family on Avondale Circle. Both Stockton homes are characteristic of the Spanish/Italian flavor of many homes in post-World War I Avondale. The homes were designed by architects Greeley & Benjamin and built in 1922, one for Avondale developer Telfair Stockton and the other for his son, James, who ran the various Stockton real estate and development companies after Telfair’s death in 1932. In contrast to the proliferation of Mediterranean Revival-style homes in Avondale, the Edward W. Lane residence (then later known as the Lane-Tower Mansion) was built in the Tudor Revival style in 1928, just prior to the Stock Market Crash of 1929. The riverfront mansion has over 11,000 square feet of finished space,

founder of the Venetia neighborhood and named his home after the row of cedar trees which lined the entrance to his front door. Although not built directly on the riverfront to avoid wind, the C.C. Bettes mansion on Ortega Boulevard has a direct view of the St. Johns River from its 2.5-acre lawn. Almost on the eve of its centennial birthday, the plantation home caught fire while undergoing renovations to restore it to its original 1909 Colonial Revival grandeur. The two-story home first built for Bettes, a pharmacist and partner in the John N.C. Stockton Development Company, has since been completely restored. Nearby Bettes Park was named for the original owner of the home, whose 24-hour Bay Street pharmacy in downtown Jacksonville included a 24-foot soda fountain.

Did you know? • Daniel McGirtt, for whom McGirts Boulevard is named, was a colonel in the Revolutionary War on the side of the American troops before moving to Ortega, which in 1780 was called Maxton’s Creek Island. • After Daniel McGirtt was jailed for the third and final time in 1796, John “Don Juan” McQueen moved onto McGirtt’s property, where he harvested timber for cypress shingles before selling the property to John McIntosh who renamed it Ortega, after the judge who helped facilitate the purchase.

Although early growth in Murray Hill was attributed to the 1920s “Great Florida Land Boom,” some of the area’s several dozen sites deemed to be potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places were built before and after the Roaring Twenties. According to an intensive architectural survey taken in 2006, 1,111 residential and commercial structures were documented with dates of construction between 1895 and 1958. These include simple brick oneand two-part commercial block buildings and early-20th century service stations within the commercial district as well as modest English Tudor cottages, basic bungalows, ornate Craftsman homes, and Minimal Traditional homes within the residential areas. Among the potential historic sites are a 1918 Sears catalog kit house – one of only three known in Jacksonville, and a 1900 Craftsman home. The others are homes built between 1911 and 1949 and include bungalows, Craftsman, Art Deco or masonry vernacular structures. In 1925 the majority of construction was done by speculative builders, so there were few architects involved. Two listed

on building permits include C.B. Jones and Henrietta Cuttino Dozier, the first female architect in Atlanta and then in Jacksonville. She was the third woman to become a member of the American Institute of Architects in the early 1900s. Six of the homes along French Street were designed by Dozier.

Unlike many of Jacksonville’s other historic districts, there aren’t many structures in San Marco built prior to the early 1920s. San Marco, originally incorporated as South Jacksonville, was created from the start by developer Telfair Stockton with an upscale Italian Renaissance Revival theme in mind. This historic district’s most popular feature is San Marco Square, which set the theme for the neighborhood’s Italian Renaissance history in the late 1920s. Even neighborhoods south of San Marco proper picked up on the Mediterranean theme, with street

names in Granada and Miramar sporting Spanish names. Part of the building boom in San Marco included a housing subdivision called Villa Alexandria, plotted in 1929. There you’ll find the two Swisher family estates, designed by architects Marsh & Saxelbye. The cigar magnates, father John and son Carl, had their Mediterranean Revival style homes erected on what was once the site of Villa Alexandria, an estate which belonged to railroad tycoon Alexander and Martha Reed Mitchell from 1872 to 1902.
Both of the elaborate homes on River Road were host to large and extravagant parties during the Depression. Nestled between Marco Lake and the St. Johns River is another Mediterranean Revival style residence built in 1928 for Dr. Lee E. Bransford, Sr. and designed by St. Nicholas architect George O. Holmes. Bransford’s son, Lee Jr., was an eye doctor and lived in the home until his death in 2012. Father and son were both members of the Duval County Medical Society when it celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1953.

The San Marco Preservation Society was formed in 1975 as a nonprofit to protect the integrity of the San Marco residential neighborhood and to enhance the revitalization of the business district. The group is charged with keeping the charm and character of San Marco intact. The group oversees San Marco Preservation Hall, a local landmark originally built in 1888 as St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, located at 652 Atlantic Boulevard. The space is leased for weddings, parties and meetings. Among the mansions which once dotted the south bank of the St. Johns River from St. Nicholas to Oak Haven, several can be found in the Palmer Terrace neighborhood, including a riverfront residence built in 1886 in a blend of the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles of architecture. The two-story home at 1117 Palmer Terrace features eight fireplaces and a music room. In nearby Empire Point, a late Victorianera Queen Anne mansion named Marabanong was built by Thomas Basnett in 1876. Basnett, a noted astronomer from England, married Eliza Wilbur, an internationally known scientist from New York, and they settled in Empire Point in 1880. The 21-room mansion once served as a “health spa” in the early 1900s, and at one point the George W. Trout family (relatives who inherited the property) maintained a zoo on the estate. Bought by a lawyer and his wife, a fine artist, in the early 1990s, the mansion has undergone two decades of restoration and renovation, and was accepted to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

St. Nicholas Area Preservation and St. Nicholas Business Association St. Nicholas Area Preservation, Inc., known as SNAP by the locals, was incorporated in 1979 and serves approximately 300 homes from Mayfair Road to Holmesdale Road, extending from the St. Johns River to Atlantic Boulevard. SNAP joined forces with the St. Nicholas Business Association in 2002 to revitalize the area with an improved town center, which was completed in 2009. Together the organizations took home the Award of Distinction during JaxPride Week 2007. Both groups are currently in hiatus as each seeks leadership and active members. The San Jose community developed in fits and starts, first brainstormed in 1914, then put on the back burner until after World War I. San Jose Estates was reborn in 1925 as a planned community to include hotels, a country club, yacht club, parks, schools and residences. However, the 1929 stock market crash, the Depression and then World War II slowed development again with completion of only about 30 of the anticipated thousands of homes to be built in the area. During the initial period of stops and starts, Epping Forest, the elaborate mansion designed by architects Mulford Marsh and Harold Saxelbye, was built in 1927 for Alfred I. duPont and his wife, Jessie Ball duPont. Named for an English forest that was home to an ancestor of Mrs. duPont, Epping Forest covered more than 60 acres with one mile of waterfront. Designed in the Mediterranean Revival style, its three-story tower at the main entrance was a focal point for visitors who enjoyed accommodations in the guest house or the main house. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Epping Forest made the switch from residential to commercial in 1984 when it was purchased by the president of Gate Petroleum Company and converted into a yacht club. Not too far down the road, the San Jose Country Club was also built in the Mediterranean Revival style in 1925 and was operated by the duPont Estate for nearly 20 years as a semi-private club for guests of the San Jose Hotel. Part of Jacksonville’s urban core, the historic district of Springfield has a significant number of historic structures, many erected in the late 1800s. The architectural style then was primarily Queen Anne and Colonial Revival, but after the Great Fire of 1901, Henry John Klutho introduced the avant garde Prairie style, experimenting with the design on his own home. Klutho’s home, first located at 2018 Main Street, is thought to be the first Prairie-style house in Florida. Built in 1909, it was host to political, financial and motion picture moguls and stars before the movie industry declined in Jacksonville. The house was moved to 30 West 9th Street in 1925, then
converted into a duplex rental unit after alterations were made, including a Spanishstyle arch. The home has since been restored to Klutho’s original design. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Less than a mile south of Klutho’s home is another historic building dating back to 1901, after the Great Fire. The architect of the Barnett Bank Building standing at that time, Leon Beaver of Knoxville, Tennessee, was commissioned to build a two-story Colonial Revival home by William B. Barnett, the bank’s founder. With few exceptions, the house has remained unchanged and was sold by the Barnett family in 1941 to Henry Klutho residence, 1909

Jacksonville’s park system – 80,000 acres of green space Jacksonville is not only the largest city in the United States land-wise, but also boasts the largest urban park system in the nation. Within its city limits lie more than 80,000 acres of green-space with more than 400 neighborhood parks and recreational sites. These various park lands take many forms including eight state parks, three national parks, an arboretum, a national preserve and dozens of city parks and gardens, many of which rest within Riverside, Avondale, Ortega, Murray Hill, San Marco, St. Nicholas, and San Jose. Many neighborhood parks are equipped with basic amenities, such as benches, trash barrels, bike racks, security lighting or playground equipment. Larger community parks will not only have benches, bike racks and garbage cans, but also picnic tables, playgrounds, picnic shelters, grills, parking, tennis courts, basketball hoops and restrooms. Jacksonville’s specialty parks highlight one-of-a-kind features, such as Friendship Fountain on the Southbank, or may include BMX courses, skateboarding ramps, remote-controlled vehicles or beachfront. Jacksonville’s first and oldest park,
Hemming Park, was originally a village green. Located across from City Hall, it no longer harbors grass, but still offers a shaded tree canopy, central fountain and other water features that make it a great lunchtime meeting place in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville. Meanwhile, a 250-year-old Live Oak Tree resides in Jessie Ball duPont Park on the Southbank. More than 70 feet tall with a 25-foot wide trunk, the tree is often a centerpiece for family photos, proposals, and other events. Another sacred Jacksonville greenspace is Memorial Park in Riverside. A six-acre community park, which was designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers who also
planned Central Park in New York City, Memorial Park commemorates the 1,220 Floridians who died in World War I. Its centerpiece is the iconic sculpture, “Life,” which was created by nationally renowned sculptor Adrian Pillars. For folks who enjoy playing with their dogs off-leash, free dog-parks within the greater Jacksonville area include the John Gorrie Dog Park at Riverside Park and Confederate Park in the heart of Springfield. Members-only Dog Wood Park off Salisbury Road allows for more than 40 acres of grassy fields, woods, and a small lake for puppy children to play.

The Dungeness Mansion on Cumberland Island
A place to completely get away from it all, Cumberland Island, the largest of Georgia’s Golden Isles, is a nature lover’s dream. The island is famous as the secluded location where John F. Kennedy Jr. married his wife, Carolyn Bessette. It’s solo commercial establishment is the all-inclusive, and expensive Grayfield Inn, built by the Carnegies in 1890, so it is better to pack all the food and drinks you are going to need for the day, and prepare to carry all trash home as there are no waste receptacles on the island.

freshwater springs. Glass-bottom boat tours of the spring reveal amounts of mastodon, giant sloth, giant armadillo and camel bones. Since bad weather and poor water quality can stop the tour schedule, it’s best to call head (850-561-7286) to avoid disappointing friends and family. The Wakulla Springs Lodge, completed in 1937, has only one television – in the lobby – among its 27 guest rooms. The Mediterranean Revival architecture is carried throughout the lodge, furnished with period furniture, including a grand piano, marble checker tables and a massive fireplace.
