MEET YOUR VICE CHANCELLOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS, DR. MCGINTY Dear Rutgers Students: Rutgers is a community that cares. We DO SOMETHING when we are concerned about members of our community. I’m therefore writing to you today to share information and to encourage you to do something under any of the followingsituations: • You are concerned about a fellow student; • You are concerned about stress, anxiety, depression, substance use and other problems interfering with your academic, social and personal success; • You are concerned about a friend who has consumed too much alcohol; • You are concerned about your personal safety. You are concerned about a fellow student: If you are concerned about a fellow student and do not know where to go for help, visit the Health Services webpage (http://health.rutgers.edu/) and look for the “Concerned? Do Something!" button shown below to submit a concern form that will be received by a University official who will be able to provide assistance and guidance on the issue(s) of concern. Concerns include issues related to drug-use, threat to themselves (e.g., suicide) or others, emotional well being (e.g., depression), and/or disruptive or aggressive behaviors in the Rutgers community. You are concerned about stress, anxiety, depression, substance use and other problems interfering with your academic, social and personal success: Students experiencing stress, anxiety, substance abuse and/or depression are encouraged to contact CAPS (Counseling, Alcohol & Other Drug Assistance Program and Psychiatric Services). CAPS is located at 17 Senior Street on the College Avenue campus. To schedule an appointment with a CAPS counselor students can dial (848) 932-7884. After hours or while away from campus, crisis services are available 24/7 through the NJ Hopeline at 855-654-6735 OR through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL) at 1-800-273 -TALK (8255) - this service can be reached from anywhere in the country and is available 365/24/7. You are concerned about a friend who has consumed too much alcohol: The University encourages all members of our community to help others who are in need of medical assistance due to excessive consumption of alcohol or other drug by calling 9-1-1. Per the University’s Alcohol Policy and State Law, any person who is underage and who reports that an underage person needs medical care due to alcohol consumption is immune from legal penalties. Please call 9-1-1 when your friend is in distress because of alcohol or the consumption of other substances (e.g., illegal drugs). We encourage all students to become familiar with the University’s Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy (Policy #10.2 .14 - http://policies.rutgers.edu/view-policies/alphabetical-list-policies). You are concerned about your personal safety: Every student should take responsibility for his or her own safety by being aware of available resources and of their surroundings at any given time. Students are encouraged to contact RUPD when they witness or suspect suspicious activity by either calling 9-1-1 in the case of an immediate emergency, or (732) 932-711 if using your cell phone, or 2-7111 if using a campus phone. When walking in the neighborhoods adjacent to campus, students are advised to minimize the use of mobile devices to prevent motor vehicle accidents when crossing streets and sudden surprises by unknown persons intending to engage in criminal activity. Lastly, students are encouraged to use a buddy-system or walk in groups when traveling to and from campus in the evenings or when socializing on the weekends. Lets continue to keep ourselves and each other safe this semester and in the year ahead! Felicia E. McGinty, EdD Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

WHAT IS
CAPS?
WELCOME TO COUNSELING, ADAP & PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES (CAPS)! Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) was created in September, 2006, by joining the major mental health services on campus into one organization, as part of the Rutgers Health Service. CAPS now includes Counseling Services, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) and Psychiatric Services. The CAPS main office is located on College Avenue at 17 Senior Street. We also maintain a counseling office on the Cook/Douglass Campus at 61 Nichol Avenue. CAPS is dedicated to serving the students and faculty at Rutgers -New Brunswick by providing comprehensive mental health services to the campus community. CAPS strives to provide services that are designed to help students reach and maintain a positive, productive university experience, ranging from various counseling services, educational and preventive initiatives, training programs, outreach and consultation activities, and to provide guidance on how to contribute to a caring healthy community. As specialists in working with undergraduate and graduate students, we can help students address whatever it is that may be of concern to them. We will do our best to ensure that students get their needs met, through a CAPS group, individual counseling, or a referral to another community resource. http://rhscaps.rutgers.edu/general-information
