MYKONOS
PETINOS’
OF
Maria Makrygianni is a pure Mykonian lady who was born and raised on the legendary island of Mykonos and the designer behind the illustrious company GEORGIOS & CO Fine Jewellery. She knows nearly every stone in Mykonos island and this is what makes the difference in her jewellery creations. We caught up with Maria to discover more about the pieces she designs and creates and how they reflect the beauty of the island of Mykonos.
What makes a piece of jewellery timeless? What is the heart of Georgios & Co’s Fine Jewellery Collections?
Designing and creating Georgios & Co jewellery is a complex process that requires a high sense of aesthetics and excellent craftmanship. It’s this aesthetic that informs the design of the piece and helps make it unique and ultimately timeless. Craftmanship is the second but also most vitally important ingredient that ensures precision and quality in every piece. It’s both my dream and passion to design and create jewellery that our customers will hold on to and cherish for life.
How do your pieces incorporate the islands of Mykonos & Delos?
Georgios & Co has a long history on the island of Mykonos. In fact, two of the collections that were ever designed were the Mykonos Collection and the Delos Collection. Contemporary but timeless at the same time, the Mykonos Collection encompasses the light, the wind, the sea – all elements which abound on the island – and draws from the cosmopolitan character and vibe that Mykonos exudes. The Delos Collection comprises unique pieces of jewellery inspired by Delos island’s truly matchless location. The exceptionally

beautiful aspects of Delos created centuries ago are the basis of the jewellery in the Delos Collection – aspects that leave a truly lasting impression. You could say that anyone lucky enough to have acquired a piece from the collection has also acquired a part of Delos’ history.
What are, in your opinion, those singular or particular elements that have helped you stand out from the competition in the Mykonos Market?
The quality of the items and their timelessness, the excellent service offered, and ultimately the fact that I truly believe in and love what I do. How do you spend your time on Mykonos? Is it difficult to balance work and pleasure? Mykonos is indeed a truly inimitable place. I chose to live on this wonderful island, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. The architecture, the sun, sea and wind, they are all elements that give me so much inspiration and drive to continue to design and create jewellery.
Are your sons planning to enter the family business?
Both of my sons have expressed an interest in the word of jewellery from a very young age. They marvel at the process of making a piece by hand and they’re curious about it. Just seeing them in our workshop and our stores fills me with joy and gives me energy. I believe they will be worthy successors of our family tradition and take the company with its 40 year history even further in the future.
After your admittedly impressive career trajectory, what is your philosophy? Do what you love and love what you do which I believe is echoed in the best way possible in the jewellery we make.

ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY
White and blue houses (and green and red doors and shutters) are the required paint color in Mykonos.
At some point in history, when the Greek islands suffered from a scarcity of wood, buildings were constructed using readily available volcanic stone. While the dark stones were good insulators, they would absorb heat from the sun, making for hot houses. To cool things down, locals painted the stones white to reflect the heat, and blue because the cleaning agent loulaki (blue-colored powder) was cheap, easily available, and could be painted on homes when mixed with limestone plaster. Blue and white became the official colors of the Cycladic islands when a military government came to power in 1967, making it a requirement for all buildings to be painted blue and white. Mykonos’ color code also requires that doors and shutters on buildings be painted blue, green, or red, a tradition that dates back to when sailors painted their doors blue, farmers painted theirs green, and everyone else red. Today, local laws respect these traditions, requiring doors and shutters on buildings to be blue, green or red.
KITESURFING
Mykonos is a haven for both novice and seasoned kitesurfers
Offering an exhilarating fusion of adrenaline and serenity against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea’s azure beauty, Mykonos is a kitesurfer’s dream. Whether gliding gracefully along the coastline or catching air with thrilling jumps, kitesurfers revel in the freedom of the sport in both the natural paradise of Korfos Bay and the surfer’s paradise Ftelia. With its consistent summer winds, crystal clear waters, easy accessibility and expansive beaches, Mykonos is a haven for those seeking the ultimate kitesurfing experience amidst the splendor of the Greek Isles.

MANTO SQUARE
The bustling Manto Square is eponymously dedicated to the female commander of Mykonos, Magdalena “Manto” Mavrogenous, who helped change the course of history in Greece. Visitors to the Old Harbor will find her largerthan-life memorial bust on a tall pedestal at the center’s heart. Known in social circles as “la bella Greca” because of her elegant beauty, “Manto” was born in 1796 in Italy to a wealthy Greek family, donated all her money to fund the War of Independence in 1821, led military expeditions, supported the training of local revolutionary forces and was credited with causing the Turks to retreat.

Festivals of Saints
Local folklore gatherings, held on holidays when the saints of specific churches are being celebrated, can be enjoyed throughout the year. Here are some of the big ones.
JUNE 11
Feast of the Virgin Mary in Tragonisi – The Church of the Virgin Mary, celebrates the day of Saints Barnabas and Bartholomew. The small church is up a steep slope and after the service, a feast takes place in a cavernous hollow in the rocks (where only men are allowed to enjoy food and wine.)
JULY 7
No one is allowed to stay on the preserved ancient city of Delos except for on the eve of Agia Kriaki’s Day (Saint Kyriaki). The small chapel built in the 19th century for the religious needs of the workers at the archaeological sites offers an evening service with blessed bread flavored with mastiha and then a feast with food and drink that spills out into the flag decked courtyard. Before the feast, attendees can enjoy a shot of goat broth.
JULY 27
The 17th-century monastery at Agios Panteleimonas in the rural village of Marathi celebrates its homonymous saint during this day, where there’s a large festival with lots of singing, dancing and local food and drinks.
AUGUST
A great feast takes place at the church of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera village, known as Greece’s “little Easter,” or dekapentavgoustos, when families flock from all over the world to celebrate the festival of the Panagia - or Virgin Mary - with their loved ones.
Some 40 days before Easter, at the beginning of Lent, Easter season kicks off when the holy icon of Panagia Tourliani Monastery in Ano Mera is carried in a holy procession down to Chora, where it is displayed in the Church of St. Helena until the Saturday before Palm Sunday, when it returns home. In the following week, island bakeries prepare lazarakia, a sweet and savory pastry shaped like tiny men, and lambrokouloures, a sweet Easter bread topped with a red egg, the traditional symbol of Christ’s blood. Good Friday is the procession of the Epitaph (the bier of Christ), as various churches compete for the most beautifully flowerbedecked masterpiece. The following Holy Saturday, locals and guests gather at a midnight mass to receive the Holy Light, which comes to Greece all the way from Jerusalem. Then, as fireworks light up the sky, a preliminary feast to end the fast, featuring the traditional Easter soup of lamb innards and greens called mageiritsa, is served, followed by non-stop revelry throughout the night. Easter Sunday caps this Holy Week with a festive feast of whole lamb roasted outdoors on the spit, traditional onion pie, locally produced kopanisti cheese and louza sausages, more red eggs, and other assorted Greek and Mykonian specialties.
The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos
VISITORS TO THIS OLD HARBOR NEOCLASSICAL BUILDING, established in 1902 to preserve findings recovered from the Purification Pit (a hole that contained numerous urns and vessels of offerings), which dates back to 426425 B.C., will find, among other gems, ancient ceramics and pottery excavated on Mykonos and Delos, remnants of a second-century B.C. marble statue of Hercules, many intricately designed vases, an ancient urn unearthed in 1961 that depicts scenes from the fall of the Trojan army from the quintessential Trojan Horse, and one of the museum’s best-known artifacts, the archaic red-figure Hydria embellished with floral patterns and images of horses.

CLASSIC ONION PIE, MYKONOS KREMIDOPITA, has roots stretching back as far as the island. Locals usually make it with homemade pastry sheets sprinkled with extra-virgin olive oil. On the island, versions of this classic hearty pie can be found throughout – full of flavor and history.
A Proper Greek Celebration
At Blue Myth Restaurant at Petinos Hotel, the “Greek Nights” celebration is one not to be missed. Every Wednesday and Sunday, the restaurant revels in traditional Greek culture with singing, dancing and, of course, great food and wine. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a “Glendi” (traditional Greek feast) under the stars with a few surprises on tap for those who attend as well. Blue Myth is the original restaurant of Petinos’ Resorts Of Mykonos, a place where family has gathered for decades to celebrate traditional meals.

MULTIPLE
HOURS and consecutive days at the beach. Whether that’s lounging on your resort’s private strip of powdery sands, hopping from famed bays to secluded islets, or dancing with a mastiha in hand at one of the island’s venerable seaside clubs, the beach is simply embedded in Mykonos’ culture.
The 10,000 residents that call the island home year-round, however, would share there’s so much more that’s worth exploring during your visit. Much of it revolves around nature, like chartering a yacht for a day to sail between the patchwork of islands and dive into the crystal waters of crowdless coves, or submerging under the waves by way of scuba diving for a peek into the rich marine life of the ancient shipwrecks. Go ahead and plan your day, or days, at the beach, but be sure to add on enough extra time for these can’t-miss experiences around Mykonos.
WATERSPORTS
From jetskiing and wakeboarding to kitesurfing and parasailing, there’s a plethora of ocean activities waiting to satiate travelers with a wild side.
If a less adrenaline-spiking adventure is what you’re after, there’s always scuba diving to leisurely immerse in the depths of the Mediterranean’s diverse seabed. The Peloponnese Wreck off Mykonos is one of the most iconic dives in the Greek islands, but if you can’t dedicate a whole day to it, there’s always closer dive sites where a flurry of marine life awaits, from starfish and octopus to lobster and eels.

THE ISLAND OF THE WINDS
Dating back to the 16th century, when Mykonos was an agricultural hub, the cluster of windmills that fill Kato Myloi are a symbol of the island. Monikered as “the Island of the Winds,” the Venetians built these structures to take advantage of the strong gusts that ultimately aided in the crushing of Mykonos’ primary yield of wheat. By the 20th century, due to the progress of technology, the windmills were no longer in use, but their prominent domes were preserved as landmarks. The five historic windmills of Kato Myloi are a short walk from the neighborhood of Little Venice. With its waterfront cafes and weathered homes, this is another must-visit.

Recognized as one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, the entire island of Delos is an open-air museum, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Delos was considered to be the birthplace of the divine twins Apollo and Artemis, and the ongoing excavation (since 1832) has unearthed findings that provide a peek into the ancient world, with monuments, statuettes, sculptures, inscriptions and sizable parts of temples. Here lies The Temple of Delians, built between 476 and 314 B.C. as one of three temples dedicated to Apollo; The Terrace of Lions, of which only seven of the dozen marble lions remain; and The Ancient Theatre, a well-preserved 5,500-seat amphitheatre. Witnessing the modern life of a local marketplace, called The Agora, amongst the ancient ruins, is quite a remarkable experience. After basking in history, continue to soak it all in on Delos’ sibling island, Rhenia — the pristine stretches of golden sands are a protected area along with its two mountainous inlets, Mikros Rematiaris and Megalos Rematiaris, which make it perfect for simply unwinding and reflecting on the history you just witnessed.

WHAT WILL YOU
remember from your visit to Mykonos? Will it be way the morning sun streaks the winding streets, lighting the cascades of fuchsia bougainvillea framing bright blue doors? Think designer clothing for men and women, precious gemstone jewelry designed by local artists and exclusive luxury brands and boutiques teeming with accessories and gifts.
Chora, the island’s well-preserved port and capital, is a labyrinth of narrow lanes and whitewashed buildings. Mykonos is an area of 85.5 square kilometers (33 square miles) and is considered a small island. But the excitement and vibrancy of Matoyianni (Matogianni) Street belies the island’s size, with a

Named after Matoyannis Anastassiou, a hero of the Greek War of Independence, the street’s atmosphere combines the buzz of a vibrant city with the charm of a traditional Greek village. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed buildings, colorful shutters and quaint balconies overflowing with flowers –all reminiscent of classic Cycladic

His story is the tale of a young tailor who worked with French haute couture’s finest and married his assistant, Koula Veroni, raising five children and building a successful business. Joseph began his career sewing suits and trousers for the locals and some travelers visiting Mykonos, so, when a young female tourist asked him to make trousers for her, he created the first pattern for women’s trousers in Greece. CALL TO THE
Neighborhoods
On Mykonos, there are a handful of unique neighborhoods and cohesive communities where people work, live, play, explore and create.

commercial streets give way to languid lanes lined with Cycladic architecture. Coastal roads lead to sandy beaches and sunset parties. Throughout the island, a number of colorful areas lure visitors with personalities of their own. Here are some of the neighborhoods on the island that will speak to you if you listen.

MYKONOS TOWN
Chora (also known as Hora, the Old Port and Mykonos Town), is the energetic commercial and retail mecca of Mykonos. Of course, shopping in Chora at luxe boutiques along Matoyianni Street could occupy your visit to the capital city, but you can also check out the famous galleries and museums. To get around, visitors will need to walk: Motorized vehicles are prohibited from entering the town, as the streets are narrow, curvy and twisted, filled with whitewashed buildings, shops and restaurants. Lena’s house is a 19th century townhouse folk museum illustrating what life would look like in the 19th century with period piece furniture and two traditional Mykonian dresses, inspired by lithographs of 17th and 18th century travelers. The small but mighty Archaeological Museum of Mykonos provides a thorough history of the island and its quest for independence. Follow winding pebbled alleys lined with designer shops, lively cafes, trendy bars, traditional taverns, gourmet restaurants and dazzling white churches.

LITTLE VENICE
In mid-18th-century Mykonos, captains and merchants were inspired by the architecture of Venice, Italy, (founded in 450 A.D.) and built their mansions with balconies hovering over the Aegean Sea. In Little Venice, two- and three-story buildings with flat roofs and brightly painted doors line a maze of narrow alleys flashing masses of fragrant flowers. During the 14th century, Mykonos lay under the direct rule of the Venetians until the 18th century, when the island fell into the hands of the Ottoman Empire. Although giant waves would often crash against the buildings, these quaint, whitewashed houses would withstand the assault of strong winds and stand proud. Regarded as one of the most romantic spots in Mykonos, Little Venice has a backdrop of the famous windmills and is lined with colorful 18th-century fishing houses. Many historic homes have been transformed into cozy restaurants, trendy bars, shops and lively nightclubs, creating a buzz through Little Venice at every hour of the day.

ANO MERA
Ano Mera is the quiet cousin to animated Chora. In this pretty village in the middle of the island, life is centered around the large public square, with a web of lanes that reach into a more traditional residential landscape dotted with livestock and working gardens. A morning in Ano Mera will provide a peek into the authentic life of a villager, with locals moving through their day at bakeries, cafes, and mom and pop shops. Find peace and history at the Panagia Tourliani Monastery, founded in 1542 and renovated in 1767 with a small museum inside featuring vestments, Byzantine and Renaissance icons, the first bells of the monastery, and other ecclesiastical gems. Panagia Tourliani is considered the patron saint of the island and is celebrated with a festival annually on Aug. 15. The village of Ano Mera is topped by windmills, built when the industry on Mykonos was focused on grain production, specifically wheat.

ORNOS
Rolling hills dotted with bright white Cycladic houses dip down to a dreamy beach that stretches out along the crescent-shaped coastline of Ornos. The beach’s fine sand and turquoise sea set a perfect stage for sunbeds and umbrellas for day trippers. The bay is sheltered from strong winds and waves and is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, making it a family-friendly beach. The streets of Ornos are lined with seafood and pasta restaurants, taverns serving local wine and cafes pouring strong coffee and cocktails. Hire a captain for a private brunch cruise on a motor yacht or a sail on a catamaran loaded with water toys. Cruises cover all southern shores, such as Super Paradise, and even head to neighboring Rhenia and Delos islands.

A RICH TRADITION OF CELEBRATION
The Mykonian summer comes to life with festivals of all kinds.
BY GEOFF NUDELMAN
OUTSIDE OF THE
vibrant and famous nightclub culture, Mykonos has a rich history of celebration through festivals recognizing the religious and story-driven heritage of the region. While some of the events are new, and others stretch back centuries, they all bring together locals and visitors to revel in the rich culture that Mykonos and its surrounding islands are known for.
THE MYKONOS
FOLKLORE FESTIVAL
This festival uses dance and storytelling to celebrate those who have contributed to the identity of the island. It includes traditional dance, cultural practices, and of course, food. The festival also recognizes the reach of the orthodox branch of Christianity, which stretches here from North Macedonia to Italy.
Antonis Antoninis’ traditional dance group, Mykoniatiki Veggera, is a feature of the festival. “I teach the traditional dances of Mykonos and Greece in general as I learned them from my grandparents and my parents,” says Antoninis, whose group participates in national and international dance, music and culinary festivals. “Traditional dances such as syrto, balaristo, balo, kalamatiano and sousta are the ones which our ancestors danced in their celebrations in general. For us Mykonians, this is tradition.”
The Folklore Festival marks
the start of the busy celebratory season, with most other events taking place in late July through August, then again once harvest begins (typically in late September or early October).
The predominant dish of the Folklore Festival is boiled lamb with plenty of lemon. There is also kremidopita (traditional onion pies), kopanisti (spiced feta dip), dolmas (stuffed vine rolls) and louza (an Aegean cured meat). Mykonian musicians known as “zygies” play the tsampouna (a type of bagpipe), along with violins, lutes, santouri (a stringed musical instrument) and accordions that set the tempo for traditional dances.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
This popular festival in Mykonos is held at the Agricultural Museum every year on the second Sunday in September. In this unique Mykonos festival, villagers bake bread in the oven and bring wine and food while musicians play traditional musical instruments for everyone to dance and celebrate the feast of harvest. It also boasts traditional animal games, traditional crops, different types of livestock, and various activities.
XLSIOR
Mykonos’ major Pride event takes place August 22-28.
Although the festival is meant to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, the party atmosphere brings together visitors from all walks of life to celebrate acceptance and happiness. This year, XLSIOR celebrates its 15th year with an extensive array of programming, concerts and more that promises to be its most captivating to date. Although Mykonian summers are synonymous with long nights out and a special kind of excitement, there’s almost as much revelry (if not more) with these special traditions that all intertwine to create the rich tapestry and identity of the island.

HIDDEN GEMS
While visiting Mykonos, exploring any of these off the beaten path spots will enhance your stay.

EURIPIDES, THE LAST OF CLASSICAL
Athens’ three great tragic dramatists, following Aeschylus and Sophocles, encouraged us to: “Experience, travel — these are an education in themselves.” Passionately interested in ideas and the curator of a large personal library, the Greek playwright urged us to seek, explore and learn. So, while you’re in Mykonos, allow us to suggest a few gems to enhance your journey.
ARMENISTIS LIGHTHOUSE
In 1891, the Armenistis lighthouse was erected, and today is still a fully functioning lighthouse standing like a sentinel over the Amenistis area, proudly overlooking the island of Tinos. A testimony to Mykonos’ maritime history, it is 19 meters tall at 184 meters above sea level, providing some of the island’s most breathtaking views. The sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887 off the north coast of the island prompted community leaders to build the lighthouse, partnering with Sauter Lemonier of Paris, who installed a modern lighting machine, which was exhibited and awarded at the Paris International Exhibition. Visitors curious about the original lighting machinery can view it in the courtyard of the Aegean Maritime Museum in Mykonos Town.

BAOS ISLET
A jewel of the Aegean is the island of Agios Georgios (or Baos Islet), one of several tiny islands that surround and belong to the people of Mykonos. The storied island has a white chapel dotted with a red roof, dedicated to St. George, built in honor of the legendary pirate George Bao, a defender of Mykonos during the first revolution of 1770 who chose this small island as a strategic position to fight bravely against the Turks. From his island vantage point, Pirate Bao was able to loot and fight off enemy ships anchored on the narrow passage between the two islands. The little island was given to Bao to reward him for his bravery. Also, local legend has it that Agios Georgios is where they used to exile vrikolakas (Greek vampires) from Mykonos. Surrounded by saltwater, the vrikolakas could not escape.

THE PANAGIA PARAPORTIANI CHURCH
While there are some 400 churches across the island, this classic beauty, The church of Panagia Paraportiani, near the Kastro area, is composed of five chapels (only one of which is open to visitors) and is a symbol of the island’s rich history and cultural heritage. Built in 1425, The Panagia Paraportiani Church (its name means “Madonna of the Side Gate”) is a lovely example of Cycladic architecture, characterized by whitewashed buildings with rounded edges and minimal decoration. Traditional Cycladic buildings are in perfect harmony with the natural environment with built in rocky recesses, using cavities for tanks and storage areas. The history of the church is closely tied to the history of the island, as Mykonos was an important trade and shipping center in the Aegean Sea during the Middle Ages, and the church was built for the local Orthodox Christian community. Over the centuries, it’s been damaged by fires, earthquakes and other natural disasters. It has also undergone numerous renovations and restorations.

PAGKA MARKET
Celebrating native culture and supporting local growers and artisans always deserves a place on any well-rounded travel itinerary. The daily morning market at the Old Port of Mykonos Town is called the Pagka (meaning “bench” in Greek). Mykonians head here in the early hours of the day where sellers have gathered and arranged their catch and produce on large marble slab benches. This is the spot where locals buy their fresh fish, fruits and vegetables, and it’s always abuzz with animated conversation. The market is open daily from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m., closed Sunday. Find seasonal vegetables like robust tomatoes, honey, Mediterranean herbs, traditional Mykonian cheeses, table grapes and more.

How to get up close with Greek culinary culture at Rizes Mykonos.
BY GEOFF NUDELMAN
It’s no secret that Greeks love their cuisine. Food and drink are two of the most vibrant parts of the country’s culture, and Mykonos has its own distinctive flavors and styles that have melded their way into visitors’ palates for as long as they’ve been coming to the island.
Foodies who would like an immersion in Greek cooking have multiple ways to explore Greek culinary culture, with ample opportunity to get hands-on with the very ingredients that have fed and satiated the people here for millennia. It’s important to set aside up to half a day to fully immerse in one of the working farms around the island, where the only thing richer than the traditions might be the food.

MAKING BREAD AT A WORKING FARM
At Rizes Mykonos, visitors to this farmstead get a real taste of what it’s like to be on a working farm in Greece. The day begins with a tour of the grounds, collecting ingredients along the way to later be used in the open-air kitchen in the main yard of the farmstead. The chef will educate guests about the Mykonian ingredients they have gathered and together, a dish is prepared and enjoyed at the traditionally decorated table, complete with local wine and tsipouro (a Greek liquor). Those who work on the farm also educate visitors about the history of Mykonian agriculture and the significance of the meal they prepared and will be eating. This extends to their freshly baked breakfast bread-making course in an authentic wood oven. (If you don’t have time for a half day at the farm, you can join them for lunch or dinner without the preparation in advance).
One of the highlights of visiting Rizes is having guided access to a remote beach area on the north, uninhabited side of the island. Here, the farmstead team will prepare a light lunch that guests can enjoy in this private paradise for an unforgettable afternoon. (rizesmykonos.com)

George Syrianos, the third-generation cheesemaker who runs Mykonos Farmers
THE ISLAND OF MYKONOS,
nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural and celebrity heritage. But dairy, particularly cheesemaking, is as much a part of Greek and Mykonos tradition as fishing or winemaking.
And nowhere is the spirit and tradition of Greek dairy artistry more prominent than the family-owned Mykonos Farmers. Creating traditional cheeses and yogurts in a modern facility, using milk from their own herds of 150 sheep and goats, these master cheesemakers produce artisan products not to be missed.
“Dairy has been a source of life for many generations, the people of the countryside lived with the animals and ate what they could offer them as they found ways to preserve them,” says George Syrianos, the third-generation cheesemaker who runs the business. After working as an electrical engineer for 25 years, Syrianos returned to Mykonos and his roots to modernize and run the factory.
“What makes our cheese shop special is that we combined tradition with technology, using grandmother’s recipes without chemicals and additives, making it possible for the visitor to taste something unique,” he says. Syrianos says his current life gives him a renewed sense of pride and joy.
A great example of this is the factory’s kopanisti cheese, a spicy soft cheese and perhaps the oldest traditional cheese of Mykonos. The factory has a reputation for making the best kopanisti in all of Greece, so it is a unique delight for visitors touring the facility. It’s a cheese that sustained farmers and households for centuries. “Dairy has been a source of life for many generations, the people of the countryside lived with the animals and ate what they could preserve,” says Syrianos.
In particular, Mykonians managed to preserve kopanisti cheese for months, adding salt and pressing it to excrete its moisture, creating a cheese that is delicious, nutritious and versatile. “They managed to make a delicious cheese that you can keep without refrigeration, and that goes well with nuts and tomatoes or watermelon, but can also be an excellent appetizer for ouzo,” says Syrianos.
VISITING MYKONOS FARMERS
The facility is located in Agios Lazaros, where you can participate in interactive presentations crumbing, kneading, mixing and cooking sweet and salty delicacies. Cheesemaking courses are available where guests can learn to make natural cheeses without packaged starters or chemicals, how to source the best milk, and to make cheese around a table. HOW THE STARS ALIGNED ON
MYKONOS
From supermodels and jet-setters to Hollywood’s A-listers, the island’s pristine beauty has attracted celebrities for decades.
BY TERENCE LOOSE
Now known as much for its five-star resorts, fine dining and celebrity visits as its quaint whitewashed villas and perfect beaches, Mykonos was not always in the world’s spotlight. During the first half of the 20th century, the island was a tranquil and traditional community with islanders living off the land and sea, farming and fishing and enjoying the natural beauty of their home. Tourists were a rarity.
That began to change from the 1930s to the 1950s when a small contingent of artists, writers and intellectuals began visiting the island, mostly seeking inspiration among its archeological sites, traditional villages and quiet solitude. Still, during this era, nearby Delos outshone Mykonos for archeological and historical significance and “tourism” remained more curiosity than industry. So, while the seeds of what Mykonos as a luxury tourist destination were sown, no one, least of all the locals, were watering them with any regularity or vigor.

THE JET-SETTERS LAND (1960S)
In the late-1950s and 1960s, Mykonos lost its quiet obscurity thanks to the arrival of the jetsetters. Ironically, it came by yacht. Shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and his glamorous wife, Jackie, owned another Greek island, Skorpios, and began visiting Mykonos aboard their yacht as they sailed the Greek isles. Soon, celebrities like actress Grace Kelly and other newsworthy stars began showing up. Mykonos changed in response to this new influx of internationally known tourists, a set used to luxury and pampering. They came for the laid-back beaches, pristine waters and relaxed atmosphere, but they demanded modern amenities and fine dining - or at the very least electricity and running water. Mykonians accommodated, with the beginnings of a sophisticated tourism trade.
While married to Aristotle Onassis, Jackie Onassis paid an official visit to the island of Mykonos in June of 1961.
PIERRO’S OPENS (1970S)
In the 1970s, in large part thanks to Jackie Onassis introducing her gay friends to the island, Mykonos began to become known as the most gay-friendly destination in Greece. The locals welcomed the gay community and in 1973, Italian-American painter Pierro Aversa and Mykonian local fisherman Andreas Koutsoukos opened Pierro’s, the island’s first gay bar.
With risque drag shows and allnight parties, the bar soon gained a reputation for rivaling Studio 54, attracting celebrities, artists, international playboys, and anyone with an open mind and creative soul. Pierro’s stayed alive and partying until the mid-aughts, when the doors finally closed. However, in 2010, the famous bar opened again as Rock n’ Roll, still located in Agia Kyriaki Square.

Perhaps the only surprise in the world’s most beautiful people finding one of the world’s most beautiful islands was how long it took. But the ‘80s saw a surge of supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell frequenting Mykonos, draping the island in glamor and fame.
At the same time, artists were drawn to the island’s timeless charm, perfect light and raw beauty. Icons like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol found inspiration in the island’s land and seascapes, adding to Mykonos’ reputation as a creative muse.
This led to a cultural renaissance, with the island’s artistic and intellectual community thriving. Galleries and studios around town emerged to showcase the works of both emerging talents and established masters.
THE STARS COME OUT (1990S)
Jet-setters, supermodels and artists are all well and good, but when Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lopez show up, the world sits up and takes notice. And beginning in the 1990s, these and other A-list Hollywood stars discovered Mykonos as a place where they could unwind and enjoy sun, fun and fabulous food. They enjoyed the island’s unspoiled beauty, but also the new crop of luxury resorts and beach clubs that provided some form of privacy.
The star parade seemed endless: Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Liam Neeson, Hugh Jackman, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, the list goes on. Mykonos soon became a star-studded retreat known for V.I.P. parties as well as celebrity romantic getaways.

SOCIAL MEDIA INVADES (2000S)
The ubiquitous popularity of social media in the 2000s, combined with the celebrity and natural beauty of Mykonos, turbo-charged the island’s popularity. Before long, influencers and reality TV stars were showcasing Mykonos’ stunning sunsets, pristine beaches and hopping nightlife on “the Gram” for all to like and follow. Luxury fashion labels and lifestyle brands, as well as the island’s upscale resorts, restaurants and tourist attractions, collaborated with them to reach a global audience. Mykonos “blew up.”
But somehow, as social media reshaped the way we experience destinations, Mykonos managed to embrace the digital age while staying true to its cultural heritage. Traditional festivals and cultural events still coexist alongside TikTok-worthy moments, creating an exhilarating blend of old-world charm and modern glamor.
THE ISLAND FINDS ITS BALANCE
Today, the tourist industry in Mykonos has blossomed into a thriving and dynamic sector that is key to the island’s economy and cultural landscape. Always renowned for its stunning beaches, picturesque villages, and rich history, Mykonos has become one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean, attracting millions of visitors from around the world each year.
There is still every chance at spotting an A-list Hollywood star or Grammy-winning singer, but for most visitors, the island’s natural beauty, luxury accommodations, thriving nightlife, and world-class dining are the real stars. Traditional Greek culture is celebrated and reflected in every aspect of the thriving tourism trade.
And perhaps that’s the true magic of Mykonos. Fame has not changed her. It has only made her more attractive.
Lights, Camera, Mykonos!
It’s not surprising that an island with Mykonos’ natural beauty and attributes would end up getting its own Hollywood star turn. And in fact, Mykonos has been the setting for dozens of movies and TV shows. Here’s a curated list of some of the island’s most well-known appearances.
“THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE “(1961)

The movie depicts the love story of the Greek magnate Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy. Apparently, Quinn had originally declined to do the film, but according to IMDB’s trivia, he changed his mind after Kennedy snubbed him at a restaurant.
“SUMMER LOVERS” (1982)
This romantic drama follows the love triangle between a young American couple and a French woman they meet while vacationing on Mykonos.
“THE BIG BLUE” (1988)
Mykonos serves as one of the stunning locations in this cult classic about two competitive freedivers.
“SHIRLEY VALENTINE” (1989)

“THE BOURNE IDENTITY” (2002)
Starring Matt Damon, this action film has several scenes filmed on Mykonos featuring the iconic windmills and Little Venice area, where the last scenes of the movie are set.
The Greek Tycoon (1978)
“LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE” (2003)
Starring Angelina Jolie, this actionadventure film showcases Mykonos’ rugged coastline and historic landmarks.
“BRIDE WARS” (2009)

Bartenders across Petinos’ Resorts Of Mykonos get creative with fresh, vibrant cocktails that celebrate Greece.
BY GEOFF NUDELMAN
THERE ARE FEW THINGS MORE refreshing than a cold cocktail by the pool on a warm afternoon or a drink full of herbs and botanicals with dinner. Across Petinos’ Resorts, bartenders are rethinking what a great cocktail can be, all while paying homage to essential Greek spirits and flavors.
PETINOS’ RESORTS OF MYKONOS | ISSUE 01 2024
MYKONOS PETINOS’ OF
“We use a lot of Greek spirits in our cocktails,” says Saint John Hotel, Villas & Spa bartender Nikos Petkos, who has been with the property since 2011.
Famous spirits like ouzo (an aniseflavored spirit), tsipouro (a with or without anise flavored un-aged brandy) and mastiha (a more herbal spirit made from a specific evergreen tree) are featured on menus at each resort. For a bartender like Petkos, who works at a bar that can produce 200 mojitos a day, it’s important to have drinks on hand that are efficient and also delicious.
“You have to be consistent in quality for the guests,” he says.
Over at Blue Myth Restaurant at Petinos Hotel, where the wooden bar is backlit in blue with geometric shapes, bartender Alexandros Morales brings more than 20 years of experience into a range of signature cocktails that utilize flavors from across the country.
“I like the opportunity and freedom to create things,” he says. “I also like to think about how to make one taste work with another. It’s a lot of pressure but It’s a nice job, so that’s why I’ve done it for so long.”
Today, the range of cocktails on offer across Petinos’ Resorts are creative, exciting and most of all, delicious. They pair wonderfully with the traditional Greek fare found at the hotel restaurants, and are sure to leave you wanting more than one round. The following are a few favorites created by both Petkos and Morales.
Fresh Spirit
CREATED BY NIKOS PETKOS
AVAILABLE AT SAINT JOHN HOTEL, VILLAS & SPA BREEZE POOL BAR
50ml Hendricks
20ml Mastiha
15-20ml elderflower spirit
10ml cucumber syrup
Piece of cucumber for muddling
20ml lime juice
Use 3-4 spearmint leaves
This drink puts the botanicals of Hendricks and elderflower forward with the foresty goodness of mastica. Lime and cucumber help round out the drink overall. It’s the ideal drink for a lazy afternoon by the pool or paired with the restaurant’s Greek tortilla wrap with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, feta cheese, black olives & oregano.
Pink Mediterranean
CREATED BY ALEXANDROS MORALES
AVAILABLE AT BLUE MYTH RESTAURANT
Skinos Mastiha
Aperol
Grapefruit syrup
Lime juice
Basil
Basil and grapefruit is a classic flavor combination turned on its head with the addition of mastiha. In this cocktail, all of the flavor notes are mellowed out through the addition of Aperol, which brings another botanical layer to the mix. Overall, this is an effortless take on a traditional spritz that’s right at home for lunch, dinner or a night out.
Blood Goose
CREATED BY ALEXANDROS MORALES
AVAILABLE AT BLUE MYTH RESTAURANT
50ml Grey Goose vodka
40ml blackberry puree
30ml green apple puree
15ml hibiscus liqueur 10ml lime juice
Top with lemon-lime soda
Garnish with 2 dashes plum bitters and a few berries of choice
Decadence comes to life through the Blood Goose, which gets a rich red color from the blackberry puree, but layers an additional dimension with green apple and hibiscus. The drink is reminiscent of true tropical times as served in a hurricane glass with a long straw. It’s a great way to ease into the night or kick things up a level.
We use a lot of Greek spirits in our cocktails.

TYING the KNOT in MYKONOS
The mystical charm of this Greek island tantalizes both happy couples and wanderlust-filled guests.
BY JILLIAN DARA
It’s no wonder couples consistently seek out the Greek islands for a destination wedding: The spellbinding beauty of the Cyclades is illuminated by 300 days of sunshine a year and the Aegean Sea’s azure hues blend into the pastel sky to blur the horizon like a masterful watercolor that sets an otherworldly backdrop to tie the knot.
Of the 6,000 islands and islets rising from the Greek Seas — only 227 of which are inhabited — the allure of Mykonos has continuously flourished since it first trended with travelers in the early 1960s. Mykonos’ geometric, whitewashed facades against the deep blues of the waters surrounding ancient islands like Delos are charming, yet as the island’s built up, few uninterrupted stretches of coastal views remain.
Established in 2003, Saint John Hotel, Villas & Spa maintains access to an unparalleled stretch of 20,000 square meters that overlooks Agios Ioannis beach; a popular site for out-of-town couples searching for the quintessential postcard setting to exchange vows.

“Our venues are popular as they offer full sea views, allowing all guests to experience the breathtaking sunset firsthand,” says Popi Giannaraki from Saint John Hotel. For this reason, Giannaraki adds, typically couples will request their wedding to align with the sunset, allowing a refraction of light against the ivory buildings and a golden hue encompassing the newlyweds.
Saint John has been hosting weddings, corporate events and exhibitions (which all Petinos’ properties offer venues for) since its opening and was quickly revered for its efficient, all-encompassing events planning team that includes wedding coordinators, in-house catering, beauty center and floral specialist. Another quick-to-sell detail is the private chapel, Agia Fotini, that’s in style with the island’s traditional, cubic architecture. Topped by a sea-green bell, naturally weathered from the salty air of the coastal locale — of which can be adorned by florals upon request — the chapel seats 40 guests and welcomes larger weddings to make use of the standing room around the chapel to embrace the couple as they emerge as one after the ceremony. The cliffside platform overlooks Delos so the photo opportunity is priceless; exiting the intimate chapel to a crowd of loved ones surrounded by the magic of the Aegean.

PHOTOS
There’s also five other venues, including the restaurants and a pool deck that are most typically transformed for the reception — white-cloaked chairs and banquet tables, fairy lights, and candelabras draped with rose bouquets are an enchanting setting for everything from celebratory cocktails up to a fivecourse dinner.
Of course, when guests travel as far as Mykonos for a destination wedding, they expect more than a few hours of ceremony and reception, which is where Saint John shines. The hotel presents a combination of luxury accommodation, restaurants, beach access, shopping and a slew of activities that the property’s concierge can arrange, from wine tastings to a day on a yacht or horseback riding to cruising around the island via four-wheelers.
Perhaps a highlight for many attendees is the unity of accommodations. Saint John features 153 rooms, suites and exclusive villas, each with their own private pool, so whether the wedding is small-scale and the guests take over the villas or a more grandiose group, there are plenty of unique spaces for everyone to settle in for the days leading up to, and after, the wedding. A perk for the couple: If they secure bookings at the hotel for their guests, they receive a complimentary night in the honeymoon suite.
A Mykonos wedding is truly a win-win for the newlyweds and their guests who will undoubtedly find “enchanted” is an understatement for the overwhelming beauty of Greece’s most famous island.
