Resources Real Estate has been named to the 2016

list of the fastest-growing private companies in America. Resources Real Estate was ranked on Inc. magazine’s 34th annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy — America’s independent entrepreneurs. Companies such as Yelp, Pandora, Timberland, Dell, Chobani, Oracle, Microsoft, Vizio, Intuit, Zappos.com, LinkedIn, Zillow, and many other wellknown names gained early exposure as members of the Inc. 5000. Making the Inc 5000 list denotes a rapid revenue growth over a four-year period. The average company on last year’s list achieved an incredible threeyear growth of 490%. In the last four years, Resources Real Estate expanded the number of its office locations from one to four, and tripled the roster of its agents. Announcing the company’s inclusion in the list, Inc. Editor in Chief Eric Schurenberg said, “For 35 years, Inc. has welcomed the fastest-growing private companies in America into a very exclusive club. On average, the companies on the list have grown almost five-fold over the last three years.” “This recognition is quite an achievement,” said Thomas McCormack, Managing Partner at Resources Real Estate. “Our tremendous growth in

Methodology of the Inc. 5000 list The 2016 Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2011 to 2015. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2011. They had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent — not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies — as of December 31, 2015. Companies on the Inc. 500 are featured in Inc.’s September issue.

We purposely expanded during the downturn, as we understood that if we could establish the infrastructure of a multi-office company, we would be better prepared once the market picked up again. This served us well: during this period we were also able to train our agents so that when their business took off they were prepared as well.” “We believe Resources is more than a full-service brokerage,” said Carolynn Ozar-Diakon, Senior Partner and Broker. “All of our associates work cooperatively to meet the needs of our residential and commercial clients across all levels of the real estate market. Customer service has been a major focus for us. We have been more concerned with the high quality services we provide rather than having a specific growth strategy and I think this has helped us attract top talent and has contributed to our growth. Thomas McCormack listed additional reasons for the firm’s success: “Over the past year and a half we have also seen improvement in our local markets. We identified under-served markets and opened offices to specifically focus on these communities. We found this hyper local approach has resonated greatly with local residents. In addition, we spend a great deal of energy fine-tuning and improving our marketing — something for which we have been recognized. with independent luxury brokers from across the globe to acquire new ideas as well as build referral networks.” Carolynn Ozar-Diakon added: “We believe in doing the right thing by people. Agent training is a fundamental step for our firm. We have both new agent training as well as career development for more experienced agents. Confidence stays strong both from our clients and our agents, and business develops out of that confidence. Our growth is steady, and a strong part of our plan is not to get too big and lose teamwork and high standards.”

“On average, the companies on the list have grown almost five-fold over the last three years.” The full Inc. 5000 ranking will be unveiled during the annual Inc. 5000 event honoring all the companies on the list. The event will be held from October 18 through 20, 2016 in San Antonio, TX. Speakers include some of the greatest entrepreneurs of this and past generations, such as Tony Robbins, #1 NY Times best selling author, entrepreneur and peak performance strategist. Abe Lincoln Had Roots in Shrewsbury. Honest?

by Rick Geffken

Surprisingly, relatives of our 16th President once owned a home in the Borough of Shrewsbury. Forbearers of the revered Abraham Lincoln not only lived hereabouts, but his family history is deeply woven into the fabric of Monmouth County. If that’s not enough to get your attention, here’s something else. An astute observer might be able to own a Lincoln ancestral residence. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the original Shrewsbury Township — which ranged from the Navesink River to Little Egg Harbor — was continually subdivided into many of the smaller towns and villages we live in today. The intersection of Broad Street and Sycamore Avenue came to be known as The Four Corners. Those cross streets — defined by the Allen House, Christ Church, the Quaker Meeting House, and the Wardell estate — were the very center of Shrewsbury Town. Homes sprouted up along these crucial thoroughfares connecting Freehold to Rumson, Middletown to Eatontown. The people who built and lived

in those homes have instantly recognizable Monmouth County names like Lippincott, Allen, Sickles, Corlies, Holmes and Parker. Other early settlers, like the Salters, are less commonly known, but nonetheless played a significant role in building our nascent communities. Richard Salter was a prosperous lawyer who invested in bogiron mills in East New Jersey before Monmouth County was even named. He brought two experienced iron workers down from Massachusetts, Mordecai and Abraham Lincon (sic), to work his businesses. The former married Richard’s daughter Hannah

The 200 year-old Saltar house at 481 Sycamore Avenue in Shrewsbury was once owned by relatives of Abraham Lincoln. The second residence on the property, at the end of the driveway, is a converted barn, formerly the Shrewsbury Dairy. 732.212.0440 16 resourcesrealestate.com

Mordecai Lincon, 2nd great grandfather of Abraham Lincoln, married Hannah Saltar. Her nieces and nephew lived in Shrewsbury.

around 1714. The Lincons lived in Cream Ridge near Mordecai’s blacksmith shop for a few years. Three generations later, after the family was part of the western expansion of the country, the future president was Kentucky born in 1809. Richard Salter’s grandchildren, William Saltar (an alternative family spelling) and later his sister Margaret owned 481 Sycamore Avenue in Shrewsbury in the 1850s. For a time, three of her sisters lived there with Margaret. It’s uncertain if any of these Saltars knew about their relationship to President Abraham Lincoln. It’s even less likely they ever met him. Admittedly, the connection of the Shrewsbury house to one of the most respected presidents in United States history is thin, but it’s real. The Saltar siblings and Honest Abe were second cousins, twice removed, and both branches of the family shared common Monmouth County heritage. Built in the 1820s, the house at 481 Sycamore Avenue is now on the market. If, in fact, Saltars built this house, they did it with a prescient look at how we live today. It retains much of its 19th century architectural charms, noticeably the original, wide plank floors throughout. Three of four fireplaces were installed in unusually spacious bedrooms with closets. Of course, succeeding owners modernized the home. The screened-in back porch offers privacy while overlooking a tree-lined gravel driveway. The detached two-car garage with loft, added in recent years, replicates the look and feel of the original home. A 400 foot-deep lot affects an appealing country retreat close to modern shopping amenities on Broad Street and Shrewsbury Avenues. There’s more rich history to the property besides its association with the Saltars and Lincoln. Alfred and Carrie Grover bought the premises, by then an eleven room house, in 1905. Grover’s were among the first families to migrate to Middletown from resourcesrealestate.com

Long Island in the 1660s. Alfred was a tenth generation Grover living in Monmouth County. Alfred Grover owned and operated the Shrewsbury Dairy from a barn behind his Sycamore home for a number of years. His drivers would pick up milk in ten gallon cans in the early afternoons from Colts Neck and Tinton Falls farmers. After processing the raw milk overnight, Grover and his men would deliver a thousand quarts a day to more than 300 customers in Shrewsbury and Red Bank. Grover sold the dairy business in 1920 and converted his former dairy barn to a six-room bungalow with modern improvements and hardwood floors. A year later the Grovers moved out of the front house, rented it, and took up residence in the bungalow. When the Borough of Shrewsbury was formed in 1926, Alfred became the first Tax Assessor in Shrewsbury, a position he held for eight years. After Alfred Grover died in 1939, his widow lived in their home for another 20 years. The historic houses at 481 Sycamore Avenue, currently owned by the Doelger family are listed for sale In a nod to repeating Grover history, the late Richard Doelger switched homes with his daughter’s family when he moved into the back house. The three bedroom bungalow is now tenant occupied. Only a few existing buildings in 350 year-old Shrewbury carry as much of the town’s legacy as does the Saltar house. New owners, stretching the truth just a bit and crossing their fingers, could always invite their overnight guests to sleep in the “Lincoln Bedroom.”

A Treat For All The Senses:

The Memphis Pig Out

Beautiful flowers and plants surround the entrance inviting you in. The hickory smoke aroma envelopes you. Finger-licking-good ribs and chicken covered in sauce await you. Taste buds explode. And all around you people exclaim “This is sooooo good.” Welcome to The Memphis Pig Out, a staple of Atlantic Highlands where all your senses come alive. More than 30 years ago, Mark and Connie Strassburg arrived in Atlantic Highlands with the intention of introducing Memphisstyle regional cooking to the Bayshore area. The specialties of the house are ribs and chicken cooked over hickory similar to the way it’s been done in Memphis for hundreds of years. Radio personality Joan Hamburg has said they are the best ribs in New Jersey. If ribs aren’t your style, there is an array of seafood and Black Angus steaks. All but a few items are prepared in-house according to southern family recipes in use for many generations. The original intent was to offer generous portons at reasonable prices so a customer could “pig out” but a funny thing happened along the way. In additon to their core customers, they developed 732.212.0440 20 resourcesrealestate.com

a faithful following of vegetarians and calorie counters. A 40-item salad bar can be a meal in itself or accompanied by vegetarian lasagna or grilled chicken. Just when you think there is no more room for food, it’s dessert time! The Memphis Pig Out’s catch phrase is “life is uncertain, eat dessert first.” Delicacies like Tennessee hot fudge cake and fresh strawberry pie are among the offerings. Gourmet magazine even requested the strawberry pie recipe for inclusion in their publication. Catering and a private party room are available.

Where Did All Those Pigs Come From?

Mark and Connie have a goal of providing wonderful food in a whimsical homey atmosphere. And the service is fast an friendly. As a family restaurant, they are kid friendly. They have high chairs, booster chairs, crayons, their own version of chicken nuggets and very strong vacuum cleaners. There is also vodka for the parents.

They had only 1 piece of pig art when they opened. Then one of the customers who was a cabinet maker made the 8 foot wooden pig that graces the wall in the front dining room...From there it escalated!

According to Connie the most fun part of running the Memphis Pig Out is “getting ‘in the zone’ on a busy Saturday night. Tickets coming in; food going out. The grill is loaded with meat, fries bubbling away. Fierce concentration! Lose your focus and all the balls fall out of the air!”

The wild boar head over the salad bar was a gift from a couple who (well, the wife anyway) didn’t want it in their dining room anymore. Three carousel pigs came from a carved wooden Indian collector in Sussex who had to buy an entire collection to get the pieces he wanted. So he sold the pig portion of the collection to Connie and Mark.

Oh and as a side note, not only is Connie an excellent chef but she is also the creative talent behind the gorgeous floral arrangements outside the restaurant.

Their collection includes Porky Pig cell art, “A portrait of a pig” by Jamie Wyeth, pig weathervanes and hundreds of pigs donated to them by customers.

“After being here 32 years, we are meeting the grandchildren of original customers,” Mark said. “Serving our customers through all phases of their lives is immensely satisfying.”

One wooden carousel pig came from a playground in Czechoslovakia and was a gift from a Toms River collector.

But, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Mark and Connie have decided to pass the torch... or in this case... the barbecue lighter. This landmark restaurant is being offered for sale. The new owners can purchase the building and start their own dream or carry on the legend of The Memphis Pig Out.

& Project Write Now Jennifer Chauhan and Allison Tevald are the co-founders of Project Write Now, a nonprofit organization in Red Bank dedicated to building a vibrant writing community and helping people of all ages become better writers.

Tell us about Project Write Now. We are a grassroots organization created and run by a group of people passionate about giving everyone opportunities to write and tell their stories. We have a studio on the West Side of Red Bank where we offer a range of writing workshops for children, teens and adults. For children, our goal is to show them that writing can be fun and meaningful. Our adults come in for a lot of different reasons — some say they have a book inside of them; others are working through difficult experiences. Some have been “closet writers” and just need a safe space to share their work with other writers and get feedback. We find ways to reach writers of all ages and abilities. What is your Literacy Outreach Program? When we launched in the fall of 2014, we knew a big part of our work would be giving back to the community. Since then, we’ve partnered with schools and mission-based organizations to provide writing workshops, which can be one day or once a week for several weeks. Our services include tutoring for 732.212.0440 26 resourcesrealestate.com

the GED, help with cover letters and resumes and college essay support. We are able to offer many of our workshops and services for free to those in need thanks to the support of our donors. What has been the biggest surprise? The discoveries that happen for all of our students — no matter their ages — as they write and share their stories. They realize that they have something important to say. And the connections that form and the empathy that is generated as participants listen to one another’s words. It’s also the discoveries we experience as instructors — we’ve been changed by the work we do and it inspires us to want to give more. We feel privileged that our students open up and trust us with their stories. We are also honored by how we’ve been embraced by the community and the partnerships we’ve been able to make. Some of the organizations we are fortunate to work with include The Source at Red Bank Regional High School, The Community YMCA, Lunch Break, Shore House, Second Life Bikes in Asbury Park, Family Based Services Association, Count Basie Theatre, Two River Theater, the Red Bank Public Library and Red Bank Middle School. Tell us about your work at Red Bank Middle School. Since January 2015, we have been offering weekly

resourcesrealestate.com

writing workshops to 7th and 8th graders in their AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. We came in not knowing what to expect. We knew we wanted to give students a safe place and the freedom to write creatively. They blew us away with their willingness to open up and share their thoughts and feelings in their writing and with one another. We’ve witnessed so many transformations in our students, especially in how they feel about writing. They’ve come to see it as a meaningful practice that can help them make sense of who they are and their place in the world. What prompted you to create an afterschool program? Our students at Red Bank Middle School were asking for more so last February we launched “The Studio.” They come after school two days a week. They do their homework, have a snack and then we lead them in a writing activity. Actually our teen interns have been doing more and more of the leading, which has been wonderful. We will be launching an online literary magazine, which the students have titled Bridge Ink, in the fall. The inaugural issue will feature their work and then we will open it up for submissions. Any upcoming plans for fall? We have a lot planned, including a new round of sixweek workshops, one-day writing retreats and events, including a “How to Publish” series. We are starting a Writers Network and are planning an open house for current and new adult students on Monday, Oct. 3, to gather writers to find out what their needs are.
