John Lollos
Humor is everywhere. So says John Lollos, actor, director, playwright, musician and producer, who has been bringing laughs and entertainment to people for decades, often behind the scenes. Throughout his career, the Atlantic Highlands resident has written and/or produced over 1,000 TV programs, documentaries and plays, and continues to share his creativity and talents with audiences. “I tell young people looking for a partner: forget the bank account,” he says. “Make sure they have a sense of humor.” Humor is second nature to Lollos, whose storied career brought the 1970s Saturday Night Live phenomenon “Mr. Bill” satire on the air, produced the Howard Stern syndicated television series and reunited long-feuding comedic icons Mel Brooks and Sid Caesar for a historic TV reunion, among other accomplishments.

was responsible for staging an infamous on-camera stunt where Ed Ames, who played a Native-American on the TV show Daniel Boone, pitched his tomahawk at the outlined drawing of a man. The hatchet landed directly in the drawing’s crotch, resulting in a collective audience howl that can still be found on TV highlights. “I believe it still holds the record for the longest sustained laugh in the history of The Tonight Show.’ Lollos, son of Greek immigrants, was born and raised in a Newark suburb, although he says, “I’ve never grown up.” While attending Upsala College in East Orange with designs on law school, everything changed when Lollos landed a role in his first production, a Moliere play. “I had never heard of Moliere,” he says. “And it was in verse!”
“A teacher once told me that comedy is hard because you must get 200 people to inhale in unison so they can laugh on the exhale,” he said.
Lollos was hooked. He changed his major to theater. “When I told my mother, she asked incredulously in Greek: With a mouth like that you’re not going to be a lawyer?”
Surprise has been a frequent element in Lollos’ career. When booking talent for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Lollos

one of Lollos’ passion. “I love sailing,” he says. “It’s the harnessing of the power of nature that is a real thrill. You harness the wind with your skill, you see the storms rising. It’s invigorating.” Ever since, Lollos and Ginger have been an important part of the Atlantic Highlands community, especially the town’s arts community. Ginger was the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council’s first president and they were both honored last year at a festive red-carpet affair at the Copper Canyon restaurant. “The town has been developing a great number of people in the arts – fine arts, painters, writers,” says Lollos. It’s a charming spot to live and work. It’s got everything.” The couple has also been instrumental in the ever-increasingly successful FilmOneFest, the annual event that brings droves of people to town each summer for a festival of one-minute films. They have also played host at their home overlooking Sandy Hook Bay as part of the Living Room Concert series, which features guest musicians in intimate gatherings. From his living room piano, Lollos can see Manhattan where he has enjoyed much of his professional success. Starting at NBC as a page in the early 60’s, Lollos eventually was named a vice president at 27. After his NBC career, Lollos branched out on his own as a producer creating a laundry list of recognized works, including an Emmy-award nominated PBS production of The Cradle Will Rock with John Houseman and Patti LuPone, The

Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar Re-Union,”and the comedy Mr. Goldwyn, which he wrote and was produced on Broadway. “It was great to see it up there,” Lollos says of the production that featured Alan King as the old-time, cigar-smoking Samuel Goldwyn. “He was tough,” Lollos says of working with King. “We debated over every line.” Lollos just completed writing and directing a documentary film Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholom Aleichem, which is now appearing in over 20 film festivals around the world and will soon be shown in New York City. His most recent play, Call of Nature, is a seven-character “screwball” comedy about the surprisingly different ways people fall in love, which he plans to bring to the stage. When they’re not working on arts projects at home, Lollos and
Ginger, a speech pathologist, take the 45-minute ferry ride from town across to Manhattan for theater and arts events or to spend time with their son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren in New York City.

Tell us about your business. I’ve been in the home construction business for about 23 years and about 19 years ago we started K Shaw Construction. We wanted to be a smaller-sized home builder with a focus on detail and a better sense of what works in the shore area. You live in Monmouth Beach and many of the homes you build are located there. What do you think is uniquely special about Monmouth Beach? What’s special? The people. The community. My wife, Danielle, and I have lived here for more than 15 years. We’ve raised our son and twin daughters here. It is a unique, small, shore town. We love Monmouth Beach. Would you say you have a particular style? I love the “Seashore-style” which I identify with traditional cedar shake, white painted interior trim, warm wood floors and a beach-y feel. It’s a relaxed, comfortable design that works perfectly at the shore. What’s most important to you personally in building a house? Quality — but not just for the obvious things that show. I believe in quality from footings to finish work. Of course, I love a well-appointed kitchen and beautiful ceiling treatments but we’re all about quality from the bones of the house to the final coat of paint. 18

Are there specific materials that you prefer working with? There’s an eco-friendly lumber product called Eco Red Shield. I think in ten years it will be the only lumber that builders will be using. You pay an average of about 10% more but it resists mold, insects, even fire. Normally, when lumber comes to a house, it’s been sitting on an open rail car cross country, then sits outside in the lumber yard, it’s then delivered to a job site and all this time it’s out in the weather. Of course once the house is enclosed it eventually dries out. But this new lumber is coated so there are no mildew or mold issues. And the fire safety it offers is incredible. How do you think home building has changed post-Sandy? I think Superstorm Sandy and its aftermath helped educate people on the benefits of building more defensively and more green. They have a greater understanding of how the way they build their home can impact their lives and their communities. They want their homes built better so they perform better. Many of these choices also lead to significant savings in things like utilities over a lifetime in a home. I’m sure Sandy must have impacted you in many ways. Sandy was traumatic for everyone, myself included. Working ’round the clock, sometimes spinning our wheels fighting insurance companies... It was a very

trying time. The bright spots were the people who were so overwhelmingly thankful for what we were able to do in the timeframe we had available. Do you have a favorite local charity? About eight years ago, a bunch of us started Shore-toHelp, an organization working to raise funds for local charities. It began when we organized a Thanksgiving Day football game. What started as a simple morning of fun evolved into an annual event with nearly 300 participants through the years and more than $150,000 raised for local charities. We’ve raised funds for many worthy charities including Sandy victims. This past year, we raised money for Mary’s Place By The Sea, a retreat for women fighting cancer, helping them heal their mind, body and soul. Is there a particularly impressive project you’ve worked on? Our projects on River Avenue and Navesink Drive in Monmouth Beach are impressive each in their own unique way. I am a perfectionist. From the exterior design and color choices, the flow, the finishes I like to be involved with it all. I work closely with our talented designer Betsy Murphy and my operations manager Brian Micioni to make sure that every detail of our homes have been well thought out.
