Small Town, Flavors Big Porcini
Chris Atamian doesn’t do a lot of waiting when it comes to food. When he was in 8th grade and his mother had to push back dinner because of her work hours, he took over making family meals. Before long, he was a better cook than his mom. Years later when he met Alexandria Mahon while working as a chef at the much beloved Bay Avenue Trattoria, they knew that they would open up a restaurant together. They didn’t wait very long. Alexandria and Chris opened Porcini in July 2015, a charming Italian American restaurant located in Highlands, just a few blocks away from the restaurant where they first met and a short walk to the ocean. “Everything’s homemade,” said Alexandria, who manages the front of the house and is one of the restaurant’s servers. “All of our pasta. All of our desserts. It’s our passion and attention to details that make Porcini so intimate.” Indeed, intimate is the word that most aptly describes Porcini. With just 15 tables, this bistro is bathed in warm candlelight and exudes a cozy, homey feel. 732.212.0440 24 resourcesrealestate.com
“Eating here should be like eating at home with elevated comfort food,” Alexandria said. Indeed, to Alexandria and Chris, everyone who enters into Porcini is family. The many regular customers are always remembered and the staff are encouraged to make everyone feel special. A believer in the adage “food is love,” Chris adds passion as well as fine ingredients into everything he makes. All the seafood is fresh and locally sourced. In summer, Alexandria and Chris visit local farmer’s markets in Sea Bright and Highlands returning with big, juicy New Jersey tomatoes and other fresh produce to cook and serve. Chris describes his cooking style as “simple foods with bold flavors.” He carries this out by having a short menu so he can perfect each and every dish. An especially popular entree is the pork osso bucco, served with a sweet potato hash and finished in maple whiskey sauce. Chris also recommends anything he prepares with porcini, the mushroom that’s so wonderfully flavorful that he and Alexandria named the restaurant after it. Although the restaurant’s cuisine is Italian American, Chris tries to mix other cultures into his food, as well. Recently, he’s been infusing Asian flavors into the menu,

incorporating it subtly, such as a crab cake dish that comes with an Asian slaw. Another favorite to keep an eye out for is the cheesecake special: the flavor changes every day and the dessert is so good, guests often ask the type of cheesecake before they even request the dinner menu. “My personal favorite is the s’mores cheesecake,” Alexandria said with a smile. “It’s a chocolate flavored cheesecake with a marshmallow covering — which we torch — and a graham cracker bottom.” If you’re looking to meet some new and wonderful people and enjoy some bustle, Alexandria said Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm are Porcini’s most popular times. Coming around 8:30pm on any day, particularly Sunday, will result in a more leisurely, quiet meal. “We recommend that you call about a week in advance to make a reservation,” she said. “Our home-like setting fills up quickly, and you want to be guaranteed a space!” The couple are getting married in five months and hope one day to pass the restaurant down to their kids. For Alexandria and Chris, everything revolves around the idea of family at Porcini and they can’t wait to welcome more friends to their table.
