Crowin Linson Commission
Featured in “Stickley’s Craftsman Homes” by Ray Stubblemine (Gibbs-Smith/Parchment Press) Another elongated house with a sophisticated and elegant design, the Corwin Linson commission in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, is an illustration of how preliminary plans could get changed before the actual construction. Between the publishing of the drawings as a Craftsman Horne Building Company advertisement in April 1909 and the construction that summer, it was decided to rotate the house 90 degrees so that the long part of the horne faced the top of the slope and the plans were reversed so that the front and side of the illustration became the rear and side. The rear of the house now faced the view of the Atlantic Ocean off to the northeast. Linson was a New York City artist who traveled every summer, so he wanted the home to be designed not only for his own use, “but also to the usual requirements of the tenant who wants to rent a handsome and roomy house for the summer season. It is with this in view that the house is to be made practically indestructible, the concrete construction with hollow walls guarding against fire and the furnishing and interior woodwork being of the most substantial character:’ The foundation up to the first floor is fieldstone found on the site. “The upper walls are of concrete, built according to

the latest improved method, which is currently known as ‘Ham’s Method; because it was invented by William Deane Ham of Knoxville, Tennessee. This form of concrete construction is interesting enough to merit some description because it not only gives two solid walls which are practically monoliths tied together at intervals of fifteen inches, both vertically and horizontally, with iron or copper ties, but also because it does away with the costly and cumbersome 282 wooden molds which are growing more and more expensive as the price of lumber increases and which are useless after the walls are built. No one denies the desirability of air spacing in either block or monolithic construction, for the fact that the hollow wall insures coolness in summer, warmth in winter and dryness in all seasons has long been established. The only question at any time has been as to the best, most economical and most practical method of building hollow concrete walls, and the use of steel molds, which is the distinguishing feature of this method, seems to have solved it. The molds are made interchangeable so that they may be used upon building after building, and another marked advantage is that any desired finish, from the perfectly smooth surface to the roughest pebbledash, may easily be obtained by this method.

Nicholas Harary
You can’t call Nicholas Harary the new kid on the block anymore. Despite his youthful looks or that he arrived on the culinary scene less than 20 years ago as the Culinary Institute of America’s youngest graduate with barely a dime in his pocket, a pot full of newly enacted credit cards, and ambition that couldn’t be beat, Nicholas has proven his success. Fifteen years after its opening, Restaurant Nicholas, the award-winning high-end Red Bank dining establishment that Nicholas and his wife Melissa created, continues to grow and delight the palates of diners near and far. The man behind the stove and his vision continues to work 70hour weeks, blending his passions – family, work and the New York Giants. Bronx-born and Jersey-bred since age 9, Nicholas got his start as a dishwasher in a neighborhood pizzeria where he got the taste of culinary dreams. He was inspired by the cook who offered Nicholas the best advice: “ ‘Don’t be like me,’ he told me. ‘Or you’ll wind up in the back of kitchen making baked ziti when you’re 50.’ “ 10

At 17 he graduated from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) but most of the knowledge he attained about the craft, he says, was learned working in restaurants, mostly for minimum wages. “I learned from old European men in the kitchen, with an oldschool approach,” he said. “I learned about hard work. I watched everything. What to do, how to treat the staff — respectfully.” He went on to train in kitchens on the East and West Coasts, at high-end restaurants and even at wineries, gaining experience in the kitchen, dining room, vineyards and in management. In New York, Nicholas continued his education and became a sommelier. “I wrote a lot of recipes and formulated a business plan,” he says. “From the time I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to open a restaurant.” In 2000, Nicholas and Melissa, his partner in life and business since 1994 when they met working in a restaurant, hatched a novel credit card plan: they saved the unsolicited credit card offers that came in the mail and cashed them all in at the same time. The $250,000 credit, as well as a small business loan, enabled them to create Restaurant Nicholas. They paid it all off in one year, he says. search all available homes at resourcesrealestate.com
In Red Bank, he says, they found an affluent area far enough from New York City but close enough to attract people who dined in the city and understood fine dining. Within months of opening, they had a 4-star review and he says, it was obvious Restaurant Nicholas was a success. Five years later, it was named one of three New Jersey restaurants to ever receive a 4-star rating from the New York Times and a stellar Zagat rating. “We were reaching our goals two years into it.” Nicholas and Melissa pride themselves in quality food and especially creating a special place for people to dine and enjoy themselves. Loyal customers return to celebrate engagements, birthdays, anniversaries and other milestones. “That’s what I do – create memories,” he said. In 2006 Nicholas opened Bar N in the restaurant, featuring cocktails, a la carte menu and desserts, with the same quality food and servers. In 2012 Nicholas Wines, an online shopping venture, was created.
Nicholas admits his passion gets the best of him when celebrating his team. “I used to be known as a yeller and screamer in the kitchen,” he says. But nowadays almost all his whoops and hollers are directed at his favorite team’s antics on the field. Over the years, Nicholas’ disposition may have mellowed, but his ardor for his family and his craft have never wavered.
“ ‘Don’t be like me,’ he told me. ‘Or you’ll wind up in the back of the kitchen making baked ziti when you’re 50.’ ” “I think I’ve learned to worry less about what people are thinking,” he says. More important in life are values. “I believe if you say you’re going to do it, do it,” he says. “Your word is everything. “
The business continues to grow and thrive, and the couple blend business, family and community involvement as best they can. That often includes meals with their children – Juliana, 6, and Nicholas, 8 — at the restaurant, or dashing out to watch the kids’ soccer games.
He relishes the quiet time that comes with running – 35 miles a week – and works out six days a week. On those days he’ll maintain a rigid diet, eating six meals a day, every two hours. “And one day a week – look out.” Although he says he doesn’t eat junk food, he admits to craving pizza.
A devoted New York Giants fan, Nicholas has attended three of the team’s Super Bowl games, including the 1990 Tampa game when he was only 16 years old and got himself to Florida to scalp a lone ticket.
“And on occasion I’ll eat a cheese steak or a hot dog,” says the chef who creates a seared foie gras or roasted Atlantic halibut that make diners’ mouths water. “But it’ll have to be a really good one!”

The cottage that once housed the superintendent who tended the vast Rohallion estate is on the market for $2,195,000 million. The caretaker’s home at 2 N. Rohallion Drive, with its gambrel roof, massive boiler in the basement and adjacent dairy house, was once part of the 64-acre turnof-the-century estate designed by McKim, Mead & White. The estate has since been subdivided several times, and today the center hall colonial is on 1.5 acres. It was rescued from neglect by former owners who recognized its good bones “It was in shambles,� said Robert Baxter, the 12

present owner. “The people that restored it did so in late 1958 or ’59. Before that, it was not cared for.” Since then it has been developed into a four-bedroom, three-bath house, re-sided with cedar shakes like the original, and landscaped with a pool and decking. The back of the house has become the front, for easier access to the road. The freestanding dairy house, where milk and eggs were kept cool within 18” thick masonry walls, has been re-built and reimagined, as a home office and rec room. “It’s not at all like your cookie-cutter McMansions so prevalent today,” said search all available homes at resourcesrealestate.com

Nicholas McCabe, who grew up next to the property, and now, as a real estate agent, finds himself showing it to future buyers whom he hopes will keep it intact as a link to the days of Rumson’s great estates. “You can feel this is an older home that has been loved and maintained,” he said. Hidden from view at the end of a cul-de-sac, the property has been a stop on local home and garden tours and the address for some memorable tent parties. Locals recall the Baxter’s Gypsy party, with belly dancers and fortunetellers, and the campy Gilligan’s Island theme-party, a nod to the actress Natalie Schafer. Schafer played “Lovey” Howell, the millionaire’s wife, on Gilligan’s Island, and was a guest at the cottage when it was owned by the Schafer family, prior to the Baxters. “It was a very happy place,” said Baxter. “Everyone, when we bought the place, inevitably said, ‘Oh, I was at a party there.’ ” Now that son Andrew is grown and his days on Wall Street are over, Baxter and wife Diane will move to a house they’ve built in Vermont for their retirement. He said he has hopes the house with the Rumson roots will continue to be treasured. “I hope another family comes in here and they love it and they have kids and they have lots of parties,” he said.

Over the past 18 years in Rumson, when he and his wife drove around town and saw big, beautiful trees being cut down for new houses, they made a point to plant a new tree on their property in response. “Sequoia, copper beech, tulip trees – wonderful hardwood trees that will be magnificent for 300 years,” said Baxter. “That is the same thing I hope for the building.”
