Years ago, a Veterans Affairs cemetery needed to beautify its grounds. A water and sanitation district in Colorado Springs hired us to design a booster station to deliver water to the cemetery. Now, its grass is green. Later, housing construction in the same area began. Existing water pressure zones often require upgrades to booster stations when communities expand. RESPEC’s water experts joined forces with our facilities engineers to ensure every new home would have water. We upgraded the booster station by completing the electrical, mechanical, HVAC, drainage, grading, and erosion-control designs. Because RESPEC works united, colleagues and clients get more.

Collecting data is easy. Making something of it is challenging. Recently, RESPEC made data understandable for a water district in Southern California. It provides water to 19 million people and supports nearby irrigation. Balancing the water supply requires assessing countless variables and relying on trustworthy solutions. Synthesizing information is RESPEC’s forte. We developed an app to analyze a part of the district. Now, evaluating water usage is easy. Via maps, charts, and tables, our app tracks what the crops need versus what they surrender, allowing the district to conserve water. RESPEC empowers clients to use water wisely so that access remains available for all.

We recently submitted our first permit application to the EPA for underground injection. RESPEC creates models that numerically simulate where CO2 plumes will migrate and build up pressure. Once we submit permits, drilling can begin. We simplify the process by offering practical solutions for execution, regulatory approval, and risk mitigation. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is one of RESPEC’s longest- served sites. Our involvement there opened the doors for our infrastructure engineers. When salt damaged a steel beam in the loading facility’s salt shaft pocket, which was 2,000 feet underground, our structural, civil, and geotechnical experts came to the rescue. They designed a new pocket for WIPP’s loading facility. Most companies would simply recommend replacing the beam, but RESPEC knows the pressure surrounding the structure will cause damage again. Because of RESPEC’s experience, we know how to design structures that withstand deformation by incorporating adjustable bulkheads and yieldable supports.

Using drones with design software improves clients’ solutions. Drones’ vantage points and access allow everyone to better understand, prepare for, and wrap up projects. Recently, we used this technology to optimize blasting operations at a mine in Oregon, helping a client to achieve ideal fragmentation since, in mining, size matters. After blasts, materials travel from trucks to crushers to conveyors. When fragments are too big or too small, efficiency decreases and costs increase. The images our drones capture can be analyzed for 3D-profiling and borehole alignment and be reviewed to identify muckpiles. RESPEC empowers our clients to use technology to get the best bang for the buck — in many cases, literally.

Analyze Mitigation efforts

When land is developed in the United States, the effect on its waters must be assessed. If impacted, mitigation must occur. In Kentucky, a developer can oversee the process or enter a fee-in-lieu-of (FILO) agreement, allowing the state to oversee it. Kentucky wanted certainty that its FILO mitigations were effective and brought on RESPEC to conduct an after-action review for its eastern region. Our local presence often opens the door, and our after-action reviews can evaluate what is and isn’t working. Now, Kentucky can revamp its criteria and ensure clean water. When it comes to keeping our environment healthy, RESPEC’s capabilities let us help anyone, anywhere.
