Cone V2 ‘Cone v2‘ is an interactive and kinetic architectural sculpture by German architectural graduates Manuel Kretzer and Hans Sachs. The installation was one of the main attractions at the 2009 ‘Voodoo Experience‘ Music Festival in New Orleans, USA. (www.thevoodooexperience.com) From mid November 2009 until mid January 2010 the piece was further exhibited at the Botanical Gardens in New Orleans, USA.

‘Cone v2‘ is an improved version of the ‘Cone‘ which was part of the 2007 ‘Burning Man Festival‘ in the desert of Nevada. The nine meter high structure is made of a two layer framework, according to the principals of Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov. The inner cone is fixed to a 70cm high base platform, which includes the entrance to the installation from below. The outer cone is rotary attached to the top of the inner one and a bottom rail on the outer edge of the platform.

Ensuring this flexible bearing the outer structure can be turned by man and wind power around the static inner one. Due to the filigree lattice construction method this overlap of layers creates an atmospheric interference effect. Especially the space inside of the ‘Cone‘ suggests the impression of being in a giant machine.

The main features of the revised version are a new design and materiality of the ring elements. Custom made aluminum pieces ensure a simpler, faster and reusable system that can be rapidly installed at different places.

To emphasize the rotation effect and make illumination part of the installation an interactive lighting system was developed by David McCallum and Allan Day in Toronto. An Arduino micro controller connected to Hall Effect sensors measured direction and speed of the spinning structure and then transferred the signal via DMX to 12 high power led bars in 36 segments attached to the base platform. The equally spread light allows for a complete illumination and the existing interference effect is accentuated at night.
