Chick ‘n‘ Egg Chair Chick ‘n‘ Egg Chair is a lightweight seating furniture made entirely from corrugated cardboard. It was designed and developed at the Chair of CAAD, ETH Zürich by Manuel Kretzer. The form was completely 3D modelled in McNeel Rhino and then further processed in Grasshopper. The parametric setup allows the piece to be rescaled to any desired size, resolution and material strength. Although the chair was initially designed for kids it can easily be adjusted. So far two versions have been cut and built - one for small children and another one for grown ups.

The algorithm to compute the necessary cutting paths is relatively simple. The 3D model is scanned and a simple grid projected onto the surface. This grid is extruded to meet the desired material strength and then intersections and connection slots are determined. To increase stability and to generate a more homogenous seating surface, the second set of slices lies perpendicular to the center line of the model.

Version 2

This method can be used for any continuous surface and will adjust automatically.

The resulting parts are arranged on a flat surface and can be processed on a cardboard cutting plotter or laser cutter.

The kids version of the chair (42 x 51 x 57 cm, sitting height: 20 cm) ships on 8 cardboard sheets (80 x 60 cm) and weights 5.5 kg. The adult version (75 x 85 x 90 cm, sitting height: 35 cm) ships on 17 sheets (90 x 90 cm) and weights 11 kg.

Leaving the parts in their sheets protects them from damage during transportation. As most parts are different they are all labeled directly by the machine. The user assembles the chair by pushing the parts from the sheets and slide them together according to the explanations on the following pages.

If the chairs are supposed to become permanent pieces of furniture it is encouraged to glue certain parts to prevent unwanted sliding of the parts.
