BID launches radio network to tackle city retail crime

Retail Birmingham is the Business Improvement District (BID) for Birmingham city centre’s retail area and has been supporting its members since 2007, promoting, enhancing and developing the shopping and leisure experience in the city centre. While the retail environment is forever changing with the challenge of shopping online, the Retail BID firmly believes in supporting the shopping experience delivered by retailers in the city centre, maintaining Birmingham’s position as the regional capital for shopping. WELCOME

Project will be rolled out to member businesses and shopping centres

With so much happening in the city centre, one of the big challenges of creating a quarterly news magazine for members is making sure that we keep it up to date. We have seen lots of new stores and hospitality venues opening up in the city centre which are featured in this edition and we’ve also had some recent good news that the redevelopment of the corner of New Street and High Street will now go ahead with an expanded JD Sports flagship store, sitting alongside a brand new Metro Bank, opposite the re-developed Primark store on High Street, which is on schedule to open in time for Christmas. Lush are also moving to larger premises in New Street, joining the newly opened Thomas Cook. We are also fortunate to have a growing dining quarter in the BID area with many new restaurants opening this year. Alongside a strong independent sector, we continue to have many reasons for people to shop and visit in the city centre. Of course, with all the positive news of new occupiers and movements, we can’t avoid the very disappointing news of losing our biggest and much-loved department store House of Fraser, which is set close in January 2019. It has been a difficult decision for the group, however the BID is working closely with all of our major stores to assist the House of Fraser employees with opportunities to continue working in the city centre retail area. Hopefully you will all have seen the BID’s investment in the dinosaur trail and floral displays this summer, it helps to soften the area and alongside our deep-cleansing programme, it does make the city centre feel a far more pleasurable place to visit and shop. Christmas will soon be here and the BID will have a very exciting announcement soon with regard to making the area a must-visit destination during the festive season. As always if the team can be assistance to you please do get in touch, we are here to help.

Retail BID is launching its own digital radio network for the four BID Patrol Officers, which will then be rolled out to BID members and shopping centres, including city centre CCTV camera operators. Working closely with partners, the radio network is part of the BID’s ambition to create a new Birmingham Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BBCRP). A Retail BID survey of 200 city centre retailers in the summer of 2017 found that store theft was an issue for 55 per cent of respondents, while 25 per cent said it was having a significant impact on business. The Retail BID Patrol team already work to reduce anti-social behaviour in the city centre and to keep retail businesses aware of other threats such as terror, demonstrations and potential business disruption and the new radio system will improve this further. The BID has recently invested in the latest aerial and handset technology to ensure a comprehensive and reliable service for all businesses. The Birmingham Business Crime Reduction Partnership will be based at Retail BID’s offices and work with key partners such as West Midlands Police, Birmingham City Council, major department stores and destinations including Bullring

and Grand Central and the Mailbox. “The world has changed, and so too has the way crime in city centres manifests itself,” explained Jonathan Cheetham, who will lead the new BBCRP Steering Group on behalf of the Retail BID board. “Businesses need to step up to the plate and combat these issues in the best way possible. There is no strength in doing something like this on your own. The strength lies in co-ordination, communication and organisation. That’s what we will deliver. “There are lots of strains on any business to run itself, and although crime is an important issue, some businesses haven’t got the resources or expertise to deal with it all themselves. That is where the Birmingham Business Crime Reduction Partnership comes along.” More details will be circulated to members shortly on how to get involved and obtain a radio for use in stores.

TAKE PART IN POLICE BUSINESS CRIME SURVEY West Midlands Police Business Crime Lead, Supt Harvi Khatkar, is conducting a survey into business crime reporting. The survey is an online reporting tool as part of the WMP2020 Project Digital Experience for Citizens (DEC) and will help the Force understand the priorities relating to business crime and how retailers report issues. Please take five minutes to complete the survey:

The new-look website

NEW LOOK FOR SHOPPING WEBSITE Retail BID is working with city digital agency Adaptable to create a new website for the powerful Shopping in Birmingham brand. The new website is due to go live in the summer and special attention has been paid to SEO – search engine optimisation – to ensure BID member businesses feature highly in online search results when people are looking for places to shop in the city. Development time has also been invested in making the website more consumer friendly with a fresh new look and directory of businesses across the BID area.

BID TEAM TO TAKE PART IN TRAINING The Retail BID team is undergoing important training in CSE (Child Sexual Exploitation) guidance. The BID’s Patrol Officers will be first to take part in the training to help their day-to-day duties patrolling the BID and supporting members of the public and member businesses. The CSE training is being provided by children’s charity Barnardo’s with the support of West Midlands Police and will be carried out by the whole BID team. The training will help the BID understand the complexities involved in child sexual exploitation and the signs there may be an issue, with particular attention paid to hospitality and leisure venues.

Retail BID’s latest marketing campaigns to drive footfall to the city centre will be on display throughout the summer of 2018. A digital campaign focusing on Eid shopping in Birmingham city centre was launched with calls to action across all media and on the BID’s shoppinginbirmingham.com website, which has content from all stores regarding beauty, accessories, menswear and children’s wear. The bold imagery is being used to target the 45-minute drive-time to Birmingham city centre, with targeted digital advertising and social media engagement. The BID is in conversation with all department stores and partners on the concept of an autumn Beauty Live weekend to build on the success of the event in 2017. Keep an eye on BID communications for more information or get in touch with Assia Sohaib if you would like to get involved.

The BID prints 250,000 of the handy pocket-sized maps each year, which are available for free at hotels, transport hubs and tourist information points. The maps are updated each year to show new stores, bars, restaurants and give profile to independent businesses across the Retail BID. The Lost & Found

PATROL OFFICERS FIRST ON SCENE OF RESTAURANT FIRE Quick thinking by Retail BID Patrol Officers Wayne McLoughlin and Bryan Edwards helped save one of the city centre’s oldest buildings from being badly damaged by fire. The duo spotted smoke rising from the roof of the listed Lost & Found bar and restaurant on Bennetts Hill and acted immediately. The two Patrol Officers contacted the Fire Service, helped evacuate staff and used fire extinguishers to put out the blaze, which is believed to have started in ventilation spaces. Their efforts were praised by Fire Officers who were quickly on the scene. The Lost & Found, which was recently refurbished with a new mezzanine area and additional dining space, was able to reopen for business days after the incident. REFURBISHMENT PICTURES: PAGE 14

Business Support Officers Paul Barnett and Peter Ash with Patrol Officers Wayne McLoughlin and Bryan Edwards

Officer joins BID with extensive experience of city centre issues

Retail BID has appointed a new Patrol Officer to help strengthen the team of highly-visible city centre support roles. Wayne McLoughlin joins the BID with extensive knowledge of Business Improvement Districts and the issues facing city centres. The BID’s Business Support Officers and Patrol Officers act as a visual deterrent and discourage anti-social behaviour at key hotspots in the city centre, working alongside PCSOs, West Midlands Police officers and the city council’s Street Intervention Team. They also help people find their way around the city centre by handing out maps to visitors and provide support for retailers. Wayne will work alongside fellow Patrol Officer Bryan Edwards and Business

Support Officers Paul Barnett and Peter Ash on regular retail area patrols. Retail BID Manager Steve Hewlett said: “We are pleased that Wayne has joined the team. He brings with him extensive experience of working with the public and partner organisations, together with an understanding of the BID’s aims and objectives. His appointment is part of the Retail BID strategy to strengthen our on-street presence for the benefit of members and customers, ensuring the city centre remains a safe and enjoyable place to work and visit.” Businesses that observe anti-social behaviour such as begging and alcohol/ drug abuse are encouraged to report incidents to the Police on 101 as well as contacting the Retail BID Officers.

New Street and Corporation Street after the specialist cleaning work paid for by the BID

Grime and gum removed from high footfall areas in latest phase of works

Retail BID Birmingham has started a new programme of pavement deep-cleaning to make the city centre streets more attractive for summer visitors. High footfall areas such as New Street, High Street and Corporation Street are being steam-cleaned and chewing gum removed in time for the summer period.

Gum and grime will be removed as part of the BID’s ongoing street cleaning programme, carried out by Ramora Ltd, a specialist cleaning company. Ramora Ltd does not use any chemicals in the cleaning process, just steam – so there are no environmental implications when removing chewing gum from streets, and the works are

being carried out during evenings to avoid disruption to businesses. David Johnson of Rex Johnson & Sons on Corporation Street said: “There is a massive difference and we are delighted to see the change. I’m very pleased that Retail BID continue to invest in the deep cleaning and ensure the city centre looks its best.”

A special pocket-sized trail map has been distributed across the Midlands to encourage extra city centre visitors and show where each dinosaur is located. The map features interesting

facts and figures about the different species on display. The BID has worked with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Natural History Museum on the Trail. Lisa Williams, Head of Branch at John Lewis Birmingham and Retail BID Board Director, said: “The Dino Trail is another way of entertaining visitors of all ages who will be making their way to the museum for a family day out. “With ten topiary dinosaurs on display right across the city centre, this is a great way of showcasing all the great shopping and dining options in Birmingham. The Retail BID is enjoying an expansion in its food and drink offering with new arrivals such as The Ivy Temple Row, Sabai Sabai and Revolucion de Cuba joining existing favourites such as San Carlo, Fumo, The Botanist and Michelin-starred Adam’s. In this edition of Edit, we take a look at the mouthwatering menus and brilliant bar staff helping to attract new visitors to the city centre.

With its spectacular interior and equally impressive views out to Birmingham Cathedral, the Ivy Temple Row brings a touch of chic glamour to the Retail BID and its booming Dining Quarter. The Ivy restaurants are famous the world over for their classic style, quality cuisine and impeccable service. Birmingham General Manager Liz Burton talks about how the new venue has been received since opening in the spring.

What can diners expect when they visit The Ivy Temple Row? The Ivy Collection always brings an air of sophisticated glamour, but the key message with our Birmingham brasserie is accessibility. Bookings are of course recommended, but the restaurant holds back covers every day so if you’re passing by and fancy a coffee or a quick bite to eat, we’ll always do our best to accommodate you. We want to create a venue that is perfect for all occasions, from business breakfasts to anniversary celebrations.

‘I’ve worked around the world but Birmingham is home and the city is in a golden era for foodies’

You must be proud to be managing such a high-profile establishment for Birmingham; how has the launch been for you and your team? The reception the restaurant has received has been overwhelming. Everyone is so pleased to see another hugely reputable brand handpick Birmingham for a site. I’ve worked all around the world, but Birmingham is home, and the city is in a golden era for foodies, so I’m really excited

for the future. The opening month has been busy and the feedback has been amazing, but that is all down to having the right team in place, and I know we have that here. How does a restaurant brand with such an illustrious heritage and famous reputation for excellence maintain this? The Ivy, West Street, is such a prestigious restaurant, famed for its celebrity clientele. And whilst The Ivy Collection openings have similar interior themes and high levels of

service, we want the Birmingham restaurant to forge its own reputation. We want to become your local neighbourhood brasserie, where regulars call in for coffee, and the staff know your favourite tables. Our price point comes as a surprise to most, with our set menu priced at threecourses for £21. We make sure the service never wavers, and that our employees understand the ethos of the brand, and we think that is reflected in your Ivy Temple Row experience.

FLOWER POWER!

House of Fraser on Corporation Street

BID brightens retail area with ten summer floral features The Retail BID is once again bringing the scents of summer to the city centre streets after unveiling new flower towers and floral features across the area. The BID has invested in ten new flower towers for 2018, which were installed with the help of Birmingham City Council Parks Department. The flower towers pictured here are placed on New Street, near the Apple store, and Lower Temple Street, which is one of the busiest streets in the city as it faces New Street station. Additional flower towers have been installed across the city centre.

Lost piece of retail history uncovered during tram works

BID to work with HoF after closure news Retail BID has offered to work with local managers at House of Fraser following the news the group will close its Birmingham store next year. The famous Corporation Street store, formerly Rackham’s, is one of 31 stores (of the group’s 59) earmarked for closure next year, with hundreds of jobs at risk. The store closures will be undertaken through a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA), which is being drawn up with the help of accountancy firm KPMG. Richard Norgrove, Chair, Retail BID Birmingham, said: “Retail BID is naturally disappointed to be losing one of the city’s major department stores and we will be working with the local management team at House of Fraser to see how we can help the affected staff into new roles with other retailers in the city centre. “Going forward, we will be discussing with the owners and Birmingham City Council the future plans for the building after the store’s planned closure in early 2019, particularly given the recent investment in the new Midland Metro along Corporation Street.”

Famous store earmarked to shut in 2019

The Victorian shutter will be preserved and enclosed with a new sign

During construction work by the Midland Metro Alliance to extend the tramway to the Westside of Birmingham, a lost piece of history has been uncovered; original Victorian roller shutters have surfaced at a shop in Pinfold Street. The roller shutters, which would have been used to provide security, were previously hidden by the shop front of hair salon Supercuts, which was once home to 19th century piano manufacturers Dale, Forty & Co, among others, during that time. Due to historical interest, the shutters will be preserved and enclosed with a new sign. They are unable to be left exposed as they currently extend under the shop front of an adjacent store. Based on the preservation rulings, the roller shutters do not need to be displayed. Steve Grimes, the Midland Metro Alliance’s Project Director for the Birmingham Westside Extension, said: “There is always potential for items of historical importance to be uncovered

during construction, and these roller shutters are a fascinating find that provide an interesting glimpse into the history of Birmingham city centre. “We started construction on the first phase of the extension last year, and the shutters were uncovered during structural repairs to the building, which, due to its age, needed to be carried out prior to the main works. Due to their heritage, the shutters will be staying in place, but will be covered with new fascia.” Strengthening works will form the next stage of construction in Pinfold Street, with works expected to be completed there in the summer. Supercuts will move back in following a full refurbishment. Meanwhile, enabling works on phase two of the extension, connecting Centenary Square to Edgbaston, are continuing in Victoria Square and the lower end of Broad Street, where there are a number of traffic management changes to accommodate this.

SHARE YOUR VIEWS ON CITY’S PROPOSED CLEAN AIR ZONE Birmingham’s population is growing, new buildings are going up, the city’s rail and metro systems are getting bigger and faster and we have the Commonwealth Games to look forward to in 2022. Pollution in the air, mainly caused by vehicles on the roads, is having a harmful effect on the health of people living, working and studying in the city. The city needs cleaner air as soon as possible and has already started to make positive changes. The Government expects Birmingham, and several other cities, to introduce a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) from January 2020 and it is important the right steps are followed and the right questions asked to ensure the right actions are taken. The city is proposing a Clean Air Zone, where the most polluting vehicles will have to pay to enter the city centre: all the roads within the A4540 Middleway ring road. A consultation has been opened (until August 17) to allow residents and businesses to tell the city council what they think and how they will be affected by the CAZ.¬ Responses will be used solely for the CAZ consultation and will be kept confidential. Any comments used will be kept anonymous and individuals will not be identified. Retail BID members are encouraged to take part in the consultation by visiting https:// www.birmingham.gov.uk/caz

The Mailbox up for sale for £235 million

UK’s largest mixed-use building outside London being marketed for sale

Brockton Capital has put The Mailbox in Birmingham up for sale. The investor and its joint venture partner Milligan have appointed CBRE to market The Mailbox for £235 million. The Mailbox is one of Brockton’s longest-held assets and the UK’s largest mixed-use building outside London, having bought it in 2011 for £127.1 million from Alan Chatham and Mark Billingham’s Birmingham Development Company at the market’s nadir. It is currently held in the Brockton Capital Fund II LP, the £500

million fund that closed in 2010. Since the acquisition, Brockton has undertaken a major Stanton Williams-designed repositioning and refurbishment of the asset. It is currently 95% let, with an average unexpired lease term of more than 15 years and has a rent roll of more than £13 million. The building is best-known for its leisure offering, including bars and an Everyman cinema, as well as upmarket retailers. Brockton secured Harvey Nichols as its

45,000 sq ft anchor tenant in 2013, and it is also home to retailers such as Hugo Boss, Emporio Armani, Paul Smith, made. com and Heal’s. However, 40% of the building’s income is from office tenants including the BBC, Advanced Computer Software Group, Associated Architects and engineering firm WSP, which leased 47,000 sq ft in January. It also has a 687-space car-park, which is one of the city’s busiest. The 200 flats, which were sold off individually following the building’s completion in 2000, and the long-leasehold of the 193-bed Malmaison hotel owned by Legal & General, which are integrated within the building, are not included in the sale. The asking price for the 690,000 sq ft scheme reflects a yield of 5.25% and a capital value of £340 per sq ft. In an interview with Edit magazine for the Spring 2018 edition, Simon Samuels of Brockton, said: “Having put a huge amount of capital and effort into turning the Mailbox into what it is today, this asset has become a great hub for everyone who lives and works in the city. “With the broader investment and big corporates looking at Birmingham, this is really helping to reposition the city. “Birmingham is having its renaissance right now.”

Dose of medicine at unique space One of the most unique venues in the Retail BID is looking to work with independent traders, artists, designers and makers who are looking for new and innovative opportunities. Described as a new format of social space, Medicine, on New Street is an artisan bakery and kitchen, café and gallery in the former home of the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists. The Medicine team is aiming to create a community which will offer a curated retail experience for discerning city shoppers. There is the opportunity for short, medium and long term pitches, as well as seasonal pop-up opportunities, giving traders direct access to a city centre retail location and high footfall. It is a great opportunity for start-ups, design collectives, sample sales or established traders who are looking for a different environment to sell in.

The evolution of the Medicine brand can be traced back to its first incarnation on the nighttime scene of Digbeth. Along with hosting other successful music and artistic projects, events and venues in the West Midlands and around the UK, founder Simon Jones developed a progressive approach to creating new experiences and bringing communities together. All events at Medicine are being managed and curated by Gather Creative, which also offers employee health and well-being classes and creative workshops. n Gather Creative is hosting a Speed Quiz on August 3rd, which is open to local businesses who are looking for a different take on networking events. The quiz is free to attend for Retail BID members. Email linsy@ medicinegallery.co.uk

Support grows for Birmingham 2022 BIDs to work together to make sure Games is a success for city

Birmingham residents are overwhelmingly backing the Commonwealth Games coming to the city in 2022, according to a new survey. The findings come after the city took a starring role in the spectacular 2018 Commonwealth Games Handover ceremony to a global audience of more than a billion television viewers. Retail BID will begin working with other BIDs for a co-ordinated approach to ensure the city delivers an outstanding welcome for visitors and competitors. A special project group will be formed to help connect the BIDs and Games organisers for the benefit of the city. More than 350 people living in Birmingham and the wider region share

their support for the 2022 Games. A total of 82% of respondents believe being the next host city is “positive and will boost jobs and investment in the city”. The same number also think host city status will improve Birmingham’s national and international reputation. The snapshot of Birmingham attitudes was captured by Birmingham City Council and Culture Central at the Homecoming party in Victoria Square in April. The then Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Anne Underwood, said: “It’s incredibly encouraging to see that the people of Birmingham are excited about the next Commonwealth Games being held here. It’s going to be a truly fantastic journey for the city over the next few years.”

Exciting new arrivals at Bullring Estate

EDIT SUMMER 2018 PAGE 23

General Manager Michaela Moore shares insights about how Bullring and Grand Central are welcoming new arrivals As Bullring, Grand Central and LinkStreet are now a combined destination – becoming the Bullring Estate, this year has brought some exciting changes, a string of new leasing deals and openings, and several seasonal events at the centre that engages our visitors and enhances our offer. Global beauty retailer, NYX Professional Make-up, has selected the iconic Bullring for its first standalone store in the West Midlands and joins the existing retail line-up this summer. The popular brand has taken a 1,700 sq ft ground floor unit located on the Upper Level West, adjacent to Goldsmiths and New Look Men. NYX Professional Make-up selecting the Bullring Estate is a measure of the centre’s reputation as the region’s leading retail and leisure destination. As a sector, footwear is performing well across the Bullring Estate with sales showing a positive uplift in the first quarter of 2018. Selfridges has opened its second ever Shoe Galleries concept, following in the footsteps of London’s famous Shoe Galleries department. The 15,000 sq ft space launched on level four with a host of events to celebrate, including bespoke personalisation and performances. The new department now stocks over 1,700 different styles from almost 50 international designers, complementing the up-market offer provided by Tiffany & Co, Louis Vuitton and Fumo who also opened on level four at the end of last year. The investment from these brands echoes the continued strong performance of department stores at The Bullring Estate, and is directly reflected in the sales figures. In addition to Shoe Galleries, Footlocker and Footlocker kids have refit their stores, investing in Bullring and building upon the success of the footwear sector at the destination. Despite a mixed performance from some food and beverage operators so far

in 2018, dining and leisure at the Bullring Estate is thriving. We believe the industry shake-up presents new opportunities for the destination, and we have recognised and realised the consumer desire for exciting and fresh independents with a point of difference. This year, Grand Central’s dining offer has been significantly enhanced with the announcement and opening of a string of exciting brands. In the spring, Lebanese restaurant, Comptoir Libanais, opened its first restaurant in the West Midlands next to Indian street food specialists, Mowgli, who

also opened their first restaurant in the region in March. We have also announced that new entrant into the market, Holy Moly Macaroni, has opened its debut restaurant in the UK at Grand Central. The Harlem influenced soul food operator, headed up by local Birmingham chef Anthony Duffy, is recently joined by local family owned business, Tasty Plaice, and quick-service restaurant, Thai Express. The centre continues to host engaging and exciting events throughout 2018. On St Patrick’s day, World Champion Irish Dancers from the Scanlon School of Irish Dancing performed throughout the centre and the atrium in Grand Central was lit up in green light to celebrate the holiday. So far this year, we’ve also celebrated Chinese New Year in partnership with the Birmingham Chinese Festival, welcomed a ‘Brickfactor’ pop-up for Lego, run a successful Student Sessions and dressed the iconic Bull up for the Royal Wedding in May. It’s been a busy and successful few months for the Bullring Estate, and we are looking forward to welcoming many exciting new brands and shoppers, ensuring we continue to deliver the region’s best retail and leisure offer. Pop-in to enjoy Great Western pop-ups Great Western Arcade is continuing to make its mark as an independent retail landmark in Birmingham. Often described as the ‘home of hidden gems’, the arcade is going from strength to strength in 2018, with the success of its various pop-up shops and everexpanding list of independent and unique retailers.

Great Western Arcade is a must-visit retail and dining destination

NEW BEGINNINGS In April, Great Western Arcade welcomed Paul Horton Fine Art Gallery. Following the success of its pop-up gallery in December 2017, father and son, Paul and Mark Horton have now taken up a permanent residence at the historic venue. This addition celebrates the best of Birmingham’s talent – with home grown artist Paul being one of the UK’s most popular and collectible artists – the gallery is now bringing a

host of new visitors to the already broad offering at the arcade. May 12th saw the official launch event of the gallery, which received positive reviews from customers and collectors alike. Visitors are able to experience the new store and browse some of the pieces from the collection. POP-UPS Pop-up stores are becoming a popular feature at Great Western Arcade having hosted a string of successful events so far this year, including VQ’s women’s pop up sex and health shop, celebrating women and sexual health. The bold occasion celebrated women’s sexual needs, a niche and rarely seen retail experience. By teaming up with Birmingham City University, Great Western Arcade was able to provide a new experience to

shoppers, who were able to shop and trial various women’s sexual health products. This involved partnering with the likes of Birmingham LGBT and established women’s sexual health brands, including OMGYES and Precious Stars, as well as an original art piece with Kim Winwood Projects. The VQ event proved to be a success for Great Western Arcade, with many visitors leaving rave reviews across social media. Pop-up events have not been limited to external brands and companies, with many of Great Western Arcade’s own independent stores hosting various functions. Social Enterprise Business, Miss Macaroon, has hosted several pop-ups during its two-year tenancy, ranging from this April’s City Drive pop-up, which gained support from West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street, to blogger tasting events for new and exciting macaroon flavours. The arcade also continues to develop a cohesive relationship between its independent stores, encouraging brand collaborations at special events and openings. At the end of March, independent opticians Glimpse hosted a ‘Girls Night at Glimpse’, where customers could browse not only Glimpse’s new collection of frames, but accessories from neighbour Peter Forson, food and drink from Anderson and Hill, Miss Macaroon and Edinburgh Gin. At One Day Spa was also on hand to give stress relieving massages on the evening. In April, At One Day Spa also contributed to the arcade’s growing list of engaging evenings, with its very own Microblading Event, where customers were treated to a demonstration of the new treatment as well as make-up tutorials and advice and tips from a Charlotte Tilbury make-up artist. Whilst May saw luxury hat shop, Peter Forson, team up with milliner, Giulia Mio, for a timely Royal Ascot related event. A NEW REVOLUTION The rise of the independent coffee shop continues to be a staple amongst shoppers who want an individual and niche retailer experience, making the recent relaunch of favourite Birmingham-born coffee shop, York’s bakery, a very welcomed return indeed. The new menu demonstrates a revolution in coffee making, combining a

small and cosy espresso bar with a new sweet and savoury donut selection. Vegetarian restaurant, 1847 brings a modern element to the historic features of Great Western Arcade, after unveiling its new look following a makeover in April. The popular restaurant has transformed its upstairs dining area by creating a more contemporary, stylish Scandinavian vibe to match the fresh, seasonal, plant-based ingredients on their menu. As a great way

to encourage diners to try plant-based foods, 1847 offers a massive fifty percent discount every Monday, as part of its meat free Monday initiative. Great Western Arcade has also been taking part in events from across the city, with The Night Owl and Town Hall Symphony Hall choosing the arcade to host a Northern Soul Flash mob in January. The event was a big hit amongst passers by with the arcade reaching capacity early on.

Staying Cool greets 10 years with Creative Heights Boutique apartments host arts events to record ten years in city

The programme will feature ground-breaking music, art, food, performance and cinema experiences in the company’s dramatic penthouse apartment. Ten lucky competition winners enjoyed one of Alex’s creative menus against the backdrop of the cityscape on one of the longest nights of the year on June 21st. More penthouse events will take place later in the year, including Songs in the Sky with Songwall, showcasing local musical talent, an event in partnership with Reuben Colley Fine Art and a kitsch Columbo-themed evening with Jenny Hammerton, author of Cooking with Columbo, where guests will enjoy food and drink loved by the famous TV sleuth aka actor Peter Falk.
