foremost I want to thank everyone for their kind words as we celebrated our 38th Anniversary last month. It’s been a long and winding road over the almost four decades! ONE of the realizations I, or anyone who has been in business so long is that many of the people and companies you knew are no longer. That’s one of the bittersweet moments of our celebration. There are very few left from the 1980’s heyday of our industry. Our business was started at a great time in the industry and we remain grateful and humble to continue to serve our readers and advertisers. IN an editorial back in June of 2008 we were addressing the recession economy. It was a tough time back then and toppled many businesses. Fast forward 11 years and we are enjoying the fastest growing economy in our country’s history. It is a great time to be in business and every day is filled with new and exciting opportunities. THE month of June is the month of Dads and Grads. It’s a good month for retailers as there will be plenty of money spent on gifts for both segments. Our job as business owners is to make sure that everyone will be spending at OUR stores! Gifts for dads can range from sporting goods, recreation items, grilling supplies, lazy boys, auto and truck accessories and the like. For grads
which come in all sizes and ages ranging from preschool graduates wanting the latest LOL doll or playhouse to your garden breed of high school and college grads eyeing that shiny new Mercedes or Lexus. REMEMBER that it is never too late to add a quick sign to your window display inviting shoppers in to peruse your selection of gifts for Fathers Day and Graduation Day. You need to always be reminding new and regular shoppers that you have what they are needing. And sometimes they just don’t know what they need! That is where your sales skills come in. USE your imagination to create gifts and themes. Do you have a novelty store overstocked with too many exploding golf balls? What a fun gift for Dad that could be. If you have mugs or glasses you should be creating quick and easy gift baskets with them filling them with candy, small items that gift nicely. Throw on a ribbon or bow and voila, a readyto-go inexpensive gift that not only moves your slow inventory but gives you a nice margin. It’s all about being creative during the season.

CBD Is Showing Up Everywhere
WE are not sure on where you stand on CBD or legalization of marijuana and all that but one thing that has become quite apparent is that it is a hot topic in many states as well as at many shopping mails. CBD, or cannabis oil, a compound derived from hemp and marijuana does not cause a “high”. Mainstream retailers are jumping on the sudden popularity of the product even though CBD’s health benefits remain quite murky amid a patchwork of both local and state laws, And the product is flooding the market so quickly that its been testing how federal regulators can even control it. RETAIL sales of CBD consumer products last year were estimated to top $2 billion and by 2025 that figure can hit $16 billion in retail sales. Martha Stewart products is working with Canada’s Canopy Growth Corp to develop new CBD products and Simon Properties, the nation’s largest mall owner, has connected with a cannabis goods maker to open around 100 kiosks at US malls by midsummer this year. THERE are foot creams, soaps, edibles, oils and even CVS Health is starting to sell many items at their 800+ stores in seven states, with other rivals following suit. AND lest not retailers be left out, Barneys NY opened a shop in Beverly Hills, California to sell CBD infused creams along with hand blown glass bongs and other accessories. Neiman Marcus also started limited offerings in some of its stores. IT is interesting to see who is steering clear, at least for the time being. Amazon prohibits the sale of any CBD product on their marketplace. Walmart has no plans to carry CBD-infused items at this time and Target, which in 2017 sold hemp product extracts on its website quickly yanked them all off and said they are monitoring the situation. THE most interesting thing we could find about CBD is that there is very little evidence for all the health claims the industry touts. There is hype that it treats pain, reduces anxiety, helps you sleep, keeps you focused are all only based on studies of rats or mice in test tubes. Human research has been very limited. ONLY drugs that were reviewed by the FDA as safe and effective can tout claims of treatment or prevention. CBD producers get around this by using vague language. THIS is going to be a very interesting struggle between the regulators and the retailers. It could be billions of dollars of “snake oil” being sold to consumers. It is early on and we will probably see some serious regulation coming down the pike. Or consumers, after trying it with no result will kill the market themselves.
Fred’s and Ollie’s
PERSONALLY I have never seen either store, but apparently these discounters are owned by the same family and are off price stores. Fred’s apparently is in a death spiral closing around 25% of their stores while on the other hand Ollie’s is riding high with more store openings coming up. A big part of the failure and success is how operations are run. Fred’s control is by financial investors while Ollie’s growth has been organic without overwhelming outside debt. Retailing and debt loads just don’t mix! THE true formula of a successful discounter is instant brand recognition on the closeouts they sell. You need to be consistent and offer good products and values to the shoppers. It appears that Ollie’s will endure for the long haul while Fred’s future is not looking too promising.

THE MEN AND WOMEN IN THE MIDDLE Continued from last issue... Other companies rely on independent sales representatives – commonly called reps – to develop, service, and sell to their retail network. Reps function much like a company’s own sales force. Usually they represent the product lines of companies too small for a dedicated sales staff, or for suppliers without sales staff in a particular region of the country. Reps usually handle only one brand in a category. They may represent several suppliers in an industry as long as those products are not in direct competition. This can give them a much broader sense of trends; reps are especially well attuned to what’s happening at retail. Most salespeople don’t actually deliver the goods they sell. Your order will get passed on to the supplier’s own warehouse, or to a distributor who fills the order. Some distributors function as shipping warehouses for the manufacturer. Others operate as product wholesalers, a retailer to the retailer. Some distributors publish a catalog detailing the variety of products available for order and delivery. Since they’re more often specialists in a category rather than a particular manufacturer’s line of product, distributors often have the best insight into market trends. Other salespeople
work in the field and spend a lot of time traveling. Distributors take orders by phone, fax, or modem. They may hear from more retailers in a day than the field sales staff can visit in a week. While their primary function is to sell, anyone serving as the supplier’s middle man should be regarded as an ally in developing your store’s marketing program. They’re a good source for information on what products will be promoted, when, and how. They can help you acquire everything related to product support, from literature and ad slicks to co-op dollars for local advertising. Occasionally you may deal with an individual who actually makes the products he wants your store to sell. This is especially true for stores marketing arts and crafts or other oneof-a-kind products. The often self-employed producers of these goods usually lack the resources to extend the payment terms available from distributors and manufacturers. The best they can do is agree to supply you with goods on consignment. The maker of the craft sets her price, and you’re free to add whatever margin seems reasonable. When the product sells, the artist gets paid. This strategy benefits both parties, especially when either is building a business. Selling on consignment gives the supplier a market to prove the worth of the product. For you, it’s a risk-free opportunity to experiment with new inventory. continued...

forumworkshop FORUM WORKSHOP DEFINED BY PRICE Regardless of how your store acquires its stock, one of the toughest challenges facing you is establishing a pricing strategy. Price sends consumers a loud message about who you want to be. People shop specialty stores for the combination of selection and service not found elsewhere. They expect to pay a little more for that privilege. Pricing should be a reasonable response to the trends in the market and an acknowledgment that your store offers something more. The specialty store owner who cuts margins close in a pitch for sales undercuts the reasons the store exists. Price must allow room to cover expenses and provide a living wage. If the store concept cannot deliver that much return, you chose the
wrong niche. Consider the expenses to be covered by the difference between what you pay and sell goods for: rent or mortgage, insurance, utilities, computers, advertising, upkeep and improvements on the store. Add to that your responsibilities as an employer. Staff deserves a decent wage. A benefits package is smart, too; it’s cheaper to hold on to your old employees than find, hire, and train new ones. Only after you’ve met all those obligations can you start thinking about your own salary. So if your pricing doesn’t allow room to cover all the basics, there won’t be much of anything in the till by the time you dip into it for your compensation. continued...

She’s the salesperson, the stock clerk, and cashier all rolled into one smiling individual. Enthusiasm always wins customers over. In all dealings with customers, store personnel should follow the owner’s lead and maintain a degree of professionalism and warmth. No one enjoys dealing with a retail salesperson who comes across as slick and primed for any sale. Managing people requires combining the psychological and intuitive skills mentioned earlier with an ability to communicate directly and effec-

Your first step is to begin keeping a notebook or set up a computer file devoted to your retail store. When you put your thoughts and plans on paper, and can return to them, they assume a greater sense of urgency. Written plans and established goals provide a yardstick with which to measure your progress, or lack of it. For some of us, writing things down helps organize our thoughts and plans. Once recorded for posterity, they’re there as a reference, either to jog your memory or refamiliarize you with something once learned but forgotten. You can increase your chances for success if you enter a product market already familiar to you. So the investigation begins with an assess-
ment of what you bring to the venture in background, skills, and interest. This information should provide insight on the products or product categories you are best suited to sell. In your first entry, describe yourself: age, income, family, interests, things you enjoy doing, things you hate doing, and anything else you would use to describe you. Include your major accomplishments or disappointments, as well as your personal and financial goals. Next compose a few lines summarizing why you want to go into business for yourself. What’s so bad about your present job? How will owning your business improve that? What do you want from your store? What will it take to make you happy? Unfortunately, the prime real estate that all but guarantees prosperity for certain retail ventures has by now all been claimed. Sure, the occasional new interstate or major shopping mall will still be built. But today the typical independent retailer has to rely on more than location to deliver customers. The store itself must possess some compelling feature that makes people want to shop there.
Today’s trend of huge, generalist discount stores and price clubs creates a real need for the smaller specialty store. You can, and must, focus your business on a narrow segment of the market, defined either by interest, age group,
or demographic profile. That’s the market upon which you can build a business. It’s not enough to put together a selective assortment of merchandise and wait to tally sales. To be successful you must present shoppers with solutions to their purchase needs. That may be as frivolous as a new doodad to display on their mantel, or as necessary as a new liner for the chimney. The successful specialty store gains a reputation as the unrivaled source for selection and related services in a select category of merchandise.
