hat a strange few months this has been for all of us. A real challenge to how we do business, a harsh judgement on our customer mix and a clear ruling on who and what is really important in our personal and business lives. For context, I am writing this article at the start of the opening up… the beginning of Phase 2, which will hopefully go well and at least allow the island of Ireland to get back to some level of normality over the next number of months. It has been a strange time. Some sectors and people have never worked harder, like those great people on the frontline. Many other sectors have had their businesses totally wiped out, at least in the short term. These companies face real challenges to get up and running: bringing in and paying for new stock, getting back their staff and making ends meet, with the impact of social distancing adding cost, or undermining revenue opportunities. While any number of these sectors deserve

IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

comment, I am going to look at the general issues and the impacts on the broader packaging sector in this article. In general, the packaging sector worked well through the Covid crisis, particularly where they supplied food and pharma sectors and therefore qualified for exemptions and were able to continue working, even if with a reduced work force. This, of course, wasn’t without difficulty, as engineering service support and supply chains were affected. Not to mention distancing issues at work and the possibility of being short-staffed with people out sick, ill or in isolation. While some food packaging flexible film and other providers were up a bit, the general result was that most packaging companies, although busy, were down 20% or more on last year. The benefit of less travel and sales expenses helped to offset things a little, but it has been a very challenging period for all. For instance, printing ink supply was starting to have issues with the increased usage of ethanol and n-propanol by other

sectors. I know of a number of machine installations that were late or on hold due to the inability of engineers to travel or some that have been delivered but stayed wrapped, as they cannot get Chinese engineers and trainers to travel and install. As a result of Covid, many new capital equipment investment programmes are on hold until things become clearer, or are pushed out to next year.

Re-examining your supply chain I think companies should consider where they are sourcing from, as they have now seen the impact of very long supply chains, not to mention the carbon footprint of these supply chains. As Europeans, I think we should support European manufacturers. As things stand, we are passing more and more of our business (commodity and equipment) to Asia. As we have now seen, this comes with risk, and can have a sizeable impact. Aside from the risk, we need to ask ourselves do we want a Europe that has

Working from home Working from home was a new challenge. Many liked it. There could be an impact on commercial property in the centre of Dublin, for instance, with companies like Twitter and Facebook saying they will keep it up, to a large extent. Perhaps this will encourage the banks to move away from property, as the ubiquitous quick gain and look to entrepreneurship and manufacturing as the way forward for investment and growth in Ireland. I think home-working can work well, if you have space at home, but being perched on the couch or sitting at the dining room table for ever more is not ideal. In this recent scenario, it was particularly difficult, with partners and kids also at home, all looking for their own space, WiFi and computer access. In a more normalised scenario of full-time

home-working, I believe it would not be easy to build loyalty and team spirit at a distance. If not handled well, it could become a benefit, primarily to the employers (akin to zero-hours contracts), where the employee has increased pressure and workload, with little benefit or sense of belonging. I heard of a number of stories, where some people found it (save the commute), actually more stressful, with endless numbers of Zoom / Skype / Teams calls, or long meetings, where they were only needed for a small portion of it, leaving them little time for their normal work to be done. To succeed, it does need a well-considered, hand-off approach and will not suit certain management styles and some employees.

The impact on recycling As we were all at home and couldn’t go out or eat out, this impacted on the recycling sector in a big way. Normally the vast bulk of their collections are from a small number of large commercial operations (hotel, restaurants, factories etc.), but as a result of Covid, they had the reverse of this, only collecting from households, but with an increased volume and very little on the commercial collection side. You can imagine this completely changed the volume and profile of the

We need to ask ourselves do we want a Europe that has a weaker and weaker manufacturing sector? I don’t want a European industry of just shipping companies and supply chain warehouses. I think we need to wake up and look at the bigger picture, of future employment, economic growth and supply chain confidence.

a weaker and weaker manufacturing sector? Should we endlessly chase the cheapest price? If Europe gets weaker, someone is getting stronger. Do we really want the balance of power to shift further? The Asian economies are bigger and stronger now than they have ever been and will have their own local markets to supply going forward. Growing prosperity will drive up their prices, but at that point, maybe Europe will be too far gone to start manufacturing competitively again. I know of a company in China that has 38 B1 6 colour Litho printing presses in a row, printing cartons for the export market. I challenge you to find a European company with anything close to this many machines on one site. I don’t want a European industry of just shipping companies and supply chain warehouses. I think we need to wake up and look at the bigger picture, of future employment, economic growth and supply chain confidence.

If large numbers of people are buying their weekly food shopping online, it could start to impact on the design and substrates used in these FMCG product packs.

waste, adding cost at every stage. An interesting outcome of Covid is that it has highlighted one of the key functions and benefits of packaging, protecting the product. We have now seen many historically loose food items being bagged or wrapped, like fresh breads, pastries, coffee stirrers etc., and will probably see a drive back to portion packs, rather than large size dispensers, when the foodservice sector gets back up and running. Even the encouraged use of reusable coffee cups has been slowed by coffee shops, as they understandably do not wish to handle them. This outcome unfortunately goes against the ethos of reducing unnecessary packaging and may complicate the planned single-use plastics legislation, due next year. It will be interesting to see how this will be handled and if the legislation needs to

be changed or postponed. Supermarkets, brand owners and their suppliers (including packaging companies) have all done a pretty impressive job over this period, taking care of their staff and customers, while trying to handle increased sales, keeping the shelves full and maintaining their supply chain. This has not been easy with the pressures of staff shortages, increased stress levels and all with hit-and-miss raw material supply.

Display/POS graphics The display / POS graphics sector has assisted these retail stores and workplaces, with all sorts of signage, floor graphics, screens and barriers. Just as well, as their traditional area of Point of Sales stands and displays have been hit hard during these times. I imagine we will see fewer of these type of POS marketing campaigns for the next while and those that do happen will be expected to last longer, giving a real challenge to the agencies to build stronger brand stories and to traditional print companies to cope with falling volumes. Corrugated packaging continues to rise in demand, as one of the key packaging substrates, essential for product distribution: outers, SRP’s, displays, trays and of course E-commerce.

The potential affects of stronger online sales E-tailers like Amazon and Alibaba and of course E-commerce sites have been the big winners from Covid. Speaking to my local postman, he said it was like Christmas volume every day during the crisis. This gives you an idea of the increase and scale of online shopping, for everything from groceries to tins of paint. Courier companies quote a similar story and were barely able to handle volumes, requiring additional staff to handle swamped sorting facilities. This all begs the question: what will people do afterwards? Will they go back to the high street, or do they find online so convenient that the trend will continue? There could be big repercussions to this in terms of employment, retail property, waste collections, packaging volumes, couriers, and even packaging design. A further shift from the supermarket shelf to online will challenge brand identity. If large numbers of people are buying their

The challenge for Ireland’s packaging industry is to react to this new reality and to see opportunities, to maybe diversify or change our message, or frame it better, to suit our customers and the way they are changing.

weekly food shopping online, it could start to impact on the design and substrates used in these FMCG product packs. While web-sites will continue to show the photo image of the branded product, shape and colour, does the delivered pack still need to represent the brand visually / physically in the traditional way? Could the product pack be plainer, with a basic print or cheaper substrate to suit a new shorter supply chain, or maybe the use of refillable packs could increase for this online business. There could actually be some positive sustainability arguments made in favour of this, but will most people go back to the traditional model and what percentage won’t? This is the big question. These are going to be interesting times and the sooner we get a vaccine the better. I know many pharma companies and universities are working on it, but apparently without good antibodies being generated in the body, it is very difficult to develop a vaccine.

Training the packaging technologists of tomorrow Speaking of universities, if students can’t return to campus, they too will be faced with difficulties, as a lot of their revenue comes from on-campus sources, such

as accommodation, parking, foodservice, etc. They are being challenged to find new ways to deliver content, manage students learning at a distance and find new revenue streams. From my recent experience with online workshops and this year’s Diploma in Packaging Technology, which moved partially online, teaching and marking papers from open-book exams is different and takes a little getting used to, but is possible. We have all been challenged to react to this new reality and to see opportunities, to maybe diversify or change our message, or frame it better, to suit our customers and the way they are changing. Good luck. Stay safe.

Circular Economy

EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan powers ahead

The European Commission’s new Circular Economy Action Plan points the way to a climate-neutral, competitive economy of empowered consumers. What does it mean for the packaging industry? IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

Circular Economy

S

ustainability is no longer just a buzz word or a side issue. Greta Thunberg’s incredible journey has taken climate change to the front pages of newspapers all over the world. Indeed, it is the millennial generation who are driving the sustainability agenda forward and insisting that it stays top of mind with politicians and law makers. As millennials’ spending power grows, their power increases and companies and brands have to adapt to the new customer reality. The EU has been moving towards a Circular Economy for some time now, however, and March 2020 saw the European Commission adopting a new Circular Economy Action Plan, one of the main building blocks of the European Green Deal, Europe’s new agenda for sustainable growth. With measures along the entire life cycle of products, the new Action Plan aims to make our economy fit for a green future, strengthen our competitiveness while protecting the environment, and give new rights to consumers. Building on the work done since 2015, the new Plan focuses on the design and production for a circular economy, with the aim to ensure that the resources used are kept in the EU economy for as long as possible. It also has potentially significant repercussions for the packaging industry in Europe, as the Commission’s aim is to make all packaging placed on the EU market reusable or recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030. “To achieve climate-neutrality by 2050, to preserve our natural environment, and to strengthen our economic competitiveness, requires a fully circular economy,” said Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, at the launch of the Action Plan. “Today, our economy is still mostly linear, with only 12% of secondary materials and resources being brought back into the economy. Many products break down too easily, cannot be reused, repaired or recycled, or are made for single use only. There is a huge potential to be exploited both for businesses and consumers.” He described the plan as a way to “transform the way products are made and empower consumers to make sustainable choices for their own benefit and that of the environment.” Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius, said: “We only have one planet earth, and

yet by 2050 we will be consuming as if we had three. The new plan will make circularity the mainstream in our lives and speed up the green transition of our economy. We offer decisive action to change the top of the sustainability chain – product design. Future-oriented actions will create business and job opportunities, give new rights to European consumers, harness innovation and digitalisation and, just like nature, make sure that nothing is wasted.” The transition towards a circular economy is already underway, the Commission insists, with “frontrunner businesses, consumers and public authorities in Europe embracing this sustainable model”. The 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan presents measures to: • Make sustainable products the norm in the EU: The Commission will propose legislation on Sustainable Product Policy, to ensure that products placed on the EU market are designed to last longer, are easier to reuse, repair and recycle, and incorporate as much as possible recycled material instead of primary raw material. Single-use will be restricted, premature obsolescence tackled and the destruction of unsold durable goods banned. • Empower consumers: Consumers will have access to reliable information on issues such as the reparability and durability of products to help them make environmentally

ı

sustainable choices. Consumers will benefit from a true ‘Right to Repair’. • Focus on the sectors that use the most resources and where the potential for circularity is high: The Commission will launch concrete actions on electronics and ICT, batteries & vehicles, plastics, textiles, construction & buildings, food and packaging. With regard to packaging, there will be new mandatory requirements on what is allowed on the EU market, including the reduction of (over)packaging. When it comes to food, there is a new legislative initiative on reuse to substitute single-use packaging, tableware and cutlery by reusable products in the foodservice sector. Plastics will have new mandatory requirements for recycled content and special attention on microplastics as well as biobased and biodegradable plastics. • Ensure less waste: The focus will be on avoiding waste altogether and transforming it into high-quality secondary resources that benefit from a well-functioning market for secondary raw materials. The Commission will explore setting an EU-wide, harmonised model for the separate collection of waste and labelling. The Action Plan also puts forward a series of actions to minimise EU exports of waste and tackle illegal shipments.

At a glance The new Action Plan announces initiatives for the entire life cycle of products, from

establishing sustainability principles. The new rules will in particular address the need to improve product durability, reusability, upgradability and reparability, addressing the presence of hazardous chemicals in products and increasing the recycled content in products. It will also aim at restricting single-use and countering premature obsolescence. Introducing a ban on the destruction of unsold durable goods will also be part of the measures. The Commission will launch a European Circular Dataspace to mobilise the potential of digitalisation of product information, introducing for example digital product passports.

What does the Plan propose for Packaging?

design and manufacturing to consumption, repair, reuse, recycling, and bringing resources back into the economy. It introduces legislative and non-legislative measures and targets areas where action at the EU level brings added value. The Action Plan is at the core of the European Green Deal, the EU roadmap towards climate-neutrality, presented by the von der Leyen Commission on December 11, 2019, which sets an ambitious roadmap towards a climateneutral circular economy, where economic growth is decoupled from resource use. A circular economy reduces pressure on natural resources, and is a precondition for achieving the climate-neutrality target by 2050 and halting biodiversity loss. Half of total greenhouse gas emissions and more than 90% of biodiversity loss and water stress come from resource extraction and processing. The aim of the Action Plan is to reduce the EU’s consumption footprint and double its circular material use rate in the coming decade, while boosting economic growth. This will be done in full cooperation with stakeholders and business. Applying ambitious circular economy measures in Europe can increase EU’s GDP by an additional 0.5% by 2030 and create around 700,000 new jobs. IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

At present, many products break down too quickly, cannot be reused, repaired or recycled, or can only be used once. This linear pattern of production and consumption (“take-make-use-dispose”) does not give producers an incentive to make more sustainable products. The Sustainable Product Policy Framework aims to change this situation with actions to make green products become the norm. The rules will also aim to reward manufacturers of products based on their sustainability performance and link high performance levels to incentives. A new Sustainable Product Policy Framework includes three main building blocks – actions on product design, on empowering consumers and on more sustainable production processes.

Design The Commission will launch a sustainable product legislative initiative. This initiative will have at its core a proposal to widen the Ecodesign Directive beyond energy-related products. The approach is to make the Ecodesign framework applicable to the broadest possible range of products and make it deliver on circularity. As part of this legislative initiative, and, where appropriate, through other instruments, the Commission will consider

The amount of materials used for packaging is continuously growing and in 2017 packaging waste in Europe reached 173kg per inhabitant, its highest level ever. The Commission will propose measures to ensure that the increase in the generation of packaging waste is reversed as a matter of priority, including by setting targets and other waste prevention measures. The Commission’s aim is to make all packaging placed on the EU market reusable or recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030. The Commission will propose to reinforce the mandatory essential requirements for all packaging placed on the EU market.

What does the Plan propose for Plastics? The Action Plan builds on the 2018 Plastics strategy, focusing on increasing recycled plastic content. Mandatory requirements on recycled content will be suggested in areas such as packaging, construction materials and vehicles. The Action Plan addresses also challenges related to microplastics and sourcing and use of bio-based and biodegradable plastics. On microplastics, the Commission will restrict the intentional adding of microplastics. It will also work on their unintentional release, further developing and harmonising measurement methods, pursuing labelling, certification and regulatory measures, and consider measures to increase the capture of microplastics in wastewater.

What does the Plan propose for Food? An estimated 20% of the total food

produced is lost or wasted in the EU. The Commission will propose a target on food waste reduction as part of the EU Farm-toFork Strategy. That Strategy will address the entire food value chain to ensure the sustainability of the sector – strengthening efforts to tackle climate change, protect the environment and preserve biodiversity. The Commission will launch analytical work to determine the scope of a legislative initiative on reuse to replace single-use food packaging, tableware and cutlery by reusable products in food services.

The Commission will continue modernising EU waste laws. Rules on waste shipments facilitating recycling or re-use within the EU will be reviewed. This will also aim to restrict exports of waste that cause negative environmental and health impacts in third countries by focusing on countries of destination, problematic waste streams and operations. The Commission will also consider how to help citizens to sort their waste though an EU-wide harmonised model for separate collection of waste and labelling.

What measures are foreseen on waste?

Promoting the Circular Economy internationally

Preventing waste from being created in the first place is key. Once waste has been created, it needs to be transformed into high-quality resources. The Commission will put forward waste reduction targets for more complex streams, and enhance the implementation of the recently adopted requirements for Extended Producer Responsibility schemes, amongst other actions.

The Action Plan proposes the launch of a Global Circular Economy Alliance to explore the definition of a ‘Safe Operating Space’, kick-starting a discussion on a possible international agreement on the management of natural resources. The Commission will lead efforts at the international level to reach a global agreement on plastics, and promote the uptake of the EU’s circular economy

approach on plastics. The EU will continue to advocate for the circular economy in its free-trade agreements, its bilateral, regional and multilateral policy dialogues and its international and multilateral environmental agreements – for example via Circular Economy Missions to partner countries. The Commission will step up cooperation with other regions, such as Africa. In 2021, the Commission will update the existing monitoring framework with indicators related to the current action plan and reflecting the interlinkages between circularity, climate neutrality and the zero pollution ambition. Indicators on resource use, including our consumption and material footprints will also be further developed. The Commission will also reinforce the monitoring of circular economy national plans and other national circular economy measures, including under the efforts to refocus the European Semester process towards integrating a stronger sustainability dimension.

The Commission will propose legislation on Sustainable Product Policy, to ensure that products placed on the EU market are designed to last longer, are easier to reuse, repair and recycle, and incorporate as much as possible recycled material instead of primary raw material. he Coronavirus pandemic represented one of the biggest challenges the packaging industry has ever faced. Responding to unprecedented levels of demand, it was incredible to be part of the carton and cartonboard industry’s response. Remaining fully operational - despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and threatened raw material shortages - to provide sufficient packaging and ensure the safe supply of food, pharmaceutical and hygiene products was no mean feat. There is no doubt that the agility, dedication and flexibility of the industry’s people played a vital role in minimising disruption during the initial phase of the pandemic, and for that packaging professionals, along with other key workers, deserve huge praise. In addition to working at full capacity, the industry stepped up to design and manufacture folding carton face shields to protect medical professionals against

Covid-19. Pro Carton is a recognised supporter of the Fiber Shield programme, an international coalition of leading paperboard packaging companies and supply chain partners, which donated more than two million paperboard-based face shields to key workers.

Meanwhile, we have supported parents and children by providing some fun activities, whilst using the opportunity to highlight the benefits of cartonboard as a packaging material to the next generation of consumers. Our home-schooling initiative – EduCarton – provides a variety of printable activities for younger children, such as ‘colour by numbers’ worksheets and cartonboard cut outs that children can then play with.

Pro Carton has kept its portfolio of popular Award Schemes open for 2020: the European Carton Excellence Awards, the Young Designers Award and the new Student Video Award

Confiserie Reber won the Sustainability Award for their Advent Calendar with Innovative Carton Inlay.

The EduCarton resources are themed around our ‘Carton Campaigners’: five cartoon characters that illustrate the 5Rs of Responsibility. The cartoon heroes were created to explain the five crucial actions that we believe will help us achieve a circular economy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Renew and Replace. As part of a consumer awareness campaign to highlight the eco-friendly benefits of paper-based carton packaging, we launched a series of animated videos featuring the five characters. Ricki Recycle demonstrated that increasing our recycling rates is a viable solution to the climate emergency. With 85% of paper and cartonboard packaging in Europe being recycled, the story explains the importance of recycling, in an easy to understand format for children. The video has been a huge success, with 500,000 views on Facebook! In Reneé Renew’s adventure, she explains that trees are a sustainable resource, and that by using renewable packaging and planting more trees, carbon emissions will reduce. The United Nations (UN) says “the climate that makes our planet habitable” comes from nature, and we hope to amplify this message to consumers, ensuring that they understand the cartonboard industry’s role in helping to maintain sustainably managed forests.

Above and Below: ProCarton launched a home-schooling initiative, EduCarton, providing a variety of printable activities for younger children, themed around the ‘Carton Campaigners’.

All our videos can be found on the Pro Carton YouTube channel. To bolster the learning opportunities even further, we adapted our TICCIT (Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees) programme so that it could be taught at home as well as in the classroom. It helps parents across Europe teach their children about the environment in a fun way throughout the year. The initiative aims to educate children about sustainability, renewability, and how European forests provide wood for making paper and packaging materials, before showing them how to plant a tree sapling (or a cutting or seeds) inside a biodegradable carton and then into the ground. Award schemes remain open Though there is no doubt the world has drastically changed around us, we believe now more than ever that we must continue to recognise and celebrate the amazing creativity, technical excellence, and exceptional innovation within the cartonboard industry. Despite the many challenges that the pandemic has thrown up, we decided to keep our portfolio of popular Award Schemes open for 2020: the European Carton Excellence Awards, the Young Designers Award and the new Student Video Award, despite the fact that schools and universities suspended in-person activities and shifted to online classes. Both of our student competitions can be worked on from home so made for ideal projects in these extraordinary times. Last year, we received over 450 entries for the Young Designers Award from 70

universities based in 24 different countries. The Young Designers Award challenges students to create an innovative cartonboard design, whether they are in lockdown or back in the classroom.

Some of the winning designs from the Young Designers Awards 2019: this year’s award challenges students to create an innovative cartonboard design, whether they are in lockdown or back in the classroom.

Early in 2020, we were excited to launch a brand-new award scheme aimed primarily at marketing, media, business and film students in Europe. The Student Video Award invites students to create a short promotional video about the advantages of cartons and cartonboard, with €5,000 going to the winning entry! Encouraged to ‘think outside the box’, the mentally stimulating challenge aims to both inform the student community of the environmental benefits of cartonboard, while also promoting the use of sustainable materials in packaging to the wider public. The longstanding European Carton Excellence Awards, now in their 24th year, sees partners from all levels of the supply chain submit their most creative and successful ideas on both virgin fibre and recycled fibre cartonboard. In addition to the main awards, entrants have the opportunity to win two special awards: the Save the Planet Award for the best carton that has replaced or reduced a less sustainable material, and the Innovation Award for the most innovative carton or material. Finally, we have launched a campaign to have the word ‘cartonboard’ recognised in the English dictionary. In a survey of over 1,000 UK consumers, it was found that 85% of those surveyed would choose a product packaged in cartonboard over plastic, yet the term remains in the English language wilderness. We believe it deserves a place in the dictionary because there are important properties that distinguish it from ‘cardboard’ – a more general term – and indeed corrugated cardboard, which is generally used for transport packaging.

Tony Hitchin, General Manager of Pro Carton, is pictured at London’s Charing Cross Library as Pro Carton attempt to get the word ‘cartonboard’ into the English Dictionary with the aid of a giant size English Dictionary made from cartonboard. IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

With Charing Cross Library in London as our backdrop, we unveiled a larger-than-life five feet tall dictionary made entirely of the recyclable, biodegradable and renewable packaging material. The giant dictionary was made by the designers at Graphic Packaging, using material provided by Stora Enso, and the open ‘pages’ featured the definition of cartonboard which we would like to see included in the modern lexicon. We hope to share good news on its inclusion in the not too distant future.

Corrugated Board & Boxes

We make the most extraordinary ordinary thing in the world,

the cardboard box Limerick Packaging has thrived and grown thanks to its unrivalled commitment to meeting the needs of its customers and by delivering ‘On Time, Everytime’.

W

ith what other packaging product can you take 230 grams of material, make a board and a box out of it that can hold, protect, inform, store and safely ship a product around the world and will resist a load of 500kgs? That can only be corrugated board and corrugated boxes. It is the classic case of the whole being much stronger than the sum of its parts. In much the same way, Limerick Packaging punches well above its weight by outshining its competition from the viewpoint of package design, very competitive pricing, quality to the very highest standards and all delivered, “on time everytime”. “This has been the secret of our growth over the 18-year history of the company, by being totally customer focused and by being dedicated to exceeding our customers’ expectations,” said Sales Director, Mike Boland. “It is central to everything we do, that our customer comes first”, Mike explained, “and nothing is allowed to

divert us from our goal of delivering ‘on time, everytime’.”

Extensive Product List Limerick Packaging can offer clients a comprehensive product portfolio, including: 1. Corrugated Boxes (RSC, Die-Cut, Sheets, Pads, Divs. etc); 2. and once again set new standards for customer service.”

“Our company now boasts a large array of products, as can be seen from the list provided, but the one we are most proud of is our speciality in Shelf Ready/Retail Ready packaging, which we can provide in standard flexo print, high quality post-print flexo or litho printed and laminated,” the Sales Director stressed.

Limerick Packaging has experienced considerable growth in Shelf Ready/Retail Ready packs and also in Litho-Laminated Corrugated packs, due to their ability to follow market trends, their ability to design effective solutions for their customers at very competitive prices and their ability to assist their customers to get products innovatively packed to market in a timely fashion. Walking through their factory, you cannot help notice the purposeful approach each member of staff has in everything they do. You also notice a steely determination in everyone to get everything right so that the company can succeed, grow and prosper. But the one thing that stands out above all is the focus on their customers’ needs, made obvious by the ultra large screens throughout the factory, tracking each order’s progress and put there to ensure all orders are delivered when they are required. Mike Boland also pointed to the fact that it is company policy to operate its own delivery fleet, as this provides the flexibility necessary to meet all customer needs on a daily basis.

ı

staff are very proud to count among their many customers some of the biggest names in the food industry and medical /pharmaceutical sectors. Once they get to fully understand their customers’ business, they stock product to Purchase Order and deliver daily or weekly as required. “With our famous ‘stock and serve’ model, the customer can call product off today before noon and we will deliver tomorrow, anywhere in Ireland,” boasted Mike Boland. “We are certified to ISO9001:2015 and FSC and we operate to ISO14001 and BRC/IOP,” Boland said, but the Sales Director is keen to point out that they always endeavour to improve their already stellar customer service. “We are never happy and we are always striving to improve our performance and to create the ultimate customer experience. We are close but we are not there yet,” he smiled. “And when we reach our goal, we will push on

Their commitment to meeting and exceeding customers’ needs has been a crucial ingredient in Limerick Packaging’s success, with many of the customers who were there 18 years ago still utilising the company for their packaging needs. “We have rewarded these customers with state-of-the-art design and problem solving skills, trouble-free trading, competitive pricing and quality products delivered ‘On Time Everytime’,” Managing Director, Connie Ryan explained. “We will continue to dedicate ourselves to our customers as we hope that many more fine customers will join in and be part of our success story.”

Aluminium Foil

Alufoil stands the test of time Patrick Altenstrasser, Communications Manager of the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA), reports on the latest trends and innovations in aluminium foil.

F

or a material with so many modern applications, it is hard to believe that this year marks aluminium foil’s 110th anniversary. The first rolling mill opened in 1910 and was soon followed by the first ever alufoil wrap for chocolate. The material has never really looked back and has a record of some spectacular achievements. Today, aluminium foil is still being used across an enormous spectrum of end

uses, protecting and preserving food and beverages; decorating wine, beer and spirit bottles; enabling new dosing and dispensing for pharmaceuticals; and offering luxury goods a dimension of quality and style – all through innovative packaging. The resilience of aluminium foil as a primary packaging material has been amply demonstrated in the recent economic headwinds, seen in both Europe and other markets globally. Despite less deliveries of its products in 2019, particularly in domestic markets, the European aluminium foil sector saw this drop limited, in terms of total tonnage delivered, to just one percent, compared with the record levels of production achieved in 2018. While European deliveries declined marginally, exports from the European zone put in a much more robust performance. Destocking ahead of the long Christmas and New Year holidays and continued sluggish demand probably accounted for sharper drops in both home and overseas markets at the end of 2019. Given the continuing trade dispute between China and the USA, little growth in demand in Europe and now the disruption to global trade caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, a continuing drop in exports and use for technical applications

is anticipated and may continue for some time. However, the increase in demand for packaged food domestically is certainly having a positive effect, offsetting somewhat the decline in exports. Throughout the past year, the industry drove forward an agenda focused on environmental responsibility, very much connected with the resource efficiency and sustainability of aluminium foil. The increasing influence of legislation and regulation within European economies continues to drive change, sustainable innovation and significantly greater recycling. To highlight these factors, EAFA undertook a campaign reinforcing the key attributes of aluminium foil.

responsibility, every aspect of aluminium foil was scrutinised by the judges. The issues of sustainability and resource efficiency remain a very high priority for packaging material suppliers, even taking into account the recent emphasis on hygiene and protection caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. EAFA, organiser of the competition, was not surprised to receive multiple entries in the Resource Efficiency category, where two winners were awarded. At the same time, it was very encouraging to see exciting and original marketing applications and clever products addressing very real, current consumer needs, taking well deserved awards.

Alufoil’s ‘Key Messages’ campaign

Consumer Convenience

The ‘Key Messages’ campaign asked the question ‘Why is aluminium foil great for packaging?’ A cleverly designed infographic gives an emphatic answer. The graphic covers the three main benefits of aluminium foil in packaging: as a highly effective material with unique properties; great resource efficiency; and its contribution to a circular economy. Each of these themes is highlighted clearly, in words and pictures, stressing the key elements of this narrative. Aluminium foil’s unique physical properties and barrier performances are shown, working together in its varied formats and applications. Next, its lightweight advantages, while maintaining a high barrier performance, are demonstrated. These save both material and energy resources, while at the same time helping to reduce food waste. Lastly, the need for proper collection is highlighted, as are the many industry initiatives to improve its recycling, so that we can recover as much aluminium material as possible. The infographic, which can be downloaded from EAFA’s website, comes in a simple one-page format and can be used for internal information in workplaces, or as an educational tool.

The EasyDoseLid from Constantia Flexibles won the Consumer Convenience award: it’s a lidding system, designed for solid consumer food products stored in liquids, such as mozzarella cheese, pickled cheese, pickles and olives, which become easily separable from the liquid thanks to this novel pouring system. A double layer of aluminium and a coextruded plastic, with special laser cutting, enables the liquid to be poured out before the solid content is dispensed.

Key design features were applied to add a significant amount of additional structural strength and an overall reduction in pack weight.

Technical Innovation Constantia Flexibles won a second award, this time in the Technical Innovation category, for its novel 3D sidewall embossing technology. This, as well as offering both optic and haptic differentiation. Forming is achieved in a single step, in-line process, during vertical deep drawing. This required the development of special tool parts, as well as modifications to the sidewall angles of the containers.

Flexible Packaging

Preventing packaging waste, reducing global warming A recent study reveals the benefits of flexible packaging when it comes to reducing carbon footprint and maximising resource efficiency.

A

recently updated and extended study by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (ifeu), commissioned by Flexible Packaging Europe (FPE), has underlined the original study’s findings, showing clearly that flexible packaging is a more effective route to resource efficiency and reducing carbon footprint than using rigid packaging formats or focusing entirely on recycling. The study uses a scenario in which all non-flexible packaging (i.e. rigid packaging) for Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs) are substituted by flexible packaging wherever possible. As carbonated drinks cannot be packed this way, for the purpose of the study, theoretical substitution excluded all beverages (as a conservative approach).

Reducing primary packaging waste It showed that, by substituting all rigid packaging of non-beverage FMCGs at the EU level, the amount of primary packaging waste could be reduced by 21 million tonnes per year. This means a 70% reduction of the total amount of nonbeverage FMCG primary packaging in the EU, highlighting the huge packaging waste prevention potential of flexible packaging. Even more striking are the consequences on the environment. By using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach, the study shows that such a theoretical substitution would decrease total Global Warming Potential (GWP) of all European nonbeverage FMCG primary packaging by 33%, even if it is assumed, for the purpose of the demonstration, that no material recycling processes for flexible packaging would take place. The opposite scenario – the substitution IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

The study simulated extreme scenarios related to global warming (Source: FPE).

in the EU of all flexible packaging used for non-beverage FMCG by rigid packaging formats – would increase total GWP of the primary packaging by about 30%, the study shows. This is despite the much higher actual recycling rates of rigid packaging. Indeed, even if the recycling rate of rigid packaging was raised to 100%, this theoretical substitution would still lead to 14% higher GWP, it says. In addition to GWP, the environmental impact of Abiotic Depletion, which refers to the use of non-renewable resources, and Use of Water have also been assessed using the LCA approach. The study shows very similar results in the same order of magnitude for all three impact categories.

A focus on prevention The report’s authors conclude that for packaging, the focus should not be on recyclability only but also and foremost on prevention. This can be achieved by a higher use of flexible packaging, which would lead not only to less primary

The study examined the potential reduction of primary packaging waste in the EU by using flexible packaging (Source: FPE).

packaging waste, they claim, but also to lower carbon footprint and use of resources. Conversely, a focus only on recyclability and achieving recycling targets might lead to the substitution of flexible packaging solutions by more easily recyclable rigid packaging. This approach would clearly be detrimental for climate change and resource efficiency, according to the report, besides running counter to the objective enshrined in the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive to prevent the production of packaging waste. About FPE Flexible Packaging Europe’s (FPE) members manufacture all types of flexible packaging. FPE comprises more than 80 small and medium sized companies, as well as the major European producers of flexible packaging for all materials. These companies cover more than 85% of the European flexible packaging turnover. Also, six national flexible packaging associations are members of FPE, ensuring consistency between national and European activities and lobbying. UK centre of excellence aims to go global

G

lass products have a vital role to play in our sustainable future, but all too often glass manufacturing is singled out as a carbon intensive

industry. Glass Futures, a UK organisation, has become the funding vehicle for the necessary bridge in technology between glass manufacturing now and in the low carbon future. With a board made up of key figures from industry and universities, Glass Futures connects the glass industry and academia to create an industry cluster to ensure increased productivity and sustainability in the sector. This not-for-profit company was created to allow the evolution of a centre of excellence in glass comprising R&D, innovation, technology incubation and implementation, training and up-skilling.

Central to this proposition is a demonstration- scale glass making facility of 30 tonnes per day capacity. This will provide a very realistic intermediate scale glass facility with a highly flexible configuration to accommodate the needs of float and container making from batch to product. A split fore-hearth design will provide for both IS equipment to fashion containers and scope for a tin-bath to float a continuous ribbon.

The global view of glass The global market for conventional glass manufacture in windows, automotive glass, containers and fibre is relatively stable. The market for specialist glasses for instrumentation, ICT, medical and defence applications is growing significantly. These

growing markets demand a research-led facility connected to a production unit that can bridge the gap between fundamental research at academic level and practical implementation at a manufacturing level. Glass Futures will bridge this capability to satisfy global demand in all related markets. The plan is to expand the project internationally, with the Glass Futures core facility acting as the global hub for both R&D/ Innovation and training/learning and development. From this core facility, other global manufacturing sites, with the size and staffing capability, will be sought to become functioning “spokes” with niche specialty function that augments the developing model to build a global network centred on the core hub.

Driving changes in technology “The very essence of Glass Futures is to drive changes in technology and to be the ‘go to’ place for this provision,” according to its mission statement. This is based on the premise of driving investment in glass research and development to new levels, as the organisation argues that glass will provide many solutions to future societal problems in the built environment, transport, communications, aerospace, defence, medical and science. Packaging Machinery

Craigavon-based JMC Packaging has been growing across Ireland and the UK for almost three decades thanks to its wide range of packaging machinery and service that is second to none, according to company founder Jim Cullen, who explains what sets the firm apart and what’s next for the business.

JMC Packaging: A DEDICATED SERVICE TEAM

O

ver the last three decades, brothers Jim and Mark Cullen have grown their machinery and packaging business, JMC Packaging Ltd, reaching out across a variety of sectors throughout the UK and Ireland. Indeed, since Jim and Mark set up shop 26 years ago, JMC Packaging has grown into a business which works with some of Ireland’s largest food firms and boasts a turnover in excess of £20 million. The business, which has its main base in Craigavon, Co. Armagh, is now one of Ireland’s leading distributors of both machinery and packaging materials and is investing in both its operations and people, as it expands its reach into new markets. Since its early days of fruit and vegetable distribution, the company has developed and expanded considerably, working across a range of diverse and burgeoning sectors, from meat and fish to pharma and many other industries. In 2008, the firm took on a majority shareholding in GSH Holdings Ltd in England, a move which allowed the company to offer services across a much wider swathe of business throughout the UK and Ireland.

Catering for a wide range of machinery needs JMC Packaging provides its customers with a wide range of machinery needs, along with the packaging material suited to its requirements. That includes a range of tray-sealing equipment, trays and lidding films, shrink-wrap machines and shrink film, flow-wrap machinery and films, label printing and application, as IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

well as weighing and filling solutions. In the last few years, JMC has strengthened its relationship with long-standing customers and industry giants. Its impressive client list includes such well-known firms as Moy Park, Keelings, Total Produce and convenience food brand, Mash Direct. One of the business’ key strengths is its ability to not only find the right packaging solution for customers, but its hands-on approach, as well as boasting local servicing, right on the doorstep of many of its customers. “We are responsible for all the machinery we sell to our customers across all sectors, including meat, pharma, pet food and sweets, and fruit and veg, to name a few,” Jim explains. “We have installed machinery in firms such as Mackle Pet Foods, Coughlan’s Bakery, East Coast Bakehouse,

Shannonvale Foods, Cartamundi Ireland and others. But we don’t stop there; with our dedicated service team, we also service the machinery, post installation.” The company’s spare parts and servicing department deals with everything from maintaining the machinery, ensuring it performs at its highest capability, along with providing training for companies, and general maintenance.

Why customers return to JMC Jim is extremely proud of the fact that 75% of JMC’s business comes from return customers, another sign of its outstanding service, attention to detail and ability to sustain long-term relationships with companies from across the UK and Ireland.

Packaging Machinery

JMC is the agent for tray-sealing and skin-packaging machines from Proseal across the entire island of Ireland, along with Ilapak flow-wrapping equipment (part of the IMA group), as well as numerous other machinery and material suppliers. JMC has grown to a team of around 30 staff at its main Craigavon site, with similar numbers at its operation in England. The business has been located at its current site at Seagoe Industrial Estate for the last six years, but Jim reveals the company has also taken on another site in the area to expand further still. JMC has continued to grow organically every year by working closely with both strategic supply partners and customers, helping to forge long term relationships with both.

Recyclable and compostable packaging As markets and demands change, JMC is making a bigger move towards recyclable and compostable packaging, as firms, from SMEs to multinationals, increasingly see the importance of ‘greener’ packaging and their contribution in combating climate change. “This market is growing yearon-year we are putting a strong focus on listening to what our customers’ needs are and being able to supply products that are kinder to the environment,” Jim notes. For Jim and the rest of his team, it’s about a customer being able to pick up the phone and receiving expert advice and immediate service. “It has been a very good year for all of us here, and business is continuing to increase,” Jim explains. Part of that is looking at new suppliers from across Europe and Asia, helping to bring more new products at competitive prices to its customers.

New flexible film slitting line The company has recently invested Stg£250,000 in a new flexible film slitting line that allows JMC to convert various films from master reel format with the facility to macro punch if required. These films include Polypropylene and various lidding films, including printed and plain, as well as other flexible films. This is an area which is seeing a major spike in demand as businesses, especially those selling fresh food, such as bakeries, begin to use more packaging products, in a bid to ensure that fresh food

products are hygienically packed and remain contamination free amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “We purchase materials in bulk, which allows us to be more responsive to our customers’ needs with our slitting machine; if they require something specific in a short time frame, we can respond immediately, whilst remaining competitive,” Jim explains. “This gives us a better edge. We are a growing business and employing more and more people. Even with the virus, we are performing well as a business, especially in certain sectors such as food.” And for Jim, the ongoing success of the firm has been down to a strong team effort, with some employees having worked for the company for close to 23 years. “As for looking ahead, JMC have a positive outlook towards further expansion and opportunities,” Jim concludes, “alongside our own natural organic JMC Packaging works with some of growth across the UK Ireland’s largest food firms and boasts a turnover in excess of £20 million. and Ireland.” IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

HAT’s DRIVING DESIGN IN 2020?

E

xciting trends in colour, illustration, form and other design elements are coming together to create unexpected product packaging that helps brands break through the clutter of competition that exists in 2020. We are seeing some of the most unique and innovative packaging trends in recent memory, and if brands and designers want to succeed, they will need to understand those trends and how to bring them to life.

Packaging Design

ı

33

We examine 11 of the top packaging design trends for 2020, which push the boundaries of the design form, from function to aesthetics.

1. PACKAGING THAT TELLS A STORY In 2020, brands need more than well-designed packaging to make an impact. If they really want to connect with their customers, they’ll need to take their packaging to the next level, using it to tell their brand story. While it’s important for all brands to leverage the storytelling packaging trend, it’s particularly important for products that are sold primarily online. Because eCommerce products don’t have the luxury of being seen and touched in real life, they need to leverage everything they have available to tell their brand story and build a connection with their audience, and that starts with their packaging. “In recent conversations with our partners, we’ve learned that packaging should tell a story as you unbox,” says Will Krispin, Director of Strategic

Development at 99designs. “They also mentioned the importance of packaging in the world of e-Commerce. Online, packaging has to carry more weight due to the lack of a store-front experience.” The continuing rise of subscription boxes will also play into the storytelling packaging trend in 2020. Branded packaging is especially important for subscription boxes, where the box itself becomes the only representation of the brand, since the contents feature other brands and products. In 2020, expect brands to take a more comprehensive approach to their packaging design and to use their packaging as an opportunity to tell their brand story, communicate their key messaging and build a deeper connection with their ideal customers. Packaging Sector Overview Design

2. Metamorphoses Consumers in 2020 are being overwhelmed with options, and with so many brands and products out there, it will be even more challenging for brands to create something unique and meaningful that resonates with their customers. That’s why artful designs that show fascinating ideas like “metamorphoses” are poised to be one of the biggest packaging trends in 2020, according to designer Mila Katagarova. Think of metamorphoses as design where there’s more than meets the eye. It’s where one design element goes through

a transformation (or, more accurately, a metamorphosis) into another. This optical illusion not only adds visual interest to packaging, but it also draws in consumers who want to see the intricate details of the full picture, which can help brands differentiate themselves from the competition, jump off the shelf and grab their customers’ attention with a deeper meaning. In 2020, expect brands to embrace this more artistic, avant garde packaging trend as a way to stand out from the crowd and create something new and different. 3. Retro-futurism Retro-futurism might seem like an oxymoron. But the truth is, retro and futuristic design can work well together, invoking both feelings of nostalgia (retro) and anticipation (futurism). 2020 will see package designers using the current gradient trend as a jumping-off point for creating packaging that pairs both futuristic and retro design elements to create remarkable designs that will appeal to a wide variety of consumers.

Above: Bright neon colours and gradients help to add a retro-futurism vibe to brands.

Expect plenty of neon colours, bold gradients, and retro design touches (like minimalist logos and retro-inspired typography) to come together in unique, unexpected, and on-trend ways. “Bright neon colours and gradients have been around for a good couple of years now and are still trending,” says designer goopanic. “They will shift more to the packaging territory to add a retro-futurism vibe to brands.”

4. Blurry colour splotches and blurred images Retro-futurism isn’t the only 2020 packaging design trend to emerge from the still-popular gradient trend. “A great trend in gradients is the use of spotted gradients, multi gradients and blurs,” says designer Obacht. The use of blurry colour splotches gives packaging a cool and edgy feel. This trend will take gradients to the next level, blurring the edges to create a more abstract look that will feel cutting-edge and design-forward in 2020. Also, expect designers to apply a blur to images, creating an abstract gradient effect that goes beyond colour, and will draw consumers in as they try to make out the image behind the blur.

The increased consumer focus on buying products from eco-friendly brands should see a flood of companies outside the more traditional, organic space start to embrace earth-inspired colour palettes.

5. Maximalism and heavily detailed packaging Minimalism will always have a place in package design. But as many experts have been predicting an economic downturn in 2020, even before the Covid-19 pandemic shook the world, more consumers will be looking towards a sense of opulence, luxury and extravagance in their products, which is why maximalism in packaging design is poised to be all the rage in the upcoming year. “As the world economy enters a slower pace, one of the trends in packaging design I see emerging is more luxurious, more attention-grabbing, with more intense, richer colours; ‘heavier’ designs, full of details and beautiful graphics that mark the quality of the product,” explains

designer Agi Amri. “People have always wanted a piece of luxury and beauty in their lives, and this notion gets even stronger as the times get harder.” 2020 is not going to be the year to keep it simple with package design. As consumers look for more of a high-end experience with their products (which is especially important when the economy may prevent other sorts of high-end experiences, like luxury vacations), more brands will start experimenting with a package design style that communicates a luxury experience and focuses on beautiful details. Expect more intricate and detailed designs; richer, deeper colour palettes; and a more prominent use of pattern. 6. Ecologically aware packaging Climate change has officially become a crisis, so one of the most important packaging design trends of 2020, without a doubt, sees brands taking a more eco-friendly approach to packaging. “As we dive deeper into the climate crisis, one of the biggest challenges for designers and clients in the next years, even decades, will be to find ecological,

plastic-free packaging alternatives to current materials,” explains designer, Obacht. Expect more brands to start exploring using more eco-friendly materials in their packaging, moving towards packaging that’s easily recyclable, minimising the amount of materials necessary for their packaging design, or even forgoing packaging altogether (like Lush’s Shampoo Bars, which allow

consumers to get the hair cleansing they need, minus the plastic bottle packaging). Obacht predicts this will push designers to think outside of the box and adjust their design style to suit this new packaging trend: “It will test us to come up with new ideas to design on rather flat coloured surfaces, like a typical cardboard package, and make us find out how to create a striking design on biodegradable packaging.”

7. Natural & earthy pastels As mentioned in the previous trend, taking a more ecological approach to packaging is going to be one of the biggest packaging trends in 2020. But expect the earth-inspired trend to extend past just materials, and directly into the colours brands choose to incorporate into their brand colour palettes. “The past few years were dominated by bright pastel colours and shiny glossy, even pastel metallic gradients. In 2020, however, brands are looking for more subtle and earthy tones for their IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

products,” says Obacht. “This is found especially in the organic food and beauty industry; all sorts of low saturated greens, blues and browns are trendy in this sector.” While more natural tones have been a go-to for organic companies for years, the increased consumer focus on buying products from eco-friendly brands should see a flood of companies outside the more traditional, organic space start to embrace earth-inspired colour palettes in 2020.

More brands are expected to start exploring using more eco-friendly materials in their packaging, moving towards packaging that’s easily recyclable, minimising the amount of materials necessary for their packaging design.

8. Neatly structured layouts There’s something inherently satisfying about structure in design. Not only is it visually appealing, but it also lends a sense of balance and order to design, which is why more neatly structured, ordered layouts are becoming a major trend in the packaging world. This packaging trend is all about the typography, or, more accurately, about how the typography is used in the design. Text, which is typically comprised of a variety of unique and interesting font combinations, is separated by clear lines that divide the space into neat and balanced spaces, making for easy readability and a sense of structure that appeals to consumers, and allows designers to take a more minimalistic approach to the rest of the design. While these typography-heavy packaging designs are already all over shelves, expect this trend to really hit its stride as we progress into the second half of 2020. Right: This Kombucha from La Luna Brewing is a fine example of a neatly structured layout, with the text separated by clear lines that divide the space into neat and balanced spaces, making for easy readability and a sense of structure that appeals to consumers.

Neatly structured layouts are expected to become even more popular in the coming months.

9. New constructive forms for traditional products

Designers are always searching for new packaging forms that grab attention. IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

Brands will forgo more traditional constructive forms (like your standard box or bottle) for more unique and outof-the-box packaging ideas. The most effective use of this packaging trend will see brands using constructive form as a way to strengthen their branding and tell their brand story (so, for example, a paint brand that transforms their packaging into the shape of a palette or a fresh produce delivery service that packages their fruits

and veggies in a bag constructed to look like a farmer). “Designers are always searching for new forms, each year we can see a lot of concepts that play with different forms of packages,” notes designer Mila Katagarova. “But this year, there are a lot of real projects that are already on shelves and show us new constructive forms for traditional products. I think we’ll see more throughout 2020.”

10. Holographic effects on black background One of 2020’s biggest packaging design trends is a play-off of gradients, and that’s holographic or iridescent packaging. This is all about the mesmerising effect of shiny, multicoloured metallics that designers are combining with cool graphics and black or white backgrounds for an edgy vibe. This trend is already in play in the packaging world. “What I saw in the past year is the upcoming rise of the

holographic packaging trend,” reveals designer Daria V., and we can expect to see more iridescent pastels and holographic effects in 2020. While this packaging trend has a distinctly feminine, Lisa Frank-inspired appeal, mixing in neutrals, like white or black, and opting for more muted, dark hues in the background can lend an edgier feel to these otherwise happy, youthful designs.

Designers are combining the mesmerising effect of shiny, multi-coloured metallics with cool graphics and black or white backgrounds for an edgy look.

11.Transparent packaging that allows colour to shine through Many products, like beverages or skincare products, have a colour all of their own, and in 2020, expect brands to play off their product’s colour and incorporate it into their packaging design. Using transparent packaging, like a glass bottle, that showcases a product’s colour is a win-win; it allows brands to take a more minimal approach to the design process and let

their product take centre stage, without sacrificing visual interest or impact with the final packaging design. More brands are experimenting with transparency, layering design elements of transparent materials and using the product’s colour as a design feature to add contrast and make those elements pop once the brand’s product is poured into it. Right: Roots Juice uses the natural colour of the product to form part of the packaging.

Food & Plastic

FSAI debates role of plastic in food sector ‘Food and Plastic – A Question of Taste?’, an open meeting hosted by the FSAI, provided a platform for experts to debate the use of plastic packaging in the food sector and the changing attitudes towards plastic use.

T

HE Science Museum in Dublin proved the perfect backdrop for the The Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s (FSAI) Food Safety Consultative Council open meeting to review and debate the role of plastic in the food sector: Food and Plastic – A Question of Taste? The day, which took place before the Covid-19 pandemic, involved an exploration of the role of plastics in the food sector and the consequences of its use. Television programmes such as Blue Planet have brought the impact of plastics on our environment very much into the public consciousness, painting plastics in a poor light and pushing the issue front and centre with consumers across the western world. It is true that plastic rubbish has had a huge impact on the natural world and that the way we are doing things now is simply not sustainable. However, it is also true that changing things will not be easy to do. Plastic is ubiquitous because it is so useful; without plastic packaging the supply chain as we know it cannot work. Transport of loose products over long IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

distances is not practical and introduces huge cross-contamination risks. Alternative packaging types all have their own consequences and were they to become as frequently used as plastic, there is no doubt they would have a huge impact on the environment too.

Utilising ‘good’ science A message repeated time and again on the day was the fact that we need to use good science to find solutions that will work for the long term and also be practical. That means that we will not only have to change the way we use plastics, we are going to have to change how we do everything and we need to change together: governments, brands, producers and consumers alike. According to Dr Pamela Byrne, CEO, FSAI, global production of plastics has increased twentyfold since the 1960s, with some 1.5m people employed in the plastic sector in Europe and over 25m tonnes of plastic waste generated every year. “Plastic is an important and ubiquitous material in our economy and daily lives,”

noted Dr Byrne. “It has multiple functions that help tackle a number of the challenges facing our society. However, we need alternative packaging and plastic solutions which can still do what they need to do, but do not negatively impact the environment. That means research is needed into new plastic alternatives, which will be complex and take time, as there is no one solution to date.” The FSAI chief described packaging for food as “a necessity as it is important for food safety and preservation. It also avoids unnecessary food waste and associated carbon emissions. Packaging is critical for providing information to consumers on the ingredients, allergens, shelf-life and provenance of food and it is vital for regulatory authorities for enforcement and food traceability if there is a food safety issue and a food product needs to be recalled from the market.”

Engaging with the public Ray Bowe, Chair, Food Safety Consultative Council, believes that events such as this open meeting give the general

Food & Plastic

public an opportunity to engage with the FSAI around topics of common interest, such as the relationship between plastic and food safety in the food chain. Such engagement is going to be very important if we are to find solutions that will work for society. “Research is evolving and needs further depth to better inform the right decisions that will protect both the food chain and the planet for the future,” Bowe stated. “Now more than ever, the issue of plastic pollution is causing worry to the general public, but industry needs packaging solutions to ensure food is safe. The world is at a turning point, where the role that plastic plays in more sustainable ways of feeding people safely is at the heart of global debate.”

Changing the view Jack O’Sullivan, Director, Zero Waste Ireland, called for a complete change in how people and industry use plastics: ”We have to take a totally different view of plastics - no longer manufacturing it for quick use and to be thrown-away; but either replace plastics entirely with other materials from renewable sources or manufacture sparingly and efficiently for long-term use and total recycling. We have to live within the carrying capacity of planet earth, and completely eliminate fossil fuels from our ‘diet’. This requires no more production of the plastics we currently use, all of which are made from oil derivatives. Instead there are plenty of replacement substitutes which we can make from plant materials which are renewable and recyclable.”

risk associated with microplastic exposure in humans. However, the lack of long-term studies on exposure to microplastics represents a significant knowledge gap in our understanding of these tiny entities and he suggested we need more research into the effects of long-term exposure.

Nestlé’s plastic pledge Anna Turrell, Head of Sustainability, Nestlé UK and Ireland, outlined how Nestlé is committed and investing to deliver 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025 across its vast portfolio of products. “As we work towards the realisation of a circular economy for plastic, it is imperative that we work together as industry, government and civil society,” Turrell stressed. “Plastic packaging plays an important role in safely delivering food and drinks to consumers and reducing food loss and waste, so we need to carefully consider alternatives before making changes. We believe that with effective collaboration, collection and recycling of plastic is not only possible, but can catalyse the change required to create a more effective plastics system in which plastics never become waste. We are committed to being an active and

ı

45

progressive partner to find solutions, whilst moving ahead to deliver 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025.” The Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences was established, dedicated to the discovery and development of functional, safe and environmentally friendly packaging solutions. Its focus includes recyclable, biodegradable or compostable polymers, functional paper, as well as new packaging concepts and technologies to increase the recyclability of plastic packaging. “New solutions will be tested in various product categories, before they are rolled out across Nestlé’s global portfolio,” Turrell explained. The only we way we are going to find solutions to the problem of plastic packaging is by using good science and working together across all parts of society to implement changes that provide solutions that work for all. The FSAI is keen to keep the conversation going and encourages people looking to learn more to visit FSAI.ie. The above meeting and debate took place before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Microplastics and humans Focusing on microplastics in particular, Professor Gordon Chambers from Technological University Dublin’s School of Physics, Clinical and Optometric Science explained that, “Tackling plastic pollution represents a significant challenge to society. First, we have to break society’s addiction to single-use plastic to help turn the flow of plastic into the environment off. Secondly, we need to deal with the legacy plastic that is clogging our environment. This plastic litter degrades over time to produce tiny fragments of plastic called microplastics, which can potentially enter into the food chain and be subsequently consumed. Other pathways for exposure to microplastics exist; including airborne microplastics.” Professor Chambers did point out that there is no evidence of any specific health

Technology

Looking for a retail tech revolution?

It starts with the packaging!

E

very business wants to cut costs and increase profits. Almost every business, nowadays, also wants to improve environmental performance. Often, the two go hand in hand: data shows that three out of four millennials are prepared to pay more for a sustainably produced product. For retail companies contending with traditionally slim margins and fierce competition, these things are especially important. So, how to create a leaner, greener retail operation? Unsurprisingly, the answer is technology. Perhaps more surprising for some is where to start: the technology of packaging.

RFID is key Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology has been around for some time now, but what is new is the ability to cost-effectively print an RFID label onto paper or fibre, with no need for plastics or harmful chemicals. This is the gamechanger because it means RFID technology can be incorporated into all sorts of products and packaging without an impact on waste streams and recycling, and without inflating costs. That brings a IRISH PACKAGING & PRINT

Stora Enso, a leading provider of renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wooden constructions and paper globally, believe that technology is the answer to making operations such as packaging ‘greener’ for retail companies. number of innovations out of the realm of ‘what if’ and firmly into ‘why not?’.

The RFID difference The ability to inexpensively track every package or product is a revolution for inventory and supply chain functions. A 2016 survey from EKN-Kurt Salmon estimated a 12% return on investment (ROI) for reduced time and labour costs, mainly through more efficient or removed cycle counts, 10.3% for improving backroom to front-of-store inventory accuracy and 10% for increased store replenishment. Real-time, accurate data is transformative for keeping tabs on a high-volume, high-speed retail environment. Another major advantage of RFID tags are the strides they offer in tamper proofing. An anti-tamper seal incorporating RFID technology can easily be checked at each

point of the supply chain and a digital stamp records the time, location, reading device and package status, storing this data in the cloud. If a problem is detected, it can be narrowed to the precise point in the supply chain it occurred and alert retailers immediately. Customers can also interact with the RFID tag using their smartphone to verify their packages are un-tampered-with, building trust with the retailer. Once customers start using phones to interact with packages, the possibilities extend far beyond tamper proofing. With use of NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled phones, the entire customer product experience can be reimagined. Interacting with a food package, for example, could bring up information such as best before dates and recycling advice. Or a retailer could use this vector to advertise promotions and special offers,

Technology

Äą

47

events or similar products the customer might like. This could both help retailers boost their own sales and also create new revenue streams through advertising or marketing partnerships.

Back to bricks and mortar? RFID technology is undoubtedly a boost to e-commerce, but could it also be a lifeline for beleaguered bricks and mortar stores, too? The cashless, till-less store concept has attracted a lot of attention, enabling automatic tracking of what customers put in their basket and charging their accounts afterwards; however, there are less extreme implementations as well. The smart-shelf concept can revitalise the in-store experience. A smart shelf uses weight and RFID technology to detect which product has been lifted from the shelf. A display can then alert the customer to product characteristics, special offers and other product recommendations. The process can become interactive, offering the customer a deeper, more informationrich experience. An extension of this is the concept of New Retail, where unmanned e-kiosks in non-traditional point of sale environments, such as offices, hotels or transportation hubs, facilitate on-the-go purchases using a smart phone. No doubt this is only the tip of the iceberg and savvy retailers and marketers will find many more innovative ways to use smart, RFID technology to improve profits and the customer experience.

origins and recyclability, they can also result in reduced packaging size and weight. This means more products per shipment, less fuel consumption and therefore reduced costs and emissions savings. For those who embrace both the digital and analogue technological revolutions in packaging, the opportunities are staggering. A more efficient, precise and cost-effective way to do business, opening up a whole new type of customer experience and all the while reducing environmental impact – and winning plaudits and custom in the process. So, if a retailer is looking for a tech revolution, a good place to start might be with the packaging.
