CCRCs offer residents a range of living options along with social, recreational, and cultural activities typically found in retirement communities. They also offer a complete range of services (known as a “continuum of care”) ranging from independent and assisted living to skilled nursing services, all at one location.

CHANGE YOUR CARE, NOT YOUR COMMUNITY

Residents usually enter a CCRC at the independent-living level. If their level of care needs changes later, they can move to another area if necessary. Residents will not have to worry about changing communities – that’s the major benefit of choosing a CCRC. Residents can stay in the same familiar surroundings they’ve come to know and appreciate.

If a resident begins to need help with the activities of daily living, the CCRC will provide care similar to that in an assisted living community. Help with dressing, walking, grooming, and more will be provided, though a move to another wing may be necessary depending on the facility.

If the resident develops an illness or experiences a health emergency such as a fall or stroke, they will likely be moved to an onsite skilled nursing wing. Unlike regular assisted living facilities, CCRCs can provide skilled nursing onsite. Once the resident recovers, they are free to move back to their assisted or independent living apartment.

CCRCs offer security. No matter how a resident’s health changes, their needs will be met. This gives older adults the option to live in one location for the rest of their lives, with much of their future care already figured out. This can provide comfort and ease stress for both residents and their loved ones.

All that being said, all this comfort and ease comes at a price. If a resident values independence over security, a CCRC may not offer the best solution. And CCRCs usually require a major entrance fee in addition to monthly charges. Expect a large upfront deposit to prepay for care and also monthly charges ranging in the thousands. The costs can vary depending on the resident’s health, the type of housing they choose, whether they rent or buy, and the type of service contract selected. Options such as housekeeping, meal service, transportation, and activities can also incur additional costs.

Plan to spend time in each part of the facility; you may need assisted living or skilled nursing care at some point. Request a weekend or week-long stay to ensure that the facility is the right choice for you.
