REVATHI PILLAI Architecture is never devoid of multiple dimensions. According to me it is an amalgamation of international policies, economic strategies, social attributes, local site context and multiple other parameters. Hence every project that is part of this portfolio follows an intense research oriented design process across all scales. My strength lies in understanding this complex mesh and unentangling the core issue that needs to be addressed by the architecture. Different documentation process like mapping, matrixes, timelines, etc. have been used to streamline all the learning’s of the analysis to derive to an architectural concept and program organizational diagrams for all the scales from urban interventions to micro building detail. This portfolio will walk you through all my potentials of strategic planning, organizational design tactics, design for multiple scales, hybrid buildings, visualization skills etc. I am sure that the next few minutes invested on the portfolio will be worthwhile.

TRANSFERIUM _ A POINT OF EXCHANGE Ciudad Juarez, Mexico The MSc. graduation project dealt with understanding the implications of Neo liberal policies on the city of Juarez which lies on the US - Mexico border. In 2009 Ciudad Juarez was rated as “the most violent zone in the world outside of declared war zones due to high crime rates, femisides, homicides, corruption, drug trafficking and multiple other problems. The city is also presently facing massive exodus and the abandoning of large portions of its housing stock due to the increase in violence and a prevailing low intensity war between the state and the drug cartels. The reasons for this asymmetrical development are multiple and point towards a complex mesh of forces that transgress the scope of the built environment. They encompass entangled dimensions of political economy and socio-economic developments, which eventually affect the built environment. With this background a six month intense research was carried out and a counter proposal group strategy was proposed on a prototype site Riberas Del bravo and eventually an Urban & architectural intervention was designed. Thus as part of my graduation project I designed a collective transport system comprising of three design elements the Transferium hub, the bus stops and the routes on the prototype site.

CIUDAD JUAREZ INFRASTRUCTURE MAP

This map illustrates the infrastructure connectivity and mobility of Juรกrez. The airway and railway network enable international and national transport. A fixed system for internal public transport (i.e. tram or metro) is lacking, making the city heavily dependent on its road network for transport within the city. The city centre has dense network of primary and secondary roads, but the new peripheral residential developments are sparsely connected with the City centre due to lack of infrastructure development.

CIUDAD JUAREZ MOBILITY SUMMARY MAP

The peripheral social housing developments are between 13 and 21 km from the central bus station and the city center. Despite this sprawl there is very little public transport and the existing public transport does not connect to the urban facilities that it is expected to. The transport system becomes defined in two zones in the center and the periphery but remains sparse in between. The north-south layout of the highways and the lack of east-west connection emphasizes the traffic flow between US and Mexico. Thus one of the contradictory dialectics that appears is the mobility of goods versus the stagnancy of people.

STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR THE PROTOTYPE SITE RIBERAS DEL BRAVO, CIUDAD JUAREZ

PHASE 2

PHASE 1

Phase 1 remedies focused on enhancing and using the exsisting infrastructure more efficiently for the redevelopment of the site.

PHASE 3

Phase 2 proposes formation of coperatives and development of new local organizations to generate and strengthen the local community economy, internal connectivity and markets.

Phase 3 proposes formalization of the organization and representation of issues at the government level and focus on enhancing connectivity with the city, metropolitan and Nation.

The City of Juarez is composed of multiple isolated nodes lacking political centers, economic stability, infrastructure, services and is very sparsely connected with each other and the center. Thus the city of Juarez depicts a polycentric model but a false one as none of these nodes are independent and self-sufficient. In this false polycentric model one of the nodes, namely Riberas del Bravo GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF THE FALSE POLYCENTRIC MODEL

was chosen as the prototype site and a proposal was designed to address the issues and create ripples and influence the other nodes in the city.

The strategic plan for Riberas del Bravo dealt with densifying the two ends and de-densifying the center to allow Urban agriculture. The central spine which is a sewage channel at present is redesigned as public promenade that connects all the different sectors of the residential development. All along this COUNTER PROPOSAL FOR THE FALSE POLYCENTRIC MODEL URBAN STRATEGY FOR THE TRANSPORT HUB

The core design idea dealt with developing a time based concept, that allowed hybridization of the programme and hence catered to both peak and anti-peak hour differently. Firstly a strong east west axis was developed to regulate and accentuate the flow of people along the canal & public promenade proposed as part of the group strategy. These east west axis were flanged by three

pavilions serving the Transferium and

Community center on the two edges and a multipurpose market space at the center. The central multipurpose market space manifested itself further as Hawking zone, courtyard, Mobile Market courtyard and Permanent Market. During the peak hour the Transferium expanded into the central multipurpose space and during the anti-peak hour the community market/activities

PUBLIC SPACE for Universiteit Van Amsterdam Amsterdam, The Netherlands The project dealt with designing a hybrid building for University van Amsterdam to provide an interaction hub for the students, staff and the citizens. The project aimed to reassert the relationship between city and university. The extremely complex and hybrid program aimed to provide 5000 square meters of Conference Hub and University Lecture Hall combined with a 2000 square meters 2-stars hotel and a 1000 sq.m refectory/low budget restaurant and cafeteria. The design is a collection of multiple courtyards acting as the congregation point, strategically placed to accentuate student interaction along with cultural activities and caters to different users. The courtyards are also differentiated on the degree of privacy they offer. It also provides platform for catering different UVA campus activities and public programmes. The design unravels itself as a green terrain to generate a landmark image for the building and thus attract the citizens to become part of the UVA campus.

REJUVENATING ELLEWOUTSDIJK FORT Borsele, The Netherlands The project was part of RMIT (Restoration, Modification Intervention & Transformation) studio and dealt with the rejuvenation of the historical landmark Ellewoutsdijk fort. The Borsele municipality had recently restored the fort building and was looking forward for proposals to rejuvenate the fort which lies in a very strategic location with close proximity to the international connection, Westerschelde tunnel. The Municipality of Borsele, Residents of Ellewoutsdijk and Natuurmonument had different vested interests in rejuvenate the fort like promote the tourism, escalate the state revenue, preserving the history and promoting the nature tourism prevalent in Zeeland. My project was unique, as I believed that the fort was complete by itself hence dint build anything inside the fort but left it virgin and chose to build multiple pavilions around the fort to escalate public activity in the area. The project included design of four small pavilions to cater different groups and activities in the area, like nature cycling, bird watching, tourism and community activities of the local residents. The four pavilions were placed strategically to generate different routes and movement patterns in and around the fort. Thus the whole idea dealt with rejuvenating the fort and the village around by increasing touristic activities and accelerating inflow of revenue for the government without actually modifying the historical landmark.

CAN WE? MAKE MORE THAN A CINEMA Berlin AEDES, Germany We reinterpreted the brief to include a film school. This educational approach to arthouse cinema encourages interaction between cinema and the community. The film school hosts various functions including workshops, screenings and film-making The urban strategy consists of a bowl shaped public space which opens to the street. This bowl is intersected by an axis that links the existing parks behind the site to the Wedding S-bahn station. The project aimed at developing two layers: public at ground floor level and film related functions lifted above. An open and welcoming public space provides a new social platform for the community. This public space was created by scooping out the existing ground terrain. There are diverse spaces for multiple activities e.g. outdoor markets, film making, large public events including sports event screenings and concerts, surfaces for skaters, retail functions related to cinema, cafĂŠ terrace and more.

By lifting the picture house onto a pedestal and making it float we are treating it as an icon. The open nature of the design provides views of the icon from all directions. The facades can be used for large scale movie projections. Open air screenings can be seen from the S-bahn, creating a memorable landmark for passers-by.

EMPOWERING THE COMMUNITY on the periphery of Mumbai Mira Bhyander, India The project aimed to provide a strong infrastructure setup in the region of Mira Bhyander, situated in the periphery of expanding the mega metropolitan Mumbai city. The entire region was studied in detail in Urban design studio under four main headings titled: Land-use, Historical Development, Land ownership and Economy. This Urban study lead to selection of nine potential sites which lacked basic amenities and infrastructure, which were further researched and analyses in detail to derive to a problem statement. With this departure point each of us chose one potential site, critically analyzed the problem statement and derived to a programme statement that empowers the existing community by providing essential infrastructure facilities. Kashimira , the chosen site for my project is a small poor community living in slum lacking basic amenities like health facilities, workshops, community spaces etc. Thus the whole design dealt with providing infrastructure facilities like hospital, training centers, workshops, local retail centers, community spaces and recreational areas. The basic design concept dealt with developing a grid of 5x10m, which was laid on the site and Corrugated modular boxes were used as design elements which allowed flexible growth and also allowed future Expansion. These boxes were laid in different permutations and combinations depending on the programme requirement.
