Pumpkin time For some Oswestry folk Llynclys Hall Farm, near Oswestry, is still known as the ‘Pumpkin Farm’. Not surprising really, seeing as owners Richard and Lynda Jones harvest more than 20,000 pumpkins a year there. Even the shop’s logo features the large orange Halloween squash. The farm started growing its own vegetables and opened its award-winning farm shop 20 years ago but has really carved out a niche for pumpkin supplies. The farm harvests between 20,000 and 30,000 pumpkins every year and Lynda says that pumpkins are now their biggest business. “We’re even busier for Halloween than we are for Christmas,” she says. “We have to take on extra staff to cope with demand. “In fact we’re the largest pumpkin growers in the area and we can supply all shapes and sizes. We also grow summer squash, winter squash and gourds.” The shop’s Pumpkin Barn is open daily from 15 October between 9am-7pm at the farm shop and pumpkins are also on sale at the Llynclys Hall Farm stall at Oswestry Indoor Market, Bailey Head. They also sell everything you need to carve your pumpkin for Halloween. “People come from all over the region to buy our

pumpkins, not just locally. Some of our customers come from as far away as Manchester,” adds Lynda. Llynclys Hall Farm Shop was opened in 1995 by Richard and Lynda Jones. The family has run the farm for generations, farming beef cattle and crops, but the couple decided it was time to diversify and sell their own crops. They converted an old workshop into a farm shop, and started growing their own vegetables, including their popular pumpkins.

The Derwen group of Riding for the Disabled has just celebrated 40 years at the reins for riders with learning difficulties and disabilities. The group, which was originally founded by Lily Morgan and Mary Clay for the students of Derwen College in May 1976, celebrated this milestone in the Boathouse in Ellesmere. After 15 years of riding at Prescott’s Riding Centre in Baschurch the stables have closed but the group now meets at the Walford Equestrian Centre in Baschurch on Thursday mornings. Spokesperson Liz McBrien said: “Our aim is to let the riders really enjoy the riding but also to encourage them to use different skills while interacting with the ponies. This helps their self-confidence but also improves their balance and posture. This is achieved by keeping the lessons varied and also doing other activities such as games and dressage to music. “We are always very grateful to hear from new volunteers to help us and we still have spaces for a few more riders.” For more information email derwenrda@gmail.com for details.

Dave Andrews raised more than £15,000 for cancer charities by organising Oswestry’s Big Walk

Celebrated local author Dave Andrews author of the book The Oswestry Round spoke to members of Oswestry Rotary Club about his recent challenge. Dave was creator of the Oswestry Round Challenge, a 33-mile circular walk centred on Oswestry. The first organised Oswestry Round Big Walk event took place over two days during the summer when walkers were invited to attempt the route as a one or two-day challenge. The project aimed to raise money for both Cancer Research UK and for the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre in Shrewsbury, where Dave was treated in 2014 and is now Oswestry area co-ordinator, and where Dave’s wife Jane also works as a fundraiser. Dave explained that he had wanted to give something back for his treatment. His book has sold more than 600 copies, raising £3,000 for the charities, with the Big Walk Challenge itself raising a further £15,000. With the unusual title ‘From Gobowen to Everest’, Dave is now working on another book for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund based on a diary he kept on a previous trip to Everest Base Camp.

n The sun shone on revellers at The Sweeney Hall Hotel’s first gin festival

Sweeney Hall Hotel’s first Gin Fest has been toasted as a roaring success. Hotel manager Lindsay Steele said that the two-day event, which featured 1,000 people and 24 different gins, was a triumph. “As our first Gin Fest, we could not have wished for it to have gone any better, with the weather on our side, gin flowing freely, plenty of great food and some amazing artists entertaining the crowds,” she said. “We would like to thank all those who attended and all of the staff. It was a great event and I can’t wait for next year!”

Volunteers required with Halloween spirit Whittington Castle is looking for volunteers who are happy to lose their heads and get in the spirit of Halloween. The castle, near Oswestry, is looking for extras to play ghosts, including the headless horseman, in their forthcoming Ghost Tours, which take place during the October Half Term from Tuesday 25 until Saturday 29 October, starting around 6.30pm. Castle manager Sue Ellis said: “We need some extra people to play ghosts, adults as well as children. We’ll provide the costumes and make up and the script. Extra people are also useful to help back stage with costumes and make up and props. If you think you know someone or can help yourself then please get in touch. It is great fun.” The Halloween family fun continues at the castle on 30-31 October for a Halloween Day and evening events. Whittington Castle has a history of ghostly goings-on and was visited by the Most Haunted

television crew in July. It is steeped in historical tales of warfare, treachery, death, myths, legends and many ghosts and strange happenings. Reported sightings have included a hooded figure seen under the gateway, a phantom blacksmith in a leather apron and the faces of ghostly children seen peering out of an upstairs window. The castle even runs overnight vigils for brave ghost hunters. Sue says: “We’ve had many overnight vigils that have picked up all sorts of vibes though no-one has been able to put their finger on exactly what it was. I think every group has found something they couldn’t explain. “One paranormal group ran a spiritual meeting where they reported that the pencil drew something that looked very much like an oldfashioned iron. They couldn’t have known that the court room had also once been used as the ironing and pressing room.” Visit www.whittingtoncastle.co.uk or contact Susan Ellis on 01691 662500 to volunteer.

Something fishy going on at town’s film club Fish out of water is the theme of Oswestry Film Society’s third season of films showing at the town’s Kinokulture Cinema. The society is showing films on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from now until December. Films include A Hologram for the King starring Tom Hanks on 4 October, classic Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot on 1 November and Midnight Cowboy on 6 December. Film Society member Michael Hudson said: “Our third season has the theme ‘Fish out of water’ and we are screening modern and classic films about people in unfamiliar situations. From Tom Hanks in A Hologram for the King and George Clooney in Money Monster, we have something for all film buffs to enjoy. We have two classics with both Midnight Cowboy and Some like it Hot expected to be popular.”

Killer show The Ladykillers by Graham Lineham will be playing at Attfield Theatre, at the Guildhall, Bailey Head, in Oswestry, from 3-8 October. Founded in 1928 by GW Attfield, the Attfield Theatre Company describes itself as a small but vibrant amateur dramatic society. It was in 1972 that Oswestry Town Council allowed the group to use a redundant courtroom in the Guildhall. The enterprising amateur thespians discovered some cinema seats being thrown out and soon had seating for their venue as well. After changes of name and premises and a temporary stop due to dry rot, the company is now back hosting its own plays within a 97-seater theatre in Oswestry’s Guildhall. The rest of the season continues with comedy The Titfield Thunderbolt from 5-10 December, The End of the Affair by Graham Greene from 27 February to 4 March 2017 and Arcadia by Tom Stoppard from 14-20 May 2017. For more information visit www. attfieldtheatre.co.uk or telephone the box office on 01691 680222.

Challenge for Hope Oswestry Sainsburys Manager, Allister Moutrie, took to his bike to cycle 170 miles in three days to raise money for children with such severe conditions they are not expected to live into adulthood. During September all Sainsburys stores in the north took part in the Sainsburys Big Bike Ride which saw staff from every store cycling to raise monies for their nominated charity. The Oswestry store nominated Allister to take part for charity Hope House. Anyone who would like to support Allister with his fundraising can make a donation at www.justgiving.com/Allister-Moutrie2.

An Oswestry charity shop is now on the look-out for extra volunteers – and the new recruits can work as few or as many hours as they like. Drivers and shop workers are at the top of the ‘wish list’ for the Relate shop in Albion Hill. “If people just want to do one hour a week, that’s fine,” said Jo Gurney, area retail manager. “We’d still love to hear from them. Or they could do one day a week or they could do a whole week. We want to hear from anyone who can help in any way.” The Oswestry shop is one of 10 across Shropshire run by Relate, the counselling and support charity. T

here have been many changes at Derwen College, near Oswestry, since it was founded in 1927 for young people with disabilities and learning difficulties. The college, which prides itself on creating futures, is appealing to the public to look to the past in a bid to help collate photos and memories to celebrate the big 90th birthday next year.
The specialist independent residential college, situated in the village of Gobowen two miles from Oswestry, plans to mark its nine decade anniversary with events and celebrations over the course of 2017, including a look through the establishment’s fascinating history. Tonia Davies, marketing co-ordinator at the college, says: “We are asking for people’s memories of Derwen College from over the years to add to our archives and our rich story.” On 4 and 11 October, people are invited to attend drop-in coffee mornings from 10am12pm at the Garden Centre Cafe, to share their memories of Derwen, either as students and their families, employees or visitors. Derwen College was founded in 1927 by Dame Agnes Hunt at her Baschurch home, 15 miles from its current location in Gobowen.
Agnes Hunt developed osteomyelitis in her hip as a child and as a result was in permanent pain and found walking difficult. Despite this, she trained as a nurse and opened her home, Florence House, as a convalescent home for ‘crippled’ children, extolling the benefits of open-air treatment.
Agnes had already established the Orthopaedic Hopsital in Oswestry along with Robert Jones, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, but this wasn’t enough for the ambitious nurse.

n Above left: Students and staff were excited by a

visit from the Duchess of Kent in 1952 n Right: Derwen College was once home to a Boot Shop, which made special footwear for people with disabilities. There was also a department called Surgical Appliances, which made artificial limbs and braces n Right: An original souvenir programme from the college’s Grand Fete in 1930

In 1927, with the approval of the education authorities and the financial assistance of the Shropshire Orthopaedic Hospital, a house adjacent to the hospital called ‘The Derwen’ was purchased, along with 35 acres of land. Here Dame Agnes founded the Derwen Training College where physically disabled young people could learn a trade and become either partially or wholly self-supporting. During World War II, Derwen became a hospital and continued as a rehabilitation centre for many years afterwards. Dame Agnes continued to devote herself to Derwen until her death in 1948. Her final dream, a housing development purpose-built for the disabled, called ‘Agnes Hunt Village’, was started in 1952.The bungalows are still used today and at the entrance to the ‘village’ is a memorial to Dame Agnes Hunt.

Tonia says: “Dame Agnes Hunt was a visionary but the current facilities at Derwen would exceed even her most ambitious dreams. Over the years major building projects have transformed the college campus. A swimming pool was built in 1970. In 1982 the concert hall was completely destroyed by fire, but was rebuilt the same year. 1986 saw the formation of Derwen Enterprises as a more commercial environment and in 1999 the Orangery Restaurant opened. In 2013, the college opened the Bradbury Food Production Centre to provide work experience for students and to make and sell jams and chutneys. ”The college has a lot to celebrate in 2017 and in the meantime we are asking people for any memories they may have of Derwen College.” Contact derwendays@derwen.ac.uk or call 01691 661234.

FILM

History in the making at Park Hall The authentic war trenches at Oswestry’s Park Hall Farm Experience has helped bring history to life for a budding film director

n Actors from Rich in History ensured that details were accurate during filming of A Long Way Home

A

young Shropshire director has spent his summer getting a glimpse of the horrors of life in the trenches shooting his latest film at Park Hall Farm Experience, near Oswestry. Bridgnorth actor and director 19-year-old Jake Elcock, a film student at The University of Westminster, has spent much of his summer holidays back home in Shropshire working on a 15 minute film set during World War I, some of it on location in Oswestry. The World War I trenches at Park Hall Farm Experience are the perfect backdrop for his heartwrenching story of fictional Captain Hemingway – a man who leads his men over the top to certain death in the final few days of WWI. Park Hall Farm owner Martyn Hughes allowed Jake and his film crew free access to the attraction which was opened to the public in 2014. The trenches, constructed in conjunction with Oswestry Town Museum, offer a glimpse into a soldiers’ life in the cramped bunkers during the Great War. The trenches were created at the Park Hall Countryside Experience, which was the site of one of the largest training camps in the country; it was built in 1915 and saw many soldiers, including Oswestry-born war poet Wilfred Owen, spend time there on their way to the front. Jake has been preparing for this historic drama A Long Way Home for years, researching and collecting props from the period. He has enlisted friends and family and re-enactors from Rich In History – the group who also appeared in the famous Sainsbury’s Christmas Truce advert last year. Through his passion and perseverance Jake has persuaded everyone including Park Hall Farm to allow them to use their time and premises for free. “I’d been to Park Hall Farm Experience many years ago but only recently found out they had

filming begins again

the Trenches Experience here,” he admits. “I had been looking for the ideal location to film and was delighted to find exactly what we were looking for in Shropshire.” The trenches were closed to the public for periods over two days for the filming. Jake’s parents, Marguerite and Julian Elcock, are directors of Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA) in Bridgnorth and Wolverhampton, and many of the PQA ‘family’ were pleased to lend their support. The film’s lead actor is teacher Ben Seager who runs the comedy and acting classes at the PQA. Jake says: “The film is set in the trenches of the Somme towards the end of that horrific battle. The soldiers of the fictional Shropshire Regiment have spent months in the same set of trenches unable to make progress but are required to hold their position. “The film follows Captain Hemingway who leaves his comfortable home in Shropshire to join his regiment in the trench shortly before the end of the war.” Jake says that the film is fictional, although the plot is inspired by his research. “I’m not calling it a war film as it’s a human story about one man,” says Jake. “It’s vital that the horror and bravery of WWI

is kept alive and never forgotten. Shropshire has a rich war history which I wanted to represent. It was probably the worst conflict in history. If we can give it a voice even if it’s in some small way, then that’s important. There’s no propaganda, just the telling of a human story. We didn’t want to misrepresent anyone so used the many stories to create an imagined one.” With the aid of crowd-funding and other backing, Jake hopes The Long Way Home will lead to a full length film to coincide with the centenary of the end of WWI in 2018. Jake hopes to release the film on 11 November 2018. Jake began his career in front of the camera as a child actor, working on a touring production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast where he played Chip the teacup. A Saturday job working at PQA led to his interest in film and film making. He started off as a precocious young actor and then got bossy and decided to direct,” his mum Marguerite laughs. Talking after the filming Jake said: “It was some of the most fun I’ve ever had on set with a phenomenal team. Its been a fantastic summer!” For updates on the film’s progress and details of how you can contribute to the crowd funding appeal go to www.trenchfootfilm.wordpress.com

EDUCATION

In our monthly roundup we take a look at what Shropshire students have been getting up to Sir John Talbot School Sixth Form students were rewarded for all the hard work over the year with some exceptional A level results. Students celebrated a pass rate of more than 95% with some superb individual efforts. Brett Twist (pictured) achieved four A Levels with grades A*, A, A and B.

Students from schools across the region got stuck into surgery during hands-on work experience at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, near Oswestry. Dozens of students enjoyed a corporate work experience week with the hospital, which included shadowing different wards and departments, learning about different roles within the Trust and having a go at surgery in a mock theatre. Schools and colleges that took part included North Shropshire College, Ellesmere College, Welshpool High School, Shrewsbury Sixth Form, Oswestry School and The Marches School in Oswestry. Pictured dissecting an eye as part of the theatre day are from left: Ffion Bell from Oswestry School, Eleanor Brown from Shrewsbury Sixth Form and Megan Wilde from Welshpool High School.

North Shropshire College in Oswestry and Reaseheath College in Cheshire are to form a federation this year. Both colleges specialise in land-based subjects and technical and vocational qualifications, are in a strong phase of continuous growth and improvement and share a long history of delivering quality education. Although both colleges are committed to working together, they will remain independent and retain their own names and campuses within the federation. Pictured are Reaseheath principal Meredydd David, Richard Ratcliffe chair of governors at Reaseheath, Gillian Richards, chair of governors at North Shropshire College and Jackie Doodson, principal of North Shropshire College.

Marches School Sixth Form students built on the success of last years’ first ever A Level results, celebrating a pass rate of 100%, with 41% of entries at A*- B. Executive headteacher Mrs Sarah Longville said: “I offer my warmest congratulations to our Sixth Formers as they celebrate their fantastic A level results. This is our second cohort to complete their Sixth Form education at the school and we are thoroughly delighted with their set of results.” Mrs Longville continued: “These results reflect the high aspirations of both students and staff at The Marches School and are testimony to why we pushed so hard for a Sixth Form at the school.” Outstanding individual results were achieved by Alex Keir, from Year 13 who achieved A*, A* A, B and Jonathan Jones, from Year 12, who gained four A grades in the sciences and maths.

The power to change lives Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital bariatric consultants John Loy, Manel Riera and James Rink are changing the lives of patients with the latest in weight loss surgery and aftercare

eighing 32 stones, staff nurse and former sportsman Peter Warren struggled with sleep apnoea, lack of confidence and depression after he piled on the pounds following a knee injury in his early 20s. The 35-year-old nurse, from near Shrewsbury, had a 66-inch waistline and was wearing 8XL clothes when he was referred to consultant bariatric surgeon Mr John Loy for a gastric bypass. After just nine months, it is no exaggeration to say that his body and his life were totally transformed. Now a healthy 12 stone, Peter’s confidence has returned, he has started playing cricket and has climbed Snowdon, a challenge which was previously unimaginable. For consultant Mr Loy, this is just one of many success stories for patients who are living proof that bariatric surgery has the power to change lives. He has seen patients return to work, come off medication for diabetes, overcome depression and return to a normal, healthy life. No wonder he loves his job working in the NHS and at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital. “It is such a rewarding branch of medicine with life-changing results,” he says. “Peter is one of many patients who has been able to get back to living life to the full after surgery. He has gone from being hardly able to breath to losing 20 stones. He plays cricket, has climbed the highest mountain in Wales and no longer suffers depression,” says Mr Loy. John Loy is one of three consultants who specialise in bariatric surgery at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, and between them they offer a wealth of experience in a branch of surgery that is seeing a huge rise in demand. Experts Mr Riera, Mr Rink and Mr Loy will be offering advice at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital’s event ‘Let’s Talk About Weight Loss Surgery’ this month. On 13 October, the county’s leading bariatric consultants will be joined by dietitians and specialist nurses at an open event at the hospital on Longden Road, Shrewsbury. They hope to dispel some myths and offer straightforward advice about the benefits of bariatric surgery. There are several types of weight-loss surgery options available, including gastric band, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. All work by restricting the

surgeon John Loy and above, in surgery

stomach’s capacity for food. The work is usually carried out as keyhole surgery and patients can be out of hospital in less than a day. Irish-born consultant Mr Loy has been living and working in Shropshire since 2014 and is proud of the work that he and his department have achieved. “Weight loss surgery has such a profound effect on people’s health. Obesity contributes to so many medical conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis, reflux, kidney problems and cancer. “It frustrates me when you hear reports that it is an easy option or that it’s for people who are too lazy to lose weight. Some patients have lost a lot of weight in the past but put it back on. There is much ongoing research that shows that fat cells have memory and that diets are simply a temporary fix; once people go back to eating as they once did, the weight will go back on. Change has to be forever. “We’re not talking about surgery to simply make people thinner. We want to make our patients healthier and have a better quality of life. Surgery is suitable for people with a BMI of 35 or above. It is about curbing diabetes, controlling joint pain, and allowing them to work and live a healthier life. “Each patient is different and should be treated as such to find the ideal procedure for them. For us it is really important to understand the psychology behind their weight problems, offer a sympathetic ear, high quality surgery and follow-up care. We want the very best for our patients to help them get on with their lives.” Let’s Talk About Weight Loss Surgery is a free and open event at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, Longden Road, Shrewsbury. To book, telephone 0333 305 3665.

THINK PINK

T

he Little Greene Paint Company has once again joined forces with national breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Haven, to promote and support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the whole of October, Little Greene has pledged that 15p from every tin of paint sold via the company’s 270 UK-wide stockists, including Alan Ward in Shrewsbury, or through its website www.littlegreene.com, will be donated directly to Breast Cancer Haven. The pledge applies to all the colours in Little Greene’s range, but of course Breast Cancer Awareness month is associated with pink. Most commonly used to decorate a little

girl’s bedroom, it might not be a colour that springs to mind for other rooms in the house. Yet with so many shades to choose from, you can create a grown-up scheme, too. A shocking pink feature wall in a hall will tell visitors that you have an individual home. Use a lighter, fresher hue to lighten up an otherwise lackluster space. Faded pinks work well with reds and florals in a bright sitting room filled with antique furniture. Even one pink accessory, such as a cushion, lampshade, artwork or rug, breaks up a monotone room. Certain shades can even be used as a neutral, teamed with purples, greys, taupes and blacks. So banish images of Barbie and think pink. THIS PAGE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: n Paisley jacquard duvet set from £35-£65 at M&Co. There’s nothing too feminine about this bedding set n A hint of pink is this embroidered Baroque cushion from Laura Ashley, £50 n Snuggle up on the sofa under an Oriental Journey beehive weave throw in dusky pink, £40 from the National Trust. Woven in North Wales from pure new wool n Be bold with Scion wallpaper. Diva is a flamboyant stylised floral that’s oversized. Available from Just Jayne in Bridgnorth

RENOVATION

Historic home restored to former glory

C

ombermere Abbey in Shropshire has been crowned the winner of the 2016 Restoration Award, presented by the Historic Houses Association (HHA) and sponsored by Sotheby’s. The house, owned by the Callander Beckett family since 1919, had suffered severe deterioration over a number of years. The award has been given for the most recent full restoration of the north wing, but also in recognition of the 24-year project to bring the whole house back to life. Combermere Abbey sits at the heart of 1,000 acres of farmland, woodland and park near Whitchurch, with a 150-acre lake curving around the house. Its origins date to the 1130s but in 1957 when Penelope Callander, later Lady Lindsay, inherited the house it was in such poor condition that permission was sought to demolish much of the building. Thankfully this plan was rejected and the process of trying to save Combermere began. Sarah Callander Beckett took over the estate in 1992 and reassessed the restoration, seeking to improve the site and its uses. Firstly, the stable block was converted to create nine holiday cottages. Later the library, formerly the Abbot’s Hall, was brought back to its former magnificence. The final stage of the restoration has taken place in the north wing. This wing will provide luxurious boutique bedrooms with sitting and dining rooms, as well as bridal accommodation. Ancillary buildings have also been restored, including a Grade II* game larder which is thought to date from the 19th century with a grant from the Country Houses Foundation. Sarah Callander Beckett said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won this very prestigious award and to have been recognised by our peers in this way. The restoration of this wonderful place has been my mission since inheriting it in 1992 and has taken my family and me on an extraordinary journey over the past 24 years. “To finally see the Abbey without scaffolding, standing proud in the landscape as it was designed to be, makes it all very worthwhile and I hope will give encouragement to others in a similar situation fighting to save these remarkable treasures.”

n The Elm Tree Park development offers the best of both worlds with scenic country views and nearby town facilities

A spectacular view over stunning countryside is among the many reasons to snap up one of the last remaining properties at Galliers Homes’ Elm Tree Park development, near Oswestry. The company now only has a few carefully-designed four bedroom houses left for sale at this successful site, in Llanymynech. Located in Ashfield Terrace, on the edge of the village, the development has wide-reaching rural views. However, it is also well placed for travel to the shops, supermarkets, cinemas and restaurants in nearby Oswestry. The final plots are now available with prices starting at £350,000 for the former show home and other designs priced from £380,000, with part exchange considered and coming complete with floor coverings. Each detached home features an en-suite master bedroom, garage and stylish kitchen and superb finishes throughout. To find out more about living in this development contact Bowen Son and Watson estate agents on 01691 652367.

Housing project to benefit Castlefields

Castlefields in Oswestry is set to benefit from a major investment, as a local housing provider steps up their efforts to improve the area. Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing (STAR) ran a consultation with tenants of the Castlefields estate to understand what they felt was needed. Lauren Woods, involvement and empowerment officer for STAR Housing, said: The Castlefields area has long needed to be improved, so this investment and regeneration is a wonderful opportunity. Our tenants are central to the decisions we take, so we always look to involve them in community improvement. I’d like to thank everyone who shared their ideas for the work with us.” Following the consultation feedback, the improvement works will see new parking bays, green space and landscaped areas; as well as a new play area. Vince Hunt, Shropshire councillor for Oswestry West, said: “This news is highly positive for the area and something Castlefields has long needed. “A lot of work has gone into making these improvements happen from myself, STAR Housing and our partners and I’m delighted that the tenants are to reap the benefits.”

Bespoke art to shine light on new homes A shining example of green living, new homes in Shropshire will include a special light installation designed by artists to reflect the eco-friendly credentials of the properties. Tesni Homes has commissioned designers Freshwest, based in West Wales, to design a bespoke light installation for select homes in the county. The company emphasis is on preserving and enhancing the environment, using natural materials to ensure responsible building and the production of eco-friendly homes. Tesni’s Lorraine Hopkins explained: “The Tesni brand is very much about light and natural light in particular. Tesni is an old Celtic word which means ‘warmed in the sun’ and reflecting this we install solar panels and sun pipes for example to harness energy from the sun. We’re very excited to be commissioning a Tesni light.” Freshwest has been briefed to create something that reflects green living, using data based on energy generated by Tesni’s headquarters to explore different visual shapes

n Natural light, provided by sun pipes, is an

important part of living in one of Tesni Homes

that help create and inspire the design of the light. They are also exploring recycled materials. “Freshwest have a passion for environmental issues and sustainability and as Tesni’s background is in renewables, it’s a natural partnership,” Lorraine added. The collaboration will be shared at Higher Education colleges across the UK as well as a tailored workshop for pupils at the Marches School in Oswestry. Freshwest will talk to students about the creative process and what it is like to work to a business brief. For information on Tesni properties visit www.tesnihomes.co.uk

On the move for Christmas Want to move house before Christmas? This month our ‘Secret Agent’ Kate Howell of Woodhead Oswestry Sales and Lettings gives us some top tips to sell your house: With many prospective buyers taking a summer break from house-hunting, autumn represents a time of fresh hope for house-sellers everywhere. No sooner has the school bell sounded to mark the start of a new year, prospective buyers are on the phone arranging viewings and making offers. The incentive being a new home in time for Christmas. With an average house sale taking anything from eight to 10 weeks to complete, October is the month for buyers to secure their new home in time for the festive season.

Here are five tips to help make the process as smooth as possible: Prepare for the costs of selling your house Factor in fees for agents and solicitors, which may double if you are buying another home. Also bear in mind you may not get the asking price you are expecting, particularly if you are looking for a quick sale

Prepare your home for the buyers Redecorate, repair and declutter. The smell of fresh paint and new carpet will provide a welcoming interior for viewers. Outside, lawns should be mowed, pathways weeded and any repairs required should be completed before the house goes on the market Use a professional photographer to make sure your house stands out from the crowd Get an Energy Performance Certificate – you must order one before you market your property Gather relevant paperwork, such as gas safety certificate and guarantees for building work, new windows and doors Set a price Compare your property with similar ones for sale in your area. Get a valuation from your local estate agent Agree price and fees with the agent Have a price that you’d accept clear in your mind, so that when you do receive an offer you can respond quickly to secure the deal

n Kate Woodhead offers top tips to ensure a new home for Christmas

Contact a solicitor Select the solicitor you want to use for the sale and contact them in advance to let them know once your house has gone on the market Keep it moving Once a sale is agreed your estate agent will contact your solicitor for you with the details of the sale Reply to your solicitor’s queries quickly Agree on a date of exchange of contracts and completion date with your solicitor and your purchaser through the agent. Hopefully you should be in your new home with plenty of time to find a space for your Christmas tree!

EDUCATION

SCHOOL REPORT It’s been a busy time for schools and colleges, with exam results and a new year starting. We catch up with all the education news from our county

n Straight A student Eli Richardson gets a congratulatory hug from deputy head Marie Jones; SHS pupils had plenty to smile about

Shrewsbury High School

T

he girls and staff at Shrewsbury High celebrated for two weeks running after receiving outstanding sets of examination results. The school, renowned for its examination performance, was overjoyed with both the GCSE and A level results, with headmaster Michael Getty commenting: “We are absolutely thrilled for the girls and their exceptional results. “With newspaper headlines suggesting GCSEs are now far more challenging, we are delighted to see our girls accessing top grades so routinely. Once again we are in the position where a significant proportion of the entire year group received a flawless spread of A*/A grades,

which is testimony to their hard work. “The number of girls securing straight A grades at A level is also incredible.” The high school was particularly proud of the girls’ ability to secure the high A level grades required to gain places at the most selective institutions with large numbers of girls heading to the likes of Cambridge, Durham and Bath universities. Whilst GCSE results were excellent across the board, it was stand-out results in Arts subjects and Languages that were a particular highlight. Mr Getty said: “The high school has always been renowned for the quality of its results in the Sciences so this year it is particularly gratifying to see how highly the girls have also performed in Arts and Language-based subjects. With 100%

A*/A in the likes of German, almost 90% A*/A in Latin and over 80% A*/A in Music and Drama it is wonderful to see the girls excelling across the full span of academic disciplines. “Languages in particular are so frequently neglected which makes this kind of performance all the more pleasing.” With top grades at A level being supposedly harder to achieve, the school was delighted as a string of girls gained straight A grades, and over 85% of grades achieved the top A*to C gradings. “I am particularly delighted with the diversity of career paths that the girls are now going off to pursue, which range from engineering to accountancy, from psychology to English Literature!” said Michael Getty.

Bridgnorth Endowed School At Bridgnorth Endowed School 70% of students achieved at least five GCSEs including English and Maths at grade C or better; this measure was used by the Government until last year and is familiar to parents. It demonstrates the improvements at the Endowed since last year, when both the town’s secondary schools produced results in the low 50%s. GCSE performance provides crucial information for parents approaching the choice of secondary school for their child, as it shows how the school has enabled students to make progress and achieve their best. The much-improved Ofsted report from four months ago is further proof of this. No other school locally can show such rapid improvement. When you look deeper into the Endowed’s results they look even

better. The Government is focusing now on the progress of all students. Taking English as an example, the national norm is about 70% of students making ‘expected progress’, however at BES nearly 90% of students did so, with 42% making ‘more than expected progress’. And yet the Endowed isn’t an exams factory. Students are developed to be well-rounded citizens of the future and are given a whole host of opportunities including volunteering in a partner school in Tanzania, representing the school in a range of sports that rivals the best around, accessing fairly priced music lessons, taking part in school shows, visits to Rome and the battlefields of France and Belgium. The school is confident it can provide answers to prospective parents’ questions that will make BES the top choice in town.

New College Telford New College Telford is celebrating another impressive set of A level results, with an overall 97% pass rate. There was a 100% pass rate in many subjects including Maths, Chemistry, Art, English, Film Studies, Media and History. Curriculum vice principal Jean Wright said: “We are very pleased with the results, which overall are an improvement on last year. It is fantastic to see so many of our students going on to their first choice universities.” William Beddow from Apley in Telford has secured a place at Cambridge to study Maths, after A*s in Maths and Further Maths, and an A in Physics. “I’m very pleased, but also relieved,” said William, who opted to come to New College Telford two years ago, instead of staying on at his school sixth form. “New College Telford has been excellent for me – I’ve really loved it. The teachers have been great, and if you are prepared to put the work in, you can do really well here.” Friends Thomas Billington, Vicki Cox and Amber Mansell – former Charlton School students – all received the grades they needed to go on to Southampton University. Thomas, from Hadley, got three As and one B to study Philosophy, Vicki, from Wellington, got two A*, one A and one B and will study Maths, and Amber, also from Wellington, will be doing Film Studies after she got two As and one B. Cerys Nash, who admitted having to overcome depression during her studies, was delighted with her two As in Maths and Further Maths, and a B in Fine Art. “It has been hard at times, but all the hard work has been worth it,” she said. Her friend Rebecca Powell, from Shawbirch, secured her place at Leeds University with one A and two Bs, in English Language, French and Psychology. She said: “New College teachers have been our life-savers. They are so understanding and supportive.” Another happy student was Megan McGuin from St Georges, who gained four straight A grades in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English Literature. She now has a choice of universities, and is hoping to become a pharmacist. “I’ve really enjoyed it here. It’s a lot more adult environment than secondary school. We are given more responsibility, backed up with lots of support.”

EDUCATION

Telford College of Arts and Technology Mature student Clair Drummond has said a big thank you to Telford College of Arts and Technology for helping her to graduate with a first class honours degree in Health and Social Care. The 33-year-old, from Malinslee, completed a two-year Foundation Degree at TCAT, before topping it up with a further year at the University of Wolverhampton. And she said she was grateful to TCAT for giving her a ‘great step on to the higher education ladder’, and supporting her with her dyslexia. Clair, a former student at Much Wenlock’s William Brookes School, is now working towards a master’s degree, and can register as an approved social worker. This means she can expect to earn up to £25,000 in her first year, rising to around £40,000 if she becomes a social work manager. It marks the start of an exciting new chapter for mother-of-three Clair, whose previous jobs range from co-ordinating training at fast food chain McDonald’s, to giving scuba diving tuition in Malta. It was when she started looking for jobs in

the care sector that she realised she needed to develop her CV and get a professional universitylevel qualification. She contacted TCAT after being recommended by a friend, and the college helped her to juggle her studies with the pressures of bringing up her young children – one of which was just eight weeks old when she enrolled. Student finance allowed her to save a deposit for a house, and covered around 85% of her childcare and nursery costs. Clair said: “It can be daunting, as you are studying in smaller environment. But these group sizes allow you to learn in a fantastic way – lessons are taught in a classroom, not a theatre!” Her TCAT tutor Stuart Taylor said: “She came to the Foundation Degree Health and Social Care with a level three NVQ. “Under normal circumstances, I would have advised her to study on the Access to Higher Education Diploma, which would have given her the necessary academic skills to study on the course. “However, during interview, Clair convinced me that she was a suitable candidate to start on

n Clair Drummond at TCAT the course, and from the beginning she displayed an ability to learn very quickly. “It is excellent to see that this progression continued when she studied on the third year of an Honours Degree at the University of Wolverhampton, and obtained a first class degree.” Clair’s story shows that you don’t need A levels to go to university – and you don’t need to spend all your time at university to get a degree!

Prestfelde School, Shrewsbury

William Brookes School, Much Wenlock Students and staff at William Brookes in Much Wenlock are celebrating the school’s best GCSE results. 82% of students secured five or more A*-C grades with 73% including English and Maths. 23% of all entries were graded at A*-A with 52% at A*-B. 96% of students gained 5+A*-G including English and Maths. Geoff Renwick, head of William Brookes School, was full of praise for students and teachers alike: “Our students and our excellent teaching team thoroughly deserve this excellent set of GCSE grades for their hard work and commitment. As the only Coubertin school in Great Britain, it is lovely that we have performed at the same high level as Team GB this summer!” Chair of Governors Catherine Connery added: “We are extremely proud of our GCSE students’ well-deserved success and of our dedicated teachers. These superb results demonstrate a strong improvement in academic performance and place us firmly amongst the top of the county’s comprehensive schools.” Fifteen Year 11 students gained nine or more A/A* with Connor Bennett and Charlotte Casteleyn sweeping the board with 11 GCSEs at A*; Oliver Shires got 7A*, 3A and a B; Tom Nock and Evyn Woodhouse gained 5A*, 5A and a B; Hannah Broadley and Jade Bruce obtained 5A* and 4A grades in their results.

A Shropshire school is “revolutionising” its boarding house by making it more flexible for pupils and parents.
Prestfelde School in Shrewsbury has welcomed boarders since 1929, but changing times have seen the numbers of pupils living on site dwindle in recent years.
Now the school is developing a fresh approach by making the boarding house an “extension of home” to encourage more children to benefit from the boarding experience.
Mike Haswell, head of boarding at Prestfelde, said: “Times are continually changing and we at Prestfelde are always reviewing the services we offer. With this in mind we have decided to make our boarding house more flexible for parents and pupils.
“Boarding has changed somewhat from the days of parents dropping off their children with their luggage on the first day of term and picking them up three months later.
“The whole attitude towards boarding, from parents, pupils and teachers alike, is very different nowadays – you could call it a revolution – and we have embraced the modern, flexible style of boarding without losing the key benefits that staying in such an inspiring place as Prestfelde can provide.

n Mike and Jo Haswell with their sons Kieran and Connor

Moreton Hall School, Weston Rhyn Moreton Hall in Shropshire has been named by The Times as the UK’s top performing non-selective school following outstanding A level and GCSE results. This impressive accolade follows hot on the heels of The Tatler Schools Guide, which pronounced ‘If you’re looking for girl power, you’ll find it at Moreton Hall’. Exceptional pastoral care, detailed knowledge of individual students and unlimited extra support and help are undoubtedly key factors in explaining the school’s remarkable success in public examinations. However, principal Jonathan Forster was quick to pay tribute to the quality of teaching and learning which has long been the hallmark of the school. “We have exceptional teachers and outstanding students, both of whom are prepared to go the extra mile,” he said. “Moreton is a very special place and its unique atmosphere and ethos allows us to stretch the most able and support the least confident. “Our aim is quite simple, to enable students to reach their potential. Whether that is achieving a place at Oxbridge, representing their country at lacrosse or utilising the skills honed in Moreton Enterprises to run their own company. “Our academic results are stellar, but that is only one aspect of the business of education. A Moreton education is for life!”

“These days families want to spend much more time with each other at weekends and in the evenings.
“Our parents still want the excellent teaching, wideranging opportunities and nurturing environment that the school provides, but they also want the flexibility to spend quality time with their children when they want to.”
Prestfelde is now offering a range of flexible boarding options. Weekly boarders can stay from Monday to Friday, regular boarders can opt to stay the same night or nights each week, and occasional boarders can drop in and out depending on their parents’ commitments or their own activities.
The environment is carefully managed by Mr Haswell, who lives in Prestfelde House with his wife Jo and their two boys, Kieran and Connor, creating a real family atmosphere.

GAME ON

S

imply put, game is wild animals and birds that are hunted and eaten, although nowadays many are farmed and raised domestically. Many of us are uncertain about how to cook game or are unsure about the flavours, but autumn and winter are the ideal time to indulge in this fresh, quality and low fat meat. For most game, the shooting season runs from the beginning of October until the end of January, and if you buy from a supplier who knows their game and can advise you on the best way of cooking correctly then there’s no reason at all why it shouldn’t be moist and flavoursome as well as seasonal. For more information visit theTaste of Game website for recipe ideas, news and where to buy. www.tasteofgame.org.uk

Roast grouse with red wine, port and blackberry sauce and bread sauce fritters Ingredients 2 grouse 4 rashers smoked streaky bacon 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 50g salted butter 2 garlic cloves 2 sprigs thyme Bread sauce fritters 2 tbsp mashed potato (leftovers work well) 250ml milk 2 cloves ¼ star anise 1 /2 clove garlic ¼ tsp cinnamon 1 /2 clove garlic 4 thick slices white bread cubed (fresh) Salt and pepper 2 tbsp leftover vegetables (can be anything) Red wine sauce 150ml red wine 75ml glass of port 200ml chicken stock Knob of butter 12 blackberries (optional)

Method Wrap breasts with smoked bacon, place in a medium hot, heavy-bottomed frying pan with vegetable oil and a knob of butter. Leaving the skin on crush (do not chop) a couple of garlic cloves and place them in the pan together with the thyme. Over a medium heat, brown the grouse on one side, then the other, then the breast. Finally cook it with the back down. The entire process should take about 10 minutes – remember to brown the legs. Set aside in a warm place to allow the grouse to rest for five minutes or so. It should then be ready to serve. If not, and still a bit pink, finish in an oven at 180°C for four to five minutes.

To make the fritters: Add to the milk the two cloves, a quarter of star anise, ¼ tsp cinnamon and half a clove of garlic. Warm the milk through, and then sieve to remove the cloves, garlic etc. Add bread cubes. Season with salt and pepper and cook on low heat for five minutes, stirring regularly. Set aside. Combine the bread sauce with two tablespoons each of mashed potato and leftover vegetables. Season. Heat a knob of butter or a splash of vegetable oil in a small non-stick pan, and spoon in a serving of the fritter mixture. Brown on one side and turn to brown on the other. Set each aside and keep warm.

52

OCTOBER 2016

RECIPES

To make the sauce: Heat port and red wine in a saucepan, reduce by half, then add the stock. Reduce again so the sauce is just thick enough to ‘coat’ the meat. Add a knob of butter for a lovely sheen. Serve the grouse whole with red wine sauce with the fritters alongside. Add blackberries to the sauce and warm through before serving. Serve with green vegetables.

Pheasant pasties Ingredients 500g of short crust pastry (for ease buy readymade or you can make your own. One ready rolled pack will make about 3 pasties). 1 pheasant 2 waxy potatoes, peeled and grated on the large side of a cheese grater 1 /2 small swede, peeled and grated on the large side of a cheese grater 6 juniper berries, crushed 8 sprigs of thyme, leaves picked and finely chopped Salt and pepper, and a little flour 70g butter 1 egg, beaten (for an egg wash)

Method Preheat oven to 375F/190c or gas mark 5. Roast the pheasant for about 20 minutes. This will make it much easier to cut/pull the meat off it. Once the bird has cooled enough to touch, peel of all the skin and discard. Using a sharp knife, or a fork, pull the meat off both breasts and legs. Carefully cut as much meat as possible off the legs, taking care not to include any small bones. Cut the meat into a rough dice. Toss the meat with the juniper berries and thyme. Season with a little salt and pepper. Roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thick. Take a 6 inch dish, and place on the dough. Cut around the dish to form a pastry disc. Do this as many times as the pastry allows. Put a layer or two of potato and turnip down – leaving a ½ inch border around the edge (room for crimping). Top with some of the pheasant meat. Add a couple of small cubes of butter (or if you are feeling very extravagant a knob of clotted cream) and sprinkle the top of the meat with a little flour. Brush the pastry edges with a little water. Bring both edges up to the top of the pasty and press the edges together tightly. Now for the crimping: Start at one end of the edge. For a classic crimp, use one finger to push one side of the pastry, pinch around that finger with the finger and thumb of your other hand to create a scalloped effect. Brush the outsides with a little of the beaten egg. On both sides of the pasty cut a short (1 inch) hole to let steam out.

Repeat until all the meat is used up. Put the pasties on a baking sheet lined with the greaseproof paper which comes with the pastry if you buy ready rolled. Crank the oven up to 425F/ 220c or gas mark 7 and bake for 20 minutes. Turn the oven down to 320F/160c or gas mark 3 and bake for a further 40 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before eating; the insides will be really hot.

Pot roast partridge with honey roast root vegetables Serves 4

Ingredients 4 whole dressed partridges 2 knobs of butter 2 tbsp olive oil Salt and ground pepper 4 sprigs of thyme 4 cloves of garlic, crushed Honey roast root vegetables: 2 large carrots 2 large parsnips 1 medium swede 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 large sprig of thyme 3 tbsp of honey 4 tbsp cider vinegar 5fl oz/150ml chicken or game stock

OCTOBER 2016

RECIPES

Method Place garlic and thyme in cavity of partridge. Heat large ovenproof frying pan with olive oil and butter. When it starts to foam add the partridges. Seal birds for 2 minutes on each side until golden brown and remove from the pan. Wash and peel vegetables before cutting into 1in/2cm square chunks. Place vegetables in pan, cover with cold water, add a little salt. Bring to boil and cook until al dente and strain. Roast off the vegetables in the frying pan, add thyme and garlic. Deglaze pan with cider vinegar, add honey and season with salt and pepper. Place the birds on top of the root vegetables and season. Roast in a preheated oven at 200C/4000F/gas mark 6 for about 7-10 minutes. Remove from the oven, cover with foil and allow to rest for a further 5-7 minutes. Strain off the pot roast juice, place in a small pan and reduce by half. Finish the light partridge gravy by whisking in 4 tablespoons of olive oil. Season and taste. Serve with game chips or potato crisps.

Venison burger with root vegetable crisps and blue cheese Serves 4

Ingredients 600g coarsely minced venison 1 red onion, finely chopped 1 tsp chopped thyme Sea salt Ground black pepper 1 parsnip 2 carrots 1 celeriac 4 slices blue cheese 4 buns Seasonal salad Mustard

Method To make the burgers, mix the mince, onion and thyme together, adding salt and pepper to season. If you wish, fry a small piece of the mix and taste it to make sure that the seasoning is just right for you. Divide the burger mix into four patties and place in the fridge for a couple of hours to firm up. Finely slice the root vegetables and fry in vegetable oil until crisp. Drain, season with salt and set aside so that they remain crispy. Heat a frying pan with a little oil and fry the burgers for 4 to 5 minutes on each side – longer if you like them well done. Place the burgers on a baking tray, add a thick slice of blue cheese and brown under the grill. Serve the cheeseburgers in a toasted bun with the root vegetable crisps, salad and mustard.

As well as dropping a dress size or two, Louise is now a ‘mumpreneur’ and creator of Shrewsburybased business Purition. The Shropshire mum’s passion to find a natural way to get into shape is now helping thousands of other women (and men) across the UK to achieve their health and fitness goals through her booming micro food production business. Louise first developed the Purition wholefood smoothie mixes three years ago after a friend introduced her to a similar product made in Australia. Made from a combination of nuts, seeds and coconut, the natural shakes were an instant winner for Louise, who had been struggling to find a natural, sustainable and healthy diet to use alongside her new fitness programme. “I’d always made quite a conscious effort to eat the right foods, making flavours as well as a range of vegan products. foods, sugar and starch and sure I get my five-a-day for Over the last four to five months the company increasing nutrient-dense I was so excited about example,” says Louise. “But has expanded its team and Louise’s husband greens and eating protein, as after having the children – Edward has also got on board. well as good sources of fat this discovery that I William, Charlotte and Fred – “It’s been a whirlwind few years,” said Louise. at every meal. As pharmacists, you’d imagine most of the work we do surrounds people’s physical health as we help treat coughs, colds and all sorts of other common ailments. But we can also come in handy when it comes to their mental health too and that’s why I’m focusing on World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, in this month’s column. I’m John Gentle, superintendent pharmacist at Day Lewis in Oswald Road in Oswestry (formerly The Pharmacy @ Caxton), and I believe we should all be talking about mental health more often. Around one in four people are expected to struggle in any given year, making it one of the most prevalent types of condition around, and even more of us will experience stress, insomnia or one of any number of wellbeing-related issues at some time in our lives.

There’s hardly anyone who isn’t going to be in a bad place emotionally at one point during their lifetime. In fact, there’s hardly anyone who isn’t going to be in a bad place emotionally at one point during their lifetime. But the sad fact is many of those people will never seek help: whether it’s because they don’t think it’s serious enough, they’re worried about being judged, they’re concerned their employers will treat them differently or they simply don’t recognise they’ve got a problem. Here at Day Lewis we’re encouraging more people to come and talk to us about their wellbeing – you wouldn’t think twice about approaching us CAXTON SURGERY • OSWALD ROAD • OSWESTRY • SY11 1RD to talk about a physical ailment so please do the same when it comes to Tel: (01691) 654646 • (01691) 670994 your mental health. Of course, the first port of call if you think you may need to be referred for talking therapy or to receive antidepressants is going to be your GP. But if you’ve got an issue such as struggling to sleep because of your wellbeing then we can advise on the best way forward and we can also give you plenty of information about some lifestyle changes you may be able to implement which could help. We’re also well placed to signpost you towards the most appropriate place to receive some support. ormer patient and sporting hero Ryan Cockbill, made time to visit an Oswestry hospital before jetting off to Brazil last month to compete in the 2016 Paralympics. Staff at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH), near Oswestry, were delighted to wish Ryan luck ahead of the Paralympics and promised to watch with keen interest to see him and other patients past and present among the GB ranks, bidding to bring medals home. Para-shooter Ryan, 26, was paralysed from the chest down after an accident in a shallow pool while celebrating the end of his GCSEs with friends. Ryan competed in the R4 and R5 100m air rifle competition in Rio – having also been in the London Paralympics four years ago, finishing 21st and 17th respectively in the two events. Ryan is a long-standing patient within the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries, and was there just days before jetting off to Brazil. “I came in as an inpatient not long after the accident and I’ve been popping in and out for various treatment ever since,” he said, during his visit. “The staff are brilliant, some of them have been here for 10 years or more and I know quite a lot of them very well.

“I started para-shooting at the Spinal Games soon after my injury” he added. “From there it was a hobby a couple of nights a week. In 2010 I got invited on to the GB squad after a couple of trials and, since then, it’s been a full time job for me as an athlete. “I’ve been able to travel around the world seeing different things. It’s been really good for me.” Rebecca Warren, ward manager in the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries, said: “We are inspired every day by the amazing things our patients achieve. They make us so proud – and give so much inspiration and encouragement to others who have suffered similar injuries.”

Building a big future

n Oswestry mayor Cllr Paul Milner presents

stallholder Heather Anderson with a certificate to mark 40 years in business

Time to celebrate for stallholder Heather Market stall holder Heather Anderson has celebrated four decades at Oswestry Market. Oswestry mayor Paul Milner dropped in to congratulate Heather, who has been trading antiques within Oswestry Indoor Market, in Bailey Head, for an incredible 40 years. Markets manager David Clough said: “Heather has been a credit to our wonderful market over the years selling all sorts of weird and wonderful items in her antique and collectable shop called Once Upon A Tyme.”

Friendly local service and low online pricing are a winning combination for Oswestry business, DTS. The discounted trade supply company is proving that a local company can compete with the multinationals. Family-run DTS, which sells everything from screws and fixings to sealants, building consumables and safety equipment, moved to new premises in April this year. With continuing growth in their business across the UK, as well as huge support from local customers, they are already finding that they are out-growing their new premises and require more staff. Cousins Chris and Wayne ‘Sonny’ Woods, who both live in Oswestry, are looking to recruit two new people to the DTS team by the end of the year as part of their expansion. The company’s business model is to provide big-name quality brands at low online prices, but also to give that little bit extra with their knowledgable and friendly customer service. With more than 40 years’ shop and sales experience between them, the pair offer a more personable and flexible service than their nationwide competitors. DTS already supply many large UK companies including British Gas and Scottish Power, as well as numerous national house builders, but they also work with all sizes of businesses from the

region with the same great service and prices. “Customers often pop in for a chat and a coffee when passing, and we have built friendships with many of them,” says Chris. “We even drop orders off to customers’ houses at evenings or weekends if they are really stuck. Traders in the area can pick up everything they need from us on the day, but still pay low online prices. We also offer free next day delivery anywhere in the UK.” Some of the brands on offer include Reisser, Spax, Catnic, Talon, Unifix, Sika EverBuild, BondIt, Soudal, Marcrist & Fischer. The trade counter is open for order collections from around 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Visit www.discount-trade-supplies.com or telephone 0330 999 8665.

Stuck in the middle: financial strife begins at 40 Amanda Lloyd, Shropshire Review’s new financial expert, tackles the monetary problems of being a ‘40-something’ ‘Life Begins at 40’. A friend of mine said these words to me as we were approaching our 40th birthdays, which I personally was dreading. Our 40s were meant to represent the ‘relaxed years’, at which point many couples have an increased income and children are likely to be reaching financial independence. Modern day living has altered this. Some commonplace occurrences such as marriage, divorce or the addition of another mouth to feed are good examples of many potential factors in the disruption of a person’s finances. Huge life changes can have effects on our income and pension and may result in great upheaval with aspects to consider such as changing home or a potentially costly mortgage. With many couples opting to have children later on in life (maybe after a second marriage), this also can have an effect on financial stability. I work as part of the Beaumont Financial team based in Oswestry. The key to my role is the ability to offer independent financial advice

with the clients’ best interests in mind and to obtain a greater understanding of their needs for the future. We advise our clients based on products from the financial market as a whole as we’re not restricted to a specific company’s products. This allows us to provide unique advice for the individual without bias. As different life stages occur, different questions are raised. Sadly, I am witnessing many of my friends trying to help an older generation who are now caught in a financial trap as a result of leaving important financial matters until they are unfortunately too late to change. The stress of coping with this burden can be unsettling at an already difficult time and is avoidable with the correct input and guidance. Beaumont Financial Planners are a local company in the heart of Shropshire, with more than 20 years’ experience in financial services, providing a truly independent and holistic service. Our friendly and welcoming team can help you with investment advice, pensions, retirement planning, estate planning, personal

and business protection and ongoing reviews. By seeking independent advice you can provide peace of mind for yourself and your family. Watch out for my regular column on all things financial in future issues. If you would like to discuss your financial needs, call us to arrange a free, no obligation assessment on 01691 670524, or email me, Amanda Lloyd at Amanda@beaumont-financial.co.uk Alternatively, visit our website www.beaumontfinancial.co.uk or pop in to 21 Salop Road, Oswestry, SY11 2NR

My wife upset one of the staff so much she walked out. Can she sue? Q: I run a café restaurant with my business partner. We have worked together in the business for twelve years and have built up a good, regular clientele and an excellent reputation. Now my wife has taken to coming in and “helping out” on odd days. She doesn’t have a clue about managing the staff but she makes it very clear to them that because she is a director of the business she is ‘in charge’ when my partner and I are busy in the kitchen. Last week she crept up behind one of our established young waitresses and shouted in her ear, accusing her of looking at her ‘funny’. The waitress was very upset and left. Can I be sued and what can I do?

A: This is a potentially serious situation. To creep up and shout what is tantamount to a threat to the employee is potentially a criminal assault and is certainly an abuse of your wife’s position as employer. From an employment law perspective, to act in such an abusive way is a breach of the implied covenant of mutual trust and confidence between employer and employee. Depending on the nature of the incident, this could be sufficient for a constructive dismissal claim to be entered against your partnership. At the very least, your employee is entitled to be paid for a notice period as you could also have been deemed to have terminated her contract by acting in such a way. Apart from keeping your wife out of the business, you probably do need to arrange a meeting with the employee and agree terms of settlement so the matter does not go any further. You should however take urgent legal advice before doing this. This question has been answered by Gwyn Edwards, a Chartered Legal Executive with GHP Legal. For an appointment visit www. ghplegal.com or contact one of our offices: Oswestry 01691 659194, Chirk 01691 777949, Wrexham 01978 291456, Llangollen 01978 860313. Speciality cuppa makes the grade A new coffee shop, which offers speciality coffees and teas from some of the world’s best suppliers, has opened in Oswestry. Liar Liar, which opened in Albion Hill in September, is the first coffee shop in Oswestry serving speciality graded coffee and tea, says owner Tom Jones. “I have spent the last four years gaining the required knowledge to do these beautiful drinks justice,” he says. “We offer something different to Oswestry’s other cafes. I would say the main difference is that we are very drink focused, although being able to serve some other awesome products is a bonus,” he adds. “We are starting with a very small team to ensure I can spend as much time as possible with them, and produce high quality beverages. “We try to do our part in encouraging a sustainable and ethical world, so all of our packaging is 100% compostable, using organic produce where possible and almost all our suppliers are independent businesses.” Tom, aged 26, grew up in Weston Rhyn and first tried speciality coffee four years ago and says it has been his mission to bring it to Oswestry ever since. “I have visited more than 100 coffee shops all over the country for inspiration. I have been lucky enough to work at two of the big pioneers of specialty coffee in London and Bristol. “I hope that Liar Liar is approachable for everyone and that everyone will feel

comfortable working their way through our extensive menu,” he added. As a new local business, Tom is keen to bring some fresh ideas to the local business community. “As independent businesses I think we are stronger together, and can’t wait to put some ideas into practise. I hope to create a ‘disloyalty’ card which would require customers to visit a number of local stops and then have a choice to claim their free drink,” he continued. “ Another idea is ‘a counter-top takeover’ which would involve a local business taking over our cake counter for a week to showcase their own delights.” Above: Tom Jones has

DOWN ON THE FARM I recently had a few days off from work and took the opportunity on one of them to go walking with my eldest son in the Berwyn Mountains near where I grew up. We ate our sandwiches and sat on the hills where, as a young man, my father used to have to be on the peak before daybreak to start gathering sheep. As we looked down at the patchwork of fields in the Tanat Valley and across to the other hills around, I reflected on the fact that what most tourists think is a natural landscape is actually the product of the work of generations of farmers.

By Brian Evans, head of agriculture at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors

In order to maintain the beauty of our countryside, we need to ensure that farmers can continue to farm these areas in the traditional way, grazing the hills and maintaining dry stone walls and hedges. I’m pleased to hear that the Government has pledged to honour funding arrangements for farmers until 2020, despite Brexit, as part of a transition to new arrangements. It is important that an appropriate support scheme should continue beyond 2020 to ensure our farmers can compete with their European counterparts, who will continue to be subsidised, and to ensure that our landscapes,

which are so important for our tourism industry, are maintained. Farmers’ organisations, such as the National Farmers Union, are consulting on what a postEU domestic agricultural policy should look like. As a mediation lawyer and managing partner of a law firm with more than 200 staff, I know that good communication is critical to future success. Farmers now have a great opportunity to engage with their representatives and their MPs to help shape policy, which will preserve the best of our old traditions, and ensure a healthy future for British farming. I hope they take it.

OCTOBER 2016

ELEMENTARY, DEAR WATSON

Ringing the changes “

H

ow old were you when you got your first mobile phone, Mum?” asked my 10-year-old son, innocently. “About 25,” I said. From the withering look he gave me, I may as well have said that I went to work in just my pants or was emigrating to Mars. “No, really,” he said. I sat him down and explained that back in the day we didn’t own mobile phones. In the 1980s, only rich bankers owned mobile phones, and they were the size of a brick. When I went to college, I told him, I had to queue for an hour to telephone my parents, and if they wanted to get hold of me they had to rely on another student answering the phone then writing a message on a large blackboard (you had to hope that the person answering was sober and gave a hoot about your family life). “We used telephone boxes,” I said. “You put in 10p to call or, if you wanted to save your money, you had a secret code where you rang three times then put the phone down so your parents knew you were ready to be collected.” It all sounds ridiculous now but at the time it seemed to work. “So how old were you when you were first allowed to used a public telephone?” he asked.

I explained that it was hardly the same thing but it was probably around the same time that I was allowed out on my own or with friends without adult supervision. My eldest is 11 years old this month and the nagging for a phone of his own has well and truly started. And with it come my worries about what having a mobile involves. Will it lead to text bullying; will he start sending and receiving personal pictures; will it get stolen; will he rack up bills of thousands of pounds; and will I ever be able to

My children’s vocabulary now includes words such as Weedle, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, Pidgey and Eevee

unglue him from the screen once it is in his grubby paws? The thing is, he doesn’t even want to phone anyone, text or Facetime. He’s not interested in WhatsApp, Snapchat or YouTube. The only reason he suddenly wants a phone is to play Pokemon Go. As with most things, the Watsons are a little bit behind the rest of the world. I have been aware of Pokemon for a while but it’s only now that my children’s friends (and husband’s work colleagues) have been hunting the little blighters that my family have become involved. The only device that we own that Pokemon will work on is my phone. So it seems that it has now become public property, never where I left it and never with any charge left on it. Things have gone even

weirder. My children’s vocabulary now includes words such as Weedle, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, Pidgey and Eevee. They want to hatch eggs, seek out PokeStops and Pokegyms. There are some positives to the new addiction. My son happily volunteered to walk to the shops with us for the first time in his entire life. He detests shopping but had been told that the town centre boasted Pokemon aplenty. Secondly, Pokemon eggs only hatch when you’ve walked a certain distance; so he is now happy to walk 5km without a single roll of the eyes. As we walked, I caught sight of other people obessessively checking mobile phones while strolling. It could be that they were all waiting for the vital phone call that couldn’t be missed but it looked to me that they were fellow Pokemon hunters. Dozens of people walking around with eyes firmly on tiny screens. At first I worried about someone getting run over, or two hunters bumping into each other; when you’re tracking Pikachu it’s easy to forget real life dangers. There have been several stories of teenagers bumping into lampposts or wandering into rivers while blindly following their phones. Then I thought how sad it was that no-one was talking in real life, or acknowledging each other. I caught the eye of another mum whose son was clearly investigating a PokeStop. We smiled at each other. “Pokemon?” I asked. “Yes, it’s the only way to get him out of the house nowadays,” she said with a weak smile. So maybe it’s not all bad. They’re out walking, it gives me and fellow shoppers something to talk about. I just need to convince him that the elusive Snorlax is training in a PokeGym which just happens to be in my favourite shop and I need never nag again (except when I want that blasted phone back). email: ewatson@reviewmedia.com
