Celebrating a big birthday Hope House celebrated an outstanding 21 years of providing the very best of care and support to children and their families, at a birthday extravaganza hosted by The British Ironwork Centre, near Oswestry. Last month, guests donned their finery to attend the Hope House Gala Ball. Preparations for the evening began with Hope House and the staff at the Ironworks dressing the huge marquee with balloons and safari animal sculptures, complementing the circus theme perfectly. Guests took part in live auctions on the night raising a staggering £50,000 for the charity. Among the prizes was a diamond ring created by the centre’s resident silversmith, as well as tickets for travel on the Orient Express. As the evening’s festivities drew to an end, a stunning firework display in the grounds of the centre ensured the occasion was marked in style. The charity even received a special message from talented singer and TV personality,

Keeping little chicks happy Oswestry’s Baby Bird Cafe, in Cross Street, has a packed schedule of events to keep little ones entertained over the long summer holidays. The family friendly cafe has events and crafts on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the holidays, for as little as £1.50 a session. Activities include dinosaur crafts, yoga for children, ballerina crafts, ceramic painting, ocean bottle making and robot craft. www.babybirdcafe.co.uk for information.

Aled Jones, congratulating them on reaching this milestone. The revelling continued over the weekend as the centre hosted a huge children’s party. Among the metal safari sculptures and decorative gazebos the Ironworks welcomed more than 2000 visitors, all of whom were able to enjoy a vast array of entertainment from fire breathers to jugglers and clowns and bubble men, all in aid of celebrating the charity’s fantastic achievement. Fundraising manager Vanessa Thomas said: “Everyone at Hope House is so delighted with the results of the weekend. We raised an incredible £50,000 at the Ball on Saturday night and a further £8,000 at the Birthday Extravaganza on Sunday, making it our most fabulous fundraising weekend ever.”

Let the 2016 games commence With a month still to go, Oswestry Community Games to be held on Sunday 25 September in Cae Glas Park looks set to inspire once again in this Olympic year. Wheelchair basketball athlete Mark Fosbrook and many local sport and arts groups are ensuring that the fourth Oswestry Community Games looks set to be the greatest one yet. Guest of honour Team GB basketball player Mark will join organisations from across the area encouraging people of all ages to take part in ‘have a go’ sessions at the annual one-day festival. Mark, from Whittington, said he was delighted to be involved in the event. He said: “It is a huge honour for me to be asked to be the special guest at the Oswestry Community Games. The games is a fantastic opportunity to encourage local people to get active and bring the community together. “If I can help to motivate people to try something new then fantastic. I have been lucky enough to train at a high level but am very aware that I wouldn’t have been successful without support. I am also delighted that we will be raising money for Special Effect – a charity which uses video games and technology to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.”

Key event organisers Clive Knight and Hazel Davies are delighted the Games has secured the financial backing of Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry Sports Forum and commercial sponsors from the locality, including Active8,Primoris Homes, Pinnacle Slating and Tiling, Roofing and Salvage Depot, Nimbus Eye for Extreme Cleaning, and Mountain Challenge Events. Clive who looks after the Games’ finances said: “It is amazing to have achieved this local financial support.” Favourites from last year, including Gymnastics, Stagecoach, drum workshops, tennis and bowls will be returning, while new faces include Yoga, Oswestry Otters, Oswestry Hockey Club and Oswestry U3A. U3A will be inviting people of all ages to take short guided walks around the picturesque Cae Glas park, learning about its heritage, habitat and the arts as they stroll. New for this year is also a demo area for clubs to put on short performances. Groups, including schools, youth clubs or organisations can still sign up to get involved in trying activities that they have never tried before. Arts, dance and sports clubs still have time to sign up if they contact Clive on clive.knight182@hotmail.co.uk, 07964615858, or arts co-ordinator Hazel on 01691 670404.

On target to change children’s lives A trailblazing centre, which strives to bring increased mobility to children with cerebral palsy and developmental delay, has received a welcome financial boost from a local solicitors. The pioneering Movement Centre, based at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, near Oswestry, has been named as Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors charity for the financial year, after a visit by the firm’s Kay Kelly, partner and Head of Clinical/Medical Negligence Team. “I was very impressed to discover the work of The Movement Centre and I am delighted to support them,” said Kay. Vicky Handbury-Madin, Movement Centre fundraising manager, said: “The difference that our Targeted Training, using specially designed support frames, can make to children with cerebral palsy and global development delay is life changing. Some children can progress from crawling to walking over a period of 12 months, for others it might be about controlling their head so that they can ‘point’ with their eyes. Progress is different for every child. It’s about moving children forward whatever their starting point.” “Evidence suggests that with a 9-12 month course of Targeted Training, children with cerebral palsy are three to four times more likely to develop functional skills than with physiotherapy alone,” she continued. “We are a charity and fundraising is a vital part of what we do. We are not NHS funded and rely on support from individuals and businesses to continue our work. “We are incredibly grateful for Lanyon Bowdler’s support in choosing The Movement

New charity shop to help Kenyan pupils An Ellesmere couple have opened a charity shop in Oswestry to help fund education for children in rural Kenya. Bill and Lynn Morris set up the Kenyan Schools Project (KSP) in 2007 to provide funds and supplies to children in Kenya. They were inspired to help after visiting a school while on holiday. “When we saw what the children had to put up with in order to receive an education, we were so shocked. They were sat on concrete floors, barefoot and having to share pencils, paper and books,” remembers Lynn. KSP has now helped 11 schools and five orphanages in Kenya. Donations to the shop at 37 Bailey Street are welcome.

But if it happens to you, it can lead to considerable suffering,” said Lanyon Bowdler marketing director Amanda Jones. “Successfully claims can help replace lost earnings, and providing funds for care and treatment.” Call Ellie Preece on 01691 652241 to book an appointment.

Visitor centre closes The Visitor Information Centre at Mile End, near Oswestry, has closed. Tourist enquiries will now be handled by Oswestry Borderland Tourism Ltd under a contract with Shropshire Council. Personal callers will be able to obtain information from the Heritage Centre in Oswestry, which is run by Oswestry Borderland Tourism Ltd, as well as local attractions. A town and area information board will be provided at the Mile End service area promoting the availability of local visitor information services in Oswestry and at nearby tourist attractions. The decision to close Mile End VIC and award a contract to Oswestry Borderland Tourism Ltd was made by Shropshire Council’s Cabinet in March 2016. Stuart West, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “Though Mile End VIC is closing, people will still be able to access and receive visitor information from Oswestry Borderland Tourism Ltd, by visiting the Heritage Centre, from the board that will be in place at Mile End or from a wide range of local attractions and websites.” The Mile End VIC provided services to fewer than 30,000 visitors last year, a significant decrease on the peak number of 76,000 in 2008. Oswestry Heritage Centre is based in the town centre next to St. Oswald’s Church. It is open all year, Monday to Saturday and deals with enquiries in person, by letter, email and telephone. The service is operated with paid staff by Oswestry Borderland Tourism Ltd.

BRONZE AGE Artist Tim Turner’s work took an unusual turn when he was asked to produce a bronze sculpture of a little-known French-born king

O

swestry artist Tim Turner will be travelling to France this month to unveil a bronze bust of a 19th century king. He has spent the last year working on the sculpture of Orelie-Antoine I – the first King of Araucania and Patagonia – which was commissioned in preparation for the bicentenary of the king’s birth. Tim and his wife will attend the grand unveiling in Tourtoirac in the Dordogne region during a cultural festival in August. It’s been an unusual project for the artist who usually specialises in paint and print but he has felt privileged to have designed and created the historically important bust. “Naturally it is a great honour, not only to be asked but the thought and sense of achievement gained in having produced a public sculpture that will be on permanent display for posterity,” he says. “I feel very privileged and lucky to be able to fulfil such a project. There was initial trepidation as I had not attempted any figurative sculpture for over a decade and nothing ever on the scale required,” he admits. Tim is a full-time artist who produces mainly paintings and prints, along with the occasional sculpture. With an interest in literature, he also sells antique books as a sideline, a throwback from his time working in Foyles Bookshop in London as a young graduate. He has exhibited across Europe and has been involved with several printmaking exhibitions in London and in Milan, Italy. The last sculpture he exhibited was at the V&A Museum, in London. Tim’s career began on an Art Foundation course at Shrewsbury College: “I was intending to pursue a career in figurative sculpture. However, I was diverted by a well-meaning tutor and went on to do a degree in painting at Loughborough. This was followed by a masters degree in printmaking at the Royal College of Art, in London.” Tim has fond memories of his time studying there, regularly rubbing shoulders with the elite and famous in the art world. “There were regular lectures by the art world’s highest achievers, also one-to-one tutorials with

artists such as pop art’s Peter Blake and abstract painters Terry Frost and John Hoyland. “London was a hub of artistic activity and a new British art scene was just emerging. It was very different from Oswestry School, and it was amazing to have so much freedom in a big city.” However Tim is proud of his Oswestry roots and still lives in the town. “I’ve always maintained a healthy sporting lifestyle gained from school, always playing a high standard of rugby and cricket where possible. “I have maintained links with Oswestry School and have served on the Old Oswestrians committee.” Tim was first asked to take on the bronze bust project in June 2015, working on two small versions of the bust to begin with. He started work on the approved large version in October, taking roughly two months on and off to do the modelling in clay. The final version was approved at the start of 2016 and moulding commenced shortly after.

Castle Fine Arts Foundry in Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, near Oswestry, cast the statue. After the unveiling, Tim expects to get back to his first love of painting and printworks. “I plan to complete the French commission project and I am currently working on a miniature version of the large bust which will be reproduced in an exclusive limited edition of bronze as well as versions in plaster and possibly resin which will be made available to the museum in Tourtoirac. I am also working to complete a screen-print which will also be sold at the cultural festival. “After that, I plan to return to painting and making more prints,” he says. “Figurative sculpture was a complete departure from my previous works, however I am always open to any commissions and creative ventures in both two and three dimensions.” For more details email Tim Turner at oswestrian@aol.com

DEFIBRILLATOR CAMPAIGN

Saving lives in memory of Sue

n Fundraiser cream tea with SADS UK supporters (left to right): Michael Wilson (Anne’s son), Margaret Clegg, Anthony Greenwood, Anne Wilson and Dorothy Thomas

n Happier times: Anne’s daughter Sue with husband Shaun

After tragically losing her own daughter, a brave Oswestry mum continues to campaign for life-saving defibrillators which could help prevent further needless deaths

S

chools across Oswestry have lifesaving equipment installed thanks to an inspirational lady whose own daughter died suddenly when she was just 28 years old. Anne Wilson lost daughter Sue Yost in 1995. She was a fit and active young lady, who was a linguist in the Army and was posted out in Cyprus. She was happily married to husband Shaun, who was also in the forces and due to return from a four-month tour in Bosnia. Sue had her whole life ahead of her, when she died suddenly while swimming. “She was on a day off in the swimming pool just doing lengths when it happened,” says Anne. “She was a sporty girl and there were no signs of any health problems but she just stopped swimming and started to go under. Someone dived in to pull her out but there was nothing anyone could do to save her in time,” she continues. Anne now recognises that Sue died due to SADS – Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome. SADS is a genetic heart condition that affects young people thought to be healthy who suffer potentially fatal arrhythmias (where the heart beats chaotically, either too slow or dangerously fast) especially during exercise. A defibrillator – a machine used to give an electric shock to restart a patient’s heart when they are in cardiac arrest – might have saved her. Since Sue’s death, Anne has campaigned

and raised funds to provide local schools with this life saving equipment. She has raised thousands of pounds and inspired eight schools in the area to raise money to install defibrillators. These include many places that Sue attended as a youngster including The Marches School and NSC Walford College. Other schools have included Holy Trinity Primary School, Lakeland School, Ellesmere College and Whittington Primary School. Anne was inspired to raise money after listening to a talk by Anne Jolly of SADS UK. Anne Jolly, who was nominated as Woman of the Year in 2010, lost her sporty teenage son Ashley to SADS and went on to found charity SADS UK. “The Ashley Jolly SAD Trust was set up locally after the sudden and unexpected death of Ashley at the age of just 16. He went to bed on 29 May 1998 and didn’t wake up in the morning,” explains Anne. “He was a fit and healthy young teenager, played football twice a week, did long cycle rides with his father and was never ill. After his death, his mother Anne felt compelled to find out why her fit, healthy and happy son had died in this way. It seemed incomprehensible and no-one was able to explain what had happened. She was told it as like an adult cot death,” says Anne. “She spent six months searching the internet, writing to hospitals and liaising with experts to try to find out why he had passed away so suddenly. Eventually she discovered

n Anne Wilson (right) with her good friend and loyal SADS supporter Margaret Clegg

that some conditions of the heart affect the rhythm. They cause a dangerous arrhythmia which can cause death if not treated. Hence why it is called SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome).” Anne could relate to her pain and to her need to do something to help others and make some sort of sense of the tragedy. “I celebrated my birthday in 2010 and was inspired to ask for donations towards a defibrillator. The campaign just grew from then.” Anne has been supporting SADS UK’s Big Shock campaign since then, only recently taking time out after a diagnosis of breast cancer from which she is recovering. Each defibrillator costs £1,300 to buy, fit and service. The Shropshire Review is supporting Anne’s campaign to see defibrillators in every school and sports club in the region. Please contact us on ewatson@reviewmedia.com for advice on raising funds for a defibrillator.

EDUCATION

Town’s first education event makes learning fun for all

E

ddie the Eagle Edwards was among inspirational guests offering their advice and expertise to youngsters and educators at Marches Academy Trust’s inaugural Festival of Education. Eddie, who shot to fame as Britain’s first Olympic ski-jumper in 1988 at the Calgary Winter Olympics, was a highlight at the one-day event that attracted local schoolchildren and professionals from across the country. The festival brought together educators from across the county and far beyond, with delegates making the trek from as far as Scotland to listen to talks from esteemed practitioners such as Pank Patel (Regional Schools Commissioner for the West Midlands), Professor Mick Waters (former Director of Curriculum at QCA) and Dr Peter DeWitt (an expert in Visible Learning, the key theme of the festival). The day continued with presentations by the RSC, Dr Nick Ware and London Fields Primary school. However, the event was not solely for teachers. Students from across the area got to enjoy an entire day of activities, workshops and inspirational talks from the likes of Eddie the Eagle and Oswestry’s Bafta-winning filmmaker Andy Evans. Eddie, who has been immortalised in the recent docu-comedy film Eddie the Eagle, sent a clear message that if you work hard enough you can achieve what you want. While Mr Evans told students that being from a small town in Shropshire doesn’t mean the likes of Hollywood success is out of one’s grasp. The day ended with a special screening of Set Fire to the Stars, a triple BAFTA-winning film starring Elijah Wood and Celyn Jones, produced by Andy Evans. The festival also offered students of all ages the opportunity to get involved in all kinds of

n Educational stands included Forestry Commission enjoyable and educational goings-on. One moment students were being put through their paces on assault courses by the Armed Forces, and the next they were being shown the art of fencing while Roman soldiers and giant Cretaceous theropods looked on. The event, for which Shropshire Review was proud to be media partner, was a huge success all round. The aim of the festival was to give both teachers and students chances that might otherwise be unavailable to them, providing valuable professional development for the former, and vital information and experience for the latter. Ruth Lloyd, Deputy Headteacher at The Marches School and one of the event’s lead organisers, said: “What an amazing day! It was filled with an impressive list of innovative and influential educators, featuring fascinating talks, from the opening address by Pank Patel to the passionate keynote presentation by Professor Mick Waters. “I believe that the festival was unique and ground breaking – for the first time we moved

One of the speakers remarked that ours was ‘one of the best audiences ever’ and we were commended on our venue, our hospitality and our organisation. Put it in neutral For a timeless look that comes up season after season, you can’t beat neutrals. Lace applique lamp from George Home, £17

Think white, grey, beige, cream – this is a trend that suits any and every style of house. “Naturals always stay on trend so no worries about ageing! You could add a splash of colour using cushions which is an inexpensive way to change the look regularly,” say the experts at Just Jayne in Bridgnorth. Light, neutral colours accentuate a feeling of space and brightness so are perfect for small rooms; but it’s a look that’s also stunning in a large, open plan environment. Unless you do want to add a standout pop of zinging colour though, we say that to really be effective, keep it as simple and tonal as you can.

Subtle yet beautiful Harlequin fabrics from Just Jayne, Bridgnorth Urban Fusion picture, £85 from Alan Ward

BOTTOM LEFT: From pure white to grey, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to paints for a Neutrals scheme. French Grey Tales in Bridgnorth stocks Autentico chalk paints, from £5.95 for 100ml

Anya sofa in soft grey with button feature, £349.99 from Oak Furniture Shop, Oswestry

HOMEFIRST

MAKE SPACE FOR SUMMER Give your home a simple summer makeover with our 10 top tips:

1 2 3

Flowers in the fireplace

7 8

Time to get packing

If you have lots of cushions and throws on the bed, now is the time to put them away for a few months. Swap heavy rugs for a lighter, natural finish such as jute, or even an indoor/outdoor rug.

Take the logs out of the basket and use potted plants instead. Place a big vase of blooms in the hearth or in front of the fire.

Let the sun shine in

Take down your thick, heavy curtains and replace with sheer drapes or voiles.

Scents of summer

If you use scented candles, make sure you are using fresh floral scents. Don’t be tempted to ‘use up’ winter candles; put them away until November! Another alternative is to go for diffusers to scent a room, as they look more summery than candles. Swap your soaps and shower gels for summer smells, too.

4 5

Mediterranean feel

Table manners

Pack away the tablecloth and any heavy placemats; replace with bamboo or woven mats. You can pick up bright and cheery crockery with a Spanish or Moroccan feel quite cheaply at places such as TK Maxx – go for the unmatched look.

9 10

A breath of fresh air

Don’t just open the window in a room; prop open the door and open the windows in other rooms too, so the air can circulate throughout the house.

Find a focal point

Cover up

Dark coloured chairs? Simply cover them with acres of white cotton, tucked in to create a slip cover, and you’ve instantly lightened the room.

Walk into each room in turn and see where the eye is drawn. Make this area the focus of your summer scheme.

n A simple arrangement of daisies looks the part

n If possible, pack away cushions and

throws; if you really can’t do without them, make sure they are light and summery

Take a tip from Christmas

It’s not only in December that we can put the decorations up. Flower-shaped fairy lights and summer bunting will brighten up a room no end. And why not make summer garlands for the mantelpiece, instead of Christmas wreaths?

6

n Look out for crockery with a

Let the children loose

Get them to arrange small posies of daisies from the lawn, jars of herbs and collections of shells from the seaside to add a simple, carefree look.

n Create garlands with flowers, and ensure scented candles are summer scents

No Brexit blues in Oswestry, says our Secret Agent The dust is still settling after the nation’s decision to leave the EU last month and experts are arguing among themselves about the long-term effect it will have. While the stock markets seem to be in turmoil, one market that is particularly concerning to many is housing. Kate Howell, of Woodhead Sales and Lettings in the centre of Oswestry, is our ‘Secret Agent’, lifting the lid on the world of property. This month Kate’s reflecting on what a Brexit means for the Oswestry property market: “Last month (pre-referendum), I predicted it would be ‘business as usual’ in Oswestry regardless of the referendum result, and I’m glad to report that is exactly what it is. Last month it felt like people were holding back, waiting anxiously for the result. And after a result that

seemed to shock the nation, we very quickly settled back down to business. “May was a month of uncertainty for potential house buyers and there was a drop in demand, quickly followed by a sharp spike in viewings and sales agreed following the results of the referendum. I’m in the property letting and sales market and I’m pleased to report that all of the figures are on the up. “My advice now is the same as it always has been to prospective property buyers; as long as they have a reasonable deposit and are looking to live in the home long-term, they should go ahead with any agreed purchase. “Nationally there are more positive signs in the housing market with mortgage market looking very healthy and set to improve further if interest rates fall, which they are predicted to do later this year.

n Post-Brexit, it’s business as usual for the

Oswestry property market, says Kate Woodhead

“It’s too early to know what the full impact of the vote to leave the EU will be on the property market, but what we do know is that we’re in a growth area, sheltered from the price fluctuations experienced by other parts of the country, so we’ve every reason to be positive about the Oswestry housing market.”

Sunny delights built with family in mind

T

he word ‘Tesni’ means ‘warmed by the sun’ in Welsh. A poetic, bardic word also associated with magical charm, it sums up the approach of Tesni homes and the way Tesni feels about the homes they are building. It also ties the business to its roots, situated as they are on the Welsh/English border and with a grounding in the renewable energy and sustainable development sector. Tesni is delighted to present six, individually-designed, four-bedroom homes in Morda Road, Oswestry. Tesni sales manager Lorraine Hopkins said: “At Tesni, we love the great outdoors, carefree days and the long summer nights and believe happy homes make for happy people, which is why it’s important to create a living environment that encourages the whole family to thrive. “We try to capture that magical charm in our homes, by cleverly combining design expertise with an understanding of the importance of ecological innovation and responsible building. “We want to create calm and comfortable spaces filled with warmth and light. All our homes are fitted with photovoltaic solar panels which harness the sun’s energy, even on cloudy days, to power lights and household appliances. This not only reduces electricity bills but cuts nearly two tonnes from the carbon footprint of each home every year. “Large windows are complemented by Velux sun pipes which capture the rays of light on the roof, transporting them through reflective tubes to provide additional illumination. Sun pipes are a great energy-saver, delivering lots more light than a lightbulb and removing the need for lights to be switched on during the day. “We’ve installed a heat recovery system in all our homes which removes the stale air from your home and replaces it with fresh air from outside. It does all this without removing heat from your home, and helps keep energy bills nice and low. “These are just a few of the features of a Tesni home. Home really is where the heart is and our homes have a lot of heart.”

n With natural light and

low energy bills, Tesni homes are built to be happy homes which bring sunshine into the lives of the families that buy them

DOWN TO EARTH

Long summer days in a Shropshire garden August is an idyllic time for humans and wildlife: lazy buzzing bees and flitting butterflies abound in the garden, gathering nectar for the autumn and winter months ahead, whilst humans reflect on the hard work put into their gardens during spring and summer. And there are plenty of gardens to enjoy in our beautiful county, many of which open their gates to visitors in August as part of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) in Shropshire which raises money for nursing and caring charities. Late summer beauties to enjoy this month include: Upper Shelderton House, at Shelderton near Clungunford on the outskirts of Ludlow, opened last year for the first time for NGS, to great acclaim. This 6.5 acre garden changes in late summer to a highly productive one with its newly designed kitchen garden full of interesting fruit and vegetables complementing the woodland and pond areas and large sweeping lawns. Open from 2-5pm each day over the August Bank Holiday (Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August), admission is £4 for adults, free for children. Ever-popular NGS gardens that look wonderful all year round include Windy Ridge at Little Wenlock near Telford, packed with exciting

n Garden sculptures

at Windy Ridge, Little Wenlock, which is open to visitors on 14 August and 4 September

and rare plants in a cohesive, attractive design and interesting – sometimes quirky – sculptures, enhancing this lovely green space. Open on Sunday 14 August (and Sunday 4 September) from 12-5pm, admission is £5 for adults, free for children. Another popular late summer garden is the five acres of mature garden, including a huge productive garden packed full of produce in August, at Goldstone Hall, near Market Drayton: a lovely place to visit on a summer’s afternoon

Petals perfect for bees Each summer, the Shropshire countryside is awash with brightly coloured fields of delphinium and wild flowers grown by Shropshire Petals. These flowers are grown predominantly to dry and become confetti for weddings and events, but the fields also become home to a number of bees as they collect pollen from them. According to Friends of the Earth, the UK has lost a shocking 20 species of bees with a further quarter on the red list of threatened species. Bees depend on flowers for food, and in the past 60 years 97% of wildflower meadows have disappeared. Shropshire Petals’ flowers bloom through July and August providing plenty of food for bees for several weeks each year. The firm grows a wide range of flowers, including delphiniums, calendula and cornflowers in an array of colours, including blues, purples and yellows in a variety of different shades, which are particularly attractive to a range of bee species. Bees prefer flat or shallow blossom, making the calendula perfect as they open fully to show off their centre, making it easy for the bees to get to, and the petals make a great landing spot. Delphiniums are also renowned as a favourite for bees due to their nectar spurs. Jim Bubb, managing director at Shropshire Petals, says: “Good pollination is important to our flower field development and likewise, our flowers are important to increasing the bee population – they go hand in hand and we are proud to be able to help such an important cause. “We don’t use any machinery for picking our flowers as they are all picked by hand. Our pickers are very careful to ensure that bees are kept safe by checking each flower they pick is free from bees. If there are bees collecting pollen on flowers when they are picking, they carefully encourage them to move on.” To see the pretty Shropshire Petals fields, you can view them from the A41 near Newport.

especially to see its double herbaceous border which looks magnificent in late summer. There are three opportunities to visit: Wednesday 10, Wednesday 17 and Wednesday 31 August (2-5pm). Admission is £4.50 for adults, free for children. So get out and about in the lazy, late summer and enjoy a Shropshire garden – and raise money for important charities at the same time. AUGUST 2016

SHREWSBURY FLOWER SHOW

Flowers, fireworks and family fun

S

hrewsbury Flower Show is the world’s longest running independent flower show. Nearly every year since 1875 – the only exceptions being during both world wars – the show has been held in the heart of Shrewsbury’s town centre. On 12 and 13 August the beautiful 29-acre Quarry Park will be awash with wonderful flowers, fabulous food and live entertainment – the ultimate summer day out! This is one of the country’s premier flower show events, attracting top exhibitors from all over the country so expect fantastic floral displays, horticultural competitions and high quality trade stands. With children 15 years and under admitted free when accompanied with an adult, and a dedicated children’s area which features lots of activities, unusual animals to see, ponies and ducks to pet, plus much more, Shrewsbury Flower Show is an ideal family day out. The large Quarry Marquee is home to the top national nurseries and growers who create stunning displays to admire and inspire, whilst the Severn Marquee is full of home grown flowers and vegetables. Advice is on hand from many exhibitors and horticultural organisations. The Dingle is awash with beauty with spectacular floral art creations on display. The arena offers a variety of entertainment to suit every taste. The major attraction for 2016 is The Musical Ride of the Household Cavalry

Mounted Regiment who will perform twice each day with 24 horses. Other highlights include Grade A showjumping and Dingle Fingle comedy car act. There’s live music on Friday night from The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and on Saturday from The Christians. Throughout the event will be performances from choirs, while a massed band finale and stunning firework display wrap up the show on both nights. For the green fingered visitors, horticultural expert Sarah Raven will be sharing gardening tips and advice. Sarah has written for The Daily Telegraph, Country Living, Gardens Illustrated, Gardeners’ World Magazine, The English Garden and Sainsbury’s Magazine. Her gardening and cookery books have won her a number of awards. Sarah has presented on BBC Gardeners’ World and had a well-received TV series in 2012 called Bees, Butterflies and Blooms, following her attempts to flower up the nation to hugely increase insect habitat and food supply. Over in the dedicated Foodhall celebrity chef Gizzi Erskine will be creating mouth-watering, indulgent but healthy food. Her edgy attitude has caught the attention of the fashion world and she regularly makes the fashion pages of the UK’s style magazines. There are lots of great shopping opportunities in the large trade stands area and wonderful unique gifts are on offer in the craft marquee and artisan crafts and farmers’ market.

IT’S GOODBYE SHINE,

HELLO MATTE

S

hiny, glossy lips are perfect for a daytime look but when night comes, take your lips over to the matte side and make a bold statement. Matte lip glosses and lipsticks are available from most cosmetic companies. They are easy to apply and look great in an instant.

HOW TO CONQUER THE MATTE LOOK: Tip 1: Always brush teeth before applying your lip colour and stroke your toothpaste-free brush over your lips once or twice to gently exfoliate any dry skin. Tip 2: Apply a lip balm 10 minutes before your matte lip product application, then remove all traces of the balm before putting it on. Tip 3: Apply a concealer to your lips.

2 1

£1 .50

£1

Tip 4: Use a matching lip liner, preferably the same brand as your lipstick, to successfully match the colour. Remember by using lip liner you can make your lips appear smaller or larger. Draw slightly over the line to achieve the illusion of bigger lips and just inside the line to shrink lips.

£2 .99

Tip 5: Apply the matte lipstick or lip gloss and give it a few seconds to dry, then repeat. Sometimes you may need to repeat again. Once it is dry, do not apply any other products to your lips. Matte lips feel dry and it takes some getting used to but avoid licking your lips. Can’t get enough of the matte look? Then try the matte look nail varnish.

DOWN ON THE FARM The agricultural show season is in full swing and I always enjoy attending as many events as I can – both in a personal and professional capacity. Oswestry Show is next on the calendar and is always a delightful occasion. Agricultural shows are a great chance for farmers and rural workers to let their hair down and celebrate their successes. Despite enormously challenging times, livestock entries have maintained a good level and the shows themselves still attract large numbers of visitors, which shows that the rural

By Brian Evans, head of agriculture at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors

economy is more than holding its own. As a firm, we are looking forward to hosting a stand at this year’s Oswestry Show because it’s a great opportunity to catch up with clients, and of course meet new ones. We had a stand at Shropshire County Show in May, and the overriding message from people there was that things are still very tough, particularly for dairy farmers. There was also a lot of talk about the EU referendum and how the outcome might affect farmers, and I expect that will continue to be a hot topic at Oswestry Show too.

Communication at times of uncertainty is key, which is why agricultural shows are so important. Farming can be a lonely business, so opportunities to meet up with friends and fellow workers to discuss how things are going are invaluable. There will of course be numerous legal changes over the coming years as the UK negotiates its exit from the EU, so by attending events like Oswestry Show, we will be on hand to offer our advice and support to a community that we are proud to be a part of. We look forward to seeing you there!

Succulent summer

any think of spring as the traditional season to eat lamb but summer is the ideal time to enjoy local lamb at its best. Lamb’s deep flavour makes it perfect for strong seasoning – not just mint and rosemary but lemon, garlic, coriander or chilli. The fat also makes it just right for summer grilling; lamb is great on the barbecue whether quick and easy kebabs or slow-roasted over coals. So let’s celebrate summer with Welsh lamb.

Summer Welsh lamb with blueberry, red wine and rosemary Ingredients ½ lamb leg joint or shoulder joint 3 cloves garlic, crushed 5 sprigs fresh rosemary 150ml (¼pt) red wine 150ml (¼pt) blueberry juice 15ml (1tbsp) set honey 450g (1lb) new potatoes 2 onions, peeled and cut into wedges 1 bulb garlic

Method Take a lean boned ½ lamb leg joint or use a boned and rolled shoulder joint, remove the string and lay flat. Place the flat joint into a dish and add garlic and rosemary. Rub into the lamb then pour over red wine, blueberry juice and honey. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 1-2 hours. Remove from the marinade and thread metal skewers criss crossing through the meat to keep flat. Cook on a lidded or covered barbecue: place flat on to the barbecue grid not too close to the coals, turning frequently for about 40-50 minutes. Alternatively place directly on to the shelf in a preheated oven (Gas mark 4-5, 180°C, 350°F), placing a tray underneath to catch the drips, for about 40-50 minutes until browned on the outside and still a little pink in the centre. Thoroughly boil the remaining marinade for at least 5 minutes and serve poured over the lamb joint, as a thin ‘gravy’. If using the oven roast new potatoes, onion wedges and garlic bulb at the same time for approx 40 minutes until roasted and golden. Squeeze garlic purée from the skins and add with the onions to 60ml (4tbsp) mayonnaise. Serve the lamb carved into chunks with new potatoes, garlic and onion mayo, and heaps of seasonal green salad.

Welsh lamb and feta burgers Ingredients 450g (1lb) lamb mince 30ml (2tbsp) fresh mint, chopped Black pepper 75g (3oz) feta, crumbled Guacamole

Method In a bowl mix together lamb mince, fresh mint, black pepper and feta, combine well together. Shape into 6 medium sized burgers and cook under a preheated grill or barbecue for approx 12 minutes or until thoroughly cooked. Serve in toasted ciabatta rolls with a dollop of pre-made guacamole, large seasonal salad and a side dish of olives.

Racks of Welsh lamb with rosemary, lemon and garlic Ingredients 2 lean racks of Welsh Lamb 2 large sprigs fresh rosemary 1 lemon, rind removed and juice 3 garlic cloves, cut in half 30ml (2tbsp) olive oil Black pepper

Method Preheat the oven to gas mark 4-5, 180°C, 350°F. Take 2 lean racks of lamb and calculate the cooking time: Medium - 25 minutes per 450g/½kg (1lb) plus 25 minutes; Well Done - 30 minutes per 450g/½kg (1lb) plus 30 minutes. Mix together rosemary, lemon rind and juice, garlic, olive oil and seasoning, and rub into the racks. Cook on a preheated barbecue with a lid or place on to a rack in a roasting tray and oven roast for the calculated cooking time.Serve the lamb with new potatoes and a rocket and grape salad.

Leg of Welsh lamb with coconut, chilli and coriander Ingredients 1 boneless leg of Welsh lamb 400ml (approx) can reduced fat coconut milk

2 red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed Fresh coriander, roughly chopped 1 lime, grated rind and juice

Method Remove strings and flatten out lamb. Place boneless leg of lamb into a shallow dish and add the marinade ingredients. Thoroughly combine together, cover and place in fridge for 1 hour. Remove from the marinade and thread metal skewers crisscrossing through the meat to keep flat. Cook on a lidded or covered barbecue – place flat on to the barbecue grid (not too close to the coals) turning frequently for about 40-50 minutes. Alternatively place directly on to the shelf in a preheated oven (gas mark 4-5, 180°C, 350°F, place a tray underneath to catch the drips) for about 40-50 minutes until browned on the outside and still a little pink in the centre. Take reserved marinade and boil thoroughly until thickened slightly (about 5 minutes) and serve drizzled over the lamb. Serve with Chinese stir-fry vegetables.

It’s not all about the flora at Shrewsbury Flower Show from 12-13 August. There’ll be plenty to tickle the tastebuds in the food hall, including the popular Flower & White (formerly Little Round Cake Company), who’ll be tempting visitors with sweet threats including their Merangz, Tweenerz and Muffinz. North Shropshire gin fans are invited to celebrate the perfect G&T at Oswestry Sweeney Hotel’s Summer Gin Fest. Promising entertainment, barbecue, fireworks and plenty of drinks (not just gin), the party takes place from 28-29 August from 3pm-11pm. G&Ts priced £5. Free admission but booking is essential. Telephone 01691 652450. Catering students from New College Telford earned high praise from the judges for their performance in the final of the UK’s Young Seafood Chef of the Year competition. Callum Moffat and Adam Ashley made up one of just nine teams from across the British Isles which qualified for the final, held in Grimsby. Hospital food isn’t often given rave reviews but the quality of food at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, near Oswestry, has been highlighted in a national patient survey – which rates it as the best in the country. Patients selected to take part in the Care Quality Commission’s adult inpatient survey 2015 gave an average mark of 7.9 out of 10 for catering. Shropshire’s Kerry Vale Vineyard is celebrating for a third year running after winning two awards in this year’s UK wine industry national competition. The vineyard, just outside Montgomery, won two awards for its wines at the UK Vineyard Association’s prestigious National Competition. The vineyard won a Silver Award for its ‘Shropshire Lady’ (also known as Solaris) dry white wine and a Bronze Award for the ‘Summer Days’ medium white wine. Shrewsbury College’s Origins restaurant has been ‘highly commended’ in the AA College Rosette Scheme. AA hotel and restaurant inspectors commented: ‘The team here are very professional and service is structured and well-paced. All the team were immaculate in their presentation, giving a professional impression in line with industry standards.’ A former Oswestry restaurant has been put on the market. The historic Dining Rooms, formerly known as The Walls, is for sale following the retirement of owners Geoff Hughes and Kate Bottoms.

AMBER’S WOODFIRED KITCHEN

FIRED UP FOR FESTIVITIES

O

nce hidden away in a hot, stuffy kitchen, over the past few years Amber and Jolyon Iles have become used to meeting their customers at festivals, food fairs, weddings and fetes. Cooking up woodfired pizzas and mezze at events across the county, Amber’s Woodfired Kitchen, based in Oswestry, has become a familiar sight at local festivals and gatherings. But the decision to launch the company in 2013 was a leap of faith for owners Amber and Jolyon, who had previously worked together as chefs. The idea came when they were asked by a vegetarian friend to provide a wedding feast for 160 guests. “She was on a tight budget, but with our cheffing background and knowledge of world foods and flavours, I knew we could deliver the food she wanted,” says Amber. It was such a huge success that Amber began to think that it might be possible to pursue her dream of self employment, combining something that she was both good at and passionate about. They worked hard during that first year to build the business. They invested in a wood fired oven, focusing their menus on world foods and Moroccan and Middle Eastern dishes, and built a reputation for producing high quality, tasty and fresh food. They also helped crowd fund a small, family friendly music and arts festival called ‘Ymuno’ (which means unite) in North Wales. “Being the sole caterers on a site of 1,000 people was exhausting and a huge learning curve,” remembers Amber, “but the feedback we received from customers that weekend was amazing!” Last month they returned to the festival as catering managers. In 2016, as well as popping up at festivals and events, weddings and parties, Amber’s Woodfired Kitchen was proud to cater at Hope House charity’s 21st birthday staff party and enjoyed being part of Oswestry’s popular food festival. The pair have also joined forces with Oswestry’s Stonehouse Brewery as they launch their new Sweeney Mountain cider. Amber has developed a new bbq pulled pork pizza to complement the cider, and will be offering this, along with their usual pizza menu, at Stonehouse Brewery in Weston, near Oswestry on Friday evenings 5pm-7pm and Saturdays 12pm-5pm throughout the summer (except where they are at weddings and festivals, check the Amber’s Wood Fired Kitchen Facebook page). “I’m so pleased I made the decision to go self-employed,” says Amber. “It’s incredibly hard work, but we love creating dishes with the woodfired oven and I’m passionate about producing fantastic food for people to enjoy. My

ultimate goal is to have a restaurant of my own in Oswestry or Shrewsbury one day.” For more information or enquiries amberswoodfiredkitchen.co.uk

Amber’s Woodfired Pulled Pork Recipe

Our pulled pork recipe makes a great pizza topping, particularly with a homemade BBQ sauce base. Or alternatively, serve in a fresh white bap with a crunchy coleslaw, such as yummy apple & fennel. Enjoy!

Amber x Ingredients 1.8kg – 2kg joint of pork shoulder (score fat with blade or ask your butcher to do it) Marinade 880ml Sweeney Mountain Cider 440ml water 55ml Worcestershire sauce 40g soft brown or muscavado sugar 40g sea salt Dry rub 2 tbsp good quality smoked paprika 1 tbsp fresh ground pepper 1 tbsp sea salt 1 tbsp mustard powder 2 whole chipotle chillies (ground in spice blender or use 1 tbsp chili powder) 1 tbsp cumin 1 tbsp soft brown sugar 1 tbsp garlic powder

Method The idea is to cook ‘low and slow’. We use our wood fired oven, which gives it even more flavour, but you can still cook in a regular oven. Mix the marinade ingredients together until the sugar and salt have dissolved. Add the pork, cover, and refrigerate overnight. Preheat the oven to gas 7, 220°C, 200°C fan. Remove the pork from the liquid, pat dry and allow it to come up to room temperature (approx. 15 minutes). Save the liquid for the cooking process. Rub 1-2 tablespoons of the dry rub into the meat until covered. Save the rest of the rub in a small mason jar (or other sealed container) for next time. Place the pork in a roasting tin. Roast uncovered, for 30 minutes, to seal and brown the meat. Remove the joint from the oven and reduce the temperature to gas 2, 150°C, 130°C fan oven. Cover the meat with foil and seal it tightly around the edges of the tin. Return to the oven for 51/2 hours and baste every hour with the cooking juices to help keep the meat moist. Baste with the marinade liquid if needed. Once cooked allow meat to rest for 20mins. Set aside the cooking juices. Pull the meat apart using 2 forks. Spoon off any fat that has risen to the top of the cooking juices and discard. Moisten shredded meat.

It may seem as if we haven’t experienced high temperatures this summer, but keeping safe in the sun is as important as ever, says John Gentle, of Day Lewis pharmacy Everyone knows the importance of sun protection and we’ve all heard horror stories about how much damage overexposure to the sun can cause. But do we really know how to protect ourselves and our loved ones? I’m John Gentle, superintendent pharmacist at Day Lewis in Oswald Road, Oswestry (formerly The Pharmacy @ Caxton) and in this month’s column I’m focusing on sun safety with some tips to bear in mind throughout the summer. When you’ve spent most of the last year wrapped up in plenty of layers trying to keep warm, it can be easy to forget about SPF, sunburn and skin cancer. Suddenly, your summer holiday is just around the corner and you’re standing in a shop confronted by a baffling array of cream, lotions and sprays. Here at Day Lewis, we’re always more than willing to chat about protection and give you some advice on what you should – and shouldn’t – be doing to stay safe in the sun. Our top tips include being very careful about children’s sun cream. It really isn’t enough to slap some Factor 30 on them in the morning and hope for the best, especially if they’re jumping in and out of the swimming pool (or paddling pool if we get a warm summer here) and changing clothes throughout the day. You need to opt for the highest factor possible, check the cream you’re using is waterproof not just water resistant and ensure you re-apply often through the day. It’s also worth getting them to wear a T-shirt over their swimwear in really warm weather. Anyone with a photosensitive condition also needs to think particularly carefully about sun protection. It may be possible to get sun cream on prescription so it’s definitely worth booking an appointment with your GP to discuss this. As well as plenty of sun protection, we also advise all travellers to take a small first aid kit away with them which includes all the basics you may need such as plasters, insect repellents and antiseptic creams. If you’re unsure about what to take then our staff are always willing to advise. Also do remember even if you’re not going abroad this summer, any warm days in England do require some SPF protection. It’s worth stocking up now to ensure you have some on hand if the sun makes an appearance – perhaps keep a bottle in your car so it’s with you if you go out for the day. A fantastic source of advice, and a good way to get the children interested in sun protection, is the Slip! Slop! Slap! Campaign which originally launched in Australia in the 80s as a response to rising skin cancer rates. The message is just as important today and fun cartoons such as this can really go a long way to encouraging kids to remember what to do when the sun’s got his hat on. Day Lewis is open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6pm and 8.30am to noon on a Saturday. It also offers a prescription delivery service. Anybody wanting advice or to book a review can call Mr Gentle and his team on (01691) 653033.

Oswestry mayor Cllr Paul Milner was delighted to be part of the town’s celebration. He said: “It gave me great pleasure to see so many people coming out to pay tribute and celebrate the success of the clubs. I was

Charity day swings into action NFU Welshpool is ‘tee-ming’ up with Welshpool Cricket Club for its annual charity golf day to raise valuable funds for two local charities, Severn Hospice and the Heulwen Trust. Now in its fifth year, the golf day will take place on Friday 16 September at Arscott Golf Club. With its interesting and varied typography, gentle hills and undulating fairways, Arscott Golf Club is the perfect location for this year’s competition. Stephen Kenyon, NFU Welshpool group secretary, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting our 5th annual charity golf day in September. This year we have chosen Arscott Golf Club, just four miles west of Shrewsbury – an excellent 18 hole course. We’re encouraging teams of four to enter, so please gather friends, associates and work colleagues and join us for a fantastic, social day out – with a little competitive spirit too! We hope lots of enthusiastic golfers join us.”

Inspirational teacher nominated as ‘best’

S n Sarah Probert is honoured to have been

nominated as Best Teacher in the Dyslexia Awards

arah Probert, business lecturer at North Shropshire College (NSC), has been nominated for the Best Teacher Award at this year’s Dyslexia Awards. The award is for the teacher who has inspired and encouraged dyslexic students. The awards were founded by The Dyslexic Dyslexia Consultant (The DDC) and are being awarded for the first time this year. The awards recognise the contribution of dyslexics to life in Shropshire and those who support and inspire them. Sarah Probert says she was inspired to encourage dyslexic students because of her personal experiences from school. “When I was a teenager I met with my school’s careers adviser who informed me that it was probably best to lower my career expectations as I was unlikely to get a ‘proper or good’ job due to my lack of ability and skills. I decided to prove her wrong and I somehow got myself into college,” she remembers. It wasn’t until aged 18 that Sarah’s dyslexia was identified.

Sarah continues: “I had such an inspiring tutor, to whom I will always be grateful, he helped to get my dyslexia formally identified. When I received the results of the assessment, it felt like a massive weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Suddenly I understood why. “I love learning and I knew that despite what was said to me at school, I wasn’t stupid. From that moment on, I have been on a mission; dyslexia is not a barrier to learning it just means I learn in a different way. I never want any young person to feel excluded from learning because they think and learn in a different way. What makes us who we are should always be celebrated and everyone has the right to be successful.” Sarah added: “To be nominated for the Best Teacher Award means such a great deal to me both personally and professionally. I am proud to work at North Shropshire College and I hope that in some small way my success may help encourage others out there who might doubt their own abilities, you can do it! Thank you to those of you who have nominated me. Nominations are open at www.theddc.org.uk/ dyslexiaawards

Business consultant visits USA for latest solutions It is always useful to add tools to your business skills toolkit, says Oswestrybased coach and trainer Heather Noble, and that’s exactly what she’s done. Having recently attended a course in the USA, Heather – of training consultancy Salt Solutions – is now a Certified Practitioner of Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) I & II. The MBTI assessment tool is a questionnaire used to identify personal preferences centred around basic mental processes and relates to information gathering, decision making and the way in which we interact with the world. Heather said: “I have been looking for some time to find a straightforward,

robust and versatile tool which can be used to enhance my offering to businesses. I am particularly interested in helping to establish and develop teams, setting up leadership and management programmes and developing effective communication strategies.” She added: “The MBTI assessment is simple to do and is invaluable for business and personal growth.“ The MBTI instrument can be used in companies of all sizes and with analysis of findings can inform key business decisions with regard to business growth, business consolidation and business image. www.salt-solutions.co.uk

A: A Grant of Probate is a legal document which confirms that a person is entitled to administer the estate of someone who has passed away. It is issued by a division of the court called the probate registry and will be needed in order to deal with some assets of your mother’s estate. Some assets within your mother’s estate may be closed with just a death certificate, for example her bank and savings accounts, if the balance isn’t too high. However, you will need a Grant of Probate to give you the authority to deal with other assets such as a house. In order to obtain a Grant of Probate you will need to gather valuations of all of your mother’s assets and liabilities. You then need to complete an Inheritance Tax return to confirm whether or not Inheritance Tax is payable on the estate. Her estate will have a £325,000 tax free allowance, with other exemptions available too if necessary. Once you have completed the Inheritance Tax return and paid any Inheritance Tax owed, you will then need to swear an oath to confirm you are the person entitled to deal with the estate. The application can then be submitted to the probate registry who will issue the Grant of Probate shortly afterwards. If you require any help and assistance at any point with obtaining the Grant of Probate, you can consult with a solicitor who can support you through the process. Language of success for Lowri The proprietor of the Welsh Shop has been named as runner-up in UK’s Freelancer of the Year awards. Lowri Roberts, from Oswestry, is best known in the town as market trader at the indoor market at Bailey Head. But when she’s not selling she also runs a successful translation business. The awards are hosted by IPSE, the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed and QA, one of the largest learning services organisations in the UK. IPSE presented Lowri with £2,500 for her business and a whole host of prizes. The awards recognise excellence in freelancing, and applicants were judged on the strength of their portfolio and their passion and commitment to freelancing. Lowri said she was honoured to receive such an accolade. “I’m so overwhelmed, pleased and honoured to be awarded runner-up this year,” she said.

“The competition was high, and I stood next to so many amazing and talented freelancers on that stage. I’m truly grateful for being recognised at a national awards, and hope to continue to further my Welsh language business with the awards money and training.” Lowri’s business, Trosi Tanat Translation, provides Welsh translation services to a wide range of clients. Her services include written translation, interpretation, and translation training. Lowri, who comes from a family of freelancers, uses her skills to positively influence the use and direction of the Welsh language. Oswestry markets manager David Clough said the win was thoroughly deserved. “Lowri has been a market trader, running the only Welsh shop in England, in Oswestry Market, since 2010 and there is a real synergy between both her translation business and shop. We are delighted that she has won recognition for her work,” he said.

Simla charity night raises £2,100 An Oswestry restaurant raised more than £2,000 for Hope House hospice during its 40th anniversary celebrations. Simla Tandoori Restaurant in Beatrice Street, held two charity nights to celebrate four decades in business. The fundraising evenings, comprising traditional food and entertainment, were a great success Restaurant owners George Miah and his wife Julie visited the hospice to present the charity with a cheque for £2,100 to represent Hope House’s 21st birthday.

An antique bed business, which has been family run since 1971, has won the coveted Welsh Family Business of the Year 2016 award. Business owners Tracy and Tony Butler of Seventh Heaven, in Chirk Mill, near Wrexham, were delighted to be presented with the award, Tracy and Tony Butler were organised by magazine and resource delighted to win a family business award for Seventh Heaven centre Family Business United. Seventh Heaven has become renowned nationally and internationally for fine antique beds, quality mattresses, bed linen and bedding. However, the company, originally run by Jerry and Meryl Butler, started life from far more humble beginnings as a market stall selling bric-a-brac at weekends in London. Now based on the Shropshire-Welsh border, Seventh Heaven remains in the family and is run by their son Tony and his wife Tracy. The business has pulled through some rough times, and a relaunch in 2008 as Divine Dreams, but is now going from strength to strength with Tracy and Tony at the helm. The pair have put everything they have into the business to make it a success, and have returned to the original name of Seventh Heaven. “With the country in deep recession and demand for antique beds at an all time low, times were hard, especially when trying to balance raising a family of four children with working seven days a week. Gradually the business picked up, helped in no small part by the loyalty of 40 years of customers of Seventh Heaven and a dedicated team of staff.”

COMPETITIONS

WIN TICKETS TO SHROPSHIRE STEAM RALLY

T

he County of Salop Steam Engine Society’s 2016 Rally, taking place at Onslow Park, Shrewsbury over the August Bank Holiday – Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August – will be celebrating 2016 with a ‘Year of the Horse’. Society chairman Edward Goddard said: “We have received many positive comments over the years about the wonderful horses at the Rally, so this year we are creating a special celebration that will delight visitors – with the focus on horses and their related transport (carts and waggons) as we realise they are one of the most popular attractions!” Shrewsbury Steam Rally will showcase over 1,000 exciting exhibits and the diverse range of attractions will include the wonderful spectacle of working steam engines, and beautifully preserved classic vehicles from yesteryear, all to delight visitors to the highly-popular annual event. In the main arena, spectators can enjoy moving convoys of historic commercial vehicles, including buses and fire engines; vintage cycles; working horses; vintage tractors; pre-and post World War II cars; classic motorcycles; and perambulators – with all entrants invited to dress in period costume. The Working Field will take a nostalgic look at the farming of ‘days gone by’ and demonstrate an exciting mix of impressive working machines and shire horses that capture the history and heritage of farming in the Victorian era. The Rally covers 45 acres of beautiful parkland, with six acres of trade stands. It hosts a variety of preserved commercial vehicles including lorries, buses, fire engines and a large display of military vehicles. The Olde Time Fair offers lots of fun, with steam-powered rides for all, accompanied by vintage fairground music. Spectators can enjoy the annual interactive display of birds of prey.

f you are looking for an action-packed day out with the kids full of fun, excitement and adventure, then Park Hall Countryside Experience is the place to visit. Situated on the outskirts of Oswestry it’s a perfect day out for all the family. Come rain or shine there’s always something to do. Down on the farm there’s lots of close contact with farmyard friends. Feed the goats and lambs, groom ponies, cuddle rabbits, hand milk a real cow, or lead the heavy horses around the stableyard. But that’s not all…. Pig Racing is THE event not to be missed. The excitement is electrifying as the tension mounts at the starting gate. Of course only one pig will sprint to victory, could it be yours? It’s hilarious and happens twice a day. Summer activities on the farm see the return of the ever popular Maize Maze; its numerous pathways and dead ends will keep the kids occupied for quite a while. You will never have so much fun getting lost! The all-new adventure playground in the woodland is on your route to the maze, so give that a go too. Explore the brilliant Science Illusion Zone, an interactive science exhibition guaranteed to entertain all ages. Climb inside the giant kaleidoscope, peer into the depths of the amazing infinity mirror or see your shadow frozen in time on the fantastic shadow wall! Don’t miss out on the indoor action, there are two massive play barns at the farm, two giant slides, two bouncy castles, the list goes on and on… so much is under cover. And outdoors there are great adventure courses and play activity sites. What’s ‘wheelie’ fun are the numerous driving activities: the electric cars, the kids 4x4 Land Rover course, the pedal go-karts and the Barrel Train ride. Don’t forget the tractor ride which operates throughout the day, it’s entirely free and lets you see more of the farm. But if you want to chill out from the action then take time to browse around and visit the Welsh Guards collection, the World War I trenches, the Victorian school or the Iron Age roundhouse; a superb learning experience for children and adults. There are excellent café facilities on site with great value-for-money meals and snacks; or if you prefer to bring your own food, picnic areas are also available. So put Park Hall on your list of things to do this summer, meet your friends, make it a family day out; there’s one thing you can be sure of – there’s always a warm welcome guaranteed at this national award-winning farm attraction. Visit www.parkhallfarm.co.uk or telephone 01691 671123. We have teamed up with Park Hall Countryside Experience to offer three readers a family day ticket each, which can be used any time with the next 12 months. To win simply answer the following question: What animals race twice a day at Park Hall Countryside Experience?

ELEMENTARY, DEAR WATSON

Moving moments

L

Eluned Watson ying in bed, tossing and turning, listening to the loud snoring grunts next to me and random mutterings from the adjoining room, I have started experiencing a waking nightmare. For some reason, despite feeling shattered, I am struggling to get to sleep. I cannot understand why I’m still awake. I refuse to open my eyes and lie there, but still I can’t reach the land of nod. This is a situation that I’m simply not used to. If snoozing were an Olympic sport then usually I’d be up there waving the Union Jack along with Rip Van Winkle and Sleeping Beauty. In the BC (before children) years, I could happily lie-in past lunchtime and even now I’m sure I could cheerfully spend a morning in bed if I were ever given half a chance. Sleep has never been problem. It’s been a gift I just took for granted. You lie there, you think a bit, your thoughts get more random, then before you know it, you’re dreaming. Easy! So why, have I suddenly started lying there listening to the dawn chorus? Well, it doesn’t take a psychologist to work it out. I’m unsettled. The UK is going

through a turbulent time; Britain will be leaving the EU, party leaders have been resigning left, right and centre, we have a new prime minister and sport has been turned on its head with Wales making it through to the Euro 2016 semi finals. But my teeth grinding, random tears and general feeling of discombobulation comes from much closer to home. We’ve just moved house which although very exciting is, apparently more stressful than having a baby, changing job or dealing with elderly relatives.

I’ve not only discovered where my local rubbish tip is, I’m now a regular there and have perfected reversing into my ideal space (mixed recyclables)

In a recent Which? poll, seven out of 10 respondents said that selling or buying their property was stressful, compared with only around half who said the same about having a baby or changing jobs. Only bereavement and divorce came higher in the stress stakes. I wouldn’t have believed that shifting to another home could be that disturbing, especially if (like me) you’re only moving around the corner to a home that you fell in love with and wanted to own. I should be walking on air. But the whole process, from selling, buying and moving has been the best of times

but also the worst of times. Dealing with solicitors and paperwork for weeks on end, fears the deal could collapse at any moment and constantly chasing estate agents for updates was aggravating. Sorting through box after box brimming with a decade’s worth of general tat that filled attic, cupboards and drawers has been never-ending (not helped by having a husband and children who want to keep absolutely everything, however grubby, broken and useless). I’ve not only discovered where my local rubbish tip is, I’m now a regular there and have perfected reversing into my ideal space (mixed recyclables). Now that the sale has all gone through, we’ve faced packing and unpacking all our belongings. Last minute as always, I emptied wardrobes and drawers while removal men got stuck trying to fit down our narrow road. I was even scrubbing the oven between making them cups of tea. One week later, we’ve still not found my computer mouse, although it could well be in the unemptied box marked ‘office junk’ (my husband’s packing contribution); I can’t find my makeup bag (apologies to everyone); and we’re yet to eat a meal that isn’t takeaway or pasta. But, on the positive side, I’ve got a lovely new house where everyone has their own bedroom and there’s plenty of room for a summer housewarming party. Better still, people keep arriving with bottles of bubbly. We’ve not eaten properly for a week but the wine rack will have never looked so healthy (or it will, as soon as I track it down – I wonder if it disappeared on an over-zealous trip to the tip). Hopefully, it won’t be long before I’m sleeping for England again. email: ewatson@reviewmedia.com
