S
ummer is well and truly here and we’re celebrating in style and feeling sunny – whatever the actual weather forecast says.
We’ve got recipes bursting with seasonal
berries, summer fashion fit for sizzling
temperatures and Six of the Best buys for a
summer of fun. Our events pages are crammed full of fun things to do throughout Shropshire but don’t forget the great choice
of fetes and festivals right on your doorstep, including the free Oswestry Food Festival.
We meet local boy and new Oswestry Mayor, Councillor
Paul Milner, to talk about his plans for the following 12 months in office. And find out about the town’s new monthly Artisan Market, packed with arts, crafts and culinary delights.
English meets Welsh at Powys Eisteddfod this month, when
music and arts from across the border congregate in Oswestry,
a town which still has a rich and vibrant Welsh tradition. We also chat to fundraiser Enid Thomas, a former Marie Curie nurse and a key member of Oswestry Welsh Club.
Whether you’re reading Shropshire Review in your
deckchair or while waiting undercover for the showers to ease off, we hope to add a little ray of sunshine to your day.

This month sees the launch of Oswestry’s brand new Artisan Market, offering locally produced hand-made food and crafts. The market, which replaces the Farmer’s Market, will run on the last Friday of every month and will see up to 10 artisan stalls pitching up in Bailey Street. Markets manager David Clough hopes the market will attract more shoppers into the town centre and market at Bailey Head. The artisan market will run from 9am until 3pm starting on 24 June and running until Christmas. If the event proves a success, the market will become a regular monthly feature.
The move comes as Oswestry Town Council takes on more control of streets for events and markets from Shropshire Council. “We have been able to take more ownership of the streets for events and markets purposes and are looking forward to making the most of the added flexibility with less red tape,” said David Clough. “It’s been quite a big deal rebranding and making changes to something as traditional as the market, but traders have been supportive. “The market will carry on up until Christmas and if successful will become a regular feature that could end up extending towards Bailey Head or into Cross Street.”

TV chef, Mark Lloyd, star of the BBC Good Food Show, visited The Marches School, in Oswestry offering tasty tips. Mark spoke to the students about his life and the challenges he has faced growing up. Out of the group of 40 students, 18 have been given the opportunity to work under Mark’s guidance to plan, prepare, cook and run a one-day popup restaurant at the school on Saturday 9 July.
Mark Lloyd said: “I think it is extremely important to show young people that we believe in them and give them opportunities to find out just what they can achieve outside of the classroom. “All the skills used in kitchens can be applied to many different aspects of life outside of the restaurant. The students will need to be organised, utilise leadership skills, use their intelligence, and work together as a team to deliver on time and under pressure.”

COMMUNITY NEWS
Mayor Paul is proud to serve home town He’s modest and grateful to be Oswestry’s new mayor but Cllr Paul Milner still wants to be known just as ‘Paul’. The 44-year-old former Fitzalan Secondary School pupil confesses that back in his school days, he and his friends could never have imagined that one day he would become town mayor. But the born-and-bred local lad feels a passion for Oswestry that saw him run for councillor back in 2010. “I really did it because I wanted the best for Oswestry. I wanted to save the bowling green and help the community,” he says. Since then he has become a well-known face around town at countless charity, school and business events. “I think most people around here know me or my family,” says Paul. “I am very proud to be a local lad being born at the Oswestry & District Hospital in 1971 and to have lived in Oswestry all my life. I feel incredibly fortunate to be elected by all my fellow councillors to the position of mayor of my hometown.” Those who don’t know him directly often know his parents or grandparent. His parents David and Pam Milner owned a family-run electrical business in Oswald Road for over 35 years; his grandfather worked on the railway as well as being a volunteer for the Oswestry Auxiliary Fire Service during the war; while his grandmother had a sweet stall in the market for many years. Paul has become one of the town’s youngest mayors and is starting to settle into the role. “I did not dream that one day I would be mayor of this town; a place and a community that I have been so proud to be a part of for all my life,” he says. Paul’s partner Mandy Whittaker takes her place at his side as Mayoress. “This contract will really test our relationship,” he smiles. “I’m looking forward to her support, patience and tolerance over the coming 12 months.”
Food for thought Chalk CIC, in Oswestry, receives surplus food every Wednesday to give away to people and families in need. Local supermarkets, including Marks and Spencer and Morrisons, provide food which is bagged and provided to people who need it. If you or anyone you know would like a weekly bag of food please let Chalk know. Telephone Chalk on 01691 655895.

As mayor, Paul will be particularly supporting Oswestry Stroke Club, Hope House Children’s Hospice and Disabled Sports for Children. But a big personal mission and commitment is to keep local health services local. He carries on his petition to keep emergency services in Oswestry and has so far received more than 2,000 signatures. “It is vital services are kept local and importantly access to Accident & Emergency is not transferred to remote locations,” he says. Having been a councillor for six years, and worked as deputy mayor last year, Paul knows what’s in store for him and the council. He acknowledges that the next 12 months will be difficult for the local council due to financial constraints and pressures from Shropshire Council but he is ready to stand up and be heard on behalf of Oswestry. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be elected as the mayor of my home town. I reaffirm my commitment to undertake the role of mayor to the best of my ability. I am sure that we can continue to build on the many successes of the council and face together the challenges coming at us, doing at all times, what is best for the town of Oswestry.”
Silver award, especially for you A Slimming World consultant from Oswestry has won an award and met Australian soap star Jason Donovan after helping more than 100 people in the area to lose weight. Claire Morris who runs the Cabin Lane Slimming World groups every Monday and Saturday, was awarded ‘Silver’ status because of her success in supporting 100 members in her new Saturday group to reach their dream weight and improve their health. Claire was delighted to meet Jason Donovan, at the Slimming World Awards. She said: “I was so excited to get to meet someone that I’d watched on the TV every day for years. He did an impromptu show for us and sang all his well-known songs. What a night and one that I’ll always remember.”

On Thursday 7 July, Rachael Birchall from Home Instead will talk about caring for a loved one with dementia. On Tuesday 19 July, archives officer Marie Carter is ‘On the trail of Agnes Hunt’, founder of Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. ith six sons between them, Jane Rushworth and Louise Jenkins know a thing or two about pregnancy, birth and babies. But it wasn’t always like that. The pair, like most parents, had no idea what they were embarking on when they were carrying their first children. Ante-natal classes by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) were their lifeline, providing valuable information but most importantly, vital support from other parents in a similar position. Seventeen years on, and Louise, from Sharwardine, says she still meets up with her old NCT group a couple of times a year to compare parenting notes. For Jane and Louise, life changed forever when their children were born, including being the catalyst for a career change. Since becoming parents, the duo have retrained and now run independent antenatal classes Bump.Birth. EISTEDDFOD
Welsh tradition visits England
T
he Powys Eisteddfod is looking forward to a successful two-day return to Oswestry this summer, more than 100 years since it began. Taking over Oswestry’s Park Hall showground from Friday 15 July, the event is a celebration of Welsh traditions and heritage giving opportunities to people of all ages to perform and compete through music, poetry, dance and arts and crafts and attracting competitors from all over Wales. Originally part of Old Powys, Oswestry has a proud and vibrant Welsh tradition and maintains its cultural association with Wales. In fact, the Powys Eisteddfod has visited Oswestry on many occasions in the past including the 1930s in Cae Glas Park and 1987 at Park Hall. This year is the first time the Powys Eisteddfod has returned to Oswestry since 2002. While celebrating Welsh culture, history and tradition, and naturally conducted in Welsh, the music, dance and arts and crafts categories of the Eisteddfod are actually open to competitors in any language. Included are all the traditional classes of cookery, crafts and textiles, floral art, art, photography and design and technology. To help the non-Welsh speakers, an edited version of the Arts & Crafts schedule is now available in both English and Welsh and has been distributed to some of the local primary schools with an invitation for the pupils to enter. This version can be downloaded from http://bit.ly/ PowysEisteddfod2016Edit and includes an application form.

Members of The Rotary Club of Oswestry are pleased to have been involved with this event as, through the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund administered by the club, the Powys Eisteddfod has received a grant of £2,500 to fund the prizes for the choral and arts and crafts competitions. This is an exciting venture for the club, says member Hazel Yates. “The club supported both the Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant Eisteddfod in 2011 and the Oswestry Eisteddfod in 2002, and is appropriate as Mary Hignett, whose bequest enabled the grant, was most fond of the area being a founder member of both the Montgomeryshire Field Society and the Border Field Club and a teacher at Welshpool High School,” she said. Enid Thomas, of Oswestry Welsh Club, says that Oswestry has a vibrant Welsh tradition, but hopes that the Eisteddfod has appeal for everyone: “I think it’s important for people to know that you certainly don’t have to be Welsh to enjoy it.”
Spotlight on fundraising Enid Former Marie Curie nurse and fundraising queen Enid Thomas, from Oswestry, received the surprise of her life last year, when she was honoured at the National Eisteddfod. Enid, who is a member of Oswestry Welsh Club, was honoured last August at the Eisteddfod in Meifod, for her contribution to Welsh culture and fundraising efforts. She attended the ceremony alongside One Show presenter Alex Jones and former Welsh rugby player Robin McBryde. Enid was a Marie Curie nurse for 15 years and a community nurse focusing on palliative care for 35 years and has raised more than £40,000 for Marie Curie and more recently for Severn
Hospice. She has made a great contribution to Welsh life in the Marches town over the years and has been a key member of the Oswestry Welsh Club for more than 30 years. However, receiving a prestigious ‘blue gown’ was still a surprise. “It was a huge shock,” she remembers. “Gareth, my husband, knew about it, but wasn’t allowed to tell me. He was approached and asked did he think I would accept the honour? He didn’t say a word to me. When the letter came through the post marked ‘confidential’ I had no idea what it could be, I thought someone was suing me,” she laughs. “I couldn’t believe it. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. There were 20,000 people there and quite a crowd from Oswestry.”
n Enid (right) receives a raffle prize for her charity fundraising concert from British Ironwork Centre
Enid is very proud of her Welsh background and has organized a fundraising concert to raise money for Severn Hospice. It is being held in October at Wynnstay Hotel and will see performances from local classical and operatic performers. All available tickets have been sold.

WREXHAM CAR REPAIRER CELEBRATES AFTER WINNING MAJOR AWARD – A YEAR AFTER OPENING ITS DOORS FOR BUSINESS A Wrexham car repairer has been rewarded for its speed and efficiency with a national award – almost exactly a year to the day since it first opened for business. Fix Auto Wrexham, based on the Wrexham Industrial Estate, became the toast of the industry when it was named as the winner of the coveted Fix Auto Cycle Time Performance Award (which is based on 2015 performance metrics including cycle time, cycle time frequency, key-tokey time and hours worked per day) in front of almost 1,000 guests at a prestigious industry awards ceremony in London. Managing Director Lee Hitch, along with his bodyshop director Richard Edwards and bodyshop manager Shane Price, were presented with their award by TV presenter Zoe Ball during the British Bodyshop Awards held at the prestigious Battersea Evolution venue, in London’s Battersea Park.
Shortly after being presented with the award Lee, said: “When we first tabled the notion of opening a new site in Wrexham, we did so with the idea of creating a purpose built centre to enable us to repair vehicles, as quickly and efficiently as possible. To receive an award which recognises just that, just a year on from completing our first repair, is an incredible achievement and crowns off what has been a phenomenal year for our business. Lee, who also manages his company’s parent site Fix Auto Oswestry in Llanymynech, added: “Standing on stage in front of so many friends, colleagues and peers from throughout the industry was overwhelming. But it would not have been made possible without the teams from both Fix Auto Wrexham and Fix Auto Oswestry. I just wish everyone involved could have been there alongside us as this award is for each and every one of them.”

Building for the future An Oswestry school is getting closer to its dream of owning three `Eden Project style’ classrooms, thanks to the involvement of environmentallyfriendly house builder Tesni Homes. Tesni Homes is donating cash and advice, as well as pledging ongoing support, towards The Marches School’s fundraising appeal for the transparent geo-domes, which will see the space-age structures used as science and outdoor classrooms. To cement the relationship, staff and pupils dropped in to see Tesni’s brand-new view home at Glentworth Place, Morda, which is part of a six detached home development on the site of the town’s former ambulance station. Over recent months Tesni Homes, along with The Woodland Trust and Carbon Zero UK, has been working with the staff and 20-strong eco committee at The Marches School in support of the school’s vision to house the geo-domes which will be in three different sizes.
A Tesni home is where design expertise meets environmentally responsible building. Each home is EPC rate ‘A’ for lower bills and lower environmental impact. Spacious living areas are warmed by dual-fuel log-burning stoves set on a natural slate hearth; Velux sun pipes enhance natural light, and the heat recovery ventilation system lets in fresh air whilst retaining the heat. Beautifully designed open-plan kitchens have bi-fold doors leading on to the garden. To truly appreciate the outstanding features of a Tesni home, you’ll have to come and see for yourself.

FEATURE PROPERTY
Living in Bliss
n Above: Large gardens offer plenty of space to relax in peace n Left: Semi-detached Bliss Cottage is an attractive rural home n Below: Take in stunning views across the Welsh countryside
Bliss by name and bliss by nature, Bliss Cottage in the small rural community of Hendre, near Llanfyllin, is a charming, two-bedroom cottage in a stunning Welsh landscape. The semi-detached cottage has a terrace balcony, lounge with warming cast iron wood stove, separate dining room, kitchen and wet-room, but the stand-out feature that money can’t buy is the view across the great outdoors.
Along with large attractive gardens, paved patio, pond and rasied lawn, the property is set on the edge of Dyfnant Forest which includes miles of trails for walking, cycling and horse riding. There is a pretty riverside walk from nearby Pont Llogel which is part of the Ann Griffiths Walk and Glyndwr’s Way. The surrounding area comprises of some of the finest countryside in Wales, just 10 minutes drive to the north is the
beautiful Lake Vyrnwy, set within a vast nature reserve managed by the RSPB. Other benefits at the property, which may be available by separate negotiation, include a wood fired hot tub, attractive insulated ‘Hobbit House’ with wood stove, large timber shed and timber potting shed. Bliss Cottage has an asking price of £175,000 through Morris Marshall & Poole estate agents, Oswestry.
‘Brexit or not Brexit, it will be business as usual’ Kate Howell, of Woodhead Sales and Lettings in the centre of Oswestry, is our ‘Secret Agent’, lifting the lid on the world of property. This month, Kate is thinking about the EU referendum . . . In or out, Brexit has been the subject of intense debate over the last six months and while you’re reading this the votes have been cast and the decision made, but at the time of writing there is major uncertainty about which way the vote will go. I predict whichever way it has gone that it’s business as usual in Oswestry. The referendum has been an unwelcome distraction as we impatiently await the result so that business life can resume. We’ve just come out of a recession – things are growing – wages are going up, rents are increasing and the face of Oswestry is about to change with multiple major developments planned. Those developers are already committed to
building in Oswestry, whatever the outcome of the referendum. Some scare-mongering regarding Brexit has focused on falling house prices. One of the great things about living in Oswestry is that our house prices don’t experience the highs and lows that some parts of the country do. The house prices here represent the pace of life; steady, and I predict it will stay that way, Brexit or no Brexit. We live in a growth area and property is a growth market. The infrastructure in Oswestry is ripe for development and demand for housing has never been higher. All these signs point to a positive outcome for the local property market, whatever the result. There are uncertainties about what will happen if we stay or leave the EU, but what I am certain about is that Oswestry’s property market will continue as it always has done, attracting people to the town for its reasonable pricing and steady pace of life.
n Whether we leave or stay in Europe, there
will be no effect on Oswestry’s property market says Secret Agent Kate Woodhead
I look forward to moving on from the referendum and enjoying all that the town has to offer this summer, in particular the food festival on the 9 and 10 of July, where we welcome in lots of visitors from outside of the town and showcase the best of Oswestry.

Hendre Meredith is truly a one off opportunity to create an exceptional place to live. All too often the phrase unique or one off is used to describe a conversion opportunity but you will not find another one like Hendre Meredith. One particular feature of the property will be the number of doors, windows and skylights, which will allow the interior to be flooded with natural light. Having obtained resolution to grant planning permission the vendors are now looking for someone who will do the conversion justice.

Naturally new beginnings
I
t’s been a long and winding career path that has led Chris Nichols to a career and county that makes him truly happy. Chris, who has always worked in design, began Shropshire-based Decking and Pergolas Ltd two years ago, finally making the decision to go it alone and leaving a multi-national company, in search of a better quality of life. “I have a wide ranging career path but have always been based around engineering and design,” says Chris. “My student days took me towards architecture but one thing led to another and I finished up working in building reclamation and heritage sites for West Midlands County Council. There, projects included work for the Black County Living Museum including moving an historic pub.” After a spell in the bullion industry in Birmingham, Chris ended up working in steel, as operations director for a petrochemical supplies business in Wolverhampton. After 20 years, as a director in charge of 200 staff, he decided it was time to resign and start a new challenge. “I hankered after change. I often didn’t see daylight from one day to the next as my office was located deep within the factory. A couple of years ago, life took another tun and I was presented with an opportunity to establish my

own business, designing and building garden decking and pergolas,” he remembers. He began in his hometown of Solihull but has now set up in Shropshire, moving to Telford. “I spent a great many years up and down the country’s motorways and thought it would be good to get away from urban life and find solace in the countryside. “I’ve always had love of all things natural and this is a good place to be both as a business opportunity and for my new beginning,” he says.
Using his architectural design skills, Chris is transforming gardens across Shropshire. “I don’t just build decking and pergolas, I collaborate with clients to provide an individually designed, life-enhancing experience which can be enjoyed for years to come.” Chris’s only regret is that he didn’t start his business sooner. “It is so rewarding seeing a project through from the beginning to the very end. “Some simple decking can transform a garden, particularly a sloping garden. I can give customers a whole new outdoor space to entertain, or create a safe children’s play area. “It doesn’t have to be one vast area of decking, we can break it up with perforated strips, a pond, or a pergola to create something practical yet beautiful. “The first job I did confirmed I’d made the right decision. The couple said that since I’d redesigned their garden, they had completely moved their summer dining outdoors and were enjoying a whole new lease of life with friends. “Seeing the joy in people’s face when they see the finished project is so rewarding. This business bring me a huge amount of pleasure. “It has been life changing for me, and can be life changing for customers.” www.diggersdeckingandpergolas.com or telephone 07739 546167
Worktops fit for a celebrity home It’s not just television makeover shows that can transform a kitchen or bathroom in less than a day, says the owner of a Shropshire home improvements franchise. Richard Williams, who runs Granite Transformations in Shrewsbury, says that the company is a favourite with TV makeover programmes and celebrities. Their worktops, tiles and flooring have featured on many shows including Sarah Beeny’s Restoration Nightmare and 60 Minute Makeover with Peter Andre. “As well as producing a quality finish, our quick and simple fitting process offers huge appeal for homeowners,” says Richard. “Granite Transformations specialises in fitting materials on top of existing worktops, so you don’t have to rip your kitchen or bathroom apart. “The sheets are less than 7mm thick and made from 95% natural stone or recycled materials and 5% resin, so they are strong, lightweight and can be fitted directly on top of existing worktops that are starting to look a bit worn, tired or unfashionable.” “It’s the high performance polyester resin that’s the key,” says Richard. “Because it is tough
and light, it can be used as flooring planks and tiles, again fitted over existing floorcoverings,” he says. No wonder they have so many famous faces using their products! TV chef Rosemary Shrager has opted for the company’s kitchen worktops, tiled areas and floors for her cookery school in Kent; TV designer Linda Barker has had her reclaimed slate surfaces refaced with their work surfaces; and racing driver Sir Stirling Moss chose the business’s hand-crafted glass mosaic tiles for his Mayfair home. Property developer Sarah Beeny has used Granite Transformations products to help kit-out some of the 97 rooms of her historic mansion, Rise Hall in East Yorkshire, which starred in the Beeny’s Restoration Nightmare TV series. Yet the business isn’t just for celebrities. Homes across Shropshire have experienced the A-list treatment transforming kitchens and bathroom work surfaces, with minimum hassle and mess. In fact, the global brand fitted its one millionth worktop last year. The business, which began in Australia 20 years ago, has been busy, says Shrewsbury

franchisee Richard. It started trading in the UK 15 years ago and was launched at Shrewsbury’s Battlefield Enterprise Park at the end of last year. “The whole process is quick and easy, with many makeovers completed in just one day, which makes it perfect for the 60 Minute Makeover format and also for Shropshire homeowners,” says Richard. For further information go to www. granitetransformations.com. Visit the Shrewsbury showroom at Battlefield Enterprise Park or their display at Dobbies garden centre, off the A5. DOWN TO EARTH
Each month the team at Meadowdale Nurseries in Telford will be offering you lots of handy tips and advice on how to make the best of your garden
The family-run nurseries, which is now run by brothers John and Rob Anderson, have been growing plants for the last 27 years.
July tips for the garden I do hope that as you read this the sun is shining and you are enjoying summer in your garden. As with June it is important to keep watering, once or twice a week should be sufficient. Drench pots well and water around the base of shrubs avoiding contact with foliage. Hanging baskets may need watering twice a day (I do this all the time throughout the season), especially if it is very hot or windy, remembering to feed once a week and dead head them to prolong long lasting flowering that will last until the first frost. During the dry spells ensure shrubs such as camellias, azaleas and rhododendron get regular watering as they produce the buds for next year now – if they become too dry this will prevent flowering. A big tip to remember is that even if it rains, it will not get in your containers or baskets as the plants act as an umbrella diverting rainwater away from the soil beneath. Encourage early flowering perennials to last longer by cutting them back to a shoot or leaf, give them a good feed and they will grow back to give you a second display of colour. Keep your wits about you, as you’ll need to be fighting fit for the war against aphids and caterpillars. Spray regularly with Bug Clear from Westland or Provado Bug Spray from Bayer, and pay particular attention to roses – aphids like to congregate around the buds and this prevents them from opening up into flower. If you don’t want to use conventional insecticides try using washing-up liquid diluted in water or Pye powder/spray for organic use. Better still grow plants to encourage hoverflies, lacewings and ladybirds, as they like to lunch on aphids. Keep your eye out for slugs and snails if it’s warm and it rains, they are sure to be out. Pick vegetables and fruits that are ripe or at their peak now, otherwise they can become bitter and woody. If you have too much, why not share them with friends and family or store/freeze for a later date? Pinch the tops off greenhouse tomatoes before they overtake your greenhouse and you can still plant out beetroot, carrots, runner beans and lettuce. Should the weather be particularly hot/dry cut the lawn on a high setting. Don’t panic if some of it has already gone brown, as soon as it rains it will revert back to green and grow back normally. Use a liquid feed to help condition it. Now is the time to relax and enjoy – get the BBQ out and show off your garden with pride. For further information please see our website www. meadowdale-nurseries.co.uk or why not visit us at our nurseries in Telford, where our staff will be happy to help you with any gardening questions you have.
n Chives have beautiful flowers as well as culinary uses
Grow your own herbs Create your own culinary herb garden with this advice from the Horticultural Trades Association
Try planting a selection of tasty herbs valued as much for their ornamental appeal as their flavour and your garden will look almost too good to eat! From sage to thyme, rosemary to clipped bay and flowering chives, combine herbs valued for their ornamental beauty to produce long-lasting displays as well as regular pickings for the kitchen. There are no hard and fast rules about creating herb gardens, but successful designs often define the space using brick pavers, dividing up the area with small paths to provide easy access for picking. Go for an informal mix or choose a formal pattern or cartwheel design. As a centrepiece plant a large, shrubby herb such as rosemary or sage, a formally clipped bay tree, or a potted herb arrangement. In small spaces herbs can be grown in pots, either planting them individually and grouping pots together into displays or creating bold combinations in larger containers. As many herbs have Mediterranean origins they relish a site in full sun where they can bake during summer. Soil must be free-draining too, as wet and waterlogged ground will lead to root damage, and for pots choose a free-draining loam-based compost.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) Mint varieties Chives – both regular onion flavoured and Garlic Chives Thyme (Thymus varieties)
Top tips for successful herb gardens Regular picking some herbs, like basil, encourages side shoots to form, keeping plants bushy and productive. Pick and dry the leaves of herbs like thyme, sage, bay and many others to store and use when cooking. Coriander has a habit of bolting or running to seed, but enjoy their flowers as they’ll encourage beneficial insects, like hoverflies, into your garden.

39 FOLK FESTIVAL
Remembering their roots
I
t all began humbly enough as one couple’s vision for a small folk festival in their old hometown of Bridgnorth. But somehow – 20 years on from its first incarnation – it’s grown into one of the UK’s top events of its kind. What started life as the Bridgnorth Folk Festival eventually became the Shrewsbury Folk Festival. And – whichever way you look at it – there is just so much more to this amazing event than meets the Irish bouzouki. For starters, purists may feel that the term ‘folk festival’ is something of a misnomer as the event regularly throws the spotlight on artists regarded as more pop and rock. This year, for example, the festival features a trio of charttoppers in the shape of Nick Lowe, Paul Carrack and Andy Fairweather-Low. They will join Grammy award winning American singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash – the daughter of country singer Johnny Cash, folk rock band The Levellers, Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band, singer-songwriter Tom Robinson, world music star Raghu Dixit and Show of Hands at the four-day event at the West Mid Showground, Shrewsbury, in August. The couple behind this extraordinary phenomenon – Alan and Sandra Surtees – founded the event in Bridgnorth in 1997 and it just grew and grew, moving firstly to The Quarry in Shrewsbury in 2006 and then to the larger West Mid Showground (its home ever since) in 2007. Sandra says: “Our idea back in 1997 was to create a festival that we wanted to go to and it’s been like a rolling stone ever since – growing and changing as we’ve gone along. But the basic premise has always remained the same. We plan and programme a festival that we would want to go. We book the names that people want to see like Kate Rusby and Oysterband and then add other artists from the roots and traditional music scene.”
The trick seems to be getting the mix right – creating a line-up that offers something for everyone. And this is where Alan comes in as chief programmer. It’s Alan who brings artists great and small to the festival – finding acts that will fill the big marquee and those that will offer a more intimate session in smaller tents. “We also like to introduce our audience n The main marquee, picture: Alan Cole; aerial view of the West Mid to bands they might Showground site, picture: Virtual Shropshire www.DroneRangers.co.uk not know like Molotov Jukebox, Nidi D’Arac or Barnstar,” explains Alan. families who come along because it’s their local “The irony is that we’re normally flat out during festival and there’s more than enough going on the festival weekend and miss out on seeing half to entertain every age range. the things we want to!” The festival also inspires an incredibly loyal Working from their home in Worthen, the following of people who return again and again couple are supported by a small team and a vast with more than 95% of ticket buyers having been network of dedicated volunteers. before. Move home means business For Nicki Grant, moving back to her beloved Shropshire to run a business she loves is a double cause for celebration. Nicki is the woman behind the county’s newest letting agency, Go Rent A Home. With seven years of experience in letting out property, she successfully launched her business in Kent around four years ago, and will now replicate it in her home county. “I grew up in Shrewsbury and moved down to Kent 18 years ago but never really settled. However with children growing up it was never the right time to move back. Then when they said ‘let’s go back to Shropshire’ I jumped at it, and we found a lovely little cottage in Barrow, near Broseley,” she says. After a varied career which has seen her work in everything from banking to the police and as a childminder, running a letting agency was never in the plan: “When my father died, my mother and I decided to invest the money in property. We bought a few, planning to renovate them and sell them on. It was at the time that the market really slumped so although we were able to buy at rock bottom, we found we couldn’t sell so started renting them out instead. We really enjoyed it so I decided to start a business.” Nicki went back to college to gain her NFOPP Level 3 qualification, meaning that she is a professional letting agent. She built her portfolio of properties in Kent up to 20 and the business will continue under a manager there. She has already bought properties in the Broseley and Much Wenlock
areas, and is now looking to extend the range across Shropshire by working with landlords here. “Although Go Rent A Home is internet based, I am a local letting agent,” she explains. “With fewer overheads I am able to keep costs down and I do pass that on. You also get a very personal service. It’s me that chooses the tenants as it’s me that will work with them, so I select them very carefully. By taking the extra effort to start with, rather than just accepting the first person who comes along, you can end up with 10 years of a better tenant. When you are looking after someone’s investment, which may be worth up to hundreds of thousands of pounds, you’ve got to be careful who you let that out to!” She is fully insured, which covers all clients’ money, and is a member of the Property Ombudsman scheme. With full credit checks and referencing, legal and safety advice and regular property checks, Nicki promises to look after landlords’ property as carefully as she would her own. Likewise, tenants can rest assured that there is a 24/7 emergency phone line, and all the essentials – smoke and CO2 alarms, fire extinguishers and blankets, and so on – are taken care of. TOP TIPS TO A SUCCESSFUL ‘FAKE’ TAN Choose the safe way to tan this summer. With these top tips from our fashion and beauty expert Robyn Moore, you can’t go wrong
‘Do It Yourself’ I discovered Bondi Sands tan last month when shopping for a tanning lotion. After living in Bondi, Sydney a few years ago I was drawn to it and excited to try the product. I chose the light/medium because I am naturally fair skinned. The tan developed within an hour and I was left with a flawless tan which I could only ever achieve after a couple of weeks sunbathing on Bondi beach. Bondi Sands tanning foam, available from Superdrug for £9.95
Step 4: Place the mitt on your hand and pump a generous amount of foam tan on to it. Step 5: Apply to the body using stroking motions. Step 6: Ensure everywhere is covered and leave to develop. Step 7: Wash off after full development time. Use a mild soap.
The Salon Spray Tan There are a range of spray tan brands which all develop slightly differently in tone, depth and smell. Sienna X professional tan has a range of different colours to suit your skin tone. The tan should last from five to seven days. When you book your spray tan, ask your beautician for pre-tan tips. Sienna X spray tans are available from Violet Sky Beauty, at Holland & Co, Bridgnorth, £17.
HOW TO DO IT: Step 1: Exfoliate your skin from head to toe the day before. Avoid using products which contain oils. Step 2: Wash your skin, ensure you are 100% dry and do not use deodorant. Step 3: Moisturise your skin focusing on areas prone to be dry, such as elbows and knees.
Step 4 tanning mitt, available from M&S, £3.50

FOOD FESTIVAL
n Oswestry’s Stonehouse Brewery has quenched thirsts at the festival since it launched, one year after the inaugural festival (image by Vanessa Fairfax-Woods)
Sample flavours of Oswestry
O
swestry Food Festival will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, with even more tasty treats including cider, beer, local sausages and
cupcakes aplenty. On 9-10 July, the 2016 festival hopes to bring in thousands of visitors from the town and further afield to enjoy the region’s finest fare, in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The weekend also benefits from activities in the town’s beautiful Cae Glas Park. On Saturday, there will be a Fun Day, organised by The New Saints football club and on Sunday Reggae in the Park brings sunny tunes to Oswestry. On both days, visitors can also sample local ales at Cambrian Beer Festival with CAMRA at Cambrian Heritage Railways’ Oswestry station. The festival and activities are all free, and organisers are hoping for some warm weather to provide the proverbial icing on the cake. However, come rain or shine, the famously relaxed and free foodie weekend promises something for everyone. “Last year the weather was glorious which helped bring record numbers to the town. A spot of sunshine would be most welcome again this year!” said festival director John Waine. “Last year we saw up to 9,000 people coming to the town from Chester, Wrexham, Lancashire and further afield. “It’s a wonderful event to encourage visitors into Oswestry to see the town at its very best.” John has seen the food and drink festival grow organically from when he first launched the event in 2006. With little idea of how it would be received, John started with 50 producers mostly from within 30 miles of Oswestry. The event has now grown
n Speciality breads from Swifts
to include more than 65 stalls at the two-day festival, although organisers still try to keep food and drink as local as possible. The weekend has now become one of the main events in the town’s summer calendar. As well as the customary cheese, bread, meat, pie, cakes and beer, more unusual producers cater for vegetarian and vegans as well as gluten-free. The festival which covers Cross Street, Bailey Street and New Street, takes a lot of organising, says John, director of Best of Oswestry, and is supported by Oswestry Town Council. But despite some seriously hard work getting it up and running, the festival retains the relaxed party atmosphere across the town all weekend. “It’s a relaxed festival with top quality regional food and drink but it’s not just for foodies. Every year, we enjoy offering something different – we’ve had opera singers and reggae in the park, sports activities with Welsh premier league champions The New Saints. It’s a celebration of all that’s great about the area,” says John. “It’s a weekend to interact with producers. We’ve seen some producers return year after
n Tasty treats at Oswestry Food Festival
year, many of whom have expanded vastly since the early days,” continues John. Stonehouse Brewery, from Weston, near Oswestry, has been at the Oswestry festival since starting up in 2007. Coopers Gourmet Sausage Rolls is another success story that started out at Oswestry in 2009 and has now gone on to source the likes of Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols. Oswestry Food & Drink Festival is a truly local event run by a small band of people who care passionately about promoting the town. John runs the show along with his wife Isabelle and chairman Yossi Gliksman, who runs award-winning Upstairs Downstairs cookshop and cook school. Festival power is brought to the event by Oswestry’s P&S Electrical Contractors. “Ten years ago we thought we’d give it a go,” explains John. “We have many talented producers in the region and it made sense to give them a platform to shout about their wares. “But just as importantly it’s about enjoying Oswestry. Our market town has so much to offer whatever your tastes.” www.oswestryfoodfestival.co.uk

Method
Strawberry Kilner Jar Salad
Serves: 4 as a snack or 2 as a light lunch Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes
The fresh black pepper and balsamic vinegar dressing complements the sweetness of the strawberries in this salad designed to be assembled and enjoyed straight from the jar.
Ingredients
Serves: 1 Preparation time: 10 minutes
Ingredients 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp olive oil 100g chickpeas rinsed and drained handful of rocket 250g strawberries, hulled and quartered 100g feta cubed 1 tbsp shredded mint juice of half a lemon salt and freshly ground black pepper
First pour the balsamic vinegar and olive oil into the jar, and season with a pinch of salt and a generous grind of black pepper. Shake the jar to mix ingredients. Then, beginning with the chickpeas, layer up the ingredients within the jar, finishing with the feta and mint. It is important not to have the salad leaves next to the dressing as the vinegar will cause the leaves to wilt. Squeeze the lemon over the top of the salad, and seal the jar. When ready to eat, shake the jar to coat the salad in the dressing and then enjoy straight from the jar. Store upright.
Strawberry Parma Ham and Parmesan Crostini
200g of quartered strawberries 8 slices of sourdough bread 8 slices of thinly cut Parma ham 100g of parmesan cheese shavings 1 tbsp of aged balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil a small handful of basil leaves black pepper to season
Method Firstly, hull and quarter the strawberries and set aside. Toast the sourdough bread and then place on a serving platter. Arrange the Parma ham on top of each slice of bread, top with some strawberries and then sprinkle with the parmesan shavings. Finally, drizzle with the balsamic vinegar and olive oil and sprinkle with the basil leaves and some freshly cracked black pepper.

Edd Kimber’s Blackberry and Goats Cheese Quiche Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 65 minutes
Ingredients Rosemary Pastry: 200g plain flour 1 /4 tsp sugar 1 tsp salt 1 sprig of rosemary, finely chopped 135g unsalted butter 4 tbsp ice cold water 1 large egg yolk Filling: 100g lardons, cooked until crisp 120g goat’s cheese, diced 80g blackberries 1 large handful of rocket 3 large eggs 60ml whole milk 200ml double cream Black pepper to season
Method To make the pastry place the flour, sugar, salt and rosemary into the bowl of a food processor and pulse to combine. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs, the odd bigger chunk of butter is fine. Add the water and pulse until the pastry forms a ball. Tip the pastry out and use your hands to gently bring together into a uniform dough. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for an hour before using. Roll the pastry on a lightly floured work surface until about 2-3mm thick. Use the pastry to line a loose bottomed tart tin, 9 inches in diameter, trimming off any excess. Refrigerate the tart case from an hour before baking. Line the chilled pastry base with a crumpled piece of parchment paper and fill with baking beans or rice and bake for 25 minutes at 180˚c (160˚c fan oven) before removing the parchment and beans and baking for a further 10-15 minutes or until the pastry is lightly golden. Remove from the oven and brush the pastry case with the egg yolk before baking for a minute or so to set the yolk (this helps create a strong barrier so you don’t get a soggy bottom). Start filling the pastry case by adding a layer of rocket and then sprinkle over the blackberries, goat’s cheese and bacon. In a bowl whisk together the eggs, milk and cream, seasoning with some black pepper. Carefully pour in the egg mixture and place the quiche on to a baking tray and place into the oven, baking for about 25 minutes at 180c (160c fan oven) or until the egg mixture is set and top is very lightly browned. Allow to cool to room temperature before serving.
When filling the quiche keep a few bits of bacon and rocket aside to sprinkle on top of the quiche after the egg mixture has been poured in.
Edd Kimber’s Blueberry Friands Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes
Ingredients 140g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 35g plain flour 100g ground almonds 125g icing sugar 4 large egg whites 1 /2 tsp almond extract 36 blueberries 6 tbsp flaked almonds
Method Lightly grease a 12-hole non-stick muffin pan and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180˚C (160˚C fan). Heat the butter in a small pan on a medium/ high heat until the butter foams and the milk solids turn a golden brown. Immediately remove from the heat and pour into a small bowl. In a large bowl mix together the flour, ground
almonds and sugar. Add the egg whites and almond extract and mix together until smooth. Pour in the butter and mix together until smooth and fully combined. Cover the mixture and refrigerate for an hour before baking. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared muffin pan and top with three blueberries per friand and scatter the flaked almonds around the edges. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes or until golden brown around the edges and a little paler in the middle. Allow to cool for a few minutes before turning out on to a wire rack to cool completely. Kept in a sealed container these little cakes will keep for up to three days.
Edd Kimber’s Raspberry and Pistachio Tarts Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes

25g cornflour 50g pistachio paste 600g fresh raspberries 25g chopped pistachios Sweet Pastry: 200g plain flour 20g ground almonds 40g icing sugar pinch of salt 125g unsalted butter 1 large egg yolk 1 tbsp ice cold water
Method To make the pistachio filling place the milk into a medium sized saucepan and bring to the boil. Meanwhile place the egg, yolks, sugar, cornflour and pistachio paste into a large bowl and whisk together to combine. When the milk is at temperature pour over the egg yolk mixture and immediately whisk together, to prevent the eggs from curdling. Pour the mixture back into the pan and over medium heat cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture is very thick. Scrape back into the bowl and press a sheet of cling film on to the surface and refrigerate until needed. To make the pastry place the flour, almonds, icing sugar and salt into a food processor and pulse to combine. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture
resembles bread crumbs. Add the egg yolk and the water and pulse until the mixture starts to form a ball (if the mixture is too dry add more water a tsp at a time). Tip the mixture out on to the work surface and use your hands to gently knead together into a uniform dough. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for an hour before using. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured work surface until about 2-3mm thick and cut out 6 rounds of pastry big enough to line 10cm wide tart tins. Use the pastry to line six 10cm loose bottomed tart tins, trimming off any excess. Place the tarts on to a baking tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until the pastry is chilled. Line each tart case with a piece of crumpled baking parchment and fill with baking beans or rice. Bake in an oven preheated to 180˚C (160˚C fan) for about 20 minutes then remove the parchment and the beans and bake for a further 5-10 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. To assemble the tarts fill each tart shell with a layer of the pistachio mixture, top with fresh raspberries and chopped pistachios, dusting with a little icing sugar if you fancy. The tarts are best served on the day they are assembled but the pastry can be made up to a week in advance and the custard up to three days in advance.

I’m John Gentle, superintendent pharmacist at The Pharmacy @ Caxton, and I’m delighted to announce our independent, family owned business has new owners. But we’re still independent and family owned. There isn’t any change to our business, it will keep running exactly as it is, but we now have the support and resources of a large family business called Day Lewis Pharmacy. Day Lewis owns both our pharmacy here in Oswald Road and the one in Old Chapel, Oswestry, as well as a pharmacy in Gobowen. They have a great understanding of our community. Our staff are all the same, our opening hours remain the same and our usual services continue as well. With Day Lewis’s backing, we hope to extend the range of services further in the future. So if you need some advice on a common ailment, need to pick up a prescription or need to buy some medical products then just pop in. We are still very much dedicated to our local area and remain committed to providing the best service we can. We still deliver prescriptions too! Our new commercial director Tim Harrington said: “We are delighted to acquire the pharmacy in Oswald Road. “Every member of staff will remain the same and the pharmacy will continue to be independently run as it is. “We intend to listen to customer feedback over the coming months and year to ensure we remain the local community pharmacy of choice. “Day Lewis prides itself on customer service and we look forward to continuing to provide the service that customers know and expect in Oswestry.” The Pharmacy @ Caxton is open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6pm and 8.30am to noon on a Saturday. For advice or more information call (01691) 653033.

Dedicated healthcare assistant Yvonne Hartley has been chosen as the first recipient of a new recognition award at Oswestry’s world-renowned orthopaedic hospital. Yvonne Hartley, who works in the outpatients department at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, received her Health Hero Award from chief executive Mark Brandreth. The monthly award gives staff the opportunity to highlight individuals or teams who go above and beyond the call of duty in supporting patients and colleagues. Yvonne was nominated by Gill Lawrence, who is a clinical specialist physiotherapist in the rheumatology team. “Yvonne consistently goes that extra mile with our rheumatology patients,” said Gill. “She is regularly raising money for the Oswestry Rheumatology Association, both inside and out of work. “She looks after our team and patients in clinic and always has a positive approach. I can always rely on Yvonne for support and I can think of no more deserving recipient of this award than her.”

Howzat for club refurbishment Cae Glas Cricket Club has finally found a home and, following a £200,000 refurbishment, hopes to continue to support sport and the community in Oswestry. The official opening of the venue takes place on Sunday 3 July. After its foundation in 1952, during its early years Cae Glas Cricket Club was nomadic, playing at various pitches around Oswestry. It wasn’t until 1976 that the Club settled at its current Gatacre playing fields and pavilion home. After nearly 40 years their tenancy on the site was only secured in 2015 when Shropshire Council and Fields in Trust granted them a 30-year lease to enable the club itself to raise the thousands of pounds necessary to bring the sound but run-down building back for both sporting and community use. The club secured funding from local and national organisations, and started work in October 2015. Cae Glas chairman Andy Griffiths is delighted with the refurbishments. He said: “The aim of the project is to improve and enhance facilities for local, grassroots sport clubs, community and special interest groups to provide an asset to the people of Oswestry and the surrounding area.
Janet Marsden and Andy Griffiths of Cae Glas Cricket Club thank Oswestry Rotary Club’s Hazel Yates and president Mike Griffiths for their support in creating a club for the community
“We are very grateful to the many local organisations who have given financial support.” With two teams in the Shropshire County League and a mid-week friendly team playing in the Shrewsbury & District Evening Cricket League this season, the club’s 45 playing members are enjoying the new changing rooms and social facilities at what, with views over the cricket
Midlands hockey call-up for Georgie Talented young hockey player 13-year-old Georgie Nicholas (left), from Packwood Haugh School in Ruyton XI Towns, has won a place in the Midlands regional hockey squad. Georgie has been playing in the Shropshire Under-14 side and was part of the team that represented the county in the recent Midlands tournament against Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire and other Midlands counties.
Street parade for triumphant teams Oswestry’s outstanding football success is to be celebrated on the streets in an open top bus parade on Saturday 25 June. Mayor of Oswestry, Cllr Paul Milner, has invited the town’s three football teams to take part in the event to mark their historic achievements. Oswestry has seen all three football teams in the town secure trebles during their respective campaigns. TNS, who play at Oswestry’s Park Hall Stadium, clinched a domestic treble for the second successive season in the JD FAW Welsh Cup Final. They also won the Word Cup and Dafabet Welsh Premier League title. Newly formed Oswestry Town FC secured the Mercian Regional Premier League title, the community club have also won the Commander Ethelstone Cup and were recently triumphant in the FA Mercian Premier League Cup. The New Saints Ladies picked up the Tom Farmer Shropshire Women’s Cup, the West Midlands Regional Premier Cup and the West Midlands Regional Premier League.

Go solo in style After 25 years in salons, an Oswestry hairdresser has decided to go it alone as a mobile hairdresser. Rachel Humphreys has set up Hair by Rachel, offering customers a salon experience in their own home. Mum Rachel is delighted to be running her own business after many years experience in busy salons. “At the age of 43, I felt the time was right for me to make the leap into the world of self-employment, and become a mobile hairdresser. Looking back, the idea was always in the back of my mind, but it has taken until now to surface,” she said. “I started my training and qualified at Hazel’s Salon, which is based in the The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, in Gobowen. After eight years I left to take on the exciting opportunity to help set up and manage, what turned out to be a very successful salon in Chirk. A few years later, after having my first child, and to fit in with family life, I moved to Way a Head in Oswestry, where I have been for 15 years. “Throughout, I have been lucky enough to have had the loyal and continued support of my many clients, and would like to convey my thanks to them all. “We all have busy lives, and I offer my clients the salon experience in their own home, at a time that suits them and their routine, and at very competitive prices. I am based in Oswestry , and will cover Oswestry and surrounding areas.” Appointments are available Tuesday – Friday, (Saturdays by appointment for wedding/occasion hair) for ladies, gentlemen and children. Telephone 07837 249244 to book an appointment.
n Plas Fynnon Medical Practice apprentice administrator Shannon Williams, Mayor of Shrewsbury Cllr Miles Kenny, senior administrator Jo Tindsley and practice manager Sue Evans
Top award for practice Shropshire training provider SBC Training recognised its hardworking students and apprentices during the annual awards ceremony which celebrated the outstanding quality of work and achievements delivered by students over the last year. Plas Fynnon Medical Practice, in Oswestry, stole the show by securing the Outstanding Employer Award having shown excellent commitment to their staff development and providing opportunities for them to progress in to permanent positions. Among well-deserved nominees were five representatives from the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital who had all gone above and beyond this year with the completion of further qualifications and an overall positive contribution to the work of the trust. Special guest for the evening was Mayor of Shrewsbury Cllr Miles Kenny who himself undertook an apprenticeship at the beginning of his career and spoke passionately about the importance of young people finding apprenticeship opportunities.

Does the new micro-chipping law apply to existing pets or just new ones? Q: We have had our dog since he was a puppy and he is now eleven years old. He never goes off the lead when he is out for a walk because he is blind. Do we really need to get him microchipped? Or does the requirement only apply to people getting dogs after the law changed? A: On 6th April 2016 it became compulsory for all owners of dogs over 8 weeks old in England, Scotland and Wales to have them micro-chipped. If after that date it should come to light that you have not had your dog micro-chipped you may be served with a notice to do so and you must comply within 21 days of the notice being served. If you fail to comply with the notice you may be liable to a fine of up to £500 and you may even face prosecution. The only way the owner of a dog over 8 weeks old can legally be exempt from micro-chipping is if a vet verifies the dog cannot be chipped due to health reasons. Also under the new regulations, if you change your address or contact telephone numbers and do not update your details on the national database, your dog will no longer be considered to be micro-chipped and enforcement can be taken and a notice served. So you must ensure your details are correct and up to date at all times. Even though your dog is getting on in years and is blind, there are still advantages in having him micro-chipped, aside from the legislation requirement. He could for example become separated from you whilst out for a walk, or on holiday, because you tripped, or fainted, and let go of his lead. If this happened and someone found him he could be reunited with you via the national database. This question has been answered by Emma Simoes, a Solicitor with GHP Legal. Stallholder Jan uses her loaf Producing freshly milled British flour and delicious home-made bread, The Grain Sheaf in Oswestry’s indoor market is proving popular with market shoppers. The market’s newest stall was launched by Jan Williams in May. Producing the UK’s first British and organic flours freshly milled while you wait, she also offers British grains and the first home grain mills for sale in the county. Besides supplying a healthy range of grains and pulses, she also makes flaked muesli, healthy snacks, prepared speciality bread and biscuit mixes for enthusiastic home bakers. Jan’s enthusiastic wealth of knowledge and her warm, friendly welcome is enticing interest as she will be seen regularly demonstrating bread making and baking from the indoor Oswestry stall. Living near Wrexham, Jan is a country girl at heart who for many years ‘lived off the land’ as she grew and ate her own vegetables, besides utilising and making every produce possible from her own beloved goats. She says: “I’ve been baking all my life, I learnt at my Mum’s knee, she was well known for her delicious baking, and she learnt from my Gran, a cook in an upmarket London hotel, and her German stepdad who ran the bakery. “As children we learnt to appreciate quality and flavour and enjoyed what was local, fresh and in-season. My appreciation of veg led me to wonder about wheat varieties and how they may alter the flavour and texture of the bread I had been making for years.” More information about The Grain Sheaf can be found at www.thegrainsheaf.co.uk/ wordpress/about. Toast to buying local Shropshire Review whole-heartedly backs the businesses that make Oswestry and the surrounding area a great place to visit, live, shop, eat and relax. To show support, each month we are profiling a business in town, giving an insight into the people behind our independent businesses and providing information about what they offer. Oswestry Chamber of Commerce has a very similar goal – to maximise all opportunities to promote and advance Oswestry and the surrounding districts. Chamber chair Neil Jenkins is founder of Twelve Green Bottles, which has a shop on Leg Street as well as having an online and wholesale business. As Chamber of Commerce chair he says: “I am keen to continue to grow our membership and to forge strong relationships with local communities in order to strengthen the business community of our town. We have so much to offer and if we work together I believe we can achieve great things in the coming year.” Twelve Green Bottles opened its doors in Leg Street, Oswestry, in October 2014, though began
DOWN ON THE FARM I have had something of a landmark moment in my professional life recently, becoming the managing partner at Lanyon Bowdler. It’s a great honour and I’m excited about what the future holds, but if I’m honest there’s a steep learning curve as I get to grips with the new role. Being managing partner brings a whole new raft of responsibilities, including looking after the firm’s staff – all 230 of them spread across Shropshire and Herefordshire – and whenever you take on a new role, it’s only natural to need some advice from others.
as an online shop earlier that year. It was the brainchild of Neil and his wife Mandy, and was a complete career change for the pair who had previously worked in wealth management and accountancy and spent time living in Spain. While living in Elche, the couple embraced the local culture and quickly grew their knowledge of the many family-owned vineyards in the region. “We were both fond of wine and used to entertain a lot and had to know about wine,” explains Neil. “When we were looking at running our own business, food or drink seemed the ideal choice. We thought about promoting Spanish food but eventually decided on wine.” With family living locally in Knockin Heath, the pair decided that Oswestry was a good central location to live and work. Mandy looks after the shop while Neil is involved more in the trade and wholesale. The pair host a popular wine club which holds tastings with food on the first Thursday of each month. www.twelvegreenbottleswine.co.uk
By Brian Evans, head of agriculture at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors
I am continuing as head of agriculture and am looking forward to carrying on working with clients in my role as a mediator but my working day has changed dramatically. That would be daunting but I’m fortunate to have a great team around me at Lanyon Bowdler who can help me with my new responsibilities. As diversification activities increase, farmers can quickly find themselves in charge of a rural business which may be unfamiliar to them. And farmers taking on new responsibilities and planning for the future of their farm can often feel that they have to do it without asking
for support or guidance, just taking it in their stride as they continue the demanding work of running a farm. My advice would be to get help at the earliest stage possible – whether that’s from a professional source, such as your friendly local lawyer(!), or just someone you know who has been in a similar position. The more advice you can get, the better, because while taking on new responsibilities is not easy, having the right support can help you embrace change, enjoy it and look forward to the future.

WIN FAMILY TICKETS TO OSWESTRY SHOW
T
his year’s Oswestry Show will take place at The Showground on the outskirts of the market town on Saturday 6 August. The annual show is a highlight in the local calendar; it was first established in 1817 and has since grown into one of the county’s leading one-day events. An exciting schedule has been arranged for the main ring including an impressive display from The White Helmets Royal Signals Motorcycle Team kindly sponsored by Hughes Bros, Oswestry. Old favourite Bobb Hogg with his sheepdogs and ducks makes a welcome return, and the Sir Watkins Williams Wynn Hunt will introduce their pack of Old English Foxhounds to younger members of the audience. To round up events local young farmers’ teams will present their version of Total Wipe Out. Many trade stands are situated around the showground, with separate sections for craft and food. Elsewhere on the field from as early as 8.30am visitors can enjoy watching the judging of horses, cattle, sheep, rare breeds and goats before heading off to see the popular sheep shearing competition. A variety of entertainment has been organised for the Village Green to include a programme filled with dance, magic and music. Other areas of interest are the small livestock building, horticultural marquee, Women’s Institute competitions, vintage car and motorcycle sections, Oswestry Model Engineering Society and Montgomeryshire Vintage Machinery Display. Oswestry Show promises to be a great day out. For details go to www.oswestryshow.co.uk We have two family tickets to give away. ELEMENTARY, DEAR WATSON
A step too far
A
Eluned Watson fter an hour of shimmying, gyrating and jumping up and down in front of the television to the likes of Katy Perry and Jessie J, I fear that my husband’s obsession has just gone too far. He hasn’t discovered a previously untapped desire to learn street dance or Zumba. No, it’s far worse than that – he has taken to wearing a pedometer. His company’s latest initiative is to challenge employees to walk more by putting them in teams to compete on how many steps they can achieve each day. They have each been given a pedometer and aim to walk the distance around the earth in 100 days between them. We are on Day 20 and I’m losing the will to live. He has an office-based job, one hour away from home by car, so arrives home at 7pm having done only 3,000 steps. This apparently isn’t anywhere near enough to grant his team a chance of victory. So, out he goes again to play football, tennis, cycle or run to achieve the magic 10,000 steps which has become the bare minimum he allows himself. The NHS estimate that 3,000 to 4,000 steps is about average but, in a competitive work
environment, nothing less than 10,000 steps (around five miles) will do. On his first pedometer day, when he reached 10,000 steps, he was devastated to find no fanfare, fireworks or even a little celebratory beep. My mum used to have a Weightwatchers pedometer which earned her an extra gin and tonic when she reached a certain number of steps. Now that’s an incentive I can understand. Since the Day 1 achievement, it’s got to the stage where anything less than 20,000 is unimpressive. In some ways, it’s been helpful.
He got out the Wii console and the Let’s Dance game and challenged me to a dance-off He is definitely walking more and thinking twice before driving to places within easy reach. He’s even looking for excuses to walk, so has been offering to do the shopping. But it’s gone too far. In the first week, he took himself on a seven-mile run. Having not jogged more than a mile in months, it was no surprise that he returned out of breath with blisters and chaffing in places unused to friction and unsuited to blisters and chaffing. He is playing tennis and fivea-side football and even swam 10 laps of the pool on a family swim last weekend (he didn’t wear the pedometer in the pool but apparently you can add it on later). He’s more active and is becoming far more friendly with the bathroom scales,
but basically, it’s taking all the fun out of sport and exercise. When he told my sister-in-law about his pedometer, she sighed; she had been through the same. “I die a little bit every time he mentions his pedometer,” she said of my husband’s brother. I felt her pain. It has become an obsession. He’s discovered that driving on the cat’s eyes on the road adds more steps if you’re sitting in the car, and that tennis adds more steps than jogging. Better still, if our fouryear-old gets hold of the pedometer she can add thousands just by whizzing around going about her normal business (although of course this is cheating and is not in any way condoned). The latest bid to step up the exercise was dancing. The children were in bed, it was too rainy for running, so he got out the Wii console and the Let’s Dance game and challenged me to a dance-off. The pair of us have very little rhythm or grace between us but were motivated – me by a determination not to be beaten by a 6ft oaf and he by dreams of more steps. “Just two more songs should do it. Shall we dance to Mika or Madness next?’ were two sentences that I never expected to hear him utter. But I went along with it and quite enjoyed jumping around the living room until he hit me on the elbow with the controller and gave me a dead arm. Of course, I still wasn’t allowed to stop as he was only on 9,567 steps. Even worse was that by the time he reached that magic 10,000 he had beaten me, and added another 30 steps with a gloating victory dance. The pedometer has to go but not before we’ve had a dance-off rematch. email: ewatson@reviewmedia.com
