Adventurer, author and filmmaker Matt Dickinson visited The Marches School, in Oswestry, to talk about his writing and his experiences to students. Matt talked to pupils about his books; how he originally started to write and his experiences of climbing mountains. He gave tips on how to be a writer, using real life experiences to craft exciting stories. Matt showed pictures and footage of his Everest adventures, including the moment that he stood on top of the peak itself. Students had the opportunity to write the beginning of a short story and then received his instant feedback. Joanne Towers, librarian at The Marches School, said: “It was great to have a real life adventurer and author come to the school and inspire our students at the beginning of their GCSE year.”
New life for Syrian families Five Syrian refugee families have been given the opportunity to start new lives, away from war and suffering, by the people of Oswestry. Jools Payne, of Oswestry Welcomes Refugees, told members of The Rotary Club of Oswestry how five Syrian refugee families have now arrived in Oswestry and have received huge support from the community. Jools said that they were now working at settling into their new lives having fled their old lives in Homs with only the clothes that they stood up in and a backpack each. Jools said: “Formerly a beautiful city, with a rich history and fabric, Homs became the ‘Capital of the Revolution’ in the Syrian Civil War with large anti-government demonstrations causing Homs to become a city destroyed by constant confrontations between protesting residents and the Syrian forces; sadly only part of a humanitarian tragedy on an epic scale, with 65 million people fleeing for their lives from the region.” The families had been identified by the UNHCR (United Nations Humanitarian Commission for Refugees) as being in great need, suffering great trauma and loss. The UNHCR works closely with the International Organisation for Migration and the Home Office who ensure that strict security assessments are carried out. The resettlement organisation Refugee Action, working with the Red Cross, linked up with Shropshire Council who agreed to house Syrian family refugees. Jools commented: “The people of Oswestry swung into action; ordinary people made pledges including offers of English lessons, art therapy, befriending etc. The police,

health and education services were informed and private landlords were sought to provide affordable homes – not social housing. As refugees, the families receive an initial 12 months’ funding, after which they should be self-sustaining, working or seeking jobs and learning to speak English.” Jools praised Oswestry’s CHALK CIC for sourcing and providing items like furniture, soft furnishings, household goods and electrical appliances. Asked why she had got involved with Oswestry Welcomes Refugees Jools described her experience in three words: ‘inspiring, humbling, rewarding.’

Oswestry resident Pip was victorious with her impressive assembly of vegan and gluten free bakes depicting ‘Oswestry through the Ages’. The judges, Yossi Gliksman and Margaret Edwards, were also full of praise for the two runners-up. They were Louise Taylor-Kennett from Oswestry with her cake ‘Son of Os’ dedicated to Wilfred Owen, and Alex Jamieson from Pant with her bake ‘The Old Market’. The bake-off was organised by the HOOOH Community Group working with award-winning Wrexham-based film producer, Joey Edwards of Filmage and associate Bethan Jones. COMMUNITY NEWS
Community is key for mayor who cares It’s been a busy six months in which he’s been struck by the support and community attitude of the people of Oswestry, says town mayor Cllr Paul Milner In his opening speech as mayor, Cllr Paul Milner promised to fight to keep emergency health care close to Oswestry. Back in May, he made a commitment to battle against plans to move Accident & Emergency services to Telford, a journey which could take 50-60 minutes from Oswestry and the borders, in other words, a matter of life and death. He began a petition urging the Clinical Commissioning Group in Shropshire to provide Oswestry with an Urgent Care Centre and to ensure that A&E service were based at Shrewsbury. The mayor is halfway through his time in office and has had an incredibly busy and varied six months; but he has kept his word and kept health services at the top of his priority list. His petition currently has more than 4,000 signatures. “My priority was to fight to retain emergency health facilities at Shrewsbury and make sure Oswestry is provided for, we are the second biggest town in the county after all,” he says. “I have spoken to many people who have said they would no longer be here if emergency care hadn’t been available at Shrewsbury.” Paul has relished his six months in office, getting behind the community and supporting those doing great things in the region. “There are many people in the town who put others’ care and needs before their own. It says a great deal about the people of Oswestry. “Oswestry has seen many well organised and popular events including Sealed Knot reenactment, Oswestry Food Festival and Oswestry Community Games. As a town council we are pleased to be able to support others who are bringing attractions to Oswestry centre. “I’ve also been honoured to spend time
Celebrity switch-ons
There’s a sporting theme to Oswestry’s Christmas switch-on this year when the town sees two Team GB sportsmen turn on the festive lights. Paralympic archer Mikey Hall will be turning on the lights at Bailey Head on 17 November from 4pm. Then on 19 November, Team GB wheelchair basketball player Mark Fosbrook will turn on the Rotary Club of Oswestry’s Tree of Light at 5pm at Sainsbury’s Oswestry.

working with young people in my role as councillor and mayor.” Paul is proud to have seen first hand much of the work that goes on in the town and was privileged to be one of the first visitors to the new theatre project at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital and see the exciting £15.1 million investment in wards and new operating theatres. “We should be very proud that Oswestry has facilities that are of national excellence,” he says. He has also seen Oswestry take its 12th consecutive Gold award in Heart of England. More recently, Paul was also delighted to see Oswestry Town Council nominated for three awards at the National Association of Local Councils’ Star Councils 2016 Awards. Out of 9,000 local councils, Oswestry was put forward for Project of the Year, Clerk of the Year and Council of the Year. Oswestry Town Council is down to the final three in the Council of the Year category. “We are delighted with the recognition. It is amazing to be down to the final three out of so many councils in England and Wales,” he said.
Poison Dart Frogs at college Laura Pugh, an animal care lecturer at North Shropshire College’s (NSC) Walford Campus has successfully bred a number of Blue Poison Dart Frogs; this is the first time in a number of years that the diminutive amphibians have been bred at the college. The frogs, which are famous for their toxic skin and bright colours, originate from rainforests in South America and are fed a diet that prevents their skin from becoming toxic. Laura said: “I started the project about 12 months ago, with many unsuccessful attempts at actually getting a tadpole to hatch but now we currently have three frogs and seven tadpoles. It takes a lot of time and dedication to ensure correct temperature, humidity n Laura Pugh with one of the tiny and feeding procedures are correct to successfully hatch and rear a Blue Poison Dart Frogs frog, the whole process can take a few months.”
Organisers of the Oswestry Youth Music Festival, which celebrates its 40th anniversary next year, are hoping for a record number of entries before the closing date of 20 January. This year is the 40th anniversary of the festival. In order to mark the big birthday, there will be a concert on Saturday 4 March in which previous winners have been invited to perform. The festival is also running its annual logo competition. Entries should be sent to the Guildhall by Friday 20 January 2017. Find Oswestry Youth Musical Festival on Facebook for more information or contact Sue Turner on 01691 680550.
Safety at The Centre Action has been taken to prevent children climbing on to the roof of The Centre in Oswestry. A fence has been installed on the roof of The Centre, in Oak Street, to prevent children putting themselves in danger by trespassing. The installation follows a number of recent incidents of youths climbing on to the roof, and aims to prevent continued unauthorised access by local youngsters.
Looking to the past Four local ‘celebrities’ have allowed historical experts to delve into their past for a Who Are You Anyway event at Oswestry Library on 8 November. Town Mayor Cllr Paul Milner and Oswestry Advertizer editor Colin Channon are among guests who will discover more about their ancestors thanks to Oswestry Family & Local History Group. It starts at 7pm, tickets cost £5 from the library.
Grants for clubs The Rotary Club of Oswestry is inviting applications for grants from the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund. Arts or sports group from the area who could use some funding to get their project off the ground have until 30 November to submit their applications. eaturing two Team GB paralympians, local schools, clubs and 1,000 visitors, the fourth Oswestry Community Games was hailed a great success by organisers and participants alike. The 2016 event, which was started to honour the London Olympics and Paralympics in 2012, saw round 1,000 people visit Cae Glas Park, in Oswestry, on Sunday 25 September in the spirit of getting involved in local sports and arts. The Games is built around local people and local organisations taking part, and is aimed at showcasing activities that people of all ages can have a go at and access locally across sport, dance and the arts. Despite the awful weather overnight, conditions improved rapidly in the morning and organisers were rewarded with the great turnout across the day. Organisers said that the introduction of the
dance area proved particularly successful as well as the new activities which were on display including archery, hockey, Shropshire Paddlesports and yoga. For the first time, schools and clubs were invited to go along for the event’s ‘have-a-go sessons’. Primary school teams from Bellan House, Criftins, in Ellesmere, Trefonen, and Whittington, as well as Oswestry Cubs, took part in a variety of half-hour sessions. Key organiser Clive Knight said that the Community Games team was also delighted to welcome Paralympian archer Mikey Hall from St Martins, who had only just returned from Rio where he reached the quarterfinals. Guest of honour Mark Fosbrook, of Team GB Wheelchair Basketball who was a non-travelling reserve for Rio Paralympics, was there throughout the day taking part and inspiring people to do more, and recorded the fastest time in the Active 8 rowing challenge. Master of ceremonies David Davies was on
hand to oversee proceedings and superbly lead the day. At the closing ceremony, around 500 medals sponsored by Oswestry Sports Forum were presented to representatives of around 50 organisations by Mark Fosbrook and Oswestry Mayor Cllr Paul Milner. Clive Knight said: “It was very encouraging to see the progression made from last year’s Games to introduce new local organisations and consequently provide a more varied programme across the breadth of physical and arts activity. Many thanks go to our numerous local financial sponsors, to the volunteer working group for their hard work throughout the year, and in particular to Hazel Davis, our arts co-ordinator.” Clive and Hazel are already looking forward to more arts and sports participation for next year’s event on Sunday 24 September 2017. “We will of course be delighted to hear from anyone interested in helping us with the delivery of next year’s Community Games,” said Clive.

FIREWORKS
Bonfire Night goes with a BANG! For 28 years The Treble Niners have entertained families and raised charity funds at the town’s firework display
R
emember, remember the fifth of November. It’s a date that’s ingrained in the brains and highlighted on the calendars of a group of retired and retained firefighters in Oswestry. For the past 28 years, the group named The Treble Niners have organised a town bonfire and firework display behind the fire station at Brogyntyn. It’s the chance to make sure families enjoy a stunning, but safe, organised event and also the opportunity to raise a huge amount of money for charity. It was an idea that came about through a meeting between David Preston, retired station officer Mike Wilkinson and retained firefighter John Davies. The three wanted to raise money for local good causes and charities. “The fire service has a long tradition of fund raising and this was simply an idea that evolved from this, but involved the Oswestry Town council and serving and retired fire fighters,” says John Davies. Retained firefighter John says he is the partnership link between the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Oswestry Town Council. “I have been a retained firefighter since 1983, and am the current watch/station manager. The fire station has two frontline fire appliances and one off-road vehicle responding to approximately 400 plus calls a year, making Oswestry the busiest retained station in Shropshire,” he says. John, who lives near the fire station, has been a member of Treble Niners for 28 years. He has been awarded the Queen’s Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for more than 20 years’ service, along with the Queen’s Birthday Medal and a Long Service award for exemplary service. “We have 22 personnel at Oswestry who all help with the staging of this event, this starts very early on the Saturday morning continues through the day and finishes late on the Saturday evening.
‘We have raised more than £70,000 over the 28 years with all the money going to local good causes and charities’
n The Treble Niners and Oswestry Town Council have organised another spectacular event on 5 November
n Above left: Lord Lieutenant Algernon Heber-Percy presents retained firefighter John Davies with his Long Service award
n Right: Each year The Treble Niners presents cheques to many local charities The following morning there is also a number of hours cleaning up (usually litter), we also have a considerable amount of help from employees of the town council who also provide equipment. “We don’t really have time to enjoy the event, however our families get involved. We also respond to emergency calls, which is our priority; we always have two appliances ready to respond at a minute’s notice to any emergency incident.” Sadly, Bonfire Night can be a busy night for unfortunate reasons as well the Brogyntyn bonfire. “Over the years we had numerous calls to out-of-control bonfires and fire-related injuries. We urge people to attend organised displays firstly because it is far safer and usually more spectacular, and last but not least far cheaper especially if you have a large family,” he says. It seems that most families agree and the
organised evening regularly pulls in 3,000-4,000 adults and children. This year, the event takes place on Saturday 5 November at Brogyntyn Park, Oswestry. The fire will be lit at 7pm with fireworks at 7.30pm. There will be the usual food/drink stalls, fairground rides and children’s toys, lights and glow sticks. “We have raised more than £70,000 over the years with all the money going to local good causes and charities,” says John. The support of Oswestry Town Council, who now fund the running costs, means more money can go straight to charity. Over the years, local charities such as Hope House, the Orthopaedic Hospital, County Air Ambulance and the National Firefighters Charity have been among the main causes to benefit from The Treble Niners’ hard work. And, this year’s event looks set to be yet another sparkling success.

Proud to support local business Plumbing, heating and gas fitting company M-TEC, in Oswestry, is an expanding business that hasn’t lost sight of its roots. M-TEC owner Matt Pierce set up his firm, in Maesbury Road Industrial Estate, back in 2007 and the company has been going from strength to strength ever since. During that time M-TEC has grown from one man and a van to a team of four with further expansion planned. Despite success, supporting local is still Matt’s core value; employing local people and building the community is key. “We are involved in a number of new builds in the area, bringing homes for the future to the people of Oswestry. But we are also strongly committed to our private customers who have grown to trust and rely on us over the years, they are what built the business and we remain loyal to them,” says Matt. The company has expanded over time and as well as Matt, who is out daily meeting his customers’ needs, he also employs office manager Lorraine Fearne, fully qualified heating and plumbing engineer Lawrence Robson and apprentice Simon Morris. M-TEC has expanded to take on many commercial projects including two Wrekin Housing Trust projects: a 53-home development on the former Richard Burbridge balustrade manufacturing site in Unicorn Road, Oswestry; and 46 new homes at the old Oswestry Leisure Centre site. Matt is also working on luxury apartments including a penthouse in Shrewsbury for an Oswestry-based landlord and developer. But the business, which is a member of the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors, also remains focused on valued private customers. “My business was built on the back of their day-to-day support, and I

recognise how important it is to look after them in return,” he says. “We call or mail reminders for annual boiler services to all our clients, one less thing for them to have to remember – not only is it vital from a safety aspect but is often required to keep the manufacturer’s warranty up to date and valid, and to comply with many home insurance policies,” he continues. As part of Matt’s commitment to the local economy, he sources parts and fittings from nearby family firms and is committed to employing staff from the area. “Lawrence and Simon, like me, are local lads who I’ve trained as apprentices on leaving The Marches School, in Oswestry. I was trained as an apprentice locally before branching out on my own so I believe it’s important to give something back to the community.” As part of the business’s ongoing expansion, Matt is currently seeking another plumbing and heating engineer to join the ever growing team. He welcomes potential engineers to phone or call by the office for a friendly chat. For more information telephone 0800 9247 467 or 07951 199362 or email info@mtec-gas.co.uk

EDUCATION
In our monthly round-up we take a look at what Shropshire students have been getting up to Year 8 pupils from Packwood Haugh School in Ruyton XI Towns travelled to The Netherlands for their humanities trip, a visit that encompassed geography, history and art – and, for some, a smattering of politics too when they were lucky enough to visit the Dutch Parliament in session. A day in Amsterdam saw the children exploring the galleries of the famous Rijksmuseum, and visiting the Anne Frank House.
Pupils at Holy Trinity C of E Primary School, in Oswestry, held a Macmillan coffee afternoon. The children in Year 6 organised the event and invited parents to come along and make cake donations. They sold cakes to the other children on the playground during the day and held a raffle for Macmillan teddies. They raised more than £500.
North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson visited the catering department at North Shropshire College, where principal Jackie Doodson (right) introduced him to students who were learning to make pizza.
Pupils Benjamin Elliott, Kirsty Hosskisson-Craven, Ross Jones, Billy Austin, Amelia Begum and Evan Davies from Criftins C of E Primary School, in Ellesmere, were among 410 pupils who took part in The Rotary Club of Oswestry’s annual LifeLine event. Year 6 pupils from 25 primary schools took over the Showground at Park Hall, Oswestry to take part in a half day learning about social awareness and personal safety.
Year 6 primary students from Trefonen C of E Primary School, near Oswestry, were among 35 Year 6 pupils from the area who embarked on a trip to Chester University as part of The Marches Futures Award. Organised by The Marches School, the trip to Chester University was designed to ignite the aspirations of the students and provide them with an insight into higher education and the opportunities that will be available to them in the future. Students spent the day at the Chester University Parkgate Road campus and attended a range of activities and presentations.Students also enjoyed a full tour of the campus and facilities by the student ambassadors and found out, first hand, what being a university student is really like. The primary schools involved were Woodside Primary, Holy Trinity C of E Primary, Trefonen C of E Primary, The Meadows Primary and Whittington Primary.

Never a need to suffer in silence Experts at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital are urging people not to put up and shut up about ‘embarrassing’ bladder and bowel problems
O
ne in three women and one in 10 men suffer some incontinence during their lifetime; and 50% of women who have had children have been affected by some kind of vaginal prolapse. Yet despite being an extremely common problem, many are suffering in silence, believing that it’s just something they have to live with. A free event at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital aims to teach women and men that pelvic floor and bowel-related problems are not normal, and that no-one need just put up with them whatever their age or circumstance. On 24 November, consultants Mr Jon LacyColson and Mr Adam Farquharson along with specialist senior physiotherapist Rachel Bromley host an educational event regarding bowel related and pelvic floor problems and treatment options. The event, starting at 6.30pm, will include presentations and the chance to talk directly to the experts in an informal and relaxed way. Mr Jon Lacy-Colson says that anyone living with problems should not be embarrassed and should seek treatment. “There are many people out there living with conditions that are treatable. Pelvic floor and bowel conditions are as common as diabetes or high blood pressure but people don’t discuss them in the same way, or think that there’s nothing that can be done. “People are far more reticent about coming forward and assume these are problems that they just have to put up with. “I have patients whose lives have been put on hold as they are worried about being too far from a toilet, or they feel unclean. It can affect social life, self confidence and relationships with partners. “I’ve had patients who hardly leave the house and have had to stop walking the dog or going out, because of problems that are entirely treatable.” Mr Lacy-Colson, who has now settled in
Dorrington, near Shrewsbury, has worked all over the world. And, as a member of the Pelvic Floor Society, understands the latest research into treatments and procedures. Mr Lacy-Colson urges people to seek treatment sooner rather than later. “Any problem can be more easily treated if picked up early. It is also essential to rule out anything more sinister which could lead to these symptoms. “If we don’t investigate we can’t help. Incontinence, constipation, unusual blood or any feelings of abnormal bulging are all symptoms that should be shared with your GP or a specialist.” Physiotherapist Rachel Bromley feels it is vital to educate everyone about their bodies and open more discussions so we don’t feel embarrassed to talk about such common symptoms. “A lot of my job is about information, education and advice,” she says. She treats a wide range of pelvic floor dysfunction in women and men, including bladder and bowel incontinence, vaginal prolapse and sexual pain. “As a nation we are getting slightly better, women sometimes talk to close friends and there is more information available through the media. I’m hoping taboos are being broken down gradually, but there are many people who think that a weak pelvic floor is just part and parcel of having children or getting older. “I can’t emphasise enough that these problems are not a normal part of getting older. “It’s important that we learn more about our own anatomy and dispel these myths. Leaking urine is not normal whatever age you are. It’s not just a matter of popping on a pad whatever those adverts say!” As a physiotherapist who specialises in pelvic floor function, Rachel can assess function and teach exercises to strengthen the associated muscles. “Women often leave hospital after having a baby with a leaflet on pelvic floor exercises. Unfortunately, It’s at a time when you’ve got so much on your mind, you are tired and sore with no time to spare. It’s the worst possible time to be given a piece of paper and many women don’t give it a second glance,” she says.
 Above: Senior
physiotherapist Rachel Bromley is urging anyone with pelvic floor concerns to come and talk to her at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital’s free event
Right: Consultant Mr Jon LacyColson believes that far too many people are living with preventable problems due to embarrassment
“Yet, if childbirth were thought of in the same way as a sports injury they wouldn’t think twice about seeking help. It’s just another muscle! “There is no quick fix, but with physiotherapy and/or surgery there will be a solution. “Everyone is entitled to a good quality of life, pelvic floor and bowel problems should never hold anyone back.” For more information on bowel related and pelvic floor problems visit the free event at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, Longden Road, Shrewsbury on 24 November at 6.30pm. Booking is essential on 0333 305 3772.

T
his is quite a masculine style but perfect for an intimate living room or study where you can sit in front of a fire on a cold winter’s evening. Think dark, polished wood; a Chesterfield sofa and leather wing-back chair; a well-stocked bookcase; maps on the wall and a globe on a stand; animal heads, sporting and travel accessories; and an old wooden or leather trunk. Stick to one colour or pattern with everything else muted – you don’t want fabrics or paints fighting for attention. But you can add plenty of ornaments. So pour yourself a sherry from the cut-glass decanter, put your feet up and plan next year’s expeditions.

HOMEFIRST
With style and design in mind
An Oswestry social enterprise has proved that it has style as well as community in mind after being spotted for a London design show. Oswestry-based Designs in Mind has launched JOLT, a contemporary homeware brand which was showcased at Top Drawer, at Olympia, London in September. Top Drawer is a prestigious design trade show which attracts retailers from far and wide looking to source cutting edge design products for their companies. So it was with great excitement that Designs in Mind – a rural social enterprise, based in studios in Cross Street, Oswestry – was invited to exhibit. The 74 members are a diverse group of designers and creators referred through mental health services in Shropshire. All products in this first JOLT collection have been designed, developed and produced collaboratively by members, volunteers and staff, with 100% of sales revenue reinvested into sustaining and developing the project. JOLT challenges the predominant culture of low expectation which surrounds its makers and challenges us all to take another look. JOLT’s range was one of the main attractions at Top Drawer, chosen as one of 40 handpicked new design businesses. JOLT’s debut collection features printed lampshades, cushions, napkins and wrapping paper, boasting bold patterns and colour. Top Drawer’s ‘Spotted’ feature is curated by
n The dedicated Designs in Mind team have been delighted with positive feedback for their bold JOLT range which includes lampshades, cushions and napkins
Charlotte Abrahams, a freelance writer, author and curator who writes regular features and columns for the national press. She said: “I am constantly amazed by how much creative talent there is in the UK and I’m delighted to be able to introduce some of that talent to an international retail audience. I had no hesitation in selecting JOLT to exhibit, impressed not only by the products, but by the story of this pioneering enterprise.” A member who has been central to JOLT’S development said: “JOLT makes me feel ‘normal’ and demonstrates the improvement
to my mental and personal development. I feel privileged to be involved. By being part of the JOLT team I feel more confident.” Member Kathryn Diggens said: “Buyers of our work are impressed by the quality. They often say: ‘but your work is so professional‘. We know this is said with good intentions, but our experience tells us that people expect low quality work from a community group. We can show the world that we’re not stupid, ignorant or second class citizens. We have aspirations for our ability and the future.” Visit www.thisisjolt.co.uk for details.
Why eco homes are becoming ‘future of Oswestry’ Kate Howell, of Woodhead Sales and Lettings in the centre of Oswestry, is our ‘Secret Agent’, lifting the lid on the world of property. This month Kate’s on the eco trail: As a local business owner and mum, I try to make responsible decisions that will benefit the area and my family. It’s important to me now more than ever that I take the environmental responsibilities we all have seriously and act to preserve our beautiful part of the country. Oswestry is a traditional area; the trend for building eco homes that started down south seems to have almost avoided us entirely until recently. But there is a new generation of educated urbanites moving into town who expect their new homes to be affordable both to buy and run. Don’t be put off by the term ‘eco home’; they are in fact just better homes. Any stigma
that used to surround them – uncomfortable, ugly or you have to be a certain type of person to live in one – are long gone. All over the country, beautiful eco homes are challenging the stereotype and showing that we can live how we want to live, but responsibly too. Step forward Tesni Homes, who until recently were focused on UK renewable energy provision. Their entrance into the development business is filling a gap locally for homes with an incredible EPC ‘A’ rating. The properties on their Morda Road development feature dualfuel log-burning stoves and Velux sun pipes to enhance natural light. The buzz around the properties resulted in them selling the first home on its opening day.
Other developers are being forced to follow suit, with Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) – used to assess a dwelling’s energy performance – becoming ever tighter. Standard double glazing will have to be replaced with triple glazing and solar panels and ground source heating will become the norm on new developments. Oswestry is ready to progress and the cost-effective nature of running an eco home will suit the pockets of our buyers. Putting my money where my mouth is, I will be investing in Tesni and The Marches School’s Solar Dome Project; to create an exciting outdoor classroom space and conservation area.

Record-breaking homes launch Tedsmore Grange in West Felton has seen sales agreed on 80% of its available properties in the first week of their release. Dennis Edwards Homes, who are developing the site, were astounded by the levels of interest in the new development. After releasing 10 properties on to the market last month, they immediately agreed eight sales. Tim Main, partner and head of sales at Balfours, said: “This is one of the fastestselling developments we’ve ever seen. I think potential buyers recognise the value for money on offer here. As soon as the properties were released online, the phones started ringing. We’re delighted to have been able to secure so many sales on the development’s opening week.” Dennis Edwards, director at the firm, commented: “Tedsmore Grange is an excellent development and the fact that reservations are being taken so quickly shows that no-one wants to miss out on the chance to live in such a prime location.”
Tedsmore Grange is a collection of 35 stylish country homes set in a unique parkland setting, all with large gardens and generous room proportions. Located in the heart of the idyllic, established village of West Felton, close to the A5, Tedsmore Grange is ideally placed for commuting to Telford, Shrewsbury, Wrexham and Chester. The picture postcard village boasts a shop with post office, highly rated schools nearby and excellent pubs. With prices starting from £184,500, properties range from three to five bedroom detached, with the first due for completion in December. Such is the demand for a Dennis Edwards home in the village, some buyers are already trying to reserve plots due for completion in 2017 and beyond. Dennis ends: “As someone born and bred in West Felton, this development in particular is a real labour of love, as we’re working to bring new homes to families in the area as well as job opportunities for local tradesmen.”
n Dennis Edwards, director of Dennis Edwards Homes with Balfours’ head of sales Tim Main.
Properties are available to view online at www.dennisedwardsltd.com. Viewings and reservations can be made via the sales agent Balfours on 01743 353511.

Modern living in heart of village
T
he second phase of homes at Irvine Gardens, a wellrenowned development in the centre of St Martins, has been released by Pickstock Homes. There is a range of beautiful properties to suit all buyers: from a two-bedroom coach house to three, four and five-bedroom family homes. The properties at Irvine Gardens feature open plan spaces and a high quality, contemporary finish. “Irvine Gardens is a popular development in the heart of the village. The properties in phase one sold very quickly and we are seeing the same level of demand for phase two,” said Camilla Pickstock, sales director at Pickstock Homes.
n Custom-designed kitchens at Irvine Gardens
“Our new build homes are spacious and offer so many benefits, such as lower running costs and maintenance. If you are looking for a new home in a great village location we would urge you to come and take a look,” she added. A new build home is up to 55% cheaper to run than an older property, according to the National House Building Council (NHBC). Agent launches online valuation tool
n Woodhead owner Kate Howell is delighted with the new valuation tool for customers
An Oswestry estate agent has launched a free online valuation tool on their website. Woodhead Oswestry Sales and Lettings in Leg Street launched the facility after increasing demand for its valuation services. A sales and lettings valuation of any home can be found in 60 seconds by entering a few simple details into the website. The tool, supplied by The Guild of Professional Estate Agents – of which Woodhead is the only Oswestry representative – generates an instant valuation using data from Land Registry. Owner Kate Howell said: “The success of our estate agency is based on our consistent development of modern ways of communicating. The new online valuation service will marry our core, traditional, customer-driven values with the new technological age so our clients are delivered the best of both worlds. We fully expect our new valuation service to be the perfect launch pad for anyone considering getting their property valued.” The addition to the website is one of a number of technological advancements implemented by Woodhead in the last few months including touch screen technology on its store front. Woodhead Sales and Lettings Oswestry is an independent estate agency specialising in property sales and lettings in the town and its surrounding borders, boasting an award-winning team of local people with a passion for property. Anyone who would like to use the free valuation service should visit www.woodheadsalesandlettings.com

EDUCATION
College creating stand-out students There’s never a quiet week at New College Telford. Whether you are planning to go to university, take a higher level apprenticeship or clinch a new job, the Wellington-based campus provides all the support you need to be successful and achieve your ambitions. Keen to know more? The college, in King Street, is opening its doors on 16 November for an information and advice evening, from 6pm to 8pm. It’s the second open evening of the new academic year – a chance to have a good look round, meet staff in a relaxed environment, and find out more about courses on offer. There’s no appointment needed; just drop in. The college’s goal is to equip students with the ambition, skills and confidence to stand out from the crowd. Thinking bigger . . . aiming higher . . . shining brighter . . . that’s what New College Telford students do. The college has the widest range of level three courses available in the Telford area, including

academic subjects such as English literature, maths, chemistry, biology and history. Vocational options include media studies, health & social care, computer graphics, outdoor education, and ICT. Chris Wain, head of student experience, says: “Our students have the option to take the academic route, the vocational route, or a combination of both.
Sixth former’s national win A Sixth Form pupil from Shrewsbury High School has been named overall winner in a national film competition. Year 12 pupil Alexandra Dewing has been awarded the top prize in a Met Film School storytelling challenge. Entrants from outside the Film School were asked to create fun, thoughtful or challenging content about Brexit with a pitch in the form of a script, PowerPoint presentation or video pitch. The most interesting and original idea was chosen as the winner and Alex won the top prize for her script ‘A Silent Voice’. Met Film School is one of the UK’s fastest growing screen, film, television, and online media schools, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and short courses across various craft areas. Classes are led by award-winning professionals and are renowned for being both industry focused and highly practical. The school’s campus is based within West London’s famous Ealing Studios and it is here that n Alex Dewing will see her script made into a video Alex will now have the chance to turn her idea into at Ealing Studios a video, working with the Met Film School production team, with a production budget of up to £2,500. She also receives a place on a short course of her choice at Met, worth up to £4,500. Alex, who studies English, Latin and French at Shrewsbury High School, is hoping to study French and Film at University College London, and this prize will certainly stand her in good stead. She was over the moon with her win, saying: “I chose to enter a script as this is what I enjoy most and thought it would be the easiest way to put my idea across. I also had to pitch why my idea was special. I can’t believe that out of everyone who entered across the whole country I have been chosen as the winner. I can’t wait to get down to Ealing Studios and start filming.” Shrewsbury High School’s Sixth Form information evening takes place on Tuesday 8 November. For more information, call 01743 494 038.
“Our specialist teaching staff have a proven track record of supporting students with their level three studies, and New College Telford has fantastic links with universities, and a tailored programme around careers advice and guidance.” There are Higher Education options at New College for those who want to take the next step with a university-level qualification in a comfortable and supportive environment. New College Telford offers apprenticeships too – there are currently dozens of opportunities available in areas such as catering, hospitality, business administration, customer service, management, health & social care, and early years education. Nursing place is dream come true Jodie Shaw has spent more than a decade caring for her mother, who had a stroke when her daughter was just 10 years old. The 21-year-old, from Woodside, watched how nurses looked after her mother when she had to be admitted to hospital – and said it inspired her to become an adult nurse. The dream is on the way to becoming a reality, after Jodie completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at Telford College of Arts and Technology, earning a place at Keele University. It has not been an easy journey. Jodie initially failed to achieve the A Level grades required for higher education, and once she finally got a place at TCAT, she worked 30 hours a week at McDonald’s to support her through college. Her tutors said it was her determination, attitude, and across-the-board distinction grades on her units which earned her a Learner of the Year award at this year’s TCAT celebration of achievement ceremony. Jodie said: “The hard work and dedication from all of the teaching staff I had at TCAT have helped me to be where I am today. Without all of their support and the great resources at TCAT, I would not have been able to achieve my dream.” Jodie was offered places at four different universities at the end of her TCAT course, but chose Keele which is currently rated second in the Guardian league table for Nursing and Midwifery.

Let a light shine for someone special
this Christmas
Christmas is a time to celebrate with loved ones, look back fondly over happy years and to remember those we have loved and lost. For many it can also be a time of sadness, when the loss of a loved one is most keenly felt, a time when we particularly remember those people whom we love but, sadly, see no longer. But the Tree of Light is not only about remembering those we have lost. It is also about celebrating, a time to be glad and grateful for all of the gifts we have received and to remember how good life has been to us. A wedding anniversary, an engagement, a special birthday, a treasured friendship, the birth of a child; all of these things we can celebrate by making a dedication on
The Tree of Light.

Humanity and humour
O
swestry artist Darren Fraser’s work features faces, chimpanzees and animals in bold oils on canvas. His work, he says, explores different aspects of the human condition. He is fascinated by the nature of personality and individuality; he looks for and explores this in all his works, whether it be strangers, people in disguise, clowns and even apes.
n In his studio, Darren works on The Barber
While Darren’s work is characterised by drama, humour and the study of relationships, it is the affection and humanity with which he captures and presents his subjects that gives his work such a personal feel and which pulls in and engages the viewer. His work shows a strong feeling for light and shade. Simplified surfaces and exaggerated forms – as well as the intensified highlights – render masses dramatic and mysterious. Often sparse, but always deft, his use of colour is insightful and uplifting, giving his subjects a glow of individuality. These qualities, along with his bold graphic lines, keep his work fresh and alive. He says his aim is “to keep it simple. I am interested in how we have to be a certain way in society in order to get by. To fit in, to please. “I use the guise of chimpanzees to explore this idea. I also base a lot of my pieces on what I simply find interesting. Situations I’m in, people I meet.” However his biggest inspiration, he says, is his wife, Beatriz. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Darren has spent time living in Stroud, Peterborough, London and Spain before settling in Shropshire. Darren and Beatriz have lived in Oswestry for the past seven years, where Darren has a studio behind the Willow Gallery, in Willow Street. He studied for a National Diploma in Art and Design specialising in sculptural ceramics at Swansea Institute, Wales. “I started my love for art in Wisbech, Lincs at
n ‘The Apprentice’
the Isle College. I completed a sculptural ceramics course at Swansea Institute then got accepted into the prestigious Elisabeth Frink School of Figurative Sculpture. This is were I immersed myself in the world of sculpture, painting and drawing,” he says. “At the completion of this course I got put forward by the president of the Mall Galleries to apply for the Prix de Rome drawing scholarship. Amazingly I got the scholarship which was based at the British School in Rome.” Darren is currently exhibiting at the Cloud Gallery, in Chester, as well as the George Thornton Art Gallery, Nottingham through which Darren’s work has spent a second consecutive year at the Bristol Affordable Arts Fair. He has also had two solo shows in Cordoba, Spain. Closer to home, Darren loves to teach and work alongside other artists. “I have just had a weekend life model portraiture painting course which was a great success. I love doing these courses,” he says. He is running a two-day oil painting course at the Willow Gallery on 12-13 November. “I also run an art group, based in my studio. I have a great group, they are always full of enthusiasm and very talented. I am in my studio every weekend and when it suits someone in the art group they turn up for the day and paint, it's absolute bliss.” For more information visit www.fraser-art. com. Tasty treats to eat with a clear conscience
It is World Vegan Day on 1 November and the entire month is given over to World Vegan Month. Whether you go vegan for 24 hours or the full 30 days, it’s the perfect opportunity to join the estimated half a million people already leading a vegan lifestyle
T
he Vegan Society is encouraging people to learn about the benefits of a plant-based diet and way of life; as well as helping towards the welfare of animals, veganism offers benefits to the environment and possibly to our health. For further inspiration, visit the UK’s longest-running event of its kind, The West Midlands Vegan Festival, from 29-30 October at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall. With more than 120 stalls, inspiring talks and around 5,000 visitors the festival, now in its ninth year, offers inspiration for vegan, vegetarians and interested carnivores alike. Visit www.midlandsveganfestival.org.uk for more information. For those scared that a vegan diet will mean missing out on tasty treats, then think again with these delicious recipes.
Sichuan Mixed Vegetables serves 4 Ingredients 2 tbsp chilli oil 4 garlic cloves, crushed 5cm/2ins piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated 250g/9oz carrots, cut into thin strips 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into thin strips 150g/5½oz shiitake mushrooms, sliced 150g/5½oz mangetout 3 tbsp soy sauce 3 tbsp crunchy peanut butter 350g/12oz beansprouts cooked rice, to serve
Method Heat the chilli oil in a preheated wok and fry the garlic, ginger and carrots for 3 minutes. Add the red pepper and stir-fry for another 2 minutes. Add the mushrooms and mangetout and stirfry for 1 minute. In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce and peanut butter until combined. Using a wooden spoon, make a space in the centre of the stir-fried vegetables so that the base of the wok is visible. Pour in the sauce and bring to the boil, stirring all the time until it starts to thicken. Add the beansprouts and toss the vegetables to coat thoroughly with the sauce. Transfer to a serving dish and serve immediately with freshly cooked rice.

Chocolate Hazelnut Bites courtesy of www.meridianfoods.co.uk A vegan and paleo take on a chocolate classic. One bite and you’ll be hooked.
Makes 8-10 Ingredients 1tbsp coconut oil, melted 3 tbsp Meridian hazelnut butter 50g vegan chocolate A sprinkle of flaked salt (optional)
Method Combine the coconut oil and hazelnut butter well and put in the freezer to firm up. Melt the chocolate and set aside to cool. When the hazelnut mixture has set use two teaspoons to mould rough balls then dip them in the melted chocolate. Add a flake or two of Maldon salt if including. Return to the freezer. Notes: If the chocolate is too warm when you dip the bites it will melt the hazelnut butter so make sure it’s quite cool and gently reheat if it gets too stiff.
Double Chocolate Cake by www.fairfoods.org.uk This makes a lovely moist cake which you can fill with vanilla icing and a chocolate top. Or why not try our variations for chocolate orange, chocolate raspberry and chocolate blueberry?
Ingredients Cake 8oz (225g) caster sugar 4 dssps cocoa powder 1 /2 tsp salt 9oz (255g) plain white flour 3oz (85g) plain wholemeal flour 11/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 6 fl oz (170ml) vegetable oil 2 tsp vanilla essence 4 tsp vinegar 2 /3 pint (350ml) cold water Filling 11/2oz (45g) vegan margarine 4oz (115g) icing sugar 1 /2 tsp vanilla essence soya milk Topping – 5oz (140g) vegan plain chocolate Decoration – A few squares of vegan plain chocolate
Method Sieve the sugar, cocoa, salt, flours and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and mix well. Add the oil, vanilla essence, vinegar and (cold) water. Combine well with a fork or spoon, but do not beat. Pour into two greased sandwich tins. Cook at 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 for 30 minutes or until the cake springs back lightly when pressed. Cool thoroughly.
To make the filling, mash the margarine and vanilla essence into the sugar with a fork. Add enough soya milk to get your desired consistency – add a tiny bit at a time though! Refrigerate until use and when the cakes are cool use it to sandwich them together. Make the topping by melting the chocolate in a double saucepan*. Smooth the chocolate icing on the top, then decorate with flakes of chocolate (grate the chocolate and/or cut it really finely with a sharp knife). Variations – for chocolate orange cake use vegan orange-flavoured chocolate to ice the top. For chocolate blueberry or raspberry cake, put a layer of blueberry/raspberry jam in the middle of the cake along with the icing.

Brazillionaires Shortbread courtesy of www.meridianfoods.co.uk Family favourites, chocolate millionaire bars, are given a Brazil nut twist.
An Indian restaurant in Ludlow has been highly commended in the Tiffin Cup, an annual competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the UK. Philip Dunne MP put forward Golden Moments earlier this year, after asking constituents to contact him with their nominations.
Serves 18 Ingredients 100g raw whole oats 100g ground almonds 2 tbsp agave nectar 70g coconut oil, melted 90g Meridian Brazil nut butter 100g vegan chocolate
Method Line a loaf tin or similar with greaseproof paper. Whizz the oats in a blender until they are a similar consistency to the ground almonds. Add the almonds and agave and whizz again, then add 2 tbsp water and blend until the mixture starts to form clumps. Press the mixture into the prepared tin then freeze while you make the next layer. Melt the coconut oil and combine 50g with the Brazil nut butter, spread it over the oat base and return to the freezer. Carefully melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Once completely melted, remove the bowl from the pan, stir in the remaining coconut oil and allow to cool for a few minutes. When the Brazil nut layer has set pour the chocolate over the top and spread to the edges. Put in the fridge until everything is firm. Cut into bite size pieces and serve. Keep in the fridge.
Triple Chocolate Muffins by www.fairfoods.org.uk who are providing the catering at the West Midlands Vegan Festival These are easy to make and even easier to eat. You can change the ratios of flour if desired: it is fine to use just white or just wholemeal flour, though you’ll need to add a bit more water if you use all white flour. The cake will take on a slightly different texture depending on which you use (being lighter with white flour).
Ingredients 8oz (225g) caster sugar 4 dessertspoons cocoa powder pinch salt 9oz (255g) plain white flour 3oz (85g) plain wholemeal flour 11/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 1oz (30g) vegan chocolate chips 6 fl oz (170ml) vegetable oil 2 tsps vanilla essence 4 tsps vinegar 2 /3 pint (350ml) cold water Icing 2oz (50g) vegan plain chocolate 1 dessertspoon vegan margarine 1 dessertspoon icing sugar, sieved Decoration – a few squares of vegan plain chocolate
Method Place the sugar, cocoa, salt, flours and bicarbonate of soda in a mixing bowl and mix well. Add the chocolate chips, oil, vanilla essence, vinegar and water. Combine well with a fork, but do not beat. Pour into 12 muffin cases. Bake at 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4 for 15 minutes or until the cake springs back lightly when pressed. Cool thoroughly. To make the icing, melt the chocolate in a double saucepan with the margarine and icing sugar. Stir to ensure that the ingredients are well combined. Smooth a spoonful of icing on each cake, leave to cool for a few minutes then decorate with flakes of chocolate (grate the chocolate and/or cut it really finely with a sharp knife).

Magic of spice Businesswoman and cook Lajina Leal brings a sprinkle of spice and a touch of magic to recipes, uncovering the secrets of a perfect homecooked curry
L
ajina Leal’s business, Lajina Masala, has been born out of her passion for quality, healthy, home-cooked Indian food. From Priorslee, in Telford, Lajina was encouraged to start her own business by friends who said they preferred her style of home cooking to many of the more commercial dishes they were offered when they ate out. She started making up little spice pots, packed with all the spices and flavours she had used to cook for friends and family and, before she knew it, had become a one-woman spice dynamo. The Lajina Masala spice pots contain all the spices needed to create perfect curries in one pot. It’s ideal for any foodie and curry lover who is pressed for time as Lajina has taken all the stress out of the cooking process. The spices are lovingly prepared by hand; roasted and ground before being carefully measured and packed into the pots. With a little tweaking these pots provide many options including Lajina’s take on a Jalfrezi, Korma, Tikka Masala and Rogan Josh. “I love to make the Masala Magic spice mix

Ask the pharmacist John Gentle, pharmacist manager at Day Lewis, in Oswestry, hopes to clear up some of the misconceptions regarding antibiotics
Everyone knows about antibiotics and many assume they know the ins and outs of this type of medication. But we know a lot of people are confused about what they are and what they can be used for. I’m John Gentle, pharmacist manager at Day Lewis on Oswald Road in Oswestry (formerly The Pharmacy @ Caxton), and in this month’s column I’ll be trying to debunk some antibiotic myths for you. Essentially, they are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infection by either killing the bacteria or preventing them from spreading. They cannot ever be used against viral infections. So when our customers ask us why their GP won’t prescribe them when they’ve got a common cold, flu, cough or sore throat, we have to tell them that unfortunately they just M R A A wouldn’t work. There is absolutely no use putting unnecessary medication inside you that we know from extensive research won’t make any difference to your ailment, so if you do have a viral infection please ask us about alternative A X@ O T medications which will be much more suitable. Currently there is a big push to reduce the amount of antibiotics we, as a global community, take as antibiotics resistance is becoming a huge problem. Put simply, this means bacteria becomes immune to the medication, effectively creating a ‘superbug’ that cannot be treated as easily. There are some very serious illnesses which have become resistant to a lot of antibiotics including MRSA and C.diff. So it’s important to listen to healthcare professionals if they tell you antibiotics are not suitable for your illness, you’re not just helping yourself but potentially others too if we can all reduce their usage. As part of this, there is a European wide Antibiotic Awareness Day on 18 November when healthcare professionals and members of the public are encouraged to become an Antibiotic Guardian. This means pledging to help reduce their usage and stop them becoming obsolete. Visit www.antibioticguardian.com to find out more. Or to ask us a question about antibiotics, or about a range of other medications, illnesses and injuries, call 01691 653033. Rea Valley Farmers emerge victorious the from annual tug of war event
Battle of brawn champs
It was a battle of strength and determination at the return of the iconic Clash of the Titans Tug of War event, hosted by the British Ironwork Centre last month. And this year the annual test of muscle and grit featured more women than ever before. Each year the Centre invites teams from across the county to take part in a contest of strength, endurance and skill. This year saw three ladies teams take part. Oswestry CrossFit, Rea Valley Young Farmers and British Ironworks all entered teams of forceful females. Joanne Jones, of British Ironworks, said: “The competition has become fiercer and the banter more brutal! The latest competitors joined together with more teams than ever before. For the first time since its inception, this battle of brawn saw the induction of three incredible ladies teams.” The Rea Valley Farmers emerged victorious after a final showdown with the rope traditionally set alight for the final pull. Other teams included Whittington and Oswestry Rugby Club and men’s teams from Oswestry Crossfit and British Ironworks. Visit: www.gotothevenue.com

Twelve Green Bottles celebrated two years in business on 10 October, and its successful wine club toasted its first birthday. The two occasions were celebrated during the birthday Wine Club at Willow Gallery, in Willow Street. Willow Eatery owner and cake maker Lindsay Chaplin provided party food and a specially created birthday cake for the occasion. Mandy Jenkins, of Twelve Green Bottles, said they were delighted to celebrate their success, especially of the wine club. She said: “Over the past 12 months we have consistently had more than 30 people at each wine club event on the first Thursday of each month. They have proved so popular.”. Got to www.twelvegreenbottleswine.co.uk or telephone 01691 650160 for details.
An outdoor activity and training business has celebrated its first birthday with another big adventure – by investing in an additional café bar and restaurant. TNR Coaching, based at Chirk Marina, was set up by Tom Robinson and Rich Witheridge last year as a business in coaching, teambuilding, adventures and training, specialising in canoeing, kayaking, bushcraft and climbing. From a one-hour taster session for beginners, to courses for experienced instructors, to team building or stag events, the experienced pair offer whatever adventure you want with a relaxed and friendly attitude. This month, they have taken on an extra challenge of their own by taking over The Boathouse at Chirk. Tom has had a love of the outdoors since he could walk and has been teaching outdoor adventures for 15 years. He has run courses all over the UK, France and Kenya but now seems very much settled in the region. Rich has been paddling for 31 years
and coaching for more than 20 years. He has also been a manager for Bass Pubs and an IT engineer. The pair are pleased to be able to offer their new bar and restaurant to customers to make their experience even better. Tom said: “We are going to work our socks off to make this beautiful place a hub and venue from our communities in the area. We’re going to bring tasty, wholesome home cooked food with veg from our garden, a relaxed place to enjoy a coffee with friends, a place to meet for your club, hobby group or society. “We also want to give amazing outdoor experiences in this gorgeous part of North Wales. Soon you will be able to come and camp, stay over in the bunkhouse and already you can enjoy a boatload of family friendly activities on the River Dee, the Llangollen Canal and in the hills around Chirk.” Courses continue all year round, and November sees a multi-activity weekend from 19-20 November. For more information visit www.tnrcoaching.co.uk or find TNR Coaching on Facebook.
Can you afford not to plan for your later life? Pension planning can seem complicated but providing for your financial future is vital says Amanda Lloyd, Shropshire Review’s new financial expert I’ve discovered as an Independent Financial Adviser, pensions is a topic of much discussion and confusion for clients. With the average lifespan of a woman now 89 and a man age 86 (National Life Tables, Office for National Statistics 2012-2014), it’s important not to ignore your pension options. However, with frequent changes in pension laws and the vast amount of paperwork that we receive each time we get a yearly statement, it’s hardly surprising that many of us just file our pension paperwork away without giving it a second thought. Our retirement plans are often the subject of conversation among friends; planning for a time in which we can fully relax and enjoy a less stressful life. We aspire to take that once-ina-lifetime trip, enjoy spending time with our expanding families and consider purchasing that motorhome so we can travel in style! Recent data shows that one in five of us do not make any provisions towards their pension savings. Research by the DWP shows that on average, individuals will work for 11 employers during their lifetime, accumulating multiple pension pots from different providers. As a result, keeping track of benefits is likely to prove
to be a challenge for most of us. Consolidation of pensions can make management far easier and gives a clearer overall picture of our pension provision, giving individuals the opportunity to make up any potential shortfalls. So what is a pension? A pension scheme is a type of savings plan to help you save money for later life. It also has favourable tax treatment compared to other types of savings because you receive tax relief on any contributions that you make. This is at the highest rate of income tax that you pay, provided that the total gross pension contributions paid into your pension scheme, by you, your employer and anyone else don’t exceed the lower of your annual earnings and the annual allowance. At age 55 you can take 25% of this as tax free cash with a number of options available with regard to income from the remaining pension pot. Should I be aware of any recent changes? In March 2016, The Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee highlighted three categories of people who would potentially lose out under the new single tier system (maximum
benefit £155/week), in particular those with less than 10 years’ NI contribution record required to qualify for any pension. It has now been reported that the DWP will be writing to 100,000 people caught by the 10-year rule to warn them that the new system will give them no state pension benefit whatsoever. People will often say to me: “what if I don’t live long enough to enjoy my retirement?”. However, the question you should really be asking is, “What happens when I do?”. To arrange a free, no obligation assessment on 01691 670524, or email me, Amanda Lloyd at Amanda@beaumont-financial. co.uk Alternatively, visit our website www.beaumont-financial.co.uk or pop in to 21 Salop Road, Oswestry.

Stepfather won’t give us Mum’s jewellery because it wasn’t in her Will. What can we do? Q: Our mother inherited some valuable jewellery from her mother which she always said would pass to me and my sister when anything happened to her. However, when she recently died we discovered that she had not put this in her Will and our step-father has refused to hand over the jewellery, despite being present on many occasions when Mum said it would one day be ours. Our step-father also has Mum’s engagement ring which was given to her by our Dad and some other pieces given to her by our paternal grandmother. We are particularly worried as we have heard our stepfather is already seeing another woman and we couldn’t bear for a stranger to get our Mum’s jewellery. Is there anything we can do?

A: People are entitled to leave their estate to anyone they like and in whatever way they like. There are however a number of grounds that can be relied upon to challenge a Will. You need to seek legal advice on which, if any, of these grounds might be applicable. In some cases any claim in an estate must be commenced within 6 months of the date of the Grant of Probate so you should make an appointment with a solicitor as soon as possible. If you are unable to contest your mother’s Will you could consider Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and, in particular, mediation. A solicitor who specialises in ADR could open negotiations with your stepfather or arrange for a third party mediator to become involved. Your solicitor could help you to set out a good case for the return of the jewellery that hopefully would then lead to the resolving of the dispute without you having to take it further. This question has been answered by Talog Davies, a Senior Solicitor with GHP Legal. For an appointment visit www.ghplegal.com or contact one of our offices: Oswestry 01691 659194, Chirk 01691 777949, Wrexham 01978 291456, Llangollen 01978 860313. Shape up at new town centre gym
Whether you want to get in shape, bulk up or follow a personal training plan, Evolution Gym, in Bailey Street, Oswestry, could be right up your street. Owner Jimmy Hayns first stepped foot in a gym at the age of 16 and hasn’t looked back since, now finally making his passion his business plan. Over the past couple of years, bodybuilding has taken the fitness scene by storm, and contrary to popular belief, it isn’t all about narcissistically ‘bulking up’. It’s fast becoming the preferred method of fitness training for men and women alike, helping gymgoers lose fat, build muscle, tone up and become stronger. An avid footballer, Jimmy studied BTEC Sports Development and Fitness through college, and gained a Level 3 qualification in spinning before
going on to train as a physical training instructor for the RAF. Realising a dream almost a decade old, he took the plunge and started strength and bodybuilding gym, Evolution Strength. Amongst the hustle and bustle of the Oswestry high street, the gym is the only one of its kind in the town and surrounding area. Evolution opened in July and has already seen 200 members sign up. “We are for men, women, experienced trainers and new starters alike,” says Jimmy. “We also have personal trainer Ceri Jones, and offer specialist supplements and snacks.” Evolution Gym can be found at 31a Bailey Street, Oswestry. Telephone 01691 239320 for details.
Lessons in loaves Jan Williams of The Grain Sheaf, in Oswestry indoor market, took a day off from her stall to show school pupils the delights of dough. Jan took part in the Eat Well Week at Morda Primary School, near Oswestry, helping pupils to create home-made bread animals. She said: “They were really creative and imaginative, making lots of great snakes and mice and hedgehogs. One little girl even made a very artistic pig face with her dough, brilliant!“
Leading the Rabbit revolution Oswestry specialist coffee shop Liar Liar has teamed up with vegan street food pop-up Fat Rabbit to supply a delicious vegan menu. Fat Rabbit Food started its pop-up life at Radio Cafe, in Bailey Street, Oswestry, and proved so popular it has expanded into the new kitchen at Liar Liar, for two days a week, with a view to growing further. Owner Linda Clark, who started the business with son and daughter Fred and Martha, is bringing vegan street food to the Bailey Street cafe to serve alongside the venue’s specialist coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Linda, who has been vegetarian for most of her life, is delighted to bring quality vegan food to Oswestry, including delicious homemade soups, sandwiches, cakes and bakes.
Dream job for Claire, thanks to Oswestry law firm A Wrexham-born woman who returned to her roots to work after studying at university has been admitted as a solicitor after completing a two-year legal training contract with one of the region’s largest law firms. Claire Parfitt, a member of the personal injury team at the Oswestry offices of GHP Legal, qualified as a solicitor in August 2016. GHP Legal appointed Claire as a paralegal at their Wrexham head office in May 2014 after she graduated from
Newcastle University and completed the LPC at the College of Law, Chester, where she also did voluntary work with the National Centre for Domestic Violence. The firm also has offices in Llangollen and Chirk. Soon after her appointment the firm – which has a long reputation for supporting the trainee solicitor programme – offered Claire a training contract and the opportunity to fulfil her dream of becoming a lawyer. Claire, who enjoys running and cycling in the surrounding
countryside, said: “I am thrilled to qualify as a solicitor with GHP Legal and I am so grateful for all of the wonderful support I have received from everybody at the firm.” Nathan Wright, a partner and head of training at GHP Legal, said: “We welcome her into the personal injury team as a fully qualified solicitor and I have no doubt that her excellent ability to understand the issues in cases and to engage with clients will benefit both our clients and our reputation as a firm.”

LAST WORD
ELEMENTARY, DEAR WATSON
Fashion statement
C
Eluned Watson ropped tops are no longer for me. To be honest it’s been a while since they
were. In fact, let’s be brutal and admit that I’m not really sure they should have ever figured in my fashion choices, full stop. But in younger days with a tummy that didn’t bulge over the top of my jeans, it seemed OK. Besides, I’d had my belly button pierced and wanted to show it off before it went septic; don’t worry, I’m now past that sort of thing as well. I have hit that age – and that shape – when I’m pretty sure I should steer clear of anything too clingy, short or downright silly, not to mention uncomfortable or chilly. The problem is, although I’m pretty certain what isn’t suitable, I’m not sure what is. I really, truly don’t know what to wear or where to shop. Where does a woman in her early (to mid) 40s go? On a recent rare shopping excursion, I popped into Topshop and discovered that younger people are wearing ‘bodies’ (a vest that does up between your legs). I used to wear them in the early 90s and figure that the old saying of ‘if you remember it the first time around then it’s best to avoid the second’ is true. Besides, they were
ridiculously fiddly and not designed for comfort. Then to River Island which couldn’t tempt me with satin shorts or ripped bleached jeans, and certainly wasn’t going to win me over with a paisley ‘shacket’ (even if I could bear the horrendous print then the idea of a shirt/jacket with its newly invented name was utterly unacceptable). Fashionwise I’ve gone through stages. In my teens I tried to look older with stiletto heels and tight skirts. For college days, I become a teeny goth – I liked black, DM boots and messy hair but never quite
If I want to plait my hair, carry an over-sized bag or wear Mary-Jane shoes then I will, whatever Ms 23-year-old Fashion Editor says committed to full-on gloomy goth status. I think my ‘style’ got lost some time after that. A former boss of mine used to describe my look as ‘bag lady chic’. It certainly wasn’t a compliment but I knew where he was coming from and took it in good spirits (besides, I’ve learnt that arguing with bosses is rarely a grand plan unless you’re planning a career move). Now that I’m over 40, I have no idea where to go. I’m not ready to embrace the beige elasticated-waist slacks and am uncomfortable with nude pop socks but can definitely not get away with a leather bomber jacket and shorts. So what to do? On the school run I wear
jeans and a T-shirt (or jumper when it’s chilly). That’s my new uniform, every day. In the evening, I put on pyjamas. I’m a classy lady. I made the mistake of reading an article entitled 40 things you can’t wear when you’re 40. It was full of very sensible advice about investing in quality cashmere, sturdy undies and classic sunglasses. But to be honest, it made me cross. Firstly, it assumed that I should have plenty of disposable cash at my age but, more to the point, surely I can wear whatever I like. If I want to plait my hair, carry an over-sized bag or wear Mary-Jane shoes (all complete no-nos at my age, apparently) then I will, whatever Ms 23-year-old Fashion Editor says. Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, aged 75, hasn’t quietly stopped wearing bold and brash, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour’s style is still admired by all ages, even though she’s 66. Kate Moss looks fabulous in almost anything – I’ve just seen pictures of her in a a dinosaur print jumper teamed with leopard print jacket and black fedora hat and she’s 42. Some people are effortlessly cool in whatever they wear. If I wore that, whatever my age, I would look like I’d got dressed in a jumble sale during a power cut. Yes, a boob tube and ripped jeans might be edging towards ‘mutton dressed as lamb’, but hey, I’m 44, and I don’t see why anyone should dictate to me thank you very much. So, if you happen to see me in white stilettoes or double denim then I’ve not lost my mind, I’m making my very own fashion statement. If I’m dressed in tie-dye and stripy tights, I’ve not joined a commune, it’s a rebellion. My new mantra is: ‘if it makes you feel good, then wear it’ even if that means a paisley shacket.
