Beware Of The Horrifying Gum Disease! Gum disease, or Periodontal disease is something people of all ages can have, kids, teens and adults alike are prone to this problem. This is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues surrounding a tooth, and is the number one cause of tooth loss and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the tissues in the mouth and potential precursor of gum disease. Gum disease is typically caused by a buildup of plaque on teeth and along the gum line. Plaque is a sticky coating containing bacteria. The immune system tries to get rid of plaque with an inflammation response. This is seen by the redness and swelling of the gum around the tooth.

Everyone has a range of bacteria in their mouth. Plaque is constantly being formed by some of these bacteria when they feed on the sugars in the food and drinks you consume. Plaque provides the perfect environment for the bacteria that can cause gum disease to live and multiply. There are things that cause gum disease and these things can be corrected and controlled. Incorrect dental hygiene is one of the elements of gum infection because if plaque is not removed

through dental hygiene practices and regular visits to the dentist, bacteria may start to cause gingivitis which eventually result to gum disease. Another example is like when you have medical conditions that affect the body’s ability to produce sugar may contribute to periodontal disease. Medications used also to treat medical conditions may produce the overgrowth of gums. Overgrown gums are more susceptible to bacteria and followed by gum disease. Metabolism and hormone levels if someone is pregnant is also considered to cause gum disease. Puberty and menopause may also affect the organic balance in the mouth and make teeth prone to gum disease. Bad breath may be a symptom of gum disease and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as eating foods like garlic that have a strong odor. Tooth decay, indigestion, smoking, or metabolic diseases like diabetes, are also leading causes. A bacterium on the human tongue which is spread from other parts of the mouth is also a component of bad breath. The primary source, however, is often odorcausing bacteria that can lead to undiagnosed gum disease. Unhealthy gums provide a medium for these bacteria to reproduce and multiply. If you notice a persistent bad taste in your mouth, or that people move away from you when you talk with them, a likely culprit is gingivitis, which if not treated can advance to periodontal gum. Treatment for gum disease normally can be done with good oral hygiene like brushing the teeth properly at least twice a day and flossing once a day. A dentist may recommend a visit to a dental hygienist for a more thorough clean to remove any hardened plaque called tartar. Visit the dentist for gum care as often as they recommend in order to help prevent plaque build-up in the future, ask the dentist for oral hygiene tips and recommendations for types of toothbrushes, floss, interdental brushes and mouthwashes.
