Every year, wildfi res destroy vast areas of semi-arid regions. As of early November 2019, over 100,000 hectares of land were burn in California alone, according to Cal Fire and the US Forest Service. This summer, the Guardian reported that “Spain battled biggest wildfi res in 20 years immense amounts of forest to fi re each year. Higher than average temperatures and periods of drought are increasingly causing wildfi res in the UK as well. On page 60, Rab Easton advises the forestry sector on how machinery can be adapted to allow for a quick response in case of wild fi res. The photo shows a group of fi refi ghters performing a burn out operation in a shaded fuelbreak at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. Over fi ve days, the fi re grew to over 80,000ha.
