uiero compartir hoy con usted una noticia que nos llena de orgullo por lo que tiene de recompensa al trabajo bien hecho y que nos ilusiona por lo que supone de compromiso y proyección para el futuro más inmediato. Air Nostrum ha sido la compañía ganadora del concurso de servicios de promoción turística de Vigo convocado por el Concello. Que se haya valorado la candidatura de Air Nostrum por encima de las de otras aerolíneas que concurrían al concurso público me satisface especialmente porque habíamos puesto mucho empeño en que nuestra oferta fuera competitiva y su adjudicación nos da nuevos ánimos en esta etapa en la que parece atisbarse la luz al final del túnel de la crisis económica en España. En la práctica, esta adjudicación implica una serie de contraprestaciones publicitarias y de promoción de Vigo como destino turístico, así como la puesta en marcha en los próximos tres años de ocho rutas nacionales e internacionales que tendrán a la localidad gallega como origen o destino. Nuestra apuesta por la ciudad olívica se va a ver reforzada con conexiones a Londres, Roma, Bruselas, Sevilla, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Málaga, Alicante y Menorca, que vendrán a unirse al enlace con Bilbao que operamos actualmente. Este abanico de destinos facilitará a los vecinos de Vigo sus viajes pero además ayudará a fomentar la llegada de turistas a una tierra que en mis visitas siempre me ha sorprendido por la diversidad de sus atractivos. He disfrutado de su gastronomía, tanto de sus productos del mar como de sus carnes, sus quesos y sus vinos. También me parece muy recomendable callejear por su casco viejo o acercarse a las parroquias próximas para disfrutar de escondidas joyas del románico. Pero desde luego, tengo para mí dos imágenes que condensan la belleza de la ciudad: la visión de la inmensa ría de Vigo desde el Puente de Rande y las Islas Cíes, que atesora la que el periódico The Guardian considera la mejor playa del mundo. Nuestra aerolínea se ha unido este verano a la campaña de petición para el reconocimiento de la singularidad de las Islas Cíes. En este empeño hemos bautizado a una de las aeronaves con el nombre de Islas Cíes comprometiéndonos a apoyar la solicitud para que la Unesco declare Patrimonio de la Humanidad este paraje natural que les invito a visitar con nosotros.

his month, I am pleased to share with you some good news. This good news is that our Company recently won a public tender convoked by the municipal authorities of Vigo for promoting tourism. We are, of course, excited at the prospect of this new commitment and the challenge it represents. I am especially pleased that our candidature was chosen from a list of other candidatures given the great efforts our whole staff went to to make our offer as competitive as possible. This important award provides motivation to work even harder now that there seems to be some sort of light shining at the end of the tunnel of what has been one of Spain’s most important economic crises. In practice, this award means the introduction of a series of publicity and promotional campaigns promoting Vigo as a first-class tourist destination and the launch, over the coming three years, of eight national and international flight routes to and from this beautiful Galician locality. As part of our wager on the city of Vigo and its surroundings, we shall be reinforcing its flight network with flights to London, Rome, Brussels, Seville, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Malaga, Alicante and Minorca in conjunction with the present flight service to Bilbao. This new flight destination network will not only provide residents with easier access to other flight networks, but will also attract tourists to a land which has every time I have been there managed to surprise me with, amongst other things, the diversity of its tourist offer. I have enjoyed many good meals in Vigo, thanks to its excellent fish, shellfish, meat, cheese and wine products. I would say that a relaxing stroll around its Old Quarter and nearby neighbourhoods full of beautiful Romanesque architecture is well worth it. The views I will never forget, however, are the ones of the immense estuary of Vigo from the Rande Bridge or Cies Islands, the latter of which has, according to the British newspaper, The Guardian, the best beach in the world. This summer, Air Nostrum joined the campaign requesting the Cies Islands be declared a World Heritage Site by the Unesco. As part of this support, we have christened one of our aircraft, Cies Islands. We are happy to provide support for such a noble cause and trust the Unesco will not take too long before its makes up its mind.

Sobre mesas de piedra al aire libre, las ostreras abren con destreza mágica las ostras de la ría, en un bailar de platos que no cesa y en un ambiente que suena a romería.

With a maritime soul and vanguard spirit, Vigo is much more than its stunning beaches and seafood platters. It is a city with character. It is beautiful, not because of its perfect features, but because of its irresistible personality. Visitors will soon find themselves pleasantly trapped in the labyrinth of cobbled streets and steep slopes that make up the old fisherman’s district known as O Berbes, leading up to Mount Castro where the Celts decided to settle over 2,000 years ago. From the lookout on the walled top of this spectacular mount located as previously mentioned in the heart of the city, visitors will enjoy the same remarkable panoramic views of the estuary as the first settlers here did. A landscape of extraordinary synergy where nature lives in harmony with industry, cranes, trees and small boats, new and old, that is Vigo.

Delicious local dishes include a magnificent selection of pies, its popular barbecued fillet steak and mouthwatering Octopus a la Feira. Fish and shellfish lovers will find themselves in seventh heaven here. The Port of Vigo stands out as Europe’s largest fresh fish port and provides local markets and restaurants with first-class fresh food produce. Visitors should look out for the gastronomic spectacle that can be seen every day in the “calle de las ostras” (street of the oysters). Here, oystercatchers spend their time opening, as if by magic, the estuary’s famous oysters which they serve on stone tables in the openair in a never-ending festive dance of plates.

UN MAR DE NATURALEZA Que no le engañe el perfil industrial de la ciudad: sin salir del centro urbano podrá disfrutar de la naturaleza siguiendo senderos naturales por el monte de O Castro o perdiéndose en las inmensidades del Parque de Castrelos. Pero si está dispuesto a ir un poco más allá, le esperan grandes recompensas: Vigo está “atrapada” entre la cadena de parques forestales que la rodea por tierra y el Parque Nacional de las Islas Atlánticas que la cerca por mar. Solo este entorno natural único puede combinar hermosos caminos hasta playas y faros con rutas de senderismo e itinerarios en bici con vistas espectaculares. Siempre con el mar de fondo.

Sea of nature Visitors should not be misled by the city’s industrial profile as it is possible to enjoy nature here thanks to its Mount Castro nature routes and magnificent Castrelos Park. There are rewards for those willing to travel beyond the city limits, since Vigo is surrounded by beautiful forest parks and the famous Galician Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park. The city’s unique natural environment combines beautiful nature tracks with beaches and lighthouses and hiking and cycling routes with spectacular panoramic views with the sea always in the background.

UN MAR DE NOCHES Gente cálida. Clima suave. Conciertos, rutas de marcha. La noche es larga y si se quiere no se acaba. Sea la hora que sea encontrará una zona en la que terracear, salir de copas y bailar. Vigo aún conserva el espíritu rebelde de la Movida musical de los años 80 y tiene rutas para todos los gustos y edades. En un radio relativamente pequeño encontrará sitios tranquilos, locales con música en directo, bares de ambiente, pubs y coctelerías chic, locales retro o indie, discotecas y after-hours. A primera hora, visite el Casco Vello o la zona señorial de la Alameda y las terrazas de Montero Ríos para empezar con una ruta de tapas y vinos. Para ambientes más independientes está Churruca, donde Vigo se viste de rock e indie. Pero si lo que le gusta es bailar, ya sea música latina, comercial o electrónica, su noche pasa por la glamourosa zona de Areal. Y como casi todo en Vigo, las noches más largas también van a dar al mar. Una alborada en la playa puede ser el mejor final para una noche que se resiste a acabar.

UN MAR DE CULTURA Conciertos, teatro, galerías, museos, festivales… y hasta un yacimiento arqueológico celta en pleno centro. Tendrá siempre un mar de actividades que hacer cuando visite Vigo. En el corazón de la ciudad está el Museo de Arte Contemporánea, MARCO, que está situado en la calle peatonal y comercial por excelencia, a Rúa do Príncipe, caminando por la cual se llega a la recientemente inaugurada pinacoteca municipal. Desde el centro también se puede dar un paseo por las calles más señoriales, Policarpo Sanz y García Barbón, cuya arquitectura es un vestigio del apogeo de la burguesía local de finales del siglo XIX. Marcando esta ruta arquitectónica encontrará varios de los edificios más emblemáticos de Vigo, como el antiguo Teatro García Barbón, el Centro Social de Afundación, o la Casa das Artes, que ofrecen exposiciones gratuitas. Si quiere saber más sobre Vigo y la cultura gallega, le proponemos el museo etnográfico Liste y el municipal Quiñones de León, ubicado en un pazo o casa tradicional de la nobleza gallega de hermosísimos jardines. Vigo cuenta también con un Museo del Mar, situado en un enclave privilegiado con vistas a la ría, y el VERBUM, un museo interactivo sobre la comunicación humana, perfectos ambos para ir de visita de camino a la playa.

Sea of night Friendly residents, a mild climate and live concerts, clubs and discotheques all promise an entertaining nightlife here. Whatever the time, day or night, visitors will find a wide variety of terrace bars, pubs and places to dance. Vigo has managed to maintain that rebellious spirit of the popular 80s musical movement, providing something for everyone. In a relatively small area, it is possible to find places ideal for relaxing, live music, different kinds of bars that include chic cocktail bars, pubs, discotheques and a number of after-hour establishments. The Casco Vello (Old Quarter), stately Alameda area or the terrace bars at Montero Rios, ideal for a ‘tapas’ and wine crawl, are all worth a visit. We would also mention the Churruca area, famous for its rock and indie bars. Dancers whether looking for commercial, salsa or electronic music, should pay a visit to the glamorous Areal area. And as with nearly everything in Vigo, the sea also has a lot to do with the city’s nightlife offer. In fact, watching the sun rise at the waterfront could be the best end to a night that does not seem to want to end.

Vigo offers its visitors a magnificent variety of concerts, theatre, exhibitions, museums, festivals and even a Celtic archaeological site, all in the city centre, an authentic sea of cultural activities. Visitors should not miss a visit to the Contemporary Art Museum on the Rua do Principe in one of the city’s most important commercial and pedestrian areas. It is also possible to find the recently inaugurated Pinacoteca Municipal Art Gallery here. While here, visitors should also take a stroll down stately streets such as the Policarpo Sanz and Garcia Barbon streets whose architecture belongs to the golden era which took place at the end of the 19th century. Some of Vigo’s most emblematic buildings include those that house the Garcia Barbon Theatre, Afundacion Social Centre and ‘Casa das Artes’, well known for its programme of free exhibitions. Other sights worth mentioning are the Liste Ethnographic Museum and Quiñones de Leon Municipal Museum located in the 17th-century Castrelos ‘pazo’, a Galician country manor surrounded by beautiful gardens with 18th-century fountains and ponds. Both museums provide visitors with interesting information on Vigo and the Galician culture. Finally, visitors must not miss a visit to the fascinating Galicia Sea Museum situated on the shore of the beautiful Vigo estuary or the Verbum Museum, also known as the House of Words, a fascinating interactive museum that looks at the different aspects of human communication.

Victoria Padial “Conseguir las primeras medallas para el biatlón español ha sido un sueño” “Winning the first medals for a Spanish biathlete is a dream come true”

Victoria Padial (Granada, 1988) es el ejemplo de que cuando algo se quiere con todas las fuerzas y se pone esfuerzo y dedicación en ello, todo se puede lograr. Pese a comenzar tarde su andadura en biatlón, a los 19 años, el duro entrenamiento y la constancia del día a día la acercan cada vez más a la élite mundial. La granadina afincada en Francia presume orgullosa de haber traído a España las primeras medallas de la historia en esta modalidad, y las que vendrán.

Victoria Padial (Granada, 1988) is the example of when you want something with all your heart you strive and dedicate yourself to it in full, you can achieve it. In spite of starting late in biathlons, aged 19, her hard training and daily perseverance have taken her closer to the world’s elite. The Granada born biathlete, living in France, is proud of having won the first medals in the history of this sport for Spain, with more to come.

¿Cuándo comenzó su afición por los deportes de invierno? Todo empezó cuando tenía 6 años, mi tío Javi tenía un club de esquí de fondo en Granada en el cual comencé a practicar esta actividad con la familia y muchos amigos. Se generó un ambiente muy bonito y saludable del que sigo enamorada. ¿Qué modalidad practica? ¿En qué consiste? Estuve practicando esquí de fondo hasta los 19 años y entonces decidí probar algo nuevo, el biatlón. Esta modalidad combina el esquí de fondo con el tiro con carabina. Consiste en esquiar lo más rápido posible con una carabina de tres kilos y medio en la espalda y, con el pulso acelerado, parar a disparar a un blanco situado a 50 metros de distancia. Las posiciones de tiro son tumbado y de pie, todo ello con los esquís puestos. Cada fallo en el tiro tiene una penalización de 150 metros de esquí o de un minuto adicional de tiempo dependiendo de la prueba (sprint, persecución, individual, salida en masa y relevos). Es un deporte muy emocionante por la multitud de factores que influyen en cada competición, físicos, psicológicos, técnicos, meteorológicos, etcétera. Hasta que no entra en meta el último biatleta no hay nada definido.

When did your love for winter sports being? It all started when I was 6 years old, my uncle Javi had a cross-country skiing club in Granada where I started skiing with my family and lots of friends. There was a great, healthy atmosphere which I fell in love with and still am. What discipline do you do and what does it consist of? I was cross-country skiing until I was 19 years old and then I decided to try something new – biathlon. This discipline combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. It consists of skiing as fast as possible with a rifle weighing three and a half kilos slung across your back, and then, when your pulse rate is high, you stop to shoot at a target 50 metres away. Shooting positions are either prone or standing, with your skis on. Every time you miss a target you have a 150 metre skiing penalty or one minute added to your time depending on the type of contest (sprint, pursuit, individual, mass start or relay). It’s a really exciting sport due to many factors that influence each competition: physical, psychological, technical, weather, etcetera. No winners are declared until the last biathlete crosses the finish line.

INTERVIEW ENTREVISTA Actualmente vive en Francia, concretamente en Autrans, ¿es mejor para su preparación? Vivir en Francia durante la pretemporada me permite progresar más rápidamente en una disciplina muy técnica en la que me inicié con 19 años. He tenido que compensar mi comienzo tardío con un entrenamiento muy específico en el tiro. Autrans es un paraíso para mi entrenamiento físico y también para mi entrenamiento de tiro por las duras condiciones meteorológicas con las que tengo que combatir a diario en el campo de tiro. ¿Qué es lo que más añora de España? La familia para mí es muy importante, uno de mis grandes apoyos para lograr todos mis objetivos, y se echa mucho de menos. Mi ciudad, Granada, cada uno de sus rincones mágicos, la Alhambra, la playa, la montaña... En definitiva la cultura familiar y festiva de Andalucía es algo que añoro profundamente. De sus logros deportivos, ¿cuál recuerda con mayor emoción? Siempre recordaré la temporada pasada. Conseguir las primeras medallas para el biatlón español ha sido un sueño. Sin duda el fin de semana del campeonato de Europa fue muy emotivo. Compartir podio con grandes naciones de biatlón como Noruega, Rusia o Suecia fue muy especial. ¿Cómo es un día en la vida de Victoria Padial? Comenzamos a las siete con un desayuno fuerte, después dos o tres horas de entrenamiento físico con tiro en momentos de esfuerzo, la clave está en disparar pocas balas pero con objetivos concretos. Tras la comida siempre duermo una siesta y por la tarde tengo sesión en el gimnasio, estiramientos y entrenamiento psicológico. A las nueve estoy de nuevo en la cama, para mí el descanso es fundamental para poder aguantar la carga de entrenamiento que me espera cada día. ¿Qué objetivos tiene para esta temporada? Consolidarme regularmente en el top 40 de la copa del mundo en la que luchamos 100 biatletas en cada prueba. Otro objetivo para esta temporada es clasificarme para una salida en masa, prueba en la que solo participan las 30 mejores de la copa del mundo. ¿Qué gustos y aficiones tiene? La música no puede faltar en mi vida, me encanta bailar. You are currently living in France, in Autrans. Is this better for your training? Living in France during the off-season means I can make more progress in a very technical discipline that I started when I was 19. I have had to make up for my late start with very specific shooting training. Autrans is a paradise for my physical training and for shooting because of the hard weather conditions I have to fight daily on the shooting range. What do you miss most about Spain? Family is very important for me, they are the people who have supported me to help me achieve my goals, and I miss them a lot. My hometown, Granada, is one Spain’s magical places with the Alhambra, the beaches, mountains… Basically the family culture and cheerfulness of Andalusia is something I miss sorely. Which of your sporting achievements was the most emotional for you? I will never forget last season. Winning the first medals for a Spanish biathlete was a dream come true. The European championship weekend was undoubtedly very emotional. Sharing the podium with the great biathlon nations like Norway, Russia or Sweden was something very special. What is Victoria Padial’s daily routine like? We start at seven o’clock with a big breakfast followed by two or three hours of physical training with target practice during moments of major effort, the key being to shoot just a few bullets but with very specific objectives. After lunch I always have a nap and in the afternoon I work out in the gym, stretching and mental training. By nine o’clock I’m in bed again, because for me resting is fundamental to be able to cope with the hard training that awaits me every day. What are your goals for this season? To consolidate my position in the top 40 in the world cup where 100 biathletes compete in each event. Another objective this season is to qualify for the mass start discipline, where only the 30 best in the world cup actually start the event. What are your hobbies? Music cannot be missing from my life, I love dancing, and when I rest I love watching films back-to-back on the sofa, going for a walk, but I am happiest when we have a family gettogether. The most simple things in life are what I like most. Could you tell us an anecdote related to your sport? Well, believe it or not I have to sell calendars through my website to be able to represent Spain in the biathlon world cup. I always say “where there’s a will, there’s a way…” and if you have a smile on your face, everything will go much better. You often fly with Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM. What aspects about the company would you highlight? Punctuality and customer service, meaning that it is always a pleasure to fly with the company.

The ruins of the shipwreck, located some 7 kilometres to the east of the city of Melilla, included, amongst other things, part of the sunken craft’s keel, nine 340 cm. long cannons, three reed anchors each measuring three-and-a-half meters, a number of nine pound cannon balls, an ancient pulley and a variety of small cannons. Meanwhile, Melilla stands out as an exceptional destination for underwater fishing enthusiasts. Indeed, the North African Mediterranean coast is one of the most beautiful spots for this type of activity being considered home of a larger variety of fish species than the European coastline.

Y si la costa melillense presenta atractivos submarinos, los deportes náuticos también tienen un escenario perfecto en su litoral. La ciudad ha alcanzado reputación como anfitriona de la Semana Náutica Ciudad de Melilla, en la primera quincena del mes de agosto y catalogada de Alto Nivel por la Real Federación Española de Vela. En la actualidad, el Puerto Deportivo Noray ofrece a los usuarios toda clase de servicios. Situado al sur de las instalaciones portuarias, dispone de capacidad para amarrar 339 embarcaciones deportivas y de recreo (de esloras entre los 6 y 24 metros). Para los que les gusta el baño tranquilo o las actividades propias de playa, Melilla cuenta con dos kilómetros de costas de arena muy fina, bañada por las seguras aguas del Mediterráneo. Las playas de Melilla han sido galardonadas por la Unión Europea con la bandera azul que confirma su calidad, además de estar certificadas con la “Q” de calidad turística. Una de las excursiones que no puede dejar de realizar es la que empieza en el Cabo de Tres Forcas y Kelaya, península en la que se sitúa el macizo montañoso del Gurugú y la albufera de Mar Chica. En Kelaya hay que visitar las diferentes, pequeñas y luminosas calas como Tramontana, Puntanegri o Charranen. Unas son de finas y doradas arenas que hacen las delicias de los aficionados a la pesca o a las actividades subacuáticas; y otras están llenas de restos históricos de culturas que por allí pasaron, como el Atalayón o Cazaza, donde desembarcó el último Rey de Granada, Boabdil “El Chico”.

The prevailing winds of Melilla are another important element here. Fish species include the Grouper, Pollock, ‘Sarguito’ (a common local fish species) and Golden Bream, some weighing as much as 3 to 5 kg. We would mention that marine excursions are also popular here. Home of a host of first class nautical sports, Melilla has earned itself an excellent reputation as host to the Melilla Annual Regatta Week which takes place each year during the first half of August. This event is presently catalogued as one of the Spanish Royal Sailing Federation’s most important sailing events. On the other hand, the local Noray Yacht Club is renowned for its wide variety of outstanding services. Situated south of the city port, it provides, amongst other things, 339 moorings for sporting and recreational craft (with overall lengths of 6 to 24 meters). For visitors looking for a relaxing day out at the beach, Melilla has two kilometres of fine sandy beaches bathed by the gentle waters of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. Its beaches not only fly the famous European Union Blue Flag for quality, but also hold Q for Tourist Quality certificates. Finally, visitors will not want to miss a trip to the Cabo de Tres Forcas and Kelaya region, home of the famous Gurugu Mountain and Mar Chica. Kelaya is the site of a number of small picturesque coves such as the Tramontana, Puntanegri and Charranen coves. Fishing enthusiasts and scuba divers will discover all kinds of golden sandy inlets guaranteed to fulfil their expectations. Some might even be lucky enough to come across archeological remains left behind by ancient visitors in areas such as Atalayon or Cazaza where the last King of Granada, Boabdil el Chico, is said to have landed.

Adventures in Melilla The counterpoint to Melillaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coastline is, without a doubt, the desert. For those looking for excursions into the desert, Melilla is the ideal departure point for a number of these types of excursions. The Rif region is one of the most popular areas for a round day trip into the desert thanks to its easy accessiblity. As Europeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s closest city to the desert, Melilla offers visitors all kinds of exciting excursions to nearby oases, sand dunes and palm groves as well as to a number of North African cities. After a few days enjoying the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marvellous multicultural society, Modernist architecture and North African aromas, it might be time for an adventure into the desert. A compass, some leather boots, spare motor parts, maps etc. along with a list of supplies all play an important part in the preparation of a trip into the Morrocan desert. Most of these will start off with a journey to the beautiful Figuig and Tafila oases, situated just six hours from Melilla. Se trata del faro de Portopí, en cuyo interior guarda la Exposición de Señales Marítimas, que recoge dos décadas de trabajo de recopilación, restauración y conservación por parte de los técnicos en ayudas a la navegación, de diversos materiales, documentos y utensilios relacionados con los faros y las señales marítimas de las Islas Baleares.

n 2014 se han cumplido diez años desde que estos materiales se expusieran por primera vez al público. Para celebrarlo, la Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares (APB) celebró unas jornadas de puertas abiertas el 13 y 14 de septiembre pasado, coincidiendo con los actos festivos de la Diada de Mallorca. Entrada libre, visitas guiadas a la exposición, escenificación de los hitos históricos más importantes y para los más pequeños actividades lúdicas, como juegos populares y cooperativos, talleres de chapas, de nudos marineros, de banderas y de construcción de faros. Todo para la diversión y descubrimiento del fascinante mundo de los faros y “percibir la magia que se siente en su interior”, como describió el presidente de la APB, Alberto Pons, durante la celebración de las jornadas.

n 2014 the exhibition celebrates ten years from when the exhibits were put on display to the public for the first time. To celebrate this event, the Balearic Isles Port Authority (APB) held some open doors day on 13th and 14th of September, coinciding with the festivities of the Diada de Mallorca. Entrance was free with guided tours around the exhibition, highlighting the most significant historical milestones, and for children there were fun activities such as popular and cooperation games, sheeting workshops, sailor’s knots, flags and lighthouse construction activities. This was all related to the fund and discovery of the fascinating world of lighthouses and “to feel the magic inside a lighthouse”, as the APB President, Alberto Pons, described it during the workshops.

an sido ya varias las zonas productoras de vino, en España y a nivel internacional, las que han solicitado ser patrimonio de la Unesco. Hay una de ellas que reúne unos condicionantes especiales para ello, la zona productora de Utiel-Requena. Recientemente, apoyándose en datos científicos, se puede atestiguar que es la primera zona y más antigua productora de vino de la Península Ibérica. No en vano el yacimiento de Las Pilillas, el pilar más importante del Proyecto Territorio Bobal, tiene probada una antigüedad de 2.700 años, o lo que es lo mismo, que en la zona se hacía vino en el siglo VII a.C. También ofrecen el mismo resultado cronológico los estudios arqueológicos realizados sobre la cerámica encontrada en la zona. Pese a que muchos se quedan solo con el título de la canditura ‘Territorio Bobal’, que hace referencia a la variedad autóctona mayoritaria en esta comarca, éste es uno de los valores añadidos al proyecto pero no el más importante. Las elaboraciones de las bodegas de la DOP Utiel-Requena con esa variedad tinta se están ganando un creciente prestigio a nivel internacional, con galardones muy notables en los concursos más importantes del mundo. Una de las personas que más empeño ha puesto es Carmen Pérez que, además de directora gerente del Instituto Valenciano de Conservación y Restauración, es autóctona de la zona y también se sigue sintiendo agricultora. «Tenemos una gran ventaja que nos hace ser optimistas y es el hecho de contar con el yaci-

One of them meets the special conditions required for this, namely the Utiel-Requena production area. Recently, backed by scientific data, proof has come to light that this was the first and is the oldest wine-producing region in the Iberian Peninsular. Not surprisingly therefore, the archaeological site “Las Pilillas”, the most important in the Territorial Project “Bobal” has been dated back 2,700 years, or what is the same, that the region was already producing wine in the 7th century before Christ. The archaeological studies carried out on the ceramics found in the area also lead to the same chronological results. In spite of many only remembering the title of the candidature “Territorio Bobal” (Bobal Territory), which is the name of the native variety most commonly grown in this region, this is only one of the added values to the project, but by no means the most important. Production by wineries under the Utiel – Requena Protected Appellation of Origin making this red wine are earning growing prestige internationally, with notable awards in some of the world’s most important contests. One of the people who has made the biggest efforts in this field is Carmen Perez, who, in addition to being the General Manager of the Valencian Institute for Conservation and Restoration, is a native of this area and still feels she is a farmer. “We have a great

Entre los primeros hay que situar «la autenticidad, la perdurabilidad en el tiempo durante todos estos siglos y que el paisaje es único y especial», señala. En contra, apunta Carmen Pérez, «el que España sea con Italia el país con más bienes culturales patrimonio de la Unesco».

The road we have taken will be a long journey, taking between 2 and 6 years, but Perez is convinced that the project has more aspects in its favour than against it. The former include the “authenticity, the way it has lasted down the centuries and the unique, special landscape”, she points out. Against it, she remarks “the fact that Italy and Spain are the countries with most Unesco cultural heritage assets”.

Las Pilillas

El yacimiento de Las Pilillas es un asentamiento íbero considerado como el centro productor de vino más antiguo de España. Ubicado en el margen derecho de la rambla de Los Morenos, próximo a la pedanía de Los Duques (Requena), contiene grandes bloques calizos en los que desde finales del siglo VII a.C. se excavaron lagares para el pisado y la extracción del mosto que, con la fermentación, se convertiría en vino. Se trata de dos pilas a diferente nivel y comunicadas por unos orificios que permiten que el mosto pase de la pililla superior a la inferior para su recogida y fermentación. «Todo el complejo entorno al lagar se organizó en función del transporte de la uva y la elaboración del vino por medio de potentes terrazas que permitieron salvar los desniveles de la ladera», señala la arqueóloga Susi Pérez. En cuanto a la elaboración de vino, los primeros testimonios arqueológicos que permiten hablar de producción en la península se encuentran en L’ Alt de Benimaquia y Pilillas, pero sólo aquí existe un complejo creado exclusivamente para la producción de vino. En resumen, que la quimera no lo es tanto y los datos científicos parecen respaldar el hecho de que el vino de la península naciera en esta comarca. El expediente está en marcha, ahora es el ministerio correspondiente el que debe tomar el guante y defenderlo en Europa. Será entonces cuando la Unesco tome la palabra.

Las Pilillas archaeological site is an Iberian settlement considered to be the oldest wine-producing centre in Spain. Located on the right side of Los Morenos ravine near the hamlet of Los Duques (Requena), contains some enormous limestone blocks which were hollowed out to form pools around the end of the 7th century before Christ for crushing the grapes and collecting the must, before it was fermented and made into wine. There are two “pilas” (hollows) at different levels with holes in the wall of the top one which allowed the must to flow into the lower one where it was collected and fermented. “The entire complex around this area was arranged in accordance with the way the grapes were transported and the wine was made using terrace farming techniques to exploit the hillsides” points out the archaeologist Susi Perez. As for wine-making itself, the first archaeological records that allow us to talk about wine production in the Iberian Peninsula were found in L’Alt de Benimaquia and Pilillas, but it is only here where there is a complex that was exclusively built for wine production. In short, this is not a chimera, but rather something backed by scientific data indicating that wine in the Iberian Peninsula was first made in this region. The process is underway, and now it is the relevant Ministry who must take up the challenge and defend the case before Europe. Only then will Unesco make a decision.

Another perfect option for those with children is the Aramón Cerler ski station with nearly 80 kilometres of ski slopes surrounded by peaks soaring to over 3,000 metres high and which rise defiantly above the skiers as another jewel of the Aragon Pyrenees. There are slopes for all skiers and even the smaller ones will have a great time at the different facilities with the activities specifically designed for them: a new snow garden, two skity areas with slides, an igloo and mini climbing wall, a family area, the Nievelandia area, the new children’s slope under the theme “The Enchanted Forest” and a mini snowspeed circuit where the younger members of the family will be able to test their skills on skis. Una presencia en auge en la que Hyundai ha consolidado su propuesta automovilística con una creciente gama de productos específica para el usuario local. Éste es el caso de la nueva generación i20. El utilitario compacto coreano se ha diseñado y desarrollado en Europa bajo cuatro conceptos clave: un espacio interior líder en su clase, la incorporación de funciones de mejora del confort, alta tecnología y un diseño diferenciador.

Una auténtica revolución que se observa en una nueva carrocería que adquiere ciertos tintes de monovolumen gracias al mayor espacio del montante posterior. De esta manera, con una longitud de 4,03 metros —4 centímetros más que su antecesor— y una también agrandada distancia entre ejes, el i20 presenta unas cifras líderes de habitabilidad sin por ello perder un dinámico y atractivo aspecto exterior. En este sentido cabe destacar la ganancia de capacidad de maletero, con un volumen de carga de 326 litros que pueden ampliarse hasta los 1.042 si se abate por completo la fila de asientos posterior. The new i20 range is structured around four levels of finish, known as Essence, Klass, Tecno and Style. ¿Cómo inició su interés por la música? Empecé muy jovencita, a los cuatro años. Primero empieza como un juego, un acercamiento a la música como cultura general. A medida que vas caminando por ella se va conformando un amor infantil, algo especial. Al tiempo que fui conociéndola se transformó en algo consciente, en algo en lo que quise canalizar todos mis esfuerzos.

How did your interest in music start? I started very young, when I was just four years old. It first started as a game, an approach to music as general culture. As I started discovering music it became something I started to fall in love with, something very special. The more you get to know music it becomes an awareness, something where I could channel my efforts.

¿Qué cualidades ha de tener un buen director de orquesta? En estos tiempos tan complicados no es suficiente, aunque sí necesario, tener una técnica exquisita y depurada. El director es un líder que tiene que tener altas dosis de pasión y compromiso. Tiene que potenciar las aptitudes de su equipo, que son los músicos. Una orquesta es un organismo vivo que evoluciona; debemos entender la superación como un reto. Al fin y al cabo somos todos trabajadores que estamos orientados por y para el público.

What qualities should a good orchestra conductor have? In such complicated times it is not enough, although it is necessary, to be have exquisite, refined technique. A conductor is a leader who has to be passionate and committed. You have to get the most out of the abilities of your team, who are musicians. An orchestra is a living body that evolves. We have to understand endeavour as a challenge. After all, we are all workers who perform for the public.

¿Ha cumplido todos sus sueños profesionales? Si tienes en tu vida la máxima que cada concierto es “el concierto” uno mira adelante con la ilusión diaria de sorprender al público. El pasado se ve con cierta nostalgia pero el futuro se ve como un reto continuo. Yo disfruto mucho con el camino que me lleva hacia los objetivos y cada concierto es un paso.

Pablo Martinez from Jumilla recently won first place at the 6th National Iberian Ham Carvers Contest held at the La Ferradura Restaurant on the Patacona Beach in Alboraya (Valencia). Sponsored by Air Nostrum, the Santander Bank and SH Hotels, second place in the contest went to Juan Blas from Alicante and third place to Diego Ferreras from Seville. The awards were presented by Francisco Torreblanca and Susi Diaz with the collaboration of a number of other famous gastronomic professionals.

It is located in the mansion of the Counts of Ayamans, popularly called Ca la Gran Cristiana. The tour of the museum shows the visitor a time tunnel to know the history of Majorca.

Pablo Martínez, de Jumilla, resultó ganador del 6º Concurso Nacional de Cortadores de Jamón Ibérico, que se celebró en el restaurante La Ferradura, en la playa de la Patacona de Alboraya (Valencia). El concurso, que cuenta con el patrocinio de Air Nostrum, el Banco de Santander y la cadena SH Hoteles, tuvo como segundo clasificado a Juan Blas, de Alicante, y en tercera posición a Diego Ferreras, de Sevilla. Los premios fueron entregados por Francisco Torreblanca y Susi Díaz, entre otros profesionales de la gastronomía.

Está ubicado en la casa palacio de los condes de Ayamans, llamada popularmente Ca la Gran Cristiana. El recorrido del museo permite al visitante adentrarse ‘en el túnel del tiempo’ y así conocer la historia de Mallorca.

The Art of Our Time: Masterpieces from the Guggenheim Collections celebrates 20 years of partnership between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. This exhibition, which echoes the museum’s inaugural presentation in 1997, reveals how the collections of the Guggenheim constellation of museums have grown and flourished over the years, and it also traces the how the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has evolved into maturity as an international exemplar.

The MAMAC collections, with nearly 1.200 works, illustrate the key role of Nice in the development of groundbreaking movements from the 1960s and 1970s to the present. The Museum hosts many temporary exhibitions. Closed Monday.

En una rueda de prensa presidida por el alcalde de la localidad, Abel Caballero, el director Comercial de Air Nostrum, Juan Corral, ha detallado la operativa de la compañía en Vigo. En los tres próximos años se podrá volar con Air Nostrum desde Peinador a nueve destinos diferentes, lo que convertirá al aeropuerto vigués en el tercero de la aerolínea por número de rutas.

isfrutar de un amanecer en África a 35.000 pies de altura, identificar cada isla de Baleares desde la ventanilla de un CRJ-900, contemplar una puesta de sol en la Ría de Vigo cuando el vuelo enfila la pista de Peinador... Querido pasajero de Air Nostrum, no siga leyendo, haga memoria durante unos segundos y piense en el mejor momento que ha vivido a bordo de un avión, ese recuerdo especial que nunca olvidará. Le vendrá a la cabeza el inicio de aquellas vacaciones perfectas, la alegría ante un inmediato reencuentro en el aeropuerto o la mejor vista panorámica de su vida camino de un aeropuerto que todavía no conocía. Admito que juego con ventaja, yo dispuse de unos días para pensar en ese viaje especial que me gustaría contar en apenas 500 palabras y casualmente me encontré con uno de esos documentos a los que de vez en cuando nos lleva de forma aleatoria una búsqueda en nuestro ordenador. Así encontré una carpeta con el nombre “crucero2010”. Fotos y más fotos de un maravilloso viaje en barco desde el Atlántico al Mediterráneo. Lisboa, Portimao, Casablanca, Málaga… y al final de todo, un pequeño archivo con un vídeo grabado con el móvil. Al pulsar dos veces la imagen me di cuenta de que éste había sido, sin ninguna duda, uno de esos momentos irrepetibles. Era un vuelo Málaga-Madrid y aquellos dos rubitos, de 3 y 6 años, ya habían revolucionado a todo el pasaje (ustedes ya me entienden) antes de ocupar sus asientos. Aunque no se trataba de su primer viaje en avión, para ellos sí lo era de forma consciente y sin chupete. La emoción fue en aumento a medida que accedían por la puerta de embarque y eran recibidos por los auxiliares de vuelo de camino a su aventura. La imaginación permitió que confundiesen los reactores con misiles y los botones del asiento con instrumentos “turbo-bost”, pero todos los juegos se detuvieron de repente. El capitán anunciaba un viaje rutinario para el 90 por ciento de los pasajeros. Para ellos dos era una singladura interestelar que se ponía en marcha en la cabecera de la pista. Durante el siguiente minuto y medio, sostuve mi teléfono (modo avión, of course!) enfocando sus caras, recogiendo su mirada penetrante cuando el ruido de los motores aumentó y el avión comenzó a rodar por la pista. La nariz pegada a la ventanilla, los ojos como platos, la sonrisa nerviosa, las piernas dando pataditas al asiento delantero (sí, saben muy bien de lo que hablo) y la respiración contenida unos segundos hasta que, por fin, despegaban. Todo resumido en una inmensa expresión de felicidad cuando se elevaban por arte de magia en el aire. “¡¡Ya estamos volando, papá!!”. Hasta el infinito y más allá. ¿Recuerda aquel vuelo?

It turned out to be full of photographs and even more photographs taken on a fantastic cruise from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Lisbon, Portimao, Casablanca, Malaga etc. Tucked away, I found a small video that I had recorded with my mobile. I double clicked the file and realised I had stumbled onto what was undoubtedly one of those unique and incomparable moments aboard an aircraft. I had recorded it on a flight from Malaga to Madrid. Two little blonde kids, 3 and 5-years-old, who had already revolutionised (you get what I mean) the entire cabin before even getting to their seats. Although, it was not their first flight, it was on a conscious level and without a dummy. Their excitement grew as they made their way to the aircraft, met by smiling flight attendants, assisting them on this great adventure. Their imagination helped them mistake the jet engines for missiles and the aircraft seat buttons with “turboboost” instruments. They were suddenly stopped in their tracks. The flight captain was announcing what for 90 percent of the passengers was a routine announcement, but for them represented the beginning of an interstellar voyage. For the next one and a half minutes, I fixed my telephone (already on airplane mode, of course!!) on their faces, recording the look in their eyes as they heard the sound of the engines increase as the plane began taxiing along the runway. Their noses pressed against the window, eyes as big as saucers, nervous giggles, tiny swinging feet making contact with the seat in front (yes, you know exactly what I mean), holding their breath for a few seconds just as the plane lifted off. Everything suddenly resumed in the unforgettable expression of happiness on their faces as they found themselves being lifted into the air as if by magic. “We’re flying, Daddy!” To infinity and beyond.
