ITU & TRIATHLON HISTORY
a young, dynamic sport’s rapid rise to the olympic stage
The first recorded triathlon took place in San Diego, California on 25 September 1974. It was organised by the San Diego Track & Field Club as an alternative to the rigors of training on the track. The race, which took place in San Diego’s Mission Bay, consisted of a 5.3-mile run, followed by a 5-mile bike and a 600-yard swim in the bay. A total of 46 athletes finished that first race. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in 1989 as the world governing body for triathlon and has been headquartered in Vancouver, Canada ever since. A total of 30 National Federations attended the first ITU Congress in Avignon, France in 1989. Today there are over 140 affiliated National Federations. The ITU Triathlon World Cup Series began in 1991, staging 11 races in eight countries. The ITU World Triathlon Series was created as ITU’s top tier race series in 2009, staging multiple rounds in iconic cities across the globe. Triathlon was awarded full Olympic Games medal status by the IOC at its Congress in Paris in 1994, and made its debut in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
TRIATHLON’S OLYMPIC HISTORY Triathlon grew rapidly from its humble beginnings in San Diego and within a matter of years it became one of the fastest growing sports around the world. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was intrigued by the sport’s meteoric growth and in 1988 began discussions to include triathlon in the Olympic Games programme. Then IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch arranged a meeting in Stockholm that year with the intention of including triathlon in the Olympic Games as soon as possible. At that meeting, Canadian Les McDonald was selected as President to a working committee for triathlon, while Sweden’s Sture Jonasson was elected as Secretary. Triathlon was officially added to the Olympic programme by the IOC at its Congress in Paris in 1994. Triathlon made its official Olympic Games debut in Sydney, where Simon Whitfield and Brigitte McMahon stamped their names into the history books as the first gold medallists. In Athens, it was Hamish Carter and Kate Allen’s golden turn before Emma Snowsill and Jan Frodeno won the gold in Beijing. Overall, Australia is on top of the Olympic medal tally with a total of four. As well as Snowsill’s gold, Australian women have collected two silver medals and one bronze. New Zealand and Switzerland have three medals each, each with one gold, then Canada and Germany have two medals. Both of Canada’s medals belong to Whitfield. Austria, the Czech Republic and the USA currently have one medal each. A total of 13 athletes competed in each of the three editions in triathlon at the Olympics before London. In the men’s, Whitfield, Ivan Rana (ESP), Hunter Kemper (USA), Reto Hug (SUI), Tim Don (GBR), Andriy Gluschenko (UKR), Csaba Kuttor (HUN), Olivier Marceau (SUI), Juraci Moreira (BRA), Volodymyr Polikarpenko (UKR) and Filip Ospaly (CZE) all competed in Sydney, Athens and Beijing. In the women’s field, there were just two – Japan’s Kiyomi Niwata and Germany’s Anja Dittmer. In London, less than a handful of those athletes will join the revered four consecutive Olympic Games club: Whitfield, Kemper and Dittmer.

NEW FOR LONDON 2012 Penalty Box - The major rule change from Beijing to the London Olympic Games is the introduction of a penalty box. Time penalties may be given during the race for minor infringements such as equipment outside the designated box in transition, or early or late dismount from the bike. Before, athletes were shown a red card in transition and had to stop on the spot for the appropriate time, now time penalties incurred during the race must be served in a designated box on course. For a full list of infringements, see the ITU Rules at www.triathlon.org/about/downloads/category/competition_rules/
ITU WORLD TRIATHLON SERIES The ITU World Triathlon Series (WTS) was introduced in 2009, creating a series of world championship races rather than a single-day world championship. The series sees the world’s top triathletes competing head-to-head for rankings points that determine the overall ITU world champion, with media and fans able to watch from everywhere with a live international broadcast feed available from every event. The series has so far been staged in 14 of the world’s most amazing cities including Beijing, Budapest, Gold Coast, Hamburg, Kitzbühel, Lausanne, London, Madrid, San Diego, Seoul, Sydney, Tongyeong, Washington, Yokohama. This year the series travels to Stockholm and Auckland for the first time. A total of $2.06-million USD will be available for elite athletes racing the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Series, the first time the prize pool has topped two million since the series started.

qualification summary
THE JOURNEY TO THE OLYMPIC GAMES
There are a total of 110 spots in the triathlon events at the London 2012 Olympics: 55 men and 55 women. ITU’s international triathlon circuit, which includes the ITU World Triathlon Series (WTS), World Cups and Continental Championships, is where athletes competed for Olympic qualification. The qualification took place over a two-year period, from 1 June 2010 until 31 May 2012. Athletes collected ITU Olympic qualification points to secure a place for their country on the start line. With a total of 55 places in the men’s and women’s races, a maximum of eight National Olympic Committees (NOCs) could qualify three places. Other NOCs can qualify a maximum of two. The next step is for athletes to qualify for their country’s Olympic team based on the criteria set by their National Federations. The majority of Olympic slots are decided through the ITU Olympic qualification points list. National Federations can also gain spots if one of their athletes wins a Continental Championship, through the qualification and test event in London 2011, and through New Flag slots – in which the ITU awards berths to one country per continent, that would otherwise not have a slot.
In all, a record number of 39 NOCs had qualified spots at the triathlon competition for London 2012, the highest number ever for triathlon at an Olympic Games. In Beijing 2008, there were 36 NOCs that had qualified positions. Prior to that, there were 33 in Athens 2004 and 34 in Sydney 2000, although in those Olympics, there were 50 women and 50 men on the start lists. Among the 39 NOCs this year, five have qualified a spot for the first time in the history of triathlon at the Olympic Games, including: Ecuador, Mauritius, Monaco, Republic of Korea, and Slovenia. The eight NOCs that were able to qualify the maximum of three women were the United States, Australia, Great Britain, Japan, France, Germany, New Zealand and Spain. The eight NOCs that have qualified the maximum of three men are: Great Britain, Germany, Russia, New Zealand, France, Spain, Australia, and Canada. For more on Olympic qualification, please see www.triathlon.org/olympics/qualification.

SCHEDULE AND VENUE
55 WOMEN AND 55 MEN GO FOR GOLD AT HYDE PARK THE SCHEDULE
Women’s Triathlon – Saturday 4 August - 09:00 (Local time – GMT +1) Men’s Triathlon – Tuesday 7 August - 11:30 (Local time – GMT +1)
THE VENUE - HYDE PARK Acquired by King Henry VIII in 1536, the park was originally used a hunting reserve where deer were kept for the purpose of sport. King James I opened the park to the public in 1637 and it has since become one of the most popular places in the city to visit for locals and tourists alike. It covers over 350 acres in central London, and is home to a number of grassroots sports clubs, including the Serpentine Swimming Club, whose members swim in the Serpentine Lake whatever the weather – even on Christmas Day. Hyde Park will host the Marathon Swimming and Triathlon events at London 2012. Temporary seats will be built in June 2012 for spectators, and the course will be marked out. The park is also expected to be home to the music, theatre, film and cultural events that will take place throughout the summer of 2012.
THE COURSE Swim (1.5km) – The swim takes place in The Serpentine with a dive start from the swim platform placed on the north side of the lake. Athletes will swim one continuous lap, counter-clockwise. Bike (43km) – Athletes will transition on Serpentine Road and begin seven laps on the bike via South Carriage Drive towards Hyde Park Corner where the loop leaves Hyde Park to go down Constitution Hill to Buckingham Palace, then turn back up Constitution Hill and across Hyde Park Corner into Serpentine Road. They pass the transition area and grand stands on every lap. The bike course is generally flat with no climbs. A few speed bumps and tight turns make it technically demanding. The bike course is slightly longer than the usual 40km. Run (10km) – After the 7th bike lap, athletes will rack their bikes in the same transition area and start the 4-lap run toward West Carriage Drive and then back towards the southern edge of the Serpentine. The run takes them around the eastern part of the lake and back onto Serpentine road toward the finish line on the western edge of Serpentine Road.

Elite Women Great Britain’s Helen Jenkins couldn’t have planned a more perfect place for her first series win, running clear of the field in Hyde Park. Out of the 1.5km swim, a lead group of 34 women established a minute lead on a chase pack of similar size in the first lap. But that chase, led by Barbara Riveros Diaz (CHI), cut into that lead over the seven laps and eventually pulled even, resulting in about 50 women rolling into T2 together. From there, Jenkins set the pace and went alone for the final two laps to snatch an impressive victory and assert herself as the favourite for Olympic gold. Jorgensen clocked the fastest run split of the day to claim silver and along with an Olympic spot. In the battle for third, German veteran Anja Dittmer came through in the clutch to secure bronze, becoming the first triathlete to qualify for four Olympics Games. 1 Helen Jenkins (GBR) 2:00:34 2 Gwen Jorgensen (USA) 2:00:41 3 Anja Dittmer (GER) 2:00:49 4 Emma Jackson (AUS) 2:00:51 5 Emma Snowsill (AUS) 2:00:52 6 Andrea Hewitt (NZL) 2:00:54 7 Sarah Groff (USA) 2:00:58 8 Nicola Spirig (SUI) 2:01:04 9 Ashleigh Gentle (AUS) 2:01:07 10 Emmie Charayron (FRA) 2:01:10 11 Ai Ueda (JPN) 2:01:13 12 Barbara Riveros Diaz (CHI) 2:01:29 13 Svenja Bazlen (GER) 2:01:30 14 Jodie Stimpson (GBR) 2:01:31 15 Emma Moffatt (AUS) 2:01:37 16 Sarissa De Vries (NED) 2:01:37 17 Vicky Holland (GBR) 2:01:44 18 Aileen Morrison (IRL) 2:01:52 19 Rachel Klamer (NED) 2:01:57 20 Ainhoa Murua (ESP) 2:02:00 21 Kathrin Muller (GER) 2:02:05 22 Felicity Abram (AUS) 2:02:06 23 Gillian Sanders (RSA) 2:02:17 24 Laura Bennett (USA) 2:02:19 25 Irina Abysova (RUS) 2:02:20 26 Elizabeth May (LUX) 2:02:23 27 Katrien Verstuyft (BEL) 2:02:24 28 Kiyomi Niwata (JPN) 2:02:24 29 Paula Findlay (CAN) 2:02:34 30 Lisa Norden (SWE) 2:02:34 31 Melanie Annaheim (SUI) 2:02:35 32 Danne Boterenbrood (NED) 2:02:3

Elite Men Great Britain’s Alistair Brownlee stepped up to another incredible level when he used a gutsy bike breakaway to claim his tenth series career win. Brownlee broke away from the main pack with New Zealand’s James Elvery in the second lap of the bike and were eventually joined by Russia’s Alexander Bryukhankov and Spain’s Ivan Rana. That quartet kept pushing the pace until they had more than a full minute on the rest of the field coming out of T2. From there, Brownlee surged to the lead and never looked back, cruising to gold. Bryukhankov ran strongly to claim silver. Jonathan Brownlee won the battle for bronze against a group that included double ITU World Champion Javier Gomez and Beijing gold medallist Jan Frodeno. The younger Brownlee recorded the day’s fastest run to join his brother on the podium. 1 Alistair Brownlee (GBR) 1:50:09 2 Alexander Bryukhankov (RUS) 1:50:34 3 Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) 1:51:04 4 Javier Gomez (ESP) 1:51:16 5 Steffen Justus (GER) 1:51:25 6 Laurent Vidal (FRA) 1:51:27 7 David Hauss (FRA) 1:51:32 8 Brad Kahlefeldt (AUS) 1:51:40 9 Sven Riederer (SUI) 1:51:41 10 Vincent Luis (FRA) 1:51:41 11 Jan Frodeno (GER) 1:51:42 12 Maik Petzold (GER) 1:51:46 13 Dmitry Polyanskiy (RUS) 1:52:01 14 William Clarke (GBR) 1:52:05 15 Bevan Docherty (NZL) 1:52:06 16 Joao Pereira (POR) 1:52:06 17 Artem Parienko (RUS) 1:52:07 18 Tony Moulai (FRA) 1:52:08 19 Kyle Jones (CAN) 1:52:10 20 Joao Silva (POR) 1:52:20 21 Ivan Rana (ESP) 1:52:20 22 Ryan Sissons (NZL) 1:52:21 23 Simon Whitfield (CAN) 1:52:23 24 Igor Polyanskiy (RUS) 1:52:26 25 Manuel Huerta (USA) 1:52:30 26 Marek Jaskolka (POL) 1:52:39 27 Yuichi Hosoda (JPN) 1:52:39 28 Sebastian Rank (GER) 1:52:40 29 Reinaldo Colucci (BRA) 1:52:46 30 Bruno Pais (POR) 1:52:46 31 Brendan Sexton (AUS) 1:52:47 32 Adam Bowden (GBR) 1:52:48

a pair of surprises in triathlon’s olympic debut
The much anticipated Olympic debut of triathlon was staged under the shadow of Sydney’s famed opera house and was highlighted by a pair of surprise winners. Not only did triathlon announce its arrival to the world, the sport was given the honour of being one of the first events of the Sydney Olympic Games.
Women’s Competition – 16 September 2000 On the first day of competition in Sydney, 50 women dove into Farm Cove, the inlet just east of the Opera House. All eyes were on Aussie Michellie Jones, the heavy pre-race favourite who won the test event just five months earlier. As the women began the first triathlon in Olympic history, American Sheila Taormina emerged from the water first, almost 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. But the former swimmer couldn’t hold the lead through the entire bike segment and by the time the women headed onto the run course Jones was in front, much to the delight of the Australian faithful. However, gold for the home country didn’t come as expected and predicted. Instead it was Switzerland’s Brigitte McMahon who sprinted down the home stretch past the Opera House and into history as triathlon’s first Olympic gold medallist. Jones settled for silver, just two heartbreaking seconds behind McMahon. Magali Messmer made it a banner day for Switzerland, taking the bronze. All three women were on the podium together at the Sydney ITU Triathlon World Cup on April 16, which was contested on the same course.
Men’s Competition – 17 September 2000 After the world caught its breath and properly digested the huge upset of the women’s race, 50 men tackled the same course the next day seeking Olympic glory. Aussie Craig Walton had the locals cheering as he led the men out of the water. Right on his heels were a duo many predicted would clash for gold, New Zealand’s Hamish Carter and Great Britain’s Simon Lessing. But it was another Simon who came from nowhere to pull off the second stunner. Despite being down more than a minute off the bike, Canadian Simon Whitfield shredded the run course to move himself back into contention. With 800 metres to go, he was still 40 metres behind Germany’s Stefan Vuckovic. But with a final finishing kick that would define his career, Whitfield leaped across the finish line to win Olympic gold. He posted the fastest run of the day and was the only man to run under 31 minutes. Vuckovic held on for the silver, the very medal he won at the test event in April. Czech Jan Rehula claimed the bronze medal.

athens 2004 olympics
a pair of surprises in triathlon’s olympic debut
Amid the stunning beauty of Athens, triathlon exploded onto the Olympic stage for the second time in the sport’s history and the result was equally spectacular. In the women’s race, an established Aussie was predicted to win but was upset in an amazing sprint finish. In the men’s event, one of the sport’s all-time greats redeemed his Sydney disappointment.
Women’s Competition – 25 August 2004 The women’s race started as generally predicted with Loretta Harrop of Australia and the Americans Sheila Taormina and Barbara Lindquist leading the swim from early on. After Lindquist was dropped from the lead bike group, she was joined by teammate Susan Williams who used her incredible cycling skills to cut the gap. By the final lap, Harrop broke away and parlayed that into a 20-second lead on the run, ahead of three Americans. Leading the chase group out of transition was Kate Allen from Austria, followed by a stream of others. Harrop continued to look comfortable despite the 30 degree heat and maintained her lead through to the final lap. By the closing stages, it looked like Harrop had the gold wrapped up, but Allen had other plans. In a stunning turn of events, Harrop had the finish line in sight but Allen blew past the exhausted Aussie to win the gold by seven seconds. Coming across in the bronze medal position was an ecstatic Williams.
Men’s Competition – 26 August 2004 Despite the best efforts of the top swimmers, the bulk of the field remained in touch with the lead through the first stage of the race. A large group of athletes took off on the 40km bike stage within seconds of each other. Midway through the difficult five-lap bike course, a decisive breakaway group including New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty and Hamish Carter, Switzerland’s Sven Riederer and Oliver Marceau, and Frenchman Frederic Belaubre all pulled away from the main pack. This powerful group worked well together and built a significant lead. By the second transition the six leaders had a 30-second advantage of the rest of the field, and took that into the 10km run. Midway through the run, the group was whittled down to Carter, Docherty and Riederer and in the closing stages, Riederer dropped off the pace. Carter then kicked into another gear, leaving a spent Docherty trailing in his wake. An elated Carter went on to break the tape for gold, anchoring a gold-silver New Zealand performance with Docherty coming in second. Riederer just held on for bronze, ahead of a charging Greg Bennett from Australia who finished fourth.

snowsill dominates while frodeno stuns in thrilling finish The picturesque Ming Tomb Reservoir, just outside of central Beijing, played host to triathlon’s third appearance in the Olympic Games. And again, the races were a mix of upsets, with the men’s race again coming down to an electrifying sprint finish, and favourites securing medals.
Women’s Competition – 18 August 2008 The women lined up on the Ming Tomb Reservoir course in the scorching heat, and all eyes were on Australia’s Emma Snowsill and Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes. They were the among the greatest ever triathletes, and both entered as the heavy favourites to add that coveted Olympic gold to a impressive careers that already included World Championships and multiple World Cup wins. However, neither stood out in the first two legs, the USA’s Laura Bennett led the swim and helped lead out the first pack on the bike, but there wasn’t a huge break between the contenders through the tough 40km bike leg. But it was clear from the second transition that it was going to be Snowsill’s day, as she completely crushed the field over the 10km run. She ran home to gold by a whopping 66 seconds, the biggest margin of victory in Olympic history. Fernandes finished strongly for silver, and Australia’s Emma Moffatt claimed bronze to make it a brilliant day for Australia.
Men’s Competition – 19 August 2008 Reigning World Champion Javier Gomez went in as the favourite, but as seen before in Olympic history, the way the men’s race unfolded kept everyone guessing right until the end. While the pack stayed together in the swim, the tough and technical bike course saw a break. Mexico’s Francisco Serrano, Luxemboug’s Dirk Bockel, and Belgium’s Axel Zeebroek pushed off the front and while Serrano dropped off, Bockel and Zeebroek took almost a minute lead into the run. It didn’t prove enough to hold off the sport’s top runners as a young Brit, Alistair Brownlee, helped to reel them in. Spain’s Ivan Rana then attacked on the hill that leads back to the reservoir and only Gomez, Brownlee, Germany’s Jan Frodeno, Canada’s Simon Whitfield and New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty went with him. But Rana faded, followed by Brownlee and Whitfield, seemingly leaving the medals to Gomez, Docherty and Frodeno. However, Whitfield turned on his incredible finishing kick, regained touch and in the final 500 metres, took the lead. But in a thrilling final finishing chute rush, it was Frodeno who found the extra push to rocket past Whitfield and claim Olympic gold. It was, incredibly, his first ever ITU win. Whitfield held on for silver and Docherty for bronze – which was the second Olympic medal for each of them.

TRIATHLON MIXED RELAY TO DEBUT AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES AND ASIAN GAMES GLASGOW 2014 Commonwealth Games (23 July – 3 August) Triathlon will make its third Commonwealth Games appearance in Glasgow 2014. The sport made its Commonwealth Games debut at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, before also appearing in Melbourne in 2006. In Glasgow, action will take place in and around the Strathclyde Country Park on the outskirts of the city, for both the individual and mixed relay formats. The Triathlon Mixed Relay – where a team of two women and two men compete a relay – was added to the Commonwealth Games programme starting in 2018 at the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in St. Kitts & Nevis last November. However the format received a boost with a debut four years earlier than expected, after the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee included it on their programme.
Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (16 – 28 August) Triathlon will make its second appearance in the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, after being part of the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Japan’s Yuka Sato had the honour of winning the very first gold medal of the Games. New Zealand’s Aaron Barclay won the men’s race. Singapore also marked the Major Games debut of the Triathlon Mixed Relay. The teams in Singapore were composed of continental championship teams, in the end men’s Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist Alois Knabl (AUT) edged out the Youth Games champion Barclay (NZL) in a thrilling finish, claiming the YOG Team Triathlon gold medal for Team Europe 1. Knabl’s European squad included Eszter Dudas (HUN), Miguel Valente Fernandes (POR) and Fanny Beisaron (ISR).
17TH Asian Games INCHEON 2014 (14 September – 4 October) Triathlon will make its third Asian Games appearance at the Asian Games in Incheon 2014. The sport made its Asian Games debut at the 2006 Doha Asian Games and was also on the programme in Guangzhou 2010. Incheon will also see the Asian Games premiere of the Triathlon Mixed Relay. The format was added to the 2014 Incheon Asian Games in early 2011 after the Executive Board of the Olympic Council of Asia approved the programme, and it was the first major Games to include the new dynamic mixed format. The Asian Games is considered the second-largest international multi-sport event after the Olympic Games and Incheon 2014 will be the 17th edition.

paratriathlon to debut at the 2016 paralympic games Toronto 2015 Pan American Games (10 – 26 July) This will be triathlon’s fifth appearance in the Pan American Games, after it appeared in 1995, 2003, 2007 and 2011. Toronto is already a city with triathlon history as Canada’s largest citiy hosted an ITU World Cup in 2000 and 2001, and legendary ITU athletes Simon Lessing, Carol Montgomery, Simon Whitfield and Siri Lindley topped the podium in those years.
Rio 2016 Olympic AND PARALYMPIC GAMES (5 – 21 August) With the IOC announcement that Rio de Janeiro in Brazil will be the host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, triathlon started to look forward to returning a city and country which is steeped in multisport history. Having first joined the ITU Triathlon World Cup calendar in 1996, Rio de Janeiro established a significant multisport presence from the turn of the century with World Cup races in 2000, 2003 and 2004, a South American Games in 2002 and the Pan Am Games in 2007. The triathlon events at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will take in the world-famous Copocabana Beach on August 8th and 9th, 2016. Rio will also be the site of Paratriathlon’s debut in the Paralympic Games. Triathlon is a rare sport in which able-bodied athletes compete, side-by-side, with disabled athletes at both the national and international levels. ITU has supported the development of Paratriathlon for more than 15 years and has held Paratriathlon World Championships every year since 1995.
