EDITOR’S NOTE

I

TEN YEARS IN... & WE'VE NEVER BEEN BETTER

think back to the first year that Leslie & I bought this magazine. 2006. Ten years ago... We had just started dating, hadn’t even thought about marriage... just wanted to do something different. Leslie was tired of selling high end motor homes... I was sick to death of mortgages, cubicles and neckties. There was rumblings at the office that the real estate bubble was gonna burst. We had

a few bucks, we had our health & we both had a sense that we were meant for something else. So we pulled the trigger. Set into motion the journey of a lifetime. Not only did we re-launch Revolt In Style Magazine - but we also created the Revolt Summer Surf Series. Both businesses were run on shoestring budgets with grassroots guerilla marketing campaigns. Our first RSSS event included a handful of surfers on the beach with a homemade banner & a DJ on some rickety scaffolding. Our first issue was on newspaper stock & half the mag was printed in black & white, it was all we could afford. The surfers embraced us & the magazine was a blast - plus a great avenue to promote the events - we knew almost immediately that we were onto something. Meanwhile, we fell deeply in love. Got married & became each other’s best friends. We threw ourselves into our work. Partners in everything & enjoying every minute. The magazine was a great excuse to travel & promote & meet people from all walks of life. Each month Revolt In Style was created, printed & hand delivered to some 500 locations in SD. The surf series grew and we bacame one of the largest around, attracting surfers & media from around the globe. In 2008 we watched the economy implode & hung on tight to each other. We ran through our savings & sold off anything that was not absolutely necessary. We lost pretty much all the staff & had to print the magazine every other month. We moved a few times, had a few major health scares & even buried a few close family members. R.I.P. Shayla & John Krouse and most recently my dad, John Terhorst. We’ll miss you guys! Through it all, we stayed together. We continued to produce a magazine and a pro am surf series - year after year... some better, some worse, but always a constant. We never gave up on each other, or on the business. I’m proud to say, we’re still here & we’ve never been better. Now were looking at the start of season 10. First time in a few years that we have some big sponsors. Chevrolet has come in as title sponsor - Hodad’s will be our presenting sponsor. Gordon & Smith, Kicker Audio & Bud Light have all stepped up to help make these events great. Stay tuned for the RSSS Official After Parties. We also produce a Pro Am Paddle Race series on Mission Bay. Sunday Sunday Sunday Paddle Race Series has become one of San Diego’s premiere Pro Am sporting events, attracting athletes from around the globe. Isle Surf & Sup has taken title sponsor & our good friends from Westcoast Paddlesports will be our presenting sponsor this summer. So this is our business. We gather people. Wether it’s a gathering of newsworthy people in an issue of Revolt In Style or it’s a gathering of athletes & families at a competition - or even a gathering of friends at one of our after parties... we gather people. You are invited. I hope you can join us. www.revoltinstyle.com All the best Brian & Leslie

DESTINATION

TASTE

WHAT YOU LIKE FROM FIVE STARS, TO DIVE BARS....

We offer up these prime examples of San Diego’s finest grub & grog eateries

NORMAL HEIGHTS

BURNSIDE

BEST NEW NEIGHBORHOOD JOINT 3375 Adams Ave San Diego, CA (619) 501-7715

Burnside has re-opened in Normal Heights after a remodel & menu upgrade. Proprietor Nick Zanoni realized soon after opening, that the popular joint was just too cramped for his customers to truly enjoy themselves. He utilized the limited space (as only he & his team could) and came up with a totally new floorplan & bar - the eatery now has nearly double the seating capacity and re-emphasized craft beer program, with more taps and expanded bottle list. The restaurant (which also delivers food to drinkers at sister location, Sycamore Den) has a new revamped menu. A smoked meat makeover.... from barbecue champ Todd Johnson of the Bay Area’s Kinder’s BBQ chain and Gator’s Back Porch BBQ catering, ranging from brown sugar, pineapple and coconut marinated-baby back ribs to Southern-style barbecued shrimp Louie salad and grass fed ti-tip sandwiches. Johnson is house-making all of his barbecue sauces and smoking the meats — including turkey, ribs, tri-tip and more — in his commercial Southern Pride smoker. More at www.burnsidesd.com

DOWNTOWN SD

HODAD’S

BEST NEW BURGER JOINT 945 Broadway San Diego CA 92101 (619) 234-6323

Although downtown is a new location... HODAD’S has been making burgers since 1969 in Ocean Beach - Their website boasts, ‘WORLD’S BEST BURGERS’ & ‘Under 99 billion served’. Both claims may very well be true. If you’re in the mood for some ‘MAN FOOD’ (mouth watering, cheese dripping, over-the-top portions & icy cold libations) This is the joint for you. One of three locations, the Gaslamp Hodad’s is nearly as colorful, beachy and noisy as the Ocean Beach location. The smell of the grill will get the juices flowing even before you sit down. The industrial / surf inspired decor & open seating is all part of the fun, casual dining experience. The burgers are (seriously) as awesome as advertised. MAN sized & topped with any supporting condiment you desire & always grilled to perfection. The fries are hot & crispy - The onion rings have that ‘perfect’ crunch - the shakes are thick (with a scoop of ice cream on top) Everything in this place is delicious, huge and more than enough for two to share. Excellent food, great prices, super cool staff... all reasons to come & hang out. Five Stars! - see more at: www.hodadies.com

BREWS BROTHERS

SYCAMORE DEN

SHORE RIDER

OB NOODLE HOUSE

STONE BREWERY

Sycamore Den is an upscale, dad-channeling, ‘70s-style drinkery. Sporting a wall-towall retro environment including a wall of rifles, banjos & guitars, a huge fireplace, and oversized booths... very cool! The crack team of mixologist behind the bar offer a large selection of interesting, yet very drinkable, specialty craft cocktails.

Just what the shores needed. A casual lil joint, offering a straight forward menu of Californian cuisine including fresh fish, Ahi poke, salads, ceviche and more... all paired with local craft beer. (Yes, that’s an iced tea above... it was early.)

Have no idea why it took us so long to give this joint a try - Owner Steve has done it again with a second killer location in Ocean Beach on Cable Street.

Our go-to for all Liberty Station outings. 23,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor dining and Craft Beer indulgence, as well as a bocce ball court, outdoor cinema space and an 11,315-square-foot garden.

3391 Adams Ave San Diego, CA

Owner Nick Zanoni also of Burnside, just a few doors down (see previous page) now delivers their amazing food to his Sycamore Den guests. Happy hour: 5-7 p.m. Monday through Friday. 2168 Avenida de La Playa La Jolla Shores, CA 92037

Partners Dennis O’Connor (Thorn Street Brewery, Home & Away) & Darren Moore (La Puerta & The Alibi) put their experience & imagination to work, launching this cool new venue for the summer of 2016. Whether you’ve been surfing, kayaking, scuba diving, swimming with the local sea animals, or just relaxing, Shore Rider is an extension of the beach. Shore Rider offers great food, ice cold beer, tasty beverages, and cool tunes in an open air patio setting. Enjoy the sun, a San Diego beach vibe, and our warm hospitality. 2218 Cable St San Diego, CA 92107

Menu offers variety of appetizers, pho, vietnamese BBQ, egg noodles, fried rice, chow fun, vermicelli noodles, and sizzling plates. Taco Thursday offers you 3 Asian pork belly tacos for 8. Ridiculously good. Spicy Garlic Wings? Yeah, start with these bad boys & a cold Craft Beer. I also ordered (& thouroughly enjoyed) the Rare Steak & Well Done Brisket Pho - this place is the bomb - come see what the hype is all about! Over 41 beers on tap from around the world and the best sake in town! www.facebook. com/OBNoodleHouse

2816 Historic Decatur Road San Diego, CA 92106

SMACK! Executive Chef Thomas Connolly offers a creative menu of world-inspired cuisine, and the bar features 40 taps of exceptional craft beers, including Stone year-round and special releases - yes they even have beers from other small breweries. www. stonebrewing.com/visit/bistros/liberWWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM  17 ty-station

SOUND ADVICE

MUSIC

HEAR THIS

By Leslie Terhorst

EDITORS CHOICE - CAGE THE ELEPHANT - TELL ME I’M PRETTY Genre – Alt/Grge/Rock

Fourth studio album. Cage the Elephant have teamed up with producer and fellow musician, The Black Key’s guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach. In a new album trailer for Tell Me I’m Pretty, the clip gives viewers insight on the recording process between Matthew Schultz, Brad Schultz, Jared Champion, Daniel Tichenor and their friend and mentor, Auerbach. The behind-the-scenes clip boasts footage from Nashville’s’ Easy Eye sound studio recording session. Front man Matt Schultz explains, “A lot of the songs on the record were (recorded in) one take.” That was the one of the great things about working Dan, as a producer he’s really good at keeping you from over thinking things,” he added. The singer further credited Auerbach for having “an incredible knowledge of all sorts of obscure music” that the “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” musicians never heard prior. The Arcs and Black Keys member definitely left his mark on Tell Me I’m Pretty, most blatantly on the band’s latest Outkast-leaning single, “Mess Around.” Available 12/18/15

FOOFIGHTERS – SAINT CECILIA Genre: Rock

Saint Cecilia is the result of Grohl & Co.’s latest test: This fall, they decided to see if they could make a recording over the course of 11 days while hold up in an Austin hotel named after the patron saint of musicians. Unsurprisingly, they succeeded, walking away with five tracks that are as strong and focused as any on Sonic Highways. To celebrate, they released the EP for free as a “thank you” to fans and as a way to ask people to donate money to the victims of the recent terrorist attack on an Eagles of Death Metal concert in Paris. The songs sound surprisingly consistent considering the recording session would be a rush job for any other big-time rocker. Out now.

BRIAN FALLON – PAINKILLERS

Genre - Alt/Punk/Rock

PAINKILLERS marks the first solo album from Fallon, known far and wide as singer/ guitarist of The Gaslight Anthem, as well as such acclaimed outfits as The Horrible Crowes and Molly & The Zombies. Produced by studio superstar Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Frank Turner, Keith Urban), the album was recorded earlier this year at Nashville’s Taxidermy Studios with Fallon fronting a crack band that includes Walker, Molly & The Zombies bassist Catherine Popper (Jack White, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Willie Nelson) and drummer Mark Stepro (Hayes Carll, Ben Kweller, Jackson Browne). PAINKILLERS once again affirms Fallon’s elemental gifts as a songwriter and storyteller, booming with insistent imagery, narrative craft,

and the extraordinary emotional acuity that has informed his music since the very start. Available 3/11/16

SURF

WHO - SURFER/SHAPER Kevin Connelly

WHAT - Kurrently Classic WHERE - CHEVROLET Revolt COLLAB SERIES Summer Surf Series

Kevin was fortunate to learn his trade from some of surfing's modern legends. Skip Frye took him under his wing early on and laid the foundations of his shaping concepts and fundamentals. Later, with Skip's blessing, he accepted an offer from Larry Gordon of Gordon and Smith to join their team as a professional surfer and shape on the side.

Collaboration between Gordon & Smith Surfboards and Kevin Connelly. This new line of G&S boards brings a fresh approach, blending decades of proven design, with current modern outlines & foils.

After his time with G&S, a sponsorship deal brought him into Rusty Preisendorfer's stable of shapers and pro surfers. His time with Rusty was where he combined the concepts of glide and flow - learned from Skip, plus the finer points of the classic longboard from G&S, and combined them with modern outlines and foils. He recently reconnected with his roots, again setting up shop at the G&S factory where he currently shapes and collaborates with their team of great board builders & craftsmen...

Shhhhhhhhh Somewhere off the West Coast... lies this mysterious big wave break. We're sworn to secrecy regarding the exact location. A spot this magical needs to be kept on the 'down low'. On any big day there can be as many as... zero surfers... riding this mystery break. Chuck Glynn of Laird Standup & Brandon Rambo of Riviera Paddlesports catch it breaking up to 30' on this day. Perfect A-frames just sitting out there waiting to be ridden. Just goes to show you- if you're willing to explore, there are still undiscovered gems out there.

The Student and The Master

Interview with the Paddle Master Danny Ching by new student Erika Benitez

A

fter their equally impressive wins earlier this year at the HanoHano Huki Challenge in San Diego,

we invited our friends Danny Ching and Erika Benitez for a quick sit down (and paddle) at the Redondo Beach breakwater. The 'rising star' athlete took the opportunity to fire off some questions

towards her new coach - trying to learn the secrets behind one of the fastest paddlers on the planet.

"If I make a major mistake during a race... I own it. I think, "Ok, now I gotta live with it,

Erika Benitez: When did you first start paddling? Danny Ching: I actually started here in Redondo Beach. The first race I ever had I was ten. I raced a bunch of outrigger stuff - the standup didn’t come around until till 2008. Before then…outrigger, I did the Jr. Lifeguards, some of the prone stuff, some of the surfski… basically, I just grew up around here paddling. EB: Did you have an immediate passion for SUP or was it a process? DC: Kicking & screaming is how I like to put it. I paddled all the time & got to do all the fun things on the ocean. Playing, seeing the whales…stuff like that. But always on surf skis & canoes. A friend told me I had to try standup. So I did. It was harder & slower EB: How did you begin training? DC: I cheated. I joined a canoe club. My dad started the canoe club here in Redondo. He paddled, my mom paddled, my uncle paddled, my brother paddled… so I was like, I guess I’m paddling. Everyone else did little league & soccer. This is what we did in the summer. EB: What’s your favorite race to compete in? DC: I think as far as SUP… it’s the OluKai Race, 'cause it’s downwind… it’s short. It was more fun when I was much better at it. (he laughs) Now that Connor is super fast.. The other one… Whenever I do the outrigger, I do it every year - is the Molokai. Between Outrigger, surfski and the Standup… I’ll do like 4 or 5 a year. EB: What’s the longest paddle you have done? DC: In a Race? Usually around 40 or 50 miles. Mostly for the

outrigger stuff. For Stand Up… the longest one I’ll do is about 30. It just beats you up. EB: What other sports did you do before paddling? DC: Paddling has always been in there, but… I did Little League & Soccer… I was really good at soccer when I was younger. In High School I played Water Polo, Volleyball… joined the surf team… was on the Swim Team. Basically everything except baseball, football & basketball in High School. I had three guys in my grade that made the NBA. All 7 foot in high school.. I was like”Maaan, I’m not playing against you guys!” (we both laugh) They’d come down to the pool every once in a while & talk smack to the guys on water polo wearing Speedos. I’d say, “Get in the pool, I dare you” EB: Where would you like to paddle that you haven’t been yet? DC: Realistically I’ve been all over the place. With all the races & stuff. Australia & New Zealand… I love those spots. There’s some places in Europe I’d love to go, but I’ll wait till their summer. I’ve heard their winters are horrendous. EB: How did 404 come about? DC: Let me see…… My first Battle Of The Paddle I met my partner Greg Jensen. He basically came up to me after the race - I had gotten third & was super annoyed… I was thinking, ”I don’t even do this sport, I should be way better than everyone”… I kept losing my board to the beach & I had to keep swimming in & getting it, then kept catching everybody… He came up to me & said, “You should have won that race by a mile… If only you knew how to surf!” That was the first time I met him. He said he wanted to sponsor me for sunglasses.. and we should start our own company.

It was at a point in my life where I was thinking I should get a real job & do something with my life…. gotta pay some bills… still living at my mom’s house… yeah, I gotta do somethin’. So I called him back & said, “Hey, are you serious? Let’s figure this out.” Then it just kinda took off from the there. In January 2010 we made a single board. He funded it cause I didn’t have any money. And we sold it. Then we made another one. And we sold that…. and then we were able to make two! By the time we got to May, it was the Battle Of The Paddle & Hawaii. We could afford three boards & plane tickets out there. We stayed at a friends house. I won that race, I won the distance race & I won in California when we got back - then it just blew up from there. It was a risk, but I went to business school. EB: Let’s talk about the new boards coming out. DC: The V3 - The nice thing is… the design is super forgiving. The way Stand Up is all over the world, you can be in a freshwater lake doin a 200 meter sprint. You can go to Molokai & be surfing downwind. Between Greg & I we shaped something that’s super forgiving. It can be flat sometimes, It can be big & windy… everyone moves around a bunch, people stand in the wrongs spots… they’re looking for perfection. So, I just started thinking’ yeah know… It’s never perfect… in fact, it’s rarely good. You just gotta make it work. So, the V3 is the new board, we just did a bunch of different widths. The nice thing is… we have a lot of juniors on the team & we paddled with tons of different people. We told them, “Cut loose, figure it out” - they’d say, “when I stand here it doesn’t work” so I say “Great, then stand somewhere else!” - then they go “I found it!” When you weigh a buck ten dripping wet, that might be the spot… when you way 180… over here, please. The boards are really fun, you can take em anywhere. My favorite is straight out here at Redondo & check out the whales. EB: How do you get prepared for a race? DC: I think I’ve been racing for a little over 20 years now… from outrigger, surfski to swim competitions… If you don’t know what your doing, the biggest thing is just to have a basic routine. I know this works. You’re not going to win a race by being overly prepared but you can definitely lose it by not being prepared… you forget your water… you don’t have breakfast… Now, I’ve made enough mistakes to know I can wing it if I have to, but I always try to go with the basic plan. Make sure I get something to eat in the morning. Make sure I have something for the race. Another big thing is take a look going into race week. Be prepared. Even if that strategy is “Wow, I’m totally screwed.” I look at the race a week in advance. On Friday I gotta do this… When I wake up on Saturday I need be here by… oh, I gotta leave here by four to be in San Diego for the race… I better get to bed early. Instead of getting there… “Oh crap! WHAT DO I DO? It’s too late!” So, I just get a basic plan… & then always have a ‘Plan B’.. 'cause that’s usually your plan (we laugh) “This isn’t my paddle…uh oh!" (we laugh harder) I've done that at OluKai three years in a row! Another thing for me, is just being relaxed & being calm. Recognizing

“Whoa... I did seven races this year & two of them were just for practice… I’m over it! So now I’m back own to one or two a year… It’s fun again!’ that there aren't any races here that are all out, flat out speed. They're all long enough where... you can make mistakes... & still be in contension. If I make a major mistake during a race, I own it... I think, "Ok, now I gotta live with it & I better make up for it somewhere else."

most is: the harder the race gets, the more I enjoy it. Not because I actually enjoy the race... I like the strategy. I like watching the other competitors trying to deal with the suffering... all the while, I'm thinking... "Man this isnt even as hard as Saturday's practice"

EB What do you like most in a race? DC: When I was younger I liked the downwind stuff, just bcause it was more fun. But now I've noticed the thing I like
