essence, freedom means being able to work without being subjected to the will of others, and living life the way it was intended we should live it. One cannot be truly human without being truly free. Thousands of individuals have fallen fighting for this precious right. And yet it is still difficult to define precisely the limits of where freedom begins and ends. We may be free to go to the moon, free to go around the world, or free to live at the bottom of the ocean; but that kind of freedom has its limits. Revolutionart pays tribute to the meaning of freedom, transforming this edition into a memorial to all those men and women who have fought to win it. While in today’s world the majority of us enjoy freedom, there still exist many places around the world where slavery has not ended and remains a reality. This edition also features an exhibition I have prepared in honor of those who were deprived of this right in the concentration camps of Auschwitz. Through these images, I hope to connect visually with the viewer and show all the torment lived through in the concentration

camps, while at the same time creating a space for reflection regarding similar crimes that have been committed in other parts of the world. Auschwitz is just one example of dozens of similar horrors that have been perpetrated. When we have freedom we can create, think, work and express ourselves. And here we are using the pages that follow in order to exercise that magnificent opportunity. I hope you enjoy this edition.

AUSCHWITZ PROJECT TESTIMONIALS OF HORROR TO NEVER FORGET

This is a tribute to the victims not only of the Holocaust, but of all mankind’s atrocities. This is a call to reflection, so that these horrors are never committed again, and so that it is universally understood that freedom is the most important right we possess, after the right to life.

TOKYO HOTEL STORY by Nathalie Daoust

For the project Tokyo Hotel Story, Nathalie Daoust continues her exploration of the female form and sexuality. Spending several months in the Alpha Inn, Japans largest S&M ‘Love Hotel’, Daoust has photographed 39 dominatrixes in their private rooms. Daoust regards the Alpha Inn as a stage for human desire and S&M as the mere expression of a need to dream, fantasise and escape. The resulting images transform the darker, grittier factions of society into a narrative that is symptomatic of our time. Nathalie Daoust’s photographs reflect a love for random places and a wild, inexhaustible sense of inquisitiveness. Exploring, experiencing and documenting rarely visited landscapes and carefully hidden hotel rooms, Daoust spent the last decade producing voyeuristic insights into these otherwise veiled existences.
