Editor’s letter Celebrating Scottish heroes. Welcome to the revolve magazine Scotland. We recognise the uniqueness and power of the Scottish brand. To this end, we provide a magazine that celebrates the real heroes of business, the entrepreneurs and small In the coming months, this magazine will demonstrate real life example of small business owners that have their work life balance under control. Similarly, we will feature the many challenges faced by small business and the outcomes. Revolve’s goal is to create an online Community that adds value to every member simply by recognising the co-brands that exist in every Hamlet, Village, Town and City across Scotland. Success is not only financial but can be measure according to each individual’s unique goals. The magazines are the face of a rich media web portal that incorporates social media in a manner that enables businesses to communicate directly with their existing customers, or the wider consumer bases (local, regional or international). My message is one of empowerment and maximizing. I thank all of the contributors to this publication and assure you that your articles will be well received. Revolve agree that the road from small business startup to success is long and challenging, but do not agree with the statistics that suggest only 5% of small businesses survive after two years of startup. We however accept that the small business journey is never direct. It includes highs, lows and major set backs. In your small business you will have unexpected challenges on the road to achieving success. Always use these experiences as motivators...

Scottish satorial

elegance

O

nce upon a time, sartorial elegance meant men wore suit, ties and women wore hats and dresses below the knee. Success in business was also associated with sartorial elegance.

Now a new breed of entrepreneurs have redefined the meaning. Sir Richard Branson of Virgin, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou owner of Easyjet and others choose not to wear a tie and can be seen in jeans and casual wear during meetings with the cream of society and business. The misconception amongst small business owners and indeed numerous consumers, that sartorial elegance is reserved for the rich and famous does not apply any longer, Sartorial elegance has been redefined and is now an individual’s choice. Some also think it refer to suits only. Females too can enjoy sartorial splendour – irrespective of occasion and style. Sartorial style rages from jeans, formal and casual wear shirts and shoes. Scotland’s fashion goes far beyond Tartan and the kilt, the national dress of Scotland. In every issue, we will feature advertorials on the movers and shakers in the Scottish fashion industry (from the outer Hebrides to the Scottish borders) . Scotland also offers first-rate educational opportunities in the fields of fashion design, textiles design, clothing design and manufacture, .Edinburgh College of Art is a hot-bed of fashion design and is famous for its dazzling annual fashion shows. . And the Scottish Borders Campus of Heriot-Watt University, is recognised as a leading centre in textile design, textiles and clothing technology and fashion. 1. I AM THE CAPTAIN OF MY SOUL

AUDENTES FORTUNA LEVAT Revolve is a repayment vehicle that comes into effect at the end of March 2012 and an example that despite the short sightedness and lack of integrity of some former Cameron Farley clients, Stephen can demonstrate real leadership and exercise his duty of care despite the challenges encountered. Prior to September 2nd 2008, Stephen was of the opinion that people were victims of their own circumstances. Now he realises, as demonstrated by the Cameron Farley saga, that sometime, people can be victims of abuse of power, lack of integrity and downright bullying. To this end Revolve include a support mechanism for marginalised individuals and groups. Stephen Farley states, “Read my full declaration in the English issue of Revolve magazine as a prerequisite of entering any discussions with Revolve”. An example of the challenges faced by Stephen include harassment such as Craigan Harvey Lingwood and his wife (former Cameron Farley clients who reside in the Perth area of Scotland) wrote on their facebook page that “Stephen farley was a cxxx and how dare he was to show his face”, in response to the launch of Revolve Magazines in January 2012, Stephen believes that Phillippa Hann, Jeffrey Morrison and their colleagues of Clarke Wilmott LLP solicitors for the FSA Action Group moderated by a Martin Popham are empowering Craigan Lingwood and others to disregard the rule of low. Stephen’s concerns are the blatant perverting the course of justice and will serialise in upcoming issues of Revolve Magazines that a blind eye is being intentionally paid to the rule of law, at the highest levels. Stephen urge the Scottish public to keep open minds and allow him to serialise the un-sanatised facts of the Cameron Farley story in upcoming issues of the Revolve Magazines. 14 | Revolve Magazine Scottish Edition

You notice I did not use the word Only losers fail, challenges is a natural component of successful outcomes. Too many small business owners treat their business like a hobby, while others lack marketing and sales skills or the ability to learn from the mistakes of others.

Remember to upsell to existing customers and practise vertical and horizontal integration of your products and services to increase unit sales per customer. Remember, you cannot be an expert at all things. Outsource and get professional help on a continuous basis.

THE REVOLVE CHALLEGE

T

he most common barrier to tackling the risks of environmental pollution for most businesses is the associated cost. Revolve is no different. However, we are being proactive and will generate the setup cost of rolling out six sustainable recycling plants across the UK from advertising. The morals of the Revolve story: Never change your goals, but sometimes you have to change your strategy. To transform tyres that end up in landfills and illegal dumps into environmentally friendly alternatives. To also collect and recycle secondary metals – both ferrous (iron and steel) and nonferrous (such as aluminium and copper). It is not only about recycling. It’s about reinventing. Revolve’s goal is to contributes directly to the reduction of environmental pollution through responsibly disposing and recycling end of life tyres and other scarce materials. Like most businesses, we face the challenge of meeting the financial cost of providing viable recycling solution. Rather making excuses, relying on grants and dealing with the politics of some agencies, we have identified business opportunities made possible by social media. These opportunities enable us to meet the cost of our recycling efforts without incurring debt. Our offering goes beyond recycling. It is about empowering and rewarding the real victims of environment pollution. We put initiatives in place that have a direct impact on the people most at risk to environment pollution in local communities: consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere. Furthermore, Revolve pro actively promote the public interest by encouraging ☑ Community participation, and voluntarily contribute to the financial cost of our designated ☑ Community interests.

We embrace the guidelines setout by the European parliament: Pollution should be prevented or reduced at the source, Pollution that cannot be prevented should be recycled in an environmentally safe manner Pollution that cannot be prevented or recycled should be treated in an environmentally safe manner, Disposal or other releases into the environment should be used “only as a last resort” and should be conducted in an environmentally safe manner. The objective of the project is to bring together small businesses and social aware consumers with a common goal of reducing the risk of environment pollution caused by economic activity. Social media is also a fantastic minimal cost option that small firms have available to celebrate social programs and duty of care standards email: advertorial@yourevolve.uk.com |

ISTIC APPROACH Revolve's objective is to develop sustainable end of life materials supply chains that are reliable, provide access to quality stocks from suppliers and transfer good legal title.

Sustainability is integral to Revolve’s strategy End of life material

management is not something that exists in isolation, but is part of a more holistic approach to the problem of

waste, which can become a “resource that offer additional revenue streams if sustainable recycling is put into practice. Collectively, consumers and small business can make a significant impact to end of life material management and must encapsulate social awareness, as most consumers now prefer to deal with providers that actively tackle the risk of environment pollution. Small business is no exception, as waste is a natural by-product of economic activity, therefore any business that create waste has a duty of care to ensure that it does not pose a direct or indirect risk to UK communities. email: advertorial@yourevolve.uk.com | 27

Engaging and interacting with Scottish Communities

COMPENSATING CONSUMERS FOR THE SUPPORT GIVEN TO THE REVOLVE PROJECT. evolve uses imagination and proactivity to develop ways to compensate consumers for the risk of environmental pollution (a natural by-product of small business performing economic activity) in their local communities. Revolve recognises that charities are at the heart of local communities and well qualified to transfer such benefits to residents. We have teamed up with selected charities (that successfully deliver public benefits and strive to maintain public confidence) Each good cause reflects one of our ☑ Community challenges, and the diversity of racial, ethnic, and economic interests across Scottish communities.

R

It is important that the public can clearly see the benefits our good causes bring, including their ability to be a voice for genuine, lasting social change. We purely provide exposure in our monthly magazines and donate 5 pence (to be shared across the designated good causes) in the pound of all net revenues we generate in Scotland. Our strategy ensure accountability, transparency and is a reliable method to ensure that a true cross section of the local communities benefit for their exposure to the risk of environment solution caused by SMEs performing economic activity in one or more local communities. We use social media to raise awareness about reducing the risk of environment

pollution across communities. Business owe a duty of care to the local communities in which they perform economic activity, while consumers can individually contribute to the cause. Enabling good causes to have a stronger voice

LINKING ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL GOALS Small business owner permeate every social strata and are a fitting measure of social values across lifestyles and communities. The Revolve Magazines aim to test the Insight Social Value Groups (UK) study of UK social values and change. Revolve’s strategy to create sustainable social value by recognising the parallel factors that link economic value with social value. Revolve’s focus is UK wide and is representative of current social trends driven by the social media revolution. Revolve is of the opinion (and hopeful) that the social aware UK consumers will create a heightened awareness and join the discussion about the risk of environment pollution in their neighbourhoods. There is sadly numerous disagreements on how to integrate environmental and social goals, further complicated by a disregard of the opportunity costs, and political strategies that fail to impact the grass roots communities. Revolve advocates empowerment as a strategy to firstly raise awareness, reduce conflict and most importantly manage and eliminate the risks of environmental pollution firstly: 1. Small business owners and their direct employees and 2. The people who live and work in grass root communities 3. Social media is the perfect low cost channel to generate synergy amongst diverse social groups, grass root communities, service providers and governments. www.revolve.uk.com

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Positive mental attitude is 9/10 of the law of fitness and well being

R

evolve advocates changing the paradigm of social care. The current system is structured as a tool to maintain the power bases of those administering the support. There is no accountability for resources, which translate a a fiscal budget deficit that is easily reduced. Give a man some seed, the tools and a plot to grow his own wheat and he not only feeds himself, but realises that he can not only grow for his consumption, but can engage in free enterprise by selling surplus to generate an income. Revolve recognises the role of small business and leads by example by donating 5 pence in every pound of net profit across our designated good causes

Purchasing decisions Revolve recognises that children’s now influence most family purchasing decisions and account for the highest average spend on mobile phones with purchases including realty television shows voting and text messages

Raising awareness

Revolve identifies this trend as a viable strategy for raising aware about the risk of environmental pollution in Scottish communities. The issue of children’s influence in family purchase decisions was often overlooked, but is beginning to attract the attention of marketing professionals. Revolve believes that small business should recognise these trends. In each issue of Revolve Magazine, we review research and evaluate whether small business incorporate this research into their marketing and advertising strategies. Our goal is to identify the Scottish small businesses that focus on this important buying pattern and monitor future research. www.yourevolve.co.uk

Combatting Stress Indian Head Massage Massage has been used for centuries in many different cultures around the world. Massage is effective in the treatment of many ailments and in today’s modern, commercial and very stressful world it is a proven stress buster. Having worked in a very stressful environment myself I know all too well the symptoms of stress and the negative effect stress can have on your body and mind. Not to mention the effects that being

stressed can have on your family and home life. Clients come to me with various symptoms ranging from aching muscles to stomach ulcers. Rarely do clients acknowledge that they have most likely brought these symptoms upon themselves. I believe that every thought that comes into your mind (negative or positive) will manifest itself in your physical being. We are unlikely of course to be able to simply put an end to whatever is causing us the stress or to the negative thoughts that bring on these ailments however we can arm ourselves with the tools to help fight the stress and negative thoughts. I find an effective massage for combating stress is Indian Head Massage as the treatment not only works on your body but can also have positive effect on the mind. The treatment can be given in a lunch hour as it lasts just half an hour, which makes it an excellent treatment if time is limited. It is given with the client seated on a chair making it very portable. The client can therefore be given the treatment in their office or their home. The name suggests that we are purely working on the head and whilst this is a significant part of the treatment we are also working on the upper back, which is an area that many people can carry tension. We also work on the upper arms, neck and face. The treatment can be given with or without the use of oil, although I always recommend that the massage is given with oil so that the client is benefiting from the properties of the oil being used. Once the client is seated and comfortable, I carry out a ful consultation, including medical history, and a lifestyle questionnaire, to establish what we need to gain from the treatment. It should be noted that Massage of any kind should be used in conjunction with orthodox medicine and is not used

instead of. Once we have decided what we are looking to achieve from the treatment, oil is applied to the client and the treatment is completed focusing on the areas of concern. In a general massage we work over the back, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. Clients have many different experiences ranging from feeling generally relaxed to having outbursts of emotions such as laughter. Ultimately the client will draw from the treatment what they need at that time both emotionally and physically. Depending on the client, they may choose to have an Indian Head Massage only when they feel that they need it whilst others come on a weekly or monthly basis, as they feel better placed to deal with situations when they have regular treatments. As a guide, some of the benefits that can be expected from this type of massage include reduction of muscle spasms and adhesions in the muscle fibres, hair growth is promoted and many clients report back to me that the condition of their hair has improved. The condition of the skin is also improved, generally leaving it feeling more relaxed, balanced and calm. It can elevate the mood of the client especially if the client has been feeling low. Treatment cost is ÂŁ25 for half an hour. Treatments can be booked by contacting me on:

How To Become A Well-Being

A Definitive Guide to Super Human Status by Iain R Bell, Director Executive Fitness Foundation. Iain is a health and lifestyle consultant with two decades of experience and 30,000 individual client sessions.

It seems like the truly unattainable, the mystery of our existence – how to be healthy, fit and well. Truly a journey, not a destination. We all expect a quick fix, however, our personal approach must be long term well being and keeping our thought process ‘health conscious.’ Our Western living now reflects a number of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes and raised blood pressure. Such profiles result in decreased levels of activity, poor dietary habits and ineffective use of our precious leisure time. email:ef1global@hotmail.com |75

How To Become A Well-Being

O

ur personal barometer for health is normally measured by our feel good factor. If we experience energy and positivity then life is great. However, if we are tired, immune system running low and a cold or flu dragging us down then we start to value our well being status.

We are all unique and are all too concerned with working harder than smarter. To ease the journey I have compiled the most effective short term changes you can make to boost your vitality and fend off burnout. Start with some self assessment - reviewing your health should not be taxing. Start with easy, small steps and progress carefully. It’s all about recognising the need to change and the sensible steps forward with your commitment.

How To Become A Well-Being

Energy boosts;

recognize what is bringing your ‘umph’ down – almost certainly processed foods (high in salt and sugar) and top loading; eating 60% or more of your calories in the evening after work rather than during the day☑

The 6 o’clock rule;

No eating after 6pm. (You’ll lose pounds of winter insulation☑) In the morning your body will pine for nutrition so its quality museli, fresh fruit salad, porridge and a nice cup of reviving tea. Mid morming, some seeds and nuts with dried fruit and when lunchtime comes a monster salad, plenty of green tea and water. Late afternoon, some protein such as a packet of sliced meat with some more seeds and nuts. Huge glass of water, as daily levels should be 2-3 litres as your flushing and re-hydration strategy.

TV Ban; Choose you TV

and computer windows carefully. Vegetating on the sofa is fine for a rest but unproductive if you’re stuck there all night. Stimulate your intellect with a book, documentary or some exercise. Go out for a brisk walk and no debating about it☑

email:ef1global@hotmail.com |79

By Iain Bell of Executive Fitness Foundation

Exercise;

We have over 600 muscles and over 200 bones and joints. Reality dictates we are designed for physical activity, not sofa surfing or jammed behind a desk. We can all run a marathon or climb a mountain but if you start with a power walk with a friend you feel the magic of your heart, lungs and muscles all working in symphony and when you get home you will feel energized and wallowing in achievement☑

Vitamin and mineral supplements;

Connecting mind and body;

Mild cleaning and detoxing the body; Inactivity and poor eating habits all generally

Never underestimate being physically fit and on a mental high. At the beginning of any exercise session whether it be yoga, a jog in the park or a tried and tested gym session you will create positive brain chemistry…guaranteed☑ Principal stress hormones such as catecholomines cannot exist in the presence of exercised educed endorphins. Endorphins are released and a clear head and mild ‘high’ result, every time. Smiling is achieved with ease☑

80 | www.ef1.com

Even the most savvy of nutritionists will recommend some supplements. Our food is designed for flavour and energy, not nourishment and nutrition. A multi mineral and vitamin dose once a day will work wonders as will a multi omega 3,6 and 9 oil especially for a healthy heart and joints. Don’t bust the bank, go for special offers and award winning products. Above all, you must take them with food and especially effective when taken with a high fibre cereal, milk or a hearty bowl of porridge with nuts and fruit. You’re on to a winner.

result in the consumption of acidic or acid forming foods. Processed, oily, sugary and salty food which suit our hectic lifestyle are consumed more often than not. Although healthy meals do take minutes to prepare, we opt for a microwave solution. Such foods are unhealthy and acid forming but also addictive. Focus on crunchy, lightly cooked vegetables, lean fish and meat. Fresh ginger tea is a great cleanser and helps the digestive system.

How To Become A Well-Being

Mini Game plan; Write down all your food and drink every day, especially alcohol – our standard units

of wine for example – 125mls, 6 glasses in a 750ml bottle, now ‘appear’ to have been replaced by 2-3 glasses per bottle. As such we are drinking more alcohol (acid forming) than ever before. Alcohol, along with fast convenience foods, are all too accessible and tied in with the myriad of special offers and promotions which supermarkets entice us with. Your plan should also be forward thinking. Think about your food shopping, especially Asian supermarkets, which cater well for Chinese, Thai and Indian spices, to bring life to meals. Combine this trip with fresh vegetables and fruit. Experiment with flavours and dishes from the internet or cook with a friend. You can prepare larger portions and use for a next days lunch at work. Any carbohydrates should be brown not white. Therefore, brown rice, brown pasta and spelt/rye breads. Also plan exercise windows walking briskly every day at least 20 minutes each evening accompanied with deep relaxation breathing, in an upright chair or lay on the floor with easy listening music. Record this in your daily diary. In a matter of days you will be feeling sustained energy throughout the day, dropped a dress size, or punching another hole to tighten your belt. Sleep will be deeper and restful. Stress levels will come crashing down and your digestive system will be working with efficiency. Review and plan your well being strategy for effective progress and to stay in the game. Introduce incentives such as new clothes or a holiday to provide motivation, and a reward for the positive changes you have made. Undoubtedly, you are on a journey of improvement and forever a truly well-being. email:ef1global@hotmail.com |81

REVOLVE YOUR WORLD-SCOTLAND

Dr Stuart Lutton Dr Stuart Lutton BDS MJDF is a dentist at Ivy Dental practice in Edinburgh. He has a particular interest in helping his patients change how they feel about themselves through life-changing dentistry such as dental implants, smile design and adult orthodontics. Implants are the revolutionary way to replace missing teeth and can make the lifelong desire for a wonderful smile real. Implants are basically titanium cylinder screws that are placed in the gums, which over a few months, the body accepts as a new root. A porcelain tooth is then placed on top of the root and a beautiful restoration that should last a lifetime is the result. Missing teeth One or more teeth may be lost for lots of reasons – decay, gum disease or sometimes after an accident. Missing teeth can often lead to feelings of self-consciousness. These missing teeth can be replaced in a number of ways including dentures, bridges and implants. Implants are the latest way to replace spaces, literally by building a new tooth and root. What does treatment involve? At the first consultation, impressions will be taken of your teeth and mouth using digital x-ray equipment. Your dentist will make a thorough assessment to ensure that this type of treatment really is suitable for you. Most people are suitable, but individuals have to be over 16 to 18 years of age and teeth to have stopped growing. If you are suitable, treatment starts with the placing of the implant with a simple operation that reaches into the jawbone. This is then left undisturbed for about six months by which time the titanium fuses into the bone much like a natural tooth is lodged in the bone. Impressions are then taken and a porcelain tooth is built. The procedure is complete when your dentist exposes the end of the implant through the gum and a porcelain tooth is placed on top. Stronger, beautiful teeth Implants are long lasting and look great, and they also won’t damage the other adjacent teeth that could be caused by dentures or bridges. Implanted teeth are also stronger than natural teeth and many patients report the renewed ability to eat all sorts of foods when once they could only manage soft foods.

urvey and celebrate your challenges successes. Celebrate both undesirable outcomes and Success. While I believe it’s important to celebrate your success I also believe it’s important to celebrate your undesirable outcomes. Be grateful for the opportunity to learn, be thankful for the reminder that you’re not perfect. Value your relationship with the undesired outcome and rationalise it, as one day success follows. No one enjoys an undesirable outcome, but those who embrace it tend to be more successful. It is purely a lesson learned? Every successful entrepreneur who now commands seven and eight figure incomes had to endure numerous undesirable outcomes. Many are honest and share these experiences, others are more arrogant and portray a super human status persona.

Remember in entrepreneurial speak, there is an “I” in team. Ignore those silly negs (negative people) that say you’re a dreamer or failure. Congratulate yourself on all you’ve done, not dwell on why things didn’t work out but learn the lessons from the undesirable outcomes. Share your successes and challenges at: www.yourevolve.co.uk

The magicians

The The warrior

Has you small business been a success thanks to you choice of team or are you a service provider that cuts to the chase and provide SME with a no nonsense service. The most effective teams maintain a balance by having a healthy variety of types in key roles because each type is good at doing different things. A mix of magicians, warriors, lovers, and sovereigns will get you the best team possible. When one type dominates, friction and conflict can occur: a fall-off of creativity, a lack of flexibility, risk aversion, and paralysis. That’s why the most effective leaders know who they are and surround themselves with people who complement their strengths and offset their weaknesses. The warrior needs a magician, a sovereign, and a few lovers. What often happens in organizations is you get a group of warriors, and they don’t like the magicians so you don’t have any of them on your team. 124 | Revolve Magazine Scottish Edition

Strategic alliances that work There is no magic key to success in business. Living example of this are Lord sugar, sir richard branson amongst other. The strategic alliance is one strategy to reducing many business risk. Remember that 100% of nothing is nothing. 50, 60, 70% of a little is something. Greed is the Achilles heal of many small business owners. Business Function & Activity Model defines an organisation’s business functions and business activities. Business functions are what an organisation is responsible and accountable for doing, in the broadest sense, to fulfil its established role and its responsibilities to its stakeholders. Business activities are what an organisation does to carry out its business functions. Another example involves a mobile telecommunications company interested in detecting a situation whereby new customers are not set up promptly and correctly on their network and within vital communication could cost the bank large sums in interest charged by the central

M

any of us have chosen to measure our success by how many things we own or the brand of products we perceive mean success. Is that really success? Or is our perception of success a facade that leaves us with an empty feeling? If you have a strong sense of what success is to you, don’t read on. You already know. If you are questioning or searching, I have a short story for you. We all use logic in day to day situations and often rationalises the inputs and outputs. Every time, we have had a new experience in our lives and our emotions were involved with it, we made decisions that control our future. Now, we are adults. KEEPING ON TRACK Embracing change may be challenge a challenge to your individuality including all life’s best qualities, such as love, joy, intelligence, creativity, freedom and kindness. Having that in mind as a model demanding to take form reinforces the conviction we are empowered to reach our goal - one that is not so much a New Year’s resolution as a “new you” resolution at any time of the year. Go easy on yourself. I’ve found self-forgiveness is a powerful ally of resolve, and often opens the way to achieving our aims. I once overslept through an important appointment and was mentally condemning myself until I glimpsed a need to be less self-critical. I felt inspired to take a walk in Kew Gardens, which I hadn’t visited for years, and promptly bumped into the very person I was meant to have met that morning. We conducted and concluded our business then and there. Patience is more than just a virtue. It is actually a force for good when the going gets tough, as it probably will. Our unwanted character traits sometimes seem to have a voice of their own, persistently arguing their corner. A “new you” is a healthier you. Character reform and health reform go hand in hand. In many ways this is taken for granted. For instance, it is accepted that moderating a drinking habit is going to improve health. But the links between character and well-being go much deeper than just effecting a change in our actions. Changing thought can be pivotal. Researchers have found traits like bitterness, bad temper and resentment can undermine health, while their opposites promote it. So becoming more forgiving, patient and persistent to bring about change doesn’t just remove a single

Decisions you make regarding the business will have a direct and immediate impact on your personal life. 148 | Revolve Magazine Scottish Edition

eing self-employed is fundamentally different than being an employee. The distinction between work time and personal time blurs. If a problem arises with the business, it’s your problem, and it won’t go away merely because you’ve closed the doors for the day. Decisions you make regarding the business will have a direct and immediate impact on your personal life. For example, if you’re in retail and decide to remain open evenings, it’s your time that’s affected. And, you’re likely to be on call 24 hours a day in the event an emergency arises relating to your business. The impact is even greater if your business involves working out of your home. You may experience conflicts over the use of space for business or personal purposes. The distinction between your personal life and business life is even further attenuated. Even when you’re at home, you’re also physically at work. On the upside, there’s no commute and you can eat cheaper at home. If you have a family, it’s important to measure the impact opening a new business will have on them. It’s best to discuss this as soon as you seriously start to consider the idea. Both you and your family must be willing to put up with the changes in your lives owning a business will bring. Some people

experience emotional and physical strain from being on their own and working the hours it takes to make it. Issues To Consider These aspects of day-to-day living will be seriously affected by your decision to open your own business: Certainty and source of income. One of the biggest differences between being self-employed and being an employee is the source of your income. Employees can generally expect to receive a paycheck at fixed intervals and for a known amount. (Those working on commission or

receiving tips have less certainty regarding the amount.) As the owner of a new small business, you’ll be paid only when and if the business generates enough money. Even successful businesses rarely generate a profit in the beginning stages of operation. You’ll have to be prepared for a period during which your expenses will exceed any income derived from the new business.

Cats maybe do have nine lives....read Jess’ story

went into every one.

Back in 1994, I worked with Standard Life and one of my colleagues, Gerry Warner and his wife, Fiona played paramount roles in the development of Lothian Cat Rescue. The Cat Rescue was fairly young at that stage and growth was obviously on the cards, but it would take time as funds were low and needed to be improved in order to expand and build more pens. Gerry not only rescued cats, but he also turned his hand to the many DIY repairs and building of the actual pens themselves. Gerry and Fiona were true cat lovers who had taken many cats into their own home. I remember one in particular, WibblyWobbly. Wibbly-Wobbly had obviously had a stroke and didn’t walk straight, hence his affectionate name. No-one would have given Wibbly-Wobbly a home so Gerry and Fiona took him in. There are numerous tales like this but we’d be here for a long time if we

Every year Gerry & Fiona promoted a prize draw to help raise crucial funding for the Cat Rescue so Gerry would come into work and not only try to sell as many raffle tickets as possible, but also try to get many of us to take 100 books to sell on ourselves. We succeeded too and even managed to get non-catlovers to take raffle tickets. We worked in Marketing after all!

174 | Revolve Magazine Scottish Edition

During the yearly raffle, Gerry obviously noted my love of cats and the fact that I didn’t actually have any. So one day, the doorbell rang and there was Gerry on my doorstep giving me a chapter and verse sob story about this poor little cat and her four kittens. He explained that the kittens had obviously been born in the wild and although the mother was starving, she was attempting to continue to feed her kittens.

It was winter, cold, pouring with rain and blowing a gale, and the Cat Rescue had no space to take in any more cats. Unless this cat and her kittens found shelter soon, being subjected to the Scottish winter elements and no food meant they would die. What could I say? Yes, I would take them on the basis that it was only until Cat Rescue could find suitable homes for them. By the time Gerry made it back to the location of the cats, one of the kittens had already died. Having rescued the cat and her three remaining kittens, as was the norm for Cat Rescue, Gerry took them to the vet for a once over (including worming and flea treatments) and to have the mother neutered. Neutering is key, not only to protect the cat but to ensure they are not left to have yet more 176 | Revolve Magazine Scottish Edition

there. I could see she was frightened but she didn’t make any attempt to attack me. I felt so sorry for her. She was skin and bone and just looked like she had no energy left. I lifted her out of the pen and took her through to the lounge. We sat on the floor in front of the fire and she made no attempt to pull away from me. It was obvious that she was not wild but had obviously been a domestic cat which had been mistreated and

kittens for which no-one wants to accept any responsibility. Gerry re-appeared at my home with a cat, three kittens, a pen, some food and a few toys. He explained that the cats were wild so I would need to pick them up each day (amidst protest....hissing and scratching), and whilst keeping a firm grip, clap and cuddle them in order to tame them and get them used to be being handled. He asked me to take care of the cats for approximately eight weeks until it was safe to separate the kittens from their mother and re-home them all. After Gerry left, I thought I’d get started straight away. After all, there were plenty cuddles to go round. As expected, as soon as I put my arm into the pen, the three kittens had a field day! However, much to my surprise the mother just sat

Having gained Jess’ confidence, my next mission was to get her to eat something. Although she was starving, she obviously wasn’t used to getting much to eat so it was a slow process but we managed it nevertheless. She was feeding her kittens to it was imperative that we build her up. Over the next few days, I allowed Jess to have freedom to roam the house and petted the kittens at every opportunity. It became apparent however that one of the kittens wasn’t well. and they would have to operate. Imagine my sadness when I received a call the next morning to say the kitten had died. His intestines were completely blocked and the vet couldn’t do anything as the damage was too great. This is one of the perils of cats living in the wild. Over the coming weeks, the kittens became household pets and were also given the freedom to run around the house. But, like all young animals, their antics kept us on our toes. On one occasion, I heard an almighty crash in the hall. I ran out to find Jess looking at me with a look of alarm on her face but I couldn’t see the kittens. I then spotted the large vase lying on its side on the floor with the flowers scattered around it then I saw the pair of eyes gleaming out at me from INSIDE the vase. I had to laugh...they were so cute!

collected. It was so sad to see them go! I was left with Jess, who although she was sick fed up with the kittens pestering her, pined for days after they had gone. I felt so guilty! At work the following week, Gerry broached the subject of re-homing Jess. I came home that night and couldn’t stop thinking about life without her. I guess I knew the answer.... there was no way I was going to part with my beloved Jess.... she was here to stay!

’Jess, life after kittens’ Regardless of the amount of time I spent with Jess, she never changed....she would always be a wee scaredy-cat, She never freely mix with visitors (and especially kids) but I protected her and made sure she always had her own home comforts. When anyone came into the house, Jess quietly retreated to Jess did perk up during the initial weeks but given that she another room or to her bed. As long as she was calm, I was was greatly malnourished, it would take some time to get her happy. It was like having two different pets as there was a side back into full health. She was getting bored with the kittens to Jess that no-one else but me saw. When she was on her own

and she kept trying to push them away as they just wanted to constantly feed from her. She used to escape to other parts of the house to get away from them as her energy levels were still low. After about 10 weeks, Gerry contacted me to say they had found a possible new home for the two kittens. It was a young couple who wanted two kittens so they would be company for each other. Gerry asked if I would mind them visiting my home to see the kittens and to give me a chance to assess whether I thought they would be suitable. Visit over, I was satisfied that the couple would be perfect as they clearly loved the kittens and couldn’t wait to get them. They also had a suitable environment for them to live happily and be well looked after. It was a relief to me that the two kittens would be kept together as they’d had such an awful time of it up until then. We arranged a suitable day for the kittens to be 178 | Revolve Magazine Scottish Edition

with me, she would roll over on the carpet to have her belly rubbed. She would nudge my arm if she wanted clapped or cuddled and she loved nothing more than playing with my hair if I got down on the floor with her. She was the most loveable and affectionate cat I could ever have hoped to have in my life. Other people only saw her briefly as she disappeared out of their reach. Jess never ventured from the back garden, with her favourite spot being under the conifers. She used to sit on the patio in a neighbouring house which had not yet been sold...she took it ill-out when people move in! That was her territory! In this picture, Jess decided where better to get up close and personal with birds than to sit on top of the bird house! I attached a little bell onto her collar so that birds and mice would hear her approaching...poor Jess!

Right from the start, I made sure Jess got her annual booster vaccination and when the aging process started approximately 10 years later (2004)....I made regular visits to the vet as Jess developed a heart murmur and the vet also kept her weight in check. Jess was still on form and still acted like a cat half her age! As she got a bit older, she had a slight skin disorder so the vet used to shampoo her on a quarterly basis. You can imagine how that went down! Cats and water just don’t mix! She was usually blown dry but on one occasion, as it was such a beautiful day, the vet and I decided that it would be kinder

for her just to come home and dry out on the doorstep whilst basking in the sun. She looked so funny when her fur was wet.... Over the coming years, I tried taking Jess to a cattery for a trial period prior to going on holiday. She never settled and simply stopped eating and drinking. The longest I left her was three days then I had to bring her home. As soon as she got home, she wolfed her food down again. I think Jess lived in fear that I would abandon her. As a result, for many years, when I went on holiday, my Mum came to stay at my house to look after Jess. This worked well but as the years passed, it wasn’t always practical. One cattery in particular, Ivanlea, owned by Fiona Watters, tried everything to make Jess comfortable. Fiona’s kindness and devotion went beyond cattery requirements. When Jess wouldn’t eat, Fiona tried her with food from her own dinner table...fresh chicken, salmon, tuna etc but Jess was on her starvation stand and just wouldn’t budge. After several days, Fiona took her to the vet who gave Jess valium in an attempt to get her to eat but guess what happened....she fell asleep! They had to wait until she awoke to see if they could get her to eat something! Poor Fiona was beside herself but that said, Fiona was the only person from any cattery that Jess came to. She allowed Fiona to brush her and didn’t try to hide in a corner. For all intents and purposes, apart from not eating and drinking, Jess seemed at ease during her stay at Ivanlea. As with all cats, Jess loved nothing more than a bit of catnip! It became a party piece....well, more a way of getting Jess out to mix with visitors, particularly if they were staying with us. She also had a novice way of drinking milk...with her paw! Once again, a firm favourite with Jess and visitors! I did catch Jess sharing my bowl of cereal one day...she was sneakily dipping her paw in the milk every time I turned away and I eventually cottoned on when I heard her name tag tinkle at my side. She was a wee chancer. At certain times of the year, we had a friendly bat that used to visit our garden every night. At dusk it would swoop down as it flew around and around the garden. I used to think Jess’ head would spin off as she followed its every movement...often for hours at a time! One Christmas, Jess brought me in a gift of a mouse! As I shrieked, she dropped it and it promptly ran into and up the Christmas tree that I had painstakingly decorated only the day before. All the gifts that had been carefully arranged at the foot of the tree and all the decorations had to be stripped away in an attempt to find the mouse. It felt like a scene from the movie ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’! We never did find that mouse!

JESS RIP c1991 T Unfortunately, in 2010, old age started to set in with Jess. She was unable to continue grooming herself properly so her fur became a bit matted. I combed it as often as I felt possible as I didn’t want to hurt her. Jess developed a bedtime routine of circling her bed and meowing for five minutes before settling down (the vet suggested that could be dementia). She was still able to jump up and firmly plant herself in front of me on the arm of the chair or on top of my laptop keyboard. During the final week of Jess’ life, in February 2011, she was unable to get into her litter tray and she started crying as it was obviously sore for her to lie down. This happened suddenly over the space of one week. It was on 21st February 2011, Jess was put to sleep. I had her for 17 years and she was approximately 20 years old. I made sure to get Jess’ ashes so that I can keep her memory forever. She may be gone but will NEVER be forgotten. My thanks go to Lothian Cat Rescue, Fiona Watters (Ivanlea Cattery) and Margaret Riddle (ICR Butt & Partners Vets) as they all played a major part in making Jess’ life a better one. Fiona.

Cyber Bullying

Revolve promotes safe and responsible use of the internet, during and after Internet safety week. Our goal is to inform small business and general internet users how to keep themselves safe online. Revolve welcomes the proposal to abolish all anonymous Internet access. ISPs and companies would be required to gather strong proof of identity (official ID cards and similar) before connecting users, and would be required to retain records. There is also a recommendation that would require all persons on the open Internet connections from such libraries and the Internet cafes and wireless network, to identify themselves with a personal code before being able to get online. The idea is that the police or the police intelligence service, with data from the open network connections will be able to investigate the ever increasing abuse on the internet. Help Revolve to demonstrate to our small business advertisers that we use the internet responsibly and that our members are real persons. The Internet is now the most referenced source for information and communications; an effective medium for active and effective participation in society. It is also now the primary vehicle through which young people can develop their knowledge and skills. Young people particularly, should be motivated to use the Internet, but in a safe, responsible and effective manner. We place reliance on the integrity of internet users not to transmit or share inappropriate material on this site. Neighbourhood watch Neighbourhood watch takes on a whole new meaning. Revolve will provide a variety of real time statistics, driven by local communities, that enable you to monitor how your (small business and socially aware consumers) neighbours are performing in their challenges to reduce their carbon footprint. The reason for this is that we find that Scottish oak is not only strong and durable but is also beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.
