Type 2 diabetes has reached a near epidemic status in America. Often referred to as non-insulin dependent diabetes Type 2 diabetes affects nearly 90% of the over 20 million in the US with the condition. People with diabetes type 2 unlike those with diabetes type 1 still do produce insulin. Their bodies just do not react to insulin properly. This inadequate reaction is known as insulin resistance. When the body does not respond to insulin as it should the consequence is the same as it would be it the body was not producing any insulin at all. They might have the same symptoms and problems sufferers of type 1 diabetes have. Dehydration is caused when a buildup of sugar in the blood causes the kidneys to work harder and pass more urine. The kidneys expel the glucose through urination only after losing too much water causing dehydration. Diabetic Coma or Hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma occurs when a person with diabetes type 2 becomes so dehydrated they cannot drink enough fluid to make up the loss. They can develop life threatening conditions and complications. Over time high levels of sugar in the blood can cause serious problems like damage to the nerves and small blood vessels of the eye, the kidneys and heart can also become damaged. An increased risk of hardening of the large arteries can cause heart attack and stroke. Although anyone is at risk for diabetes 2 those at the highest risk are those who are obese, women who have had gestational diabetes, anyone with family members who have diabetes Type 2 and people with metabolic syndrome. People, who smoke, live inactive lifestyles, or who have poor dietary habits also have an increased risk of developing diabetes Type 2. While these factors are known to increase the risk of the disease no one is sure exactly what causes any form of diabetes to develop and there is no test to screen for such a possibility at this time. The symptoms of type 2 diabetes are different from person to person, but they include having increased thirst, increased hunger, having a dry mouth, nausea and vomiting, having to urinate frequently, blurred vision, and numbness or tingling of the hands or feet. A doctor or health care provider will use several test to determine if you have diabetes type 2. The doctor may look for glucose and ketone bodies in your urine. A fasting blood test might be ordered as well to test for high blood glucose levels. Serious complications and health issues can develop if the diabetes Type 2 is not monitored and taken care of properly. They can develop retinopathy, which is an abnormality of the eye related to diabetes. Kidney damage is another complication that is a risk of diabetes Type 2. Damage to nerves and hardening of the can lead to decreased sensation and poor circulation in the feet, and this can be a very serious complication. A decrease in circulation can lead to infections, ulcers, and even the risk of amputation.

Making good lifestyle choices and monitor diabetes Type 2 can reduce the risk of complications and lead to a healthier life overall.
