INTRODUCTION
Introduction Welcome to the fourth edition of Rewire Festival in the city of The Hague. A range of venues such as the industrial E.ON Electriciteitsfabriek, the monumental Grote Kerk, The Hague’s biggest pop venue, Paard van Troje, as well as intimate places like Prins27 and Barthkapel form the backdrop for an extensive two-day programme. Expect many exciting artists; whether internationally acclaimed or local talents in the field of contemporary electronic music, new jazz, neo-classical, experimental pop, sound art and multidisciplinary performances.
6
Unlike the past editions, the programme focuses entirely on music and sound. The programme reflects on the constant stream of developments in contemporary and electronic music. We aim to offer context for our visitors and stimulate engagement and discussion. The most evident example of this is found in the festival’s thematic structure, (education) workshops and talks programme. This year Rewire provides a context that (in many perspectives) harks back to traditional principles of making music; and one where the relationship between acoustic and electronic, as well as contemporary composed and electronic music will be examined. In a society where we are constantly confronted with digital tools and environments, there is a converse longing for the analog and the tangible. This relationship between the traditional and the present inspired us while curating the programme. For instance; the lute - a classic Baroque instrument - is central to the work of Jozef van Wissem, while Herman Kolgen’s Train Fragments provides a synthesis of contemporary music and digital art. The world premiere of Henrik Schwarz and Nik Bärtsch’s Scripted & Prepared explores the possibilities of the prepared piano and fuses the worlds of the #RWR14
INTRODUCTION
concert hall and nightclub together. The programme created round found sound highlights one need that many musicians feel; that of capturing everyday and tangible events and situations in their music. Rewire pays particular attention to those artists who are looking for new ways to develop their ideas. The experimental roads these artists take often result in taking high-level risks that challenge their own practices and perceptions. During the festival, a number of artists are given the opportunity to try out new experiments. For example, Danish band Efterklang will perform with percussionist Tatu RÜnkkÜ; one of the first steps in a redefining process for a band who are openly looking for a new sound, and new opportunities. An example of an artist who successfully struck a new path is James Holden. His album The Inheritors - packed full of electro-acoustic compositions - had such an artistic impact that it has resulted in a major redefinition of his own artistic practice. Rewire’s programme for this year has many other examples of artists who have reassessed their approach to their work in terms of fusing traditional and current practices, as well as those who look to define something new. And this booklet can help you discover their work whilst exploring our festival. We have tried to be as complete as possible, but for last minute updates, please refer to our website. We wish you a very inspiring time at our festival.

Grote Kerk Jazz / Doors open: 20:30
Bohren & Der Club Of Gore DE Bohren & Der Club Of Gore have been playing their hypnotic ambient jazz for over twenty years. Bohren & Der Club of Gore understand the value of silence in their music; fleshing out their meditative work-outs (built initially round sonorous bass lines and sketchy percussive passages) with saxophone, piano, vibraphone and various electronics.
Henrik Schwarz & Nik Bärtsch DE/CH
12
German house producer Henrik Schwarz and Swiss pianist / composer Nik Bärtsch wrote a new piece together that will serve as a basis for their Scripted & Prepared project. This concert is a world premiere. The duo examine the possibilities of the prepared piano of Nik Bärtsch in relationship to the scripted and software infused piano, played by Henrik Schwarz.
Prins27 Neo-classical / Doors open 19:45
Greg Haines UK Greg Haines is an English experimental musician and composer who now resides in Berlin. Though gaining a reputation as a brilliant pianist, Haines has recently displayed his willingness to experiment with other approaches, fusing his interests in electronics and unusual sounds to create a more inclusive “whole”. His music has been compared to Arvo Pärt and Jóhann Jóhannsson. #RWR14
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 7
Jozef van Wissem NL Jozef van Wissem is a celebrated Dutch minimalist composer and lute player. Drawing on Biblical ideas and No Wave influences, Van Wissem looks to experiment with Renaissance and Baroque forms of lute music. Many of his compositions for the instrument have involved a dynamic mix of conceptual, minimalist, classical and improvisational approaches; often using cut-and-paste tactics, experiments with palindromics, field recordings and free improvisation. In 2013 van Wissem won the Cannes Soundtrack Award for the score of Only Lovers Left Alive at the Cannes Film Festival.
Maarten Vos & Greg Haines NL/UK A classically schooled cellist, Utrecht musician Maarten Vos uses different electronic and acoustic techniques to enrich and manipulate the sound of his cello. Vos’s music can be defined as impressionistic, albeit with a raw, experimental edge. Maarten Vos has a long history of collaborating with a wide range of different international artists in electronic, classical, and pop music. At Rewire he will join forces for a special performance with acclaimed experimental composer, Greg Haines.
Von Nohrfeldt Ensemble NL Von Nohrfeldt (Rutger Muller) confronts the mystic and eery side of 20th century classical music with the rhythmic drive of experimental techno, glitch and IDM. The intricate acoustic details of classical and avant garde instrumentation are intertwined with digitally generated drones, rhythms and effects. Uncanny harmonic explorations are expressed through repeating patterns that play with symmetry, asymmetry, tonality and atonality. Von Nohrfeldt will be joined live by his “futuristic chamber ensemble” comprising of classically trained avant garde instrumentalists Sydney Sitters (piano), Kim-Jose Bode (recorders, vocals) and Wen-Chin Fu (cello). #RWR14

Barthkapel Drone / Doors open 19:00
Lee Noble US Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist Lee Noble built his signature sound around dusty analog drones and idiosyncratic atmospheres, combining synth and tape loop work with a simple song format.
Noveller US Noveller is the solo project of Austin-based guitarist and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. Handling the electric guitar as her muse, Lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it’s housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer. 15
Void of Sound NO Void Of Sound is the alter ego of Sigurd Borge Kristoffersen. Drawing inspiration from (in his words) “the dark Norwegian nature”, Kristoffersen’s work can be an overpowering experience in a live setting, where moody visuals are set against guitar improvisations and wild, almost feral vocal lines. SCREENING A Grammar For Listening (Paard I / 22:00) How to create a meaningful dialogue between looking and listening? Luke Fowler’s film cycle A Grammar For Listening (parts 1-3) attempts to address this question through the possibilities afforded by 16mm film and digital sound recording devices. RA: Films (Prins27 / 22:45) We have invited our mediapartner Resident Advisor to screen interesting new documentaries. See timetable for screening times. #RWR14
Simian Mobile Disco
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 7
Club programme Paard I & II / Doors open 22:30 Rewire presents a mix of electronic innovators who are reshaping club music as we know it.
Simian Mobile Disco UK The British duo Simian Mobile Disco (dj UK) continue to explore new sonic paths. Initially famous for their heady, rabble rousing singles they have since looked to give their investigations into electro and house a harder, increasingly experimental edge. For their 4th “studio” album, Whorl the duo eschewed all their previous working methods in favour of using only a battery of modular synths. The results can be described as a “spaced out krautrock meets techno.”
Lee Gamble UK Listed by Rolling Stone magazine in August 2014 as “one of the 10 New Artists you need to know”, Gamble is best known for his work mixing techno, jungle and vintage house. Not one to sit still creatively, Gamble continuously
embraces other approaches and technologies. The results audible in his two new releases, the EP, Kuang, and LP, KOCH.
Albert van Abbe NL Albert van Abbe sees himself as one of the underdogs of the electronic music scene. His music often plays up to his “outsider” ethos; and can best be described as visceral, often headstrong dance music, tempered by a richness of texture and a melancholic tone. Van Abbe started his own label, No Comment, in 2010. No Comment releases collaborations with artists like Convextion, Sleeparchive and Gerald Donald.
Wouter van Veldhoven NL Wouter van Veldhoven describes himself as “tape recorder addict, musician”. The manner and order of this self-description obviously has some importance for him, as his live performances are driven by an imposing assemblage of old and selfbuilt tape recorders and related

electronic equipment. Live, the overall effect is impressive, both audibly and visually.
Vessel UK
20
Vessel is Sebastian Gainsborough from Bristol. Vessel’s sound is unique; he weaves industrial noise and dance rhythms together to act as basic frameworks that are then manipulated to create an enervating mix of off-beat, alien passages of music. His recently released album, Punish, Honey is one of the most surprising records of the year.
Gardland AU Gardland has been described as a “cracked energy exchange” between Alex Murray and Mark Smith. The ideas for their recent LP, Syndrome Syndrome, came about after a (doubtless bruising) ten day “psychedelic desert excursion”; far from their homes in Sydney, Australia. Although Gardland state they are “happy to co-exist with disorder”, the duo’s music doesn’t always seem driven by a love for chaos. Rather, Gardland
use the rapid stabs, blurts and squiggles to form strong melodic passages; in a wider and colourful - electronic attack.
Koreless UK Koreless makes empathic, intelligent electronic music that is versatile enough to to transcend any number of genre boundaries; leading Resident Advisor to state: “Despite his age his music exudes maturity, nesting in the ever-expanding dub-step lexicon somewhere between softened 2-step and soulful electronica.”
Dauwd UK Dauwd exploits a raft of sequencing techniques to build up washes of sound informed by percussive textures and rhythmic counterpoints; the whole somehow creating a rich and meditative inner vision that also translates to the dance floor. The artist’s credo is disarmingly simple; “make a noise, make it my noise, then give it some rhythm”.
#RWR14
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 7
Drvg Cvltvre NL Drvg Cvlvtre - aka Tilburg-based producer Vincent Koreman has been praised by many for his uncompromising take on techno and doom house. Earlier this year the Guardian chose
American Psychosis [Part one] as “This Week’s Best New Track”. Drvg Cvltvre recently signed to the legendary US label Nervous records (who have released the likes of Todd Terry and Frankie Knuckles).

DAY PROGRAMME
Found Sound Studio Loos / Doors open: 16:45 The programme around Found Sound examines the context of field recordings and Musique Concrète. We’ve selected four acts who all deliver a complete different output within this framework. Klara Lewis SE Klara Lewis’s debut release, Ett, described by The Quietus as “one of the most startling albums of 2014” is a remarkable album; one created from what the artist’s label has described as “organic sound matter”. Such hyperbole is undoubtledly deserved, though trying to form a definitive opinion on Lewis’s huge, enveloping washes of sound is difficult. Her work is, however, empathic and embracing, and covers a wide range of attitudes and approaches. Valerio Tricoli IT Valerio Tricoli has spent the best part of a decade perfecting his own edgy brand of Musique Concrète; complementing the discipline’s rich canon his own with idiosyncratic forays into sound. Wanda Group UK Wanda Group (aka Louis Johnstone) uses the sounds he captures on tape recorder to fire his experiments in sound. This seemingly mundane method produces surprising results. Johnstone’s examination of the grey areas between rhythmic electronica and sound art leads to a strong element of displacement and abstraction in his work. Geritz / Kaffa NL Geritz / Kaffa is the improvisation project of Thijs Geritz (Mouches Volantes, Einzelganger, Trapper) and Stephan C. Kaffa (Polarized, Soft Posh, iPennies, KANGKAFFA). #RWR14

Tatu Rönkkö & Efterklang FI/DK Tatu Rönkkö + Efterklang is a new collaboration between the Finnish percussionist Tatu Rönkkö and the Danish three-piece band Efterklang. Tatu Rönkkö has been active in the Finnish experimental music scene for the past decade as a percussionist and drummer. Over the last eighteen months, Tatu has been a permanent member of Efterklang’s live band, and the musical friendship has now developed into a new project; one with its own distinctive character. Efterklang have been at the forefront of musical exploration since 2003; their music covering a wide range of styles, including electronica, experimental pop and contemporary classical music. Seemingly ever busy, the band has toured the world extensively; also finding time to release four albums and two films. Their most recent album, Piramida, was released in 2012 on UK label 4AD. They have also collaborated in a wide number of projects and releases; working with several classical orchestras, and for these efforts in particular, Efterklang were nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2013. Despite the hullabaloo round “The Last Concert” in February 2014, the band is still active; though there are no albums or world tours planned for the foreseeable future. Efterklang have decided to rethink how they operate, and their performances this year are the first steps of this new process.

The Inheritors Paard I / Doors open 20:45 James Holden presents his monumental album The Inheritors live with Tom Page on drums and Etienne Jaumet on saxophone. They will be supported by the French group Cabaret Contemporain.
James Holden presents The Inheritors live UK James Holden’s stock has risen in the Netherlands over the last few years; due no doubt to the success of his ambitious second album, 2013’s The Inheritors. Described by Pitchfork as “a raging bonfire of electro-acoustic composition”, this mind-blowing album drew on psychedelia and electronic experimentation Holden’s live shows are equally expansive, fleshing out his stage sound with modular synthesizer, drums and saxophone.
Cabaret Contemporain FR Cabaret Contemporain boast avant garde composers, sound technicians, improvisors and producers in its ranks. The
multidisciplinary group create sounds from disparate elements; such as game modes and prepared piano. Consequently the sound consists of disparate elements from a wide range of genres and disciplines; such as minimal, techno, krautrock and neo-classical. At Rewire they will be joined by Etienne Jaumet.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8
Paard II Jazz, Impro / Doors open 20:00
Colin Stetson CA Colin Stetson is famous for coaxing the strangest sounds from his saxophone to create both rhythm, melody and bass. To do this he utilises circular breathing techniques as well as microphones placed on his instrument and vocal cords. His technical virtuosity and vivacious compositions can be heard on his last album, New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light.. Stetson has worked with Bon Iver, Tom Waits and Arcade Fire.
DNMF NL DNMF is a collaboration between Dutch heavy jazz duo Dead Neanderthals and Dutch ambient/drone experimentalist Machinefabriek. Taking inspiration from such notables as H.P. Lovecraft, and drawing energy from ancient cosmic entities, they have, like Lovecraft, peered “over the rim into fathomless chaos of eternal night” and managed to create their own form of hideous (and musical) monstrosity. Their LP, DNMF, was released by Moving Furniture Records in September, 2014.
Fiium Shaarrk AT/UK Fiium Shaarrk is a ‘three-headed musical beast’; made up from the talents of Rudi Fischerlehner (drums), Isambard Khroustaliov (electronics) and Maurizio Ravalico (percussion). A heady and often unquantifiable mix of proto-dance grooves, live electronics, modern classical and modern percussion, Fiium Shaarrk’s music can be described as visceral, cerebral and sometimes visionary; drawing succour from wide impressionistic passages of sound and painstakingly precise beats.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8
Prins27 Singer-songwriter, Cinematic / Doors open: 20:00
Hydras Dream SE Hydras Dream is a special collaboration between the Swedish singersongwriter Anna Von Hausswolff and Swedish film composer Matti Bye. The idea behind their collaboration is to translate stories, films and myths into musical and (during their live performances) visual landscapes. Their recent album, The Little Match Girl, was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous story.
Chantal Acda BE Alongside her work in Isbells, Chantal Acda has worked under the Sleepingdog moniker since 2006, making three well received albums, most recently With Our Heads in the Clouds and Our Hearts in the Fields (2010). Her first real solo record, Let Your Hands Be My Guide, was released to international acclaim, and is the result of a remarkable fusion of the talents of Shahzad Ismaily, Peter Broderick, múm cellist Gyða Valtýsdóttir, and Nils Frahm; who also took on the role of producer. A new album, Live in Dresden was released by Gizeh records in September 2014.
Will Samson UK Will Samson works with a diverse array of sounds that emanate from his hoard of old tape machines and cassettes; leavening out the resultant hisses, clicks and whirrs with voice and guitar. There is a soulful and melancholic aspect noticable in a lot of his work, through 2011’s Hello Friends, Goodbye Friends and 2012’s Balance to his latest release, Light Shadows; a four-song EP (boasting remixes by luminaries such as Benoît Pioulard and Ritornell) that came out on Cologne’s Karaoke Kalk in the spring of 2014.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8
Club programme Paard I & II / Doors open 22:00 Rewire presents a bold mix of electronic innovators who are reshaping club music as we know it. Including a showcase by the legendary Hyperdub label from London, who are celebrating their 10th anniversary.
Gold Panda UK
36
The celebrated English DJ and producer Gold Panda (aka Derwin Schlecker) creates forward-thinking dance music that draws from dub-step, witch house and electronica in equal measure. His debut album Lucky Shiner was praised for its breadth of ambition, and its attempts to balance “songs with structure” alongside expressive passages of experimental electronica, and crashing beats. Gold Panda is currently touring on the back of his recently released second full studio album, Half Of Where You Live.
The Field SE Stockholm-born and Berlinbased, The Field a.k.a. Axel Willner is best known for his atmospheric ambient techno, often based round a steady ‘motorik’ beat,
and complemented by an invigorating pattern of hooks and loops. This formula (originally driven by his preference for Buzz – a software program he still uses to make music today) has served him well; from early releases such as Love vs. Distance, and his acclaimed debut LP From Here We Go Sublime through to his latest LP, 2013’s Cupid’s Head. The Field will be joined by drummer Jesper Skarin for his live performance.
Ital US Previously known for his guitar and vocal duties for his dance/ noise group, Mi Ami, Daniel Martin-McCormick now uses the moniker Ital; under which he creates complex, seductive dance music that seems to draw inspiration from all quarters. Ital’s latest album, Endgame was recently released on Planet Mu.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8
10 Years of Hyperdub Paard II
Kode9 UK Steve Goodman, aka Kode9 is also known as the owner of the Hyperdub record label. Inspired by dub reggae and jungle, Goodman was one of the founding members of the early dub-step scene. Goodman is also active in academia; as well as gaining a doctorate in Philosophy, he works as a lecturer in media production, and as a course tutor for a master’s program in sonic culture. Kode9 has released two full-length albums; Memories of the Future and Black Sun (both featuring MC The Spaceape) on Hyperdub. Kode9 has released two full-length albums; Memories of the Future and Black Sun (both featuring the late MC, The Spaceape). Their final EP, The Killing Season, was released in October 2014.
Cooly G UK Cooly G is the stage name of producer, singer and
DJ Merrisa Campbell. Following a number of EPs and 12-inches, Campbell released her debut LP, the accomplished Playin’ Me on Hyperdub in 2012. This was followed up by 2014’s single, Hold Me. Campbell’s work has its roots in house and the rawer elements of dub, grime and garage; but is also noticeable for its careful and clever arrangements and subtle use of space and texture. A new LP, Wait ‘Til Night, playfully described by Campbell as “Lo Fi Bedroom music”, was released in October 2014.
copeland UK Copeland (formerly known as Inga Copeland, and once half of Hype Williams alongside Dean Blunt) is something of a musical will o’ the wisp. Her music is a dizzying mix of loops, treated vocals and samples, and enervating passages of percussion. Not one to settle down within any set of stylistic boundaries, copeland also plays about with the vagaries of public image – something seen in the title of her debut LP, Because I’m Worth It, released in May 2014.
