Sharing Energy Tate is exploring ways to reduce carbon footprint through renewable energy sources. The expanded Tate Modern draws much of its energy needs from heat emitted by EDF Energy’s transformers in the adjoining operational switch house. Groundwater from boreholes provides heating and cooling for the new building. Maximising energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy is a key consideration within renovation and new building projects across Tate

Waste care and lighting Composting food waste from the cafe and restaurant at Tate Modern and green waste from the landscapes, diverting a valuable resource from landfill. Office and catering operations at Tate Britain and Tate Modern are landfill-free. Waste that cannot be recycled is sent to energy recovery facilities in the south-east, generating power for the National Grid. Centralised lighting control in galleries and movement sensor lighting in office areas ensure that lighting is only switched on when necessary.

Saving water • Water use across Tate’s galleries has decreased by 38% from 2008– 12. Significant reductions have been made across all galleries, including a saving of 57% at Tate Britain and a 26% reduction at Tate Modern. Low flow and sensor-controlled toilets and taps are ensuring that the minimise water use at these sites. More detailed metering of water use in their buildings is also helping them to identify and target further areas for improvement.

Food and beverage An active sustainability policy for all food and beverages that are served at the Tate. They received a Good Egg Award from Compassion in World farming for the use of free-range and cage free eggs . The food cakes , sandwiches and others are prepared in its own kitchen in the Tate thus reducing carbon footprint of being delivered after being prepared elsewhere . Fish for our London sites is sourced and delivered every day from Newlyn, Cornwall, where they work with a team of Cornish fishermen who catch only sustainable British fish. Even their vegetables are sourced from recommended farmers to ensure the sustainability of the raw ingredients.

Creating the perfect atmosphere

How ? PE-Xa pipework has been embedded in the concrete slabs that make up each floor of the new building to circulate cooled water and provide comfort cooling throughout. The TABS system was specified by consulting engineer Max Fordham and is a key element in the M&E design. It also uses waste heat from EDF Energy’s on-site transformers. The building has a BREEAM ‘Very good’ rating and is predicted to use 50% less energy than a typical gallery and generate 44% less carbon than required by current Building Regulations. The benefits of the TABS system include low investment costs and high levels of comfort and performance. It delivers ‘soft cooling’ with no draughts and the ability to reduce the output of other cooling devices.
