Active-duty military and family members who have a valid driver’s license from their home state do not have to get a Texas driver’s license; it is only necessary to take the written test. However, if the driver’s license has expired, even if only by one day, then the driving test will also have to be taken. If you own a vehicle and wish to obtain a Texas driver’s license, you need to show proof of insurance and Texas registration.

Vehicle Inspections

Annual automobile inspections are required in Texas and must be completed before registering an automobile or obtaining a Texas license plate. Vehicle inspections are done at some local gas and inspection stations at the cost of $14.50 for in-state vehicles.

You and your passengers must always wear seatbelts while driving. You will be ticketed and issued heavy nes if seatbelts are not secured. State law requires that all children under age eight or at least 4 feet 9 inches be properly restrained in child seats.

State Laws

Texas State law requires you to have sufcient liability insurance and a valid driver’s license in order to operate a vehicle. e term “vehicle” generally includes automobiles, motorcycles, vans, trailers and boats regularly parked or garaged overnight. Furthermore, your vehicle must be properly registered. Motorcycles and their operators are subject to special laws.

Auto Liability Insurance

In Texas, drivers who wish to operate their automobiles must be covered with at least liability insurance in accordance with the Texas Motor Safety Responsibility Act of 1981. Minimum limits are $30,000 to $60,000 bodily injury liability and $25,000 property damage liability for any licensed motor vehicle.

Communication Device

Vehicle drivers cannot use hand-held or hands-free communication devices such as cell phones, two way radios or electronic devices such as personal data assistants (PDA’s) while driving a vehicle. Vehicle drivers can operate these devices only once the vehicle has been safely stopped and the vehicle placed in park. is policy applies to all military and civilian personnel who operate vehicles on Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis.

Within 30 days of moving to Texas you will need to have your vehicle registered and titled. Tax offices can help with registering your vehicle and issuing Texas license plates.

You have up to 90 days a er moving to Texas to secure a Texas driver’s license. If you present a current out of state driver’s license the written and driving test will be waived.

Auto Insurance

Texas requires that a person may not operate a vehicle unless nancial responsibility is established for the vehicle. Texas law requires minimum coverage of $30,000 per injured person up to a total of $60,000 for everyone injured in an accident, and $25,000 for property damage. is basic coverage is called 30/60/25 coverage. Failure to show proof of insurance may result in towing the vehicle in question and additional nes.
