Project area The ORMUS residential complex is located in Cagliari between Piazza Giovanni, the Music’s Park (Parco della Musica), Via Dante and Via Salaris. It consists of a flat-top building on the two lowest levels (ground floor and basement) and four residential blocks of six levels each. The building at the corner between Via Dante and Via Salaris is not part of the complex.

The project area is located in a strategic position, in that, so far it is sited between two city borders: the consolidate city and the new city, lately affected by a series of urban projects.

The two urban typologies that surround the urban block of the project are also different in their morphology. The old town is characterised by streets, surrounded by compact buildings, whereas the new town is described as “open”, because the buildings are scattered on the area, making pedestrian space more flexible.

The potential multipurpose nature of the complex is enhanced by the two lateral streets, which represent two of the main arterial streets of Cagliari: Via Dante as the commercial way, Via Sant’Alenixedda as the cultural one.

Current situation: no vertical permeability

The most important problems of the complex concern the flat-top building, as its potentials are not fully being met. The internal pathways are made up of corridors which link the different streets that surround the block. Moreover the present functions (banks, furniture shops, ect.) are not able to pull a lot of people in. The courtyards, directly lit by natural light, are inaccessible as is the basement, where there are only stock rooms and some parking spaces. The vertical permeability is absent, the only links are represented by the stairs that lead people to the houses.


Initial concept Based on the distinction between “closed” and “open” city it was assumed three different hypothesis of intervention on the flat-top building. The first presupposes to re-use the open city model by scattering small buildings on his two floors. In this case the paths would be more flexible. The second one suggests the closed model through the study of linear pathways that cut transversely and longitudinally the building. In both cases it is generated a conflict with one of the present urban models. The third scenario seems to be the most suitable. It assumes to mix the two design strategies to create a hybrid system which contains both the characteristics of the closed and the open city.

An important aspect is the increase of vertical permeability, achieved through the dismemberment of the ground floor’s garret. In this way we created a variety of physical and visual connections between the ground floor and the basement, ensuring sufficient lighting at the same time.

Idea of project: more vertical permeability


The decision to create a compact block along Via Dante and Via Salaris, cut only at certain points in order to allow the entry into the complex, derives from the purpose of arousing the curiosity of people that walk along the commercial street. On the contrary, in the remaining space we scattered smaller elements. In addition we wanted people to stay inside the complex, once entered. For this reason, the flat-top building was made more permeable and new functions, more attractive than the previous, were added. The two blocks along Via Salaris and Via Dante are designed to be introvert. Small windows and the narrow, red, fully glazed paths are the only openings to the outside. The first serve as showcases for shops, the second are designed to pull people in. The exterior finished of the elevations of these two blocks is made of polycarbonate, that allows the passage of light, but hides the functions that take place inside. On the other hand the elevations along Via Sant’Alenixedda and Piazza Giovanni are completely extroverted.

Different configurations of cubic games for children

The project plans to reserve all the surface of the roof garden to the families that live in the complex, especially to the children. Indeed it was thought to realise a playground made up of coloured glass cubes that, sliding down and partially invading the space of the lower floor, become real skylights to the ground floor. Thanks to the use of additional openings, wooden paths and vegetation, these cubes are located as much as possible far away from the dwelling of the first floor, in this way they don’t bother the residents.


Roof extension In regard to the roof extension, it was planned to add one small room at least to 80% of the houses of the complex. These small rooms can be used for different functions (storage, room, study). They’re also energetically selfsufficient, thanks to the photovoltaic panels installed on the roof. In addiction it was thought to realise different urban kitchen gardens, each belonging to a single unit.

CALCULATION OF ENERGY PERFORMANCE OF PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS It was established an energy yield of 200 kWh per year for each square meter of surface area on which it has been installed a system of photovoltaic panels.

Public space

The project idea comes from some considerations about the features of the city blocks. First it was observed that buildings usually stand on the edge of the lot, producing a compact front, whereas many empty spaces are generated inside the blocks. These spaces, generated by the diversified growth of buildings inwards, are mainly unused. The second consideration was about the way of living the city. Public life always develops all around the city blocks, where commercial and public activities generally take place. This last thought is not valid for the project area because, due to the two big roads on the sides of this area, people don’t feel safe to walk around the blocks. Hence the idea of the URBAN TURNOVER was born: bringing the empty spaces outside, on one hand they can be used, on the other hand it can be created a protected area, just for pedestrian use, in the internal part of the blocks. Moreover the empty spaces are raised three meters above the level of the street, in this way they become semi-private spaces and are used like courts for the new buildings.

To reinforce the idea of a path developed inside a sequence of urban blocks, a cultural route was added to the physical one: it was chosen to create a school of art, in which different disciplines (music, dance, theater, sculpture, etc.) take place in each of the internal empty spaces. This NETWORK OF NODES presupposes to realise an academy of graphic arts in the block of project.

The project block is located in Cagliari, between Viale Diaz, Via Sonnino, Viale Colombo and Vico Armando Diaz. In this area there are two pre-existing building that it was decided to preserve because they are new apartment houses. All the other buildings were demolished, especially because they was neglected. The shape of the internal pathways is designed in order to obtain a succession of small and large spaces, so that people are more involved to enter inside and to discover the hide places. All the public functions (stores, bars, school of graphic arts, parking spaces, etc.) are placed in the ground floor. The upper floors contain private flats and dwellings for students.

By the analysis of the historical centre of Cagliari we determined the following features: high prevalence of gothic blocks, narrow streets, predominance of longitudinal roads rather than transverse, compactness of the buildings along the street, lack of privacy inside the houses due to the excessive closeness of the overlooking buildings. The project plans the construction of a housing estate in an urban void, result of the bombings of World War II. The concept considers the positive features of both the detached house (private courtyards, privacy) and the urban typology of the high density housing building (neighbourhood

relations, proximity to the services). Hence the idea of combining them into the same type, creating detached houses with courtyard, but within a multi-storey building. In order to achieve this aim we studied three different types of housing: a linear type, a L-shaped type developed on a single level and a L-shaped type developed on two levels. These three typologies were combined to realise different building blocks. The high construction density that characterises this area does not allow proper lighting and ventilation of the buildings. For this reason the complex was extensively studied in this respect. The design response to this problem was to place the parking lots and the stairwells in the shaded areas. Furthermore, separating the dwellings from the stairwells it was guaranteed a greater number of free elevations, increasing the natural light sources. The decision to separate the stairwells helped increase the level of

privacy in the flats. Indeed each of these is connected to the stairwells by a private aerial walkway, that ensures more privacy than the more common system in which a single landing enables to reach different flats. These walkways lead to the private courtyards and then they ideally continue inside the flats, emerging as bay-windows on the elevation. Each of these looks onto some of the historical sights of the city. The bay-windows are the only openings on the main elevation, since the entire complex is purposely designed introvert in order to ensure sufficient privacy, absent in the rest of the neighbourhood. To compensate the lack of transverse streets it was eventually decided to divide the complex in two parts, realising a transverse passage that is sheltered by a pedestrian platform. This passage, that connects Via San Giovanni with Via Ozieri, increases the stream of pedestrians in the area, becoming the public space of the complex.

Zeppara Ales

HIC ET NUNC. Reversal of perspective in the urban project Morgongiori, Ales, Zeppara and Pau are four realities - four “micro-centres” inside the Sardinian territory which permit those locals or foreigners to experience the landscape (landscape therapy). The recognition of the value and beauty of these “crossing” territories, allows to reconstruct a new sense of boundary. These four micro-centres show many similarities in their diversity. The centres become the engines of the network: Ales, for example, can find a new residential and “unusual” cohabitation between the children and the elderly, bacause one can teach the other the memories of the landscape experience through games. The follies are containers of activities (programs) and also elements that rediscover the value of the game bacause they themselves are objects that play in the nature of urban artifice.

Morgongiori The paths between the four centres


Ales

Architectures for the edges of Ales Zeppara - Pau - Morgongiori The limit of Ales is morphologically characterised by the main road that connects the SS131 with most of the villages of Marmilla and divides the area into two distinct parts. The project rehabilitates the entire area of the borders into a new residential structure and support housing already present. The path between Ales and Zeppara is enhanced by ineractions between man and landscape as a game. The man, the senior resident and/or child, understands and discovers the landscape experience with fun. The radical new approach to the building of the new Toy Museum helps to define a renewed image of the north-east of Zeppara. The design strategy for Pau is enhance the Museum of obsidian, identifying one of the most important engines of development in Upper Marmilla network. Silvia Mocci

A new green area allows pedestrian accessibility within the project site and accomodates sport paths and leisure spaces. The linear park crosses the site north-south connecting it to the urban fabric.

Settlement Strategy Opposite to the sprawl of the recent expansion of the suburban areas, the new development strategy restores the traditional courtyard type as a sustainable, low density, compact model. The public housing and services are included into the new linear park, which work as a connection structure for the north expansion and completes the urban system of public spaces. The transversal comunication is realized through neighborhood public spaces connected to the linear park by cycle and pedestrian tracks.

Hybrid Landscape Territorial scale analysis showing the three interrelated systems: the urban fabric, the agricultural pattern and the natural one. The growth of the city of San BartolomĂŠ towards the sorrounding cultivated land generates a hybrid landscape in which the expansion of the suburban areas dissolves into the countryside. A new pattern structuring the built and green areas of the project site is designed according to the lines of the surrounding fields, estabilishing a communication between the city and its territory.

Services and Facilities The urban densification strategy and the interconnection (ecological and low-speed) of public spaces results in an implementation of the exchanges within the area and between the project site and the city. The inclusion of public spaces and neighborhood services increases the inner connection, while the urban-scale services generate a new centrality in an otherwise peripherical area.

Boundaries The proposal takes into account the suggestions of the development plan regarding the definition of a green boundary. This ideal border is intended not only as a limit for the urban expansion, but also as an ecological sport and pedestrian pathway, connecting the northern and southern suburban areas to the surrounding landscape. Another connection from north to south, crossing the city center, is designed, while two low-speed cycle and sport tracks complete the new sustainable mobility system, ensuring transversal connection in each expansion area.

The main idea of the project is to make a tiny flat look as big as possible, within the limits allowed by 39 square meters. For this reason, the living room is designed to be very large, hence the slogan LIVING in a LARGE SPACE (in which it is used the double entendre of the word “living� in order to express not only the verb to live but also the main room of a flat). The bathroom is the only fixed part of the apartment, it contains a small sauna, as well as the toilet and the shower.

A movable wall separates the living room from the study or the bedroom. This wall is planned to be multifunctional: a mac 31 In is hung to a rotating panel; another panel rotates to become a desk; a one side of the wall contains a shelf for more than 100 dvd; in another shelf on the back side you can put books; an opening compartment houses a lot of cd rom. This movable wall can flow, thanks to a runner, up to overlap completely to the bath. In this way the living room becomes more spacious and, when the table is open, you can easily watch the tv on the Mac 31 In, which is now located in front of it.

The hideable kitchen is designed to be as compact as possible in order to keep out a large portion of the wall above it. On this wall you can project the images using the projector placed on the wall in front of it. When the kitchen is closed, it seems to be a simple furniture of the room. When it is open it shows that contains all the elements required by the competition. In one partition of the kitchen there is the space for two table, easily openable, that can comfortably accommodate 12 people.

Once closed, the sliding wall defines the space of the study / bedroom. Within the study it is perceived as a wall system, which contains most of the equipment inside the room.

Car Design without limits

International contest organised by the Faculty of Architecture of Trieste (Italy) 2009

The competition asked to consider and propose design solutions for the car of the future, paying particular attention to the exterior design, the size and the habitability.

The main purpose was to design a car with a simple shape, which could be assimilated to the stones naturally smoothed by the water. All the choices respond to this basic principle: the rear view mirrors are integrated in the body shell; the wheels are not visible but hidden by the frame. Instead of the two classical doors it has been chosen to realize a single large door without interruption, so getting into the car is more comfortable. Because of its size, it is possible to open the door just electrically. The elimination of the handle, completely useless, reinforces the idea of simplicity, which underlies the design of the vehicle. When the door is opening it describes a quarter of a circle, whose center coincides with the center of the front wheel: this choice suggests the presence of the wheel, even though it remains invisible. The low-slung frame and the glass hood are designed to widen the view of the external environment. The bonnet has been shortened in order to save as much space as possible in the passenger compartment. The engine is located in the rear hood.

The size of the car make parking easy. Its proportions are typical of a compact car.
