TAKE-HOME SCIENCE

Instant FREEZE!

What’s happening?

Materials Needed: • Unopened bottles of purified water • Course rock salt • Ice and a large bowl • Thermometer • Tabletop or hard surface

Instructions: Fill your bowl with ice and put two pre-refrigerated, plastic water bottles deeply into the ice. Keep them close to the center of the bowl, and completely surround them with the ice. Scatter rock salt generously over the surface of the ice. Insert a thermometer between the bottles and watch the temperature begin to drop. As the temperature drops, continue to add ice and salt as needed to keep the bottles surrounded by the ice and salt mixture.

Because the ice and salt cool the water bottles to 17°F, a temperature below the 32°F freezing point, the purified water inside the bottles reaches a freezing temperature without actually turning into ice. But, the action of smashing the bottle against the table triggers the water and causes it to turn into ice right before your eyes! Purified water has a harder time turning into ice because it lacks imperfections for ice crystals to form from, so it needs a little extra smash to get it started. Cool, right?

Keep watching! The temperature in the bowl needs to read 17°F for 10 minutes. But make sure the water in your bottles isn’t turning into ice yet! After observing your bottles at 17°F for 10 minutes, gently remove a bottle from the ice/salt mixture. Quickly strike the bottom of the bottle against a stable, hard surface (table, counter top, etc.) and watch as the water in your bottle instantly turns to ice!* *This experiment may take a few tries, so it’s good to have extra ice, extra salt, and a few extra water bottles on hand!

THANK YOU!
