TAKE-HOME SCIENCE:

Oobleck Slime LEGO® Rescue! Materials: • • • • •

Large, shallow-edged container (like a casserole dish) 2 cups of cornstarch 1 cup of water LEGO® minifigures Food coloring (optional)

Instructions: Begin by mixing your oobleck. Add 1 cup of water to your large container. If you’re going to color your oobleck, add a drop of food coloring to your water and mix it around before adding your cornstarch. Then add 2 cups of cornstarch and mix slowly. Remember; nonNewtonian fluids react to pressure, so if you mix hard and fast, it will become increasingly more difficult to incorporate the ingredients! Once your oobleck is ready, spend some time exploring the texture. Learning more about how a non-Newtonian fluid behaves will help you free your LEGO® minifigures! Pass your LEGO® minifigures on to a parent or friend, and ask them to push them deep into the container of oobleck while you’re not looking. Part of the fun is not knowing where they are! Using your fingers, excavate through the oobleck to rescue your minifigures! Don’t forget what you’ve learned about non-Newtonian fluids—the more you work it, the harder and more solid it becomes.

What is oobleck? Is oobleck a liquid or a solid? It’s actually a non-Newtonian fluid and acts like both a solid and a liquid! The more pressure you place on a nonNewtonian fluid, the more solid it becomes. So you can use your fingers to pick up non-Newtonian fluids like a solid, but then it begins to flow like a liquid when it’s back in the container.
