TAKE-HOME SCIENCE:
Solar-Powered Coloring! What is the sun’s daily path? The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. But did you know that based on the sun’s path, our shadows grow and shrink during the day?
Materials: • Table or flat surface • Paper • Pencils/crayons/markers • Figures/toys/shapes
Instructions: 1. In the morning (around 8 a.m.), set up your table outside in a sunny location.
Pringles cans or tennis balls cans
2.
Shoe boxes Old figure toys (dinosaurs, army men, Barbie-type dolls, etc.
3.
Screw drivers and hammers Wooden frames (8x10 or larger)
Place paper on your table, and place your figures/toys on the paper so they cast shadows onto the paper. Trace the shadows cast by the sun with your crayons or markers.
4. Color your shadows based on your imagination.
Lamp bases
5.
Small matchbox cars
PLAY
•
Repeat steps 1-4 at different times throughout the day and compare how the sizes of your traced shadows change!

What’s happening? Light travels in straight lines, and shadows are caused by something blocking light from going straight. If you notice the shadow made by your own body, you’ll find that it is the longest in the early morning after the sun rises and just before it sets at night because more of your body is blocking the light.
