WELCOME
The Blue Hill Peninsula encompasses the towns of Blue Hill, Brooklin, Brooksville, Castine, Penobscot, Sedgwick and Surry. Blue Hill is the largest town, and is the region’s service center. Along with Penobscot, Blue Hill is the gateway to the rest of the Peninsula, and to Deer Isle and Stonington. The landscape here is marked by sweeping views of blueberry barrens and the sea. Tucked in among the ridges, valleys and the jagged coastline, you’ll find adventure of all kinds, from a day on the water and an evening of live music to a solitary morning walk and an afternoon of gallery tours and shopping. You’ll find our communities to be diverse, independent yet interconnected. Anywhere on the Peninsula, you may strike up a conversation with a lobsterman, boatbuilder or sailor who knows these waters like the back of their hand. You will find locally sourced food and highly skilled craftspeople and artists in every town and village in our region. And anywhere you go from Stonington to Penobscot, you’ll find evidence of the resourcefulness, dry wit and creativity that has defined our region’s culture for centuries. This region was home to Maine’s Native American tribes, for close to 4000 years before the arrival of Captain Joseph Wood and John Roundy in 1762. The early economy centered around ship building and quarrying. Lumbering, lobstering, fishing and farming have played an important role in our economy and culture since the earliest days. By the late 1800’s the region had become a summer destination. Today, many of these industries coexist with a thriving art, music and food scene to create this unique place called The Blue Hill Peninsula. Welcome. We’re so glad you came!

FARM TO TABLE
The state of Maine has over 1.4 million acres in farmland (about 8,200 farms), 60% of which are held in small farms of less than 100 acres. Maine now ranks first in agricultural sales, in no small part due to the thriving network of farmers markets, farm stands, and to farm-to-table restaurants. Agricultural production on the Peninsula embodies the interdependence of culture, food and a healthy economy. This Peninsula is home to roughly 40 farms. They are all small family-run farms, committed to the land and to producing high quality produce, dairy and meat products. Farmers here produce year-round, despite our notorious winters. With a farmers market in every town, you’ll find farm stands all around the peninsula and you can even buy from the on-line farmers market FarmDrop, or can have a care package of locally produced goods delivered to you from Peninsula Provisions. Farm-to-table dining offers the finest collaboration between the regions talented chefs and its dedicated farmers. Across the Peninsula, chefs work with local food producers to deliver the finest dining experience - they can tell you where your steak or oyster was raised, what type of heirloom tomato you’ve been served and why the local cream makes the best flan. The peninsula’s farmers markets are home-grown, community driven markets offering a changing mix of farm products, including produce, meat, dairy and eggs. Local coffee roasters, tea producers, the local saltworks, beekeepers, bakers, fishermen & women, and craftspeople are also well-represented. Each market reflects a nature of its town, and each trip to the market is a unique experience.

BLUE HILL HERITAGE TRUST
Nestled between Blue Hill Mountain and the protective arm of Blue Hill Bay lies the town of Blue Hill. In 1762, the town’s founders sailed up the bay, disembarked at Mill Island near the reversing falls and built their homes there. Incorporated in 1789, Blue Hill first made a name for itself as a shipbuilding and lumber center, it’s sawmills and craftspeople turning out brigs and schooners, masts, cordwood and shingles. Granite from Blue Hill was prized for its high quality and made its way to such notable buildings as the US Stock Exchange and the Brooklyn Bridge. By the mid-1800’s, the town became a summer destination. Today, Blue Hill is rich with artists and craftspeople, excellent food, gracious lodging, art galleries and small shops. Blue Hill welcomes visitors and residents alike to hike its forests and to canoe, kayak and sail its waters. As a service center, the community offers excellent public and private schools, a library that has been the cornerstone of intellectual and social activity in town since its founding in 1796, and a full-service hospital. Blue Hill offers community events such as the traditional blueberry pancake breakfast at the Congregational Church, a summer concert series featuring the steel drum band “Flash! in The Pans,” classical music at Kneisel Hall, Blue Hill Bach and choral music by the Bagaduce Chorale. The Memorial Day Parade, the famous Blue Hill Fair, and both a winter and summer farmers market are just some of the social, recreational and musical events Blue Hill has to offer.

PENOBSCOT & SURRY PENOBSCOT TOWN OFFICE
The small, quiet town of Penobscot was one of the earliest settlements on the Peninsula. It’s interior marshes, ponds and the Northern Bay are popular destinations for birding, leisure fishing, kayaking and boating. Incorporated in 1787, the town remains a treasure trove of the region’s history. The Penobscot Historical Society hosts a much-loved pig roast during the height of the summer.

CASTINE CASTINE TOWN OFFICE Emerson Hall | 67 Court St. | P.O. Box 204 Castine, ME 04421 (207) 326-4502 Settled in 1604, the historic town of Castine is one of the oldest in the nation and the only town on the Peninsula to have been occupied at various times by the French, the Dutch and the English. It’s strategic location at the mouth of the Penobscot River estuary, along with such colorful figures as Paul Revere and the Baron de St. Castin, made the town a notable trading and maritime center, and a prominent player in the fight for American independence. Today, Castine offers walking tours of its historic buildings, including three forts and Dyce’s Head Lighthouse. It is home to Maine Maritime Academy, and it’s downtown offers a wonderful mix of architectural gems, gracious hospitality and fine dining. Shops and galleries dot the hilly streets leading down to the waterfront. The famous schooner Bowdoin, the only American schooner designed and built for Arctic exploration, is docked in Castine. Built in downeast Maine in 1921, the Bowdoin had made over 25 trips into the Arctic circle and served in WWII. When she’s not sailing above the Arctic circle, you can visit her right on the Castine waterfront. Summer season in Castine offers something for everyone. 1

SEDGWICK SEDGWICK TOWN OFFICE 719 North Sedgwick Rd. | P.O. Box 40 Sedgwick, ME 04676 (207) 359-2275 The town of Sedgwick was incorporated in 1798 and named after Major General Robert Sedgwick who ousted the French from neighboring Castine. The township’s boundaries diminished as land was taken to form the neighboring towns of Brooksville and Brooklin in the early 1800’s. Early settlers found the land more suitable to grazing, quarrying and logging, due to the long, rocky ridge that runs between the Bagaduce river and Salt Pond. Blueberry barrens dot the landscape, offering scenic views, most notably Caterpillar Hill. The town’s coastline stretches along the shores of the Eggemoggin Reach, separating the Peninsula from Deer Isle. The mouth of the Benjamin River offers sailors and other boaters a quiet cove, and village of Sargentville is the gateway to Deer Isle. 1

HISTORICAL SOCIETIES The rich history of this peninsula is kept alive and archived by historical societies in Blue Hill, Brooksville, Castine, Penobscot and Sedgwick. Each historical society is home to a wealth of pictures, artifacts, tools, and memorabilia documenting the history of each town. A visit to any of these historical societies is likely to include a conversation with the keepers of this collective history. It may come in the form of a story about a beloved daughter who moved two towns over to marry, or a tale about the year the canning factory opened. The historical societies, along with the Peninsula’s libraries, provide vast resources for those interested in genealogy research. Blue Hill Historical Society at The Holt House on Water St. in Blue Hill The Holt House, built in 1815, offers a complete look into the households of 18th and 19th century living. Both the house and carriage house hold period furniture and other household goods (including the kitchen hearth), a children’s room with toys, dolls and clothing; tools, carriages and a sleigh. Town records and other memorabilia from the 18th –early 20th century are also housed here. Hours: Tuesdays and Fridays, 1 – 4 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. from July 7 through September 12. Brooksville Historical Society on Rte. 176 in Brooksville Corner The collection at this historical society includes marine artifacts, blacksmithing and farming tools along with genealogical information such as bound family histories and journals. Additional geneology resources, such as cemetery and vital records compilations are also housed on site. Hours: Wednesdays and Sundays from 1 – 4 p.m. during July and August. Castine Historical Society at 17 School St. in Castine The historical society’s free walking map of Castine details the architecture and history of the town. The Society also houses a permanent exhibit about the Revolutionary War-era naval expedition on mouth of the Penobscot at Castine. The original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof had the fi rst musical theater run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. It held the record of the longer-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years. It won multiple Tony awards, including Best Musical and awards for leading actor and actress, score and choreography. It spawned six Broadway revivals and a highly successful fi lm adaptation and has enjoyed enduring international popularity. SYLVIA DIRECTED BY BEC POOLE June 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 & July 1 at 7:00 p.m. and June 25 at 3:00 p.m. Can a man love a dog too much? Sylvia, by A.R. Gurney, humorously explores love along with the nature of relationships of all forms. Recently produced on Broadway in 2015 starring Matthew Broderick, this is the story of Greg, his wife Kate and a stray dog names Sylvia. Funny, sweet, and very much geared towards adults (in both language and content), the story that unfolds changes everyone involved. The chaos and charm Sylvia (a role originated by Sarah Jessica Parker) brings into this marriage delights audiences and warms hearts. The play has been described as a comedic masterpiece.
